Federated Learning Approach with Pre-Trained Deep Learning Models for COVID-19 Detection from Unsegmented CT images.

ABSTRACT: (1) Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) remains the current gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections in nasopharyngeal swabs. In Romania, the first reported patient to have contracted COVID-19 was officially declared on 26 February 2020. (2) Methods: This study proposes a federated learning approach with pre-trained deep learning models for COVID-19 detection. Three clients were locally deployed with their own dataset. The goal of the clients was to collaborate in order to obtain a global model without sharing samples from the dataset. The algorithm we developed was connected to our internal picture archiving and communication system and, after running backwards, it encountered chest CT changes suggestive for COVID-19 in a patient investigated in our medical imaging department on the 28 January 2020. (4) Conclusions: Based on our results, we recommend using an automated AI-assisted software in order to detect COVID-19 based on the lung imaging changes as an adjuvant diagnostic method to the current gold standard (RT-PCR) in order to greatly enhance the management of these patients and also limit the spread of the disease, not only to the general population but also to healthcare professionals.

Project description:Skin cancer poses a significant healthcare challenge, requiring precise and prompt diagnosis for effective treatment. While recent advances in deep learning have dramatically improved medical image analysis, including skin cancer classification, ensemble methods offer a pathway for further enhancing diagnostic accuracy. This study introduces a cutting-edge approach employing the Max Voting Ensemble Technique for robust skin cancer classification on ISIC 2018: Task 1-2 dataset. We incorporate a range of cutting-edge, pre-trained deep neural networks, including MobileNetV2, AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet50, DenseNet201, DenseNet121, InceptionV3, ResNet50V2, InceptionResNetV2, and Xception. These models have been extensively trained on skin cancer datasets, achieving individual accuracies ranging from 77.20% to 91.90%. Our method leverages the synergistic capabilities of these models by combining their complementary features to elevate classification performance further. In our approach, input images undergo preprocessing for model compatibility. The ensemble integrates the pre-trained models with their architectures and weights preserved. For each skin lesion image under examination, every model produces a prediction. These are subsequently aggregated using the max voting ensemble technique to yield the final classification, with the majority-voted class serving as the conclusive prediction. Through comprehensive testing on a diverse dataset, our ensemble outperformed individual models, attaining an accuracy of 93.18% and an AUC score of 0.9320, thus demonstrating superior diagnostic reliability and accuracy. We evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed method on the HAM10000 dataset to ensure its generalizability. Our ensemble method delivers a robust, reliable, and effective tool for the classification of skin cancer. By utilizing the power of advanced deep neural networks, we aim to assist healthcare professionals in achieving timely and accurate diagnoses, ultimately reducing mortality rates and enhancing patient outcomes.

Project description:ObjectivesTo utilize a deep learning model for automatic detection of abnormalities in chest CT images from COVID-19 patients and compare its quantitative determination performance with radiological residents.MethodsA deep learning algorithm consisted of lesion detection, segmentation, and location was trained and validated in 14,435 participants with chest CT images and definite pathogen diagnosis. The algorithm was tested in a non-overlapping dataset of 96 confirmed COVID-19 patients in three hospitals across China during the outbreak. Quantitative detection performance of the model was compared with three radiological residents with two experienced radiologists' reading reports as reference standard by assessing the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score.ResultsOf 96 patients, 88 had pneumonia lesions on CT images and 8 had no abnormities on CT images. For per-patient basis, the algorithm showed superior sensitivity of 1.00 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.95, 1.00) and F1 score of 0.97 in detecting lesions from CT images of COVID-19 pneumonia patients. While for per-lung lobe basis, the algorithm achieved a sensitivity of 0.96 (95% CI 0.94, 0.98) and a slightly inferior F1 score of 0.86. The median volume of lesions calculated by algorithm was 40.10 cm3. An average running speed of 20.3 s ± 5.8 per case demonstrated the algorithm was much faster than the residents in assessing CT images (all p < 0.017). The deep learning algorithm can also assist radiologists make quicker diagnosis (all p < 0.0001) with superior diagnostic performance.ConclusionsThe algorithm showed excellent performance in detecting COVID-19 pneumonia on chest CT images compared with resident radiologists.Key points• The higher sensitivity of deep learning model in detecting COVID-19 pneumonia were found compared with radiological residents on a per-lobe and per-patient basis. • The deep learning model improves diagnosis efficiency by shortening processing time. • The deep learning model can automatically calculate the volume of the lesions and whole lung.

Project description:PurposeTo develop a deep learning algorithm for the automatic assessment of the extent of systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related interstitial lung disease (ILD) on chest CT images.Materials and methodsThis retrospective study included 208 patients with SSc (median age, 57 years; 167 women) evaluated between January 2009 and October 2017. A multicomponent deep neural network (AtlasNet) was trained on 6888 fully annotated CT images (80% for training and 20% for validation) from 17 patients with no, mild, or severe lung disease. The model was tested on a dataset of 400 images from another 20 patients, independently partially annotated by three radiologist readers. The ILD contours from the three readers and the deep learning neural network were compared by using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). The correlation between disease extent obtained from the deep learning algorithm and that obtained by using pulmonary function tests (PFTs) was then evaluated in the remaining 171 patients and in an external validation dataset of 31 patients based on the analysis of all slices of the chest CT scan. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient (ρ) was calculated to evaluate the correlation between disease extent and PFT results.ResultsThe median DSCs between the readers and the deep learning ILD contours ranged from 0.74 to 0.75, whereas the median DSCs between contours from radiologists ranged from 0.68 to 0.71. The disease extent obtained from the algorithm, by analyzing the whole CT scan, correlated with the diffusion lung capacity for carbon monoxide, total lung capacity, and forced vital capacity (ρ = -0.76, -0.70, and -0.62, respectively; P < .001 for all) in the dataset for the correlation with PFT results. The disease extents correlated with diffusion lung capacity for carbon monoxide, total lung capacity, and forced vital capacity were ρ = -0.65, -0.70, and -0.57, respectively, in the external validation dataset (P < .001 for all).ConclusionThe developed algorithm performed similarly to radiologists for disease-extent contouring, which correlated with pulmonary function to assess CT images from patients with SSc-related ILD.Supplemental material is available for this article.© RSNA, 2020.
