Potassium Aluminyl Promoted Carbonylation of Ethene.

ABSTRACT: The potassium aluminyl [K{Al(NON^Dipp )}]₂ ([NON^Dipp ]^2- =[O{SiMe₂ NDipp}₂ ]^2- , Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) activates ethene towards carbonylation with CO under mild conditions. An isolated bis-aluminacyclopropane compound reacted with CO via carbonylation of an Al-C bond, followed by an intramolecular hydrogen shift to form K₂ [Al(NON^Dipp )(μ-CH₂ CH=CO-1κ² C^1,3 -2κO)Al(NON^Dipp )Et]. Restricting the chemistry to a mono-aluminium system allowed isolation of [Al(NON^Dipp )(CH₂ CH₂ CO-κ² C^1,3 )]^- , which undergoes thermal isomerisation to form the [Al(NON^Dipp )(CH₂ CH=CHO-κ² C,O)]^- anion. DFT calculations highlight the stabilising influence of incorporated benzene at multiple steps in the reaction pathways.

Project description:The reaction of 9-diazo-9H-fluorene (fluN2 ) with the potassium aluminyl K[Al(NON)] ([NON]2- =[O(SiMe2 NDipp)2 ]2- , Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) affords K[Al(NON)(κN1 ,N3 -{(fluN2 )2 })] (1). Structural analysis shows a near planar 1,4-di(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)tetraazadiide ligand that chelates to the aluminium. The thermally induced elimination of dinitrogen from 1 affords the neutral aluminium ketimide complex, Al(NON)(N=flu)(THF) (2) and the 1,2-di(9H-fluoren-9-yl)diazene dianion as the potassium salt, [K2 (THF)3 ][fluN=Nflu] (3). The reaction of 2 with N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide (iPrN=C=NiPr) affords the aluminium guanidinate complex, Al(NON){N(iPr)C(N=CMe2 )N(CHflu)} (4), showing a rare example of reactivity at a metal ketimide ligand. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to examine the bonding in the newly formed [(fluN2 )2 ]2- ligand in 1 and the ketimide bonding in 2. The mechanism leading to the formation of 4 has also been studied using this technique.

Controlled reductive C-C coupling of isocyanides promoted by an aluminyl anion.

Project description:We report the reaction of the potassium aluminyl, K[Al(NON)] ([NON]2- = [O(SiMe2NDipp)2]2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with a series of isocyanide substrates (R-NC). In the case of tBu-NC, degradation of the isocyanide was observed generating an isomeric mixture of the corresponding aluminium cyanido-κC and -κN compounds, K[Al(NON)(H)(CN)]/K[Al(NON)(H)(NC)]. The reaction with 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (Dmp-NC), gave a C3-homologation product, which in addition to C-C bond formation showed dearomatisation of one of the aromatic substituents. In contrast, using adamantyl isocyanide Ad-NC allowed both the C2- and C3-homologation products to be isolated, allowing a degree of control to be exercised over the chain growth process. These data also show that the reaction proceeds through a stepwise addition, supported in this study by the synthesis of the mixed [(Ad-NC)2(Dmp-NC)]2- product. Computational analysis of the bonding within the homologised products confirm a high degree of multiple bond character in the exocyclic ketenimine units of the C2- and C3-products. In addition, the mechanism of chain growth was investigated, identifying different possible pathways leading to the observed products, and highlighting the importance of the potassium cation in formation of the initial C2-chain.

Fluoride-promoted carbonylation polymerization: a facile step-growth technique to polycarbonates.

