Morphological and Eco-Geographic Variation in Algerian Wild Olives.

ABSTRACT: Algerian wild olives can represent an important resource for cultivated olive breeding, since they are characterized by great morphological variability. Moreover, they grow in different bioclimatic environments, including dry and hot climates, making the collections of wild olives a good source of abiotic stress resistance traits. Our study aimed to investigate the morphological diversity of 175 wild olive trees collected in North Algeria along with a wide range of different bioclimatic habitats for studying traits of olive accessions in relation to their different ecogeographical parameters. Wild olive trees were found in five different bioclimates areas spanning from humid to Saharan areas. They showed high variation in all traits, in particular fruit and stone weight, which expressed the highest coefficient of variation, and a high positive correlation between fruit weight/width. Cluster analysis separated the samples into two groups mostly based on fruit and stone size, while no relationship was observed with the area of sampling. Only the Saharan samples showed significantly different foliar and fruit characteristics compared to samples from other bioclimatic areas.

Project description:Genetic analyses and utilization of wild genetic variation for crop improvement in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) have been hampered by yield evaluation difficulties, identification of advantageous variation, and linkage drag. The lack of adaptation to cultivation conditions and the existence of highly structured populations make association mapping of diversity panels not optimal. Joint linkage mapping of nested populations avoids the later constraint, while populations crossed with a common domesticated parent allow the evaluation of wild variation within a more adapted background. Three domesticated by wild backcrossed-inbred-line populations (BC1S4) were developed using three wild accessions representing the full range of rainfall of the Mesoamerican wild bean distribution crossed to the elite drought tolerant domesticated parent SEA 5. These populations were evaluated under field conditions in three environments, two fully irrigated trials in two seasons and a simulated terminal drought in the second season. The goal was to test if these populations responded differently to drought stress and contained progenies with higher yield than SEA 5, not only under drought but also under water-watered conditions. Results revealed that the two populations derived from wild parents of the lower rainfall regions produced lines with higher yield compared to the domesticated parent in the three environments, i.e., both in the drought-stressed environment and in the well-watered treatments. Several progeny lines produced yields, which on average over the three environments were 20% higher than the SEA 5 yield. Twenty QTLs for yield were identified in 13 unique regions on eight of the 11 chromosomes of common bean. Five of these regions showed at least one wild allele that increased yield over the domesticated parent. The variation explained by these QTLs ranged from 0.6 to 5.4% of the total variation and the additive effects ranged from -164 to 277 kg ha-1, with evidence suggesting allelic series for some QTLs. Our results underscore the potential of wild variation, especially from drought-stressed regions, for bean crop improvement as well the identification of regions for efficient marker-assisted introgression.

Project description:Variation in leaf morphology is correlated with environmental variables, such as precipitation, temperature and soil composition. Several studies have pointed out that individual plasticity can largely explain the foliar phenotypic differences observed in populations due to climatic change and have suggested that the environment plays an important role in the evolution of plant species by selecting for phenotypic variation. Thus, the study of foliar morphology in plant populations can help us identify the environmental factors that have potentially influenced the process of species diversification. In this study, we analyzed morphological variation in the leaf traits of the Ternstroemia lineata species complex (Penthaphylacaceae) and its relation to climatic variables across the species distribution area to identify the patterns of morphological differentiation within this species complex. Based on the collected leaves of 270 individuals from 32 populations, we analyzed nine foliar traits using spatial interpolation models and multivariate statistics. A principal component analysis identified three main morphological traits (leaf length and two leaf shape variables) that were used to generate interpolated surface maps to detect discrete areas delimited by zones of rapid change in the values of the morphological traits. We identified a mosaic coarse-grain pattern of geographical distribution in the variation of foliar traits. According to the interpolation maps, we could define nine morphological groups and their geographic distributions. Longer leaves, spatulate leaves and the largest foliar area were located in sites with lower precipitation and higher seasonality of precipitation following a northwest-southeast direction and following significant latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. According to the phenogram of the relationships of the nine morphological groups based on morphological similarity, the putative species and subspecies of the T. lineata species complex did not show a clear pattern of differentiation. In this study, we found a complex pattern of differentiation with some isolated populations and some other contiguous populations differentiated by different traits. Further genetic and systematic studies are needed to clarify the evolutionary relationships in this species complex.

Project description:A wide genetic diversity has been reported for wild olives, which could be particularly interesting for the introgression of some agronomic traits and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in breeding programs. However, the introgression of some beneficial wild traits may be paralleled by negative effects on some other important agronomic and quality traits. From the quality point of view, virgin olive oil (VOO) from olive cultivars is highly appreciated for its fatty acid composition (high monounsaturated oleic acid content) and the presence of several minor components. However, the composition of VOO from wild origin and its comparison with VOO from olive cultivars has been scarcely studied. In this work, the variability for fruit characters (fruit weight and oil content, OC), fatty acid composition, and minor quality components (squalene, sterols and tocopherols content and composition) was studied in a set of plant materials involving three different origins: wild genotypes (n = 32), cultivars (n = 62) and genotypes belonging to cultivar × wild progenies (n = 62). As expected, values for fruit size and OC in wild olives were lower than those obtained in cultivated materials, with intermediate values for cultivar × wild progenies. Wild olives showed a remarkably higher C16:0 percentage and tocopherol content in comparison to the cultivars. Contrarily, lower C18:1 percentage, squalene and sterol content were found in the wild genotypes, while no clear differences were found among the different plant materials regarding composition of the tocopherol and phytosterol fractions. Some common highly significant correlations among components of the same chemical family were found in all groups of plant materials. However, some other correlations were specific for one of the groups. The results of the study suggested that the use of wild germplasm in olive breeding programs will not have a negative impact on fatty acid composition, tocopherol content, and tocopherol and phytosterol profiles provided that selection for these compounds is conducted from early generations. Important traits such as tocopherol content could be even improved by using wild parents.

Project description:Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima (L.) Arcang. and Beta macrocarpa Guss. are crop wild relative taxa belonging to the primary gene pool. They constitute a crucial gene reserve for enhancing cultivated Beta species (B. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris L.). Climate change poses a significant threat to genetic reservoir in Tunisia. We evaluated the morphological diversity of ten populations of B. vulgaris subsp. maritima and five populations of B. macrocarpa growing in different Tunisian bioclimatic and ecological areas using a set of 9 quantitative and 14 qualitative traits to promote the preservation and exploration of this germplasm. Variance component analysis of the quantitative data showed an important spectrum of variability, both within and between populations. The principal component analysis (PCA) allocated this wild Beta collection into three groups. G1 included the populations of B. macrocarpa that were characterized by the largest glomerules and heaviest seeds, while G2 included all B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations except one, i.e., N1015 that clustered into G3, which was characterized by the highest values of leaf characters. Similarly, qualitative traits exhibited a high diversity level (H'index ≥0.6) for almost all characters. The PCA divided these 15 populations into three groups as well: G'1 concerned the island B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations, characterized by prostrate growth habit and red inflorescences; G'2 included all B. macrocarpa populations characterized by erect-procumbent growth habit and very synchronous flowering pattern; and G'3 was formed by the mainland B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations, characterized by erect growth habit and hairy, curly leaves. The observed eco-geographic distribution patterns suggest that these wild relatives are highly adaptable to diverse and even extreme conditions (salinity, heat, and drought), highlighting their potential as resilient gene sources for beet breeding under the challenges of accelerating climate change.
