An Incremental System To Predict the Effect of Different London Dispersion Donors in All-meta-Substituted Azobenzenes.

ABSTRACT: Predictive models based on incremental systems exist for many chemical phenomena, thus allowing easy estimates. Despite their low magnitude in isolated systems London dispersion interactions are ubiquitous in manifold situations ranging from solvation to catalysis or in biological systems. Based on our azobenzene system, we systematically determined the London dispersion donor strength of the alkyl substituents Me, Et, iPr up to tBu. Based on this data, we were able to implement an incremental system for London dispersion for the azobenzene scheme. We propose an equation that allows the prediction of the effect of change of substituents on London dispersion interactions in azobenzenes, which has to be validated in similar molecular arrangements in the future.

London dispersion as important factor for the stabilization of (<i>Z</i>)-azobenzenes in the presence of hydrogen bonding.

Project description:The understanding and control of the light-induced isomerization of azobenzenes as one of the most important classes of molecular switches is crucial for the design of light-responsive materials using this entity. Herein, we present the stabilization of metastable (Z)-azobenzenes by London dispersion interactions, even in the presence of comparably stronger hydrogen bonds in various solvents. The Z→E isomerization rates of several N-substituted 4,4'-bis(4-aminobenzyl)azobenzenes were measured. An intramolecular stabilization was observed and explained by the interplay of intramolecular amide and carbamate hydrogen bonds as well as London dispersion interactions. Whereas in toluene, 1,4-dioxane and tert-butyl methyl ether the hydrogen bonds dominate, the variation in stabilization of the different substituted azobenzenes in dimethyl sulfoxide can be rationalized by London dispersion interactions. These findings were supported by conformational analysis and DFT computations and reveal low-energy London dispersion forces to be a significant factor, even in the presence of hydrogen bonds.

Mechanochemical halogenation of unsymmetrically substituted azobenzenes.

Project description:The direct and selective mechanochemical halogenation of C-H bonds in unsymmetrically substituted azobenzenes using N-halosuccinimides as the halogen source under neat grinding or liquid-assisted grinding conditions in a ball mill has been described. Depending on the azobenzene substrate used, halogenation of the C-H bonds occurs in the absence or only in the presence of PdII catalysts. Insight into the reaction dynamics and characterization of the products was achieved by in situ Raman and ex situ NMR spectroscopy and PXRD analysis. A strong influence of the different 4,4'-substituents of azobenzene on the halogenation time and mechanism was found.

London Dispersion in Alkane Solvents.

Project description:The importance of London dispersion interactions in solution is an ongoing debate. Although the significance of dispersion for structure and stability is widely accepted, the degree of its attenuation in solution is still not properly understood. Quantitative evaluations are derived mostly from computations. Experimental data provide guidelines to include London dispersion in solution phase design. Herein, dispersive interactions were examined with an azobenzene probe. Alkyl substituents in meta positions of the azobenzene core were systematically varied and the effect on the half-lives for the thermally induced Z to E isomerization in several alkane solvents was determined. The results show that intramolecular dispersion is only marginally influenced. In solvents with low surface tension, reduced destabilizing solvent-solvent interactions increase the half-life up to 20 %. Specific individual interactions between alkyl chains on the azobenzene and those of the solvent lead to additional fluctuations of the half-lives. These presumably result from structural changes of the conformer ensemble.

Colorimetric Sugar Sensing Using Boronic Acid-Substituted Azobenzenes.

Project description:In association with increasing diabetes prevalence, it is desirable to develop new glucose sensing systems with low cost, ease of use, high stability and good portability. Boronic acid is one of the potential candidates for a future alternative to enzyme-based glucose sensors. Boronic acid derivatives have been widely used for the sugar recognition motif, because boronic acids bind adjacent diols to form cyclic boronate esters. In order to develop colorimetric sugar sensors, boronic acid-conjugated azobenzenes have been synthesized. There are several types of boronic acid azobenzenes, and their characteristics tend to rely on the substitute position of the boronic acid moiety. For example, o-substitution of boronic acid to the azo group gives the advantage of a significant color change upon sugar addition. Nitrogen-15 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) studies clearly show a signaling mechanism based on the formation and cleavage of the B-N dative bond between boronic acid and azo moieties in the dye. Some boronic acid-substituted azobenzenes were attached to a polymer or utilized for supramolecular chemistry to produce glucose-selective binding, in which two boronic acid moieties cooperatively bind one glucose molecule. In addition, boronic acid-substituted azobenzenes have been applied not only for glucose monitoring, but also for the sensing of glycated hemoglobin and dopamine.