Project description:Fluoride-Promoted Carbonylation (FPC) polymerization is herein presented as a novel catalytic polymerization methodology that complements ROP and unlocks a greater synthetic window to advanced polycarbonates. The overall two-step strategy is facile, robust and capitalizes on the synthesis and step-growth polymerization of bis-carbonylimidazolide and diol monomers of 1,3- or higher configurations. Cesium fluoride (CsF) is identified as an efficient catalyst and the bis-carbonylimidazolide monomers are synthesized as bench-stable white solids, easily obtained on 50-100 g scales from their parent diols using cheap commercial 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) as activating reagent. The FPC polymerization works well in both solution and bulk, does not require any stoichiometric additives or complex settings and produces only imidazole as a relatively low-toxicity by-product. As a proof-of-concept using only four diol building-blocks, FPC methodology enabled the synthesis of a unique library of polycarbonates covering (i) rigid, flexible and reactive PC backbones, (ii) molecular weights 5-20 kg mol-1, (iii) dispersities of 1.3-2.9 and (iv) a wide span of glass transition temperatures, from -45 up to 169 °C.

Achieving volatile potassium promoted ammonia synthesis via mechanochemistry.

Project description:Potassium oxide (K2O) is used as a promotor in industrial ammonia synthesis, although metallic potassium (K) is better in theory. The reason K2O is used is because metallic K, which volatilizes around 400 °C, separates from the catalyst in the harsh ammonia synthesis conditions of the Haber-Bosch process. To maximize the efficiency of ammonia synthesis, using metallic K with low temperature reaction below 400 °C is prerequisite. Here, we synthesize ammonia using metallic K and Fe as a catalyst via mechanochemical process near ambient conditions (45 °C, 1 bar). The final ammonia concentration reaches as high as 94.5 vol%, which was extraordinarily higher than that of the Haber-Bosch process (25.0 vol%, 450 °C, 200 bar) and our previous work (82.5 vol%, 45 °C, 1 bar).

Visible light-promoted alkylation of imines using potassium organotrifluoroborates.

Project description:A mild, redox-neutral, alkylation of imines with potassium alkyltrifluoroborates is described. The reaction proceeds under photoredox conditions at ∼30 °C with primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyltrifluoroborates, leading to alkylation products in moderate to good yield in most cases. Aryl-, vinyl-, and cyclopropyltrifluoroborates failed to react under the reported conditions.

Chemical kinetics and promoted Co-immobilization for efficient catalytic carbonylation of ethylene oxide into methyl 3-hydroxypropionate.

Project description:The carbonylative transformation of ethylene oxide (EO) into methyl 3-hydroxypropionate (3-HPM) is a key process for the production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), which is currently viewed as one of the most promising monomers and intermediates in polyester and pharmaceuticals industry. In this work, a homogeneous reaction system using commercial Co2(CO)8 was first studied for the carbonylation of EO to 3-HPM. The catalytic behavior was related to the electronic environment of N on aromatic rings of ligands, where N with rich electron density induced a stronger coordination with Co center and higher EO transformation. A reaction order of 2.1 with respect to EO and 0.3 with respect to CO was unraveled based on the kinetics study. The 3-HPM yield reached 91.2% at only 40°C by Co2(CO)8 coordinated with 3-hydroxypyridine. However, Co-containing colloid was formed during the reaction, causing the tough separation and impossible recycling of samples. Concerning the sustainable utilization, Co particles immobilized on pre-treated carbon nanotubes (Co/CNT-C) were designed via an in situ reduced colloid method. It is remarkable that unlike conventional Co/CNT, Co/CNT-C was highly selective toward the transformation of EO to 3-HPM with a specific rate of 52.2 mmol·gCo-1·h-1 , displaying a similar atomic efficiency to that of coordinated Co2(CO)8. After reaction, the supported Co/CNT-C catalyst could be easily separated from the liquid reaction mixture, leading to a convenient cyclic utilization.

What Singles out Aluminyl Anions? A Comparative Computational Study of the Carbon Dioxide Insertion Reaction in Gold-Aluminyl, -Gallyl, and -Indyl Complexes.

Project description:Anionic aluminum(I) anions ("aluminyls") are the most recent discovery along Group 13 anions, and the understanding of the unconventional reactivity they are able to induce at a coordinated metal site is at an early stage. A striking example is the efficient insertion of carbon dioxide into the Au-Al bond of a gold-aluminyl complex. The reaction occurs via a cooperative mechanism, with the gold-aluminum bond being the actual nucleophile and the Al site also behaving as an electrophile. In the complex, the Au-Al bond has been shown to be mainly of an electron-sharing nature, with the two metal fragments displaying a diradical-like reactivity with CO2. In this work, the analogous reactivity with isostructural Au-X complexes (X = Al, Ga, and In) is computationally explored. We demonstrate that a kinetically and thermodynamically favorable reactivity with CO2 may only be expected for the gold-aluminyl complex. The Au-Al bond nature, which features the most (nonpolar) electron-sharing character among the Group 13 anions analyzed here, is responsible for its highest efficiency. The radical-like reactivity appears to be a key ingredient to stabilize the CO2 insertion product. This investigation elucidates the special role of Al in these hetero-binuclear compounds, providing new insights into the peculiar electronic structure of aluminyls, which may help for the rational control of their unprecedented reactivity toward carbon dioxide.

Copper-promoted site-selective carbonylation of sp3 and sp2 C-H bonds with nitromethane.

Project description:Copper-promoted direct carbonylation of unactivated sp3 C-H and aromatic sp2 C-H bonds of amides was developed using nitromethane as a novel carbonyl source. The sp3 C-H functionalization showed high site-selectivity by favoring the C-H bonds of α-methyl groups. The sp2 C-H carbonylation featured high regioselectivity and good functional group compatibility. Kinetic isotope effect studies indicated that the sp3 C-H bond breaking step is reversible, whereas the sp2 C-H bond cleavage is an irreversible but not the rate-determining step. Control experiments showed that a nitromethyl intermediate should be involved in the present reaction.

Inducing Nucleophilic Reactivity at Beryllium with an Aluminyl Ligand.

Project description:The reactions of anionic aluminium or gallium nucleophiles {K[E(NON)]}2 (E = Al, 1; Ga, 2; NON = 4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-ditert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene) with beryllocene (BeCp2) led to the displacement of one cyclopentadienyl ligand at beryllium and the formation of compounds containing Be-Al or Be-Ga bonds (NON)EBeCp (E = Al, 3; Ga, 4). The Be-Al bond in the beryllium-aluminyl complex [2.310(4) Å] is much shorter than that found in the small number of previous examples [2.368(2) to 2.432(6) Å], and quantum chemical calculations suggest the existence of a non-nuclear attractor (NNA) for the Be-Al interaction. This represents the first example of a NNA for a heteroatomic interaction in an isolated molecular complex. As a result of this unusual electronic structure and the similarity in the Pauling electronegativities of beryllium and aluminium, the charge at the beryllium center (+1.39) in 3 is calculated to be less positive than that of the aluminium center (+1.88). This calculated charge distribution suggests the possibility for nucleophilic behavior at beryllium and correlates with the observed reactivity of the beryllium-aluminyl complex with N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide─the electrophilic carbon center of the carbodiimide undergoes nucleophilic attack by beryllium, thereby yielding a beryllium-diaminocarbene complex.

Self-Assembly of Discrete Porphyrin/Calix[4]tube Complexes Promoted by Potassium Ion Encapsulation.

Project description:The pivotal role played by potassium ions in the noncovalent synthesis of discrete porphyrin-calixarene nanostructures has been examined. The flattened-cone conformation adopted by the two cavities of octa-cationic calix[4]tube C4T was found to prevent the formation of complexes with well-defined stoichiometry between this novel water-soluble calixarene and the tetra-anionic phenylsulfonate porphyrin CuTPPS. Conversely, preorganization of C4T into a C4v-symmetrical scaffold, triggered by potassium ion encapsulation (C4T@K+), allowed us to carry out an efficient hierarchical self-assembly process leading to 2D and 3D nanostructures. The stepwise formation of discrete CuTPPS/C4T@K+ noncovalent assemblies, containing up to 33 molecular elements, was conveniently monitored by UV/vis spectroscopy by following the absorbance of the porphyrin Soret band.