Intramolecular London Dispersion Interactions in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Project description:This work shows the first example of using intramolecular London dispersion interactions to control molecular geometry and quantum transport in single-molecule junctions. Flexible σ-bonded molecular junctions typically occupy straight-chain geometries due to steric effects. Here, we synthesize a series of thiomethyl-terminated oligo(dimethylsilmethylene)s that bear [CH2-Si(CH3)2]n repeat units, where all backbone dihedral states are sterically equivalent. Scanning tunneling microscopy break-junction (STM-BJ) measurements and theoretical calculations indicate that in the absence of a strong steric bias concerted intramolecular London dispersion interactions staple the carbosilane backbone into coiled conformations that remain intact even as the junction is stretched to its breakpoint. As these kinked conformations are highly resistive to electronic transport, we observe record-high conductance decay values on an experimental junction length basis (β = 1.86 ± 0.12 Å-1). These studies reveal the potential of using intramolecular London dispersion interactions to design single-molecule electronics.

London dispersion dominating diamantane packing in helium nanodroplets.

Project description:Diamantane clusters formed inside superfluid helium nanodroplets were analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Distinct cluster sizes were identified as "magic numbers" and the corresponding feasible structures for clusters consisting of up to 19 diamantane molecules were derived from meta-dynamics simulations and subsequent DFT computations. The obtained interaction energies were attributed to London dispersion attraction. Our findings demonstrate that diamantane units readily form assemblies even at low pressures and near-zero Kelvin temperatures, confirming the importance of the intermolecular dispersion effect for condensation of matter.

London Dispersion Favors Sterically Hindered Diarylthiourea Conformers in Solution.

Project description:We present an experimental and computational study on the conformers of N,N'-diphenylthiourea substituted with different dispersion energy donor (DED) groups. While the unfolded anti-anti conformer is the most relevant for thiourea catalysis, intramolecular noncovalent interactions counterintuitively favor the folded syn-syn conformer, as evident from a combination of low-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and computations. In order to quantify the noncovalent interactions, we utilized local energy decomposition analysis and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory at the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/def2-TZVPP and sSAPT0/6-311G(d,p) levels of theory. Additionally, we applied a double-mutant cycle to experimentally study the effects of bulky substituents on the equilibria. We determined London dispersion as the key interaction that shifts the equilibria towards the syn-syn conformers. This preference is likely a factor why such thiourea derivatives can be poor catalysts.

Sizing the role of London dispersion in the dissociation of all-<i>meta tert</i>-butyl hexaphenylethane.

Project description:The structure and dynamics of enigmatic hexa(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)ethane was characterized via NMR spectroscopy for the first time. Our variable temperature NMR analysis demonstrates an enthalpy-entropy compensation that results in a vanishingly low dissociation energy (ΔG298d = -1.60(6) kcal mol-1). An in silico study of increasingly larger all-meta alkyl substituted hexaphenylethane derivatives (Me, iPr, t Bu, Cy, 1-Ad) reveals a non-intuitive correlation between increased dimer stability with increasing steric crowding. This stabilization originates from London dispersion as expressed through the increasing polarizability of the alkyl substituents. Substitution with conformationally flexible hydrocarbon moieties, e.g., cyclohexyl, introduces large unfavourable entropy contributions. Therefore, using rigid alkyl groups like tert-butyl or adamantyl as dispersion energy donors (DED) is essential to help stabilize extraordinary bonding situations.

A Variational Approach to London Dispersion Interactions without Density Distortion.

Project description:We introduce a class of variational wave functions that captures the long-range interaction between neutral systems (atoms and molecules) without changing the diagonal of the density matrix of each monomer. The corresponding energy optimization yields explicit expressions for the dispersion coefficients in terms of the ground-state pair densities of the isolated systems, providing a clean theoretical framework to build new approximations in several contexts. As the individual monomer densities are kept fixed, we can also unambiguously assess the effect of the density distortion on London dispersion interactions; for example, we obtain virtually exact dispersion coefficients between two hydrogen atoms up to C10 and relative errors below 0.2% in other simple cases.

Meta-Connected Oligo-Azobenzenes Outperform Their Para Counterparts.

Project description:Systems with multiple photoswitchable units in one molecule have attracted considerable attention in the past years as they are useful for a broad variety of possible applications. Especially, linked azobenzenes sharing one benzene ring are of high interest since their direct linkage introduces an additional photoswitchable unit at only small increase in molecular weight. In this spirit, linear oligo-azobenzenes had been synthesized, though their photochemical properties have only been investigated for short chain lengths. In this study, we use (time-dependent) density functional methodology for the evaluation of the excitations of meta- and para-connected oligo-azobenzenes to predict their switching ability. It becomes apparent, that the meta connection pattern enables each azobenzene subunit to act as an individual switchable unit, whereas they are strongly coupled and loose their individuality in para connection. Therefore, meta-oligo-azobenzenes are ideal candidates for future studies of azobenzene-based functional polymers, while para-oligo-azobenzenes are not.
