Project description:Across landscapes, shifts in species composition often co-occur with shifts in structural or abiotic habitat features, making it difficult to disentangle the role of competitors and environment on assessments of patch quality. Using over two decades of rodent community data from a long-term experiment, we show that a small, ubiquitous granivore (Chaetodipus penicillatus) shifted its use of different experimental treatments with the establishment of a novel competitor, C. baileyi. Shifts in residency, probability of movement between patches, and the arrival of new individuals in patches altered which treatment supported the highest abundances of C. penicillatus. Our results suggest that the establishment of a new species worsened the quality of the originally preferred treatment, likely by impacting resource availability. Paradoxically, the presence of the new species also increased C. penicillatus' use of the less preferred treatment, potentially through shifts in the competitive network on those plots.

Project description:Distance decay principles predict that species with larger geographic ranges would have greater intraspecific genetic diversity than more restricted species. However, invasive pest species may not follow this prediction, with confounding implications for tracking phenomena including original ranges, invasion pathways and source populations. We sequenced an 815 base-pair section of the COI gene for 441 specimens of Bactrocera correcta, 214 B. zonata and 372 Zeugodacus cucurbitae; three invasive pest fruit fly species with overlapping hostplants. For each species, we explored how many individuals would need to be included in a study to sample the majority of their haplotype diversity. We also tested for phylogeographic signal and used demographic estimators as a proxy for invasion potency. We find contrasting patterns of haplotype diversity amongst the species, where B. zonata has the highest diversity but most haplotypes were represented by singletons; B. correcta has ~7 dominant haplotypes more evenly distributed; Z. cucurbitae has a single dominant haplotype with closely related singletons in a 'star-shape' surrounding it. We discuss how these differing patterns relate to their invasion histories. None of the species showed meaningful phylogeographic patterns, possibly due to gene-flow between areas across their distributions, obscuring or eliminating substructure.

Project description:Correlations between annual recovery and survival probabilities estimated from tag-recovery data have been used to quantify the demographic response of exploited populations to harvest. Deane et al. (2023) evaluated the bias and certainty of correlation parameters between recovery and survival probabilities estimated as random effects drawn from bivariate normal distributions relative to different prior distributions and sample size combinations. Riecke et al. (2024) observed that we incorrectly parameterized a precision matrix with Gamma priors and suggested using a Gamma(1,1) prior distribution for the standard deviations as an alternative. Riecke et al. (2024) provided results from tag-recovery models that estimate mortality hazard rates after fitting these models to tag-recovery datasets with large sample sizes. Here, we fit tag-recovery models to the data we previously simulated (Deane et al. 2023) while using Gamma(1,1) as the prior distribution for standard deviations while parameterizing these models to estimate recovery and survival in discrete time or to estimate cause-specific mortality as hazard rates. We compare our new results to previous results obtained while using Uniform(0,5) prior distribution for the standard deviations. When sample sizes were large, correlation estimates obtained with either prior distribution provided similarly reliable parameter recovery and inference, replicating results of Riecke et al. (2024). With smaller sample sizes similar to those available for most duck populations in North America, correlations estimated with either prior distribution were uncertain and ambiguous. With decreasing sample sizes, annual survival was estimated with increasing uncertainty when compared to annual recovery, likely contributing to the poor ability to estimate correlation. Consistent with the original interpretation of Deane et al. (2023) and previous literature, we found correlations were often estimated with high uncertainty such that the sign (+ or -) may be the only attribute of these parameters that can be reliably interpreted.

Project description:Ionic currents, whether measured as conductance amplitude or as ion channel transcript numbers, can vary many-fold within a population of identified neurons. In invertebrate neuronal types multiple currents can be seen to vary while at the same time their magnitudes are correlated. These conductance amplitude correlations are thought to reflect a tight homeostasis of cellular excitability that enhances the robustness and stability of neuronal activity over long stretches of time. Although such ionic conductance correlations are well documented in invertebrates, they have not been reported in vertebrates. Here we demonstrate with two examples, identified mouse hippocampal granule cells (GCs) and cholinergic basal forebrain neurons, that the correlation of ionic conductance amplitudes between different ionic currents also exists in vertebrates, and we argue that it is a ubiquitous phenomenon expressed by many species across phyla. We further demonstrate that in dentate gyrus GCs these conductance correlations are likely regulated in a circadian manner. This is reminiscent of the known conductance regulation by neuromodulators in crustaceans. However, in GCs we observe a more nuanced regulation, where for some conductance pairs the correlations are completely eliminated while for others the correlation is quantitatively modified but not obliterated.

Project description:Hybridization between diverged taxa tests the strength of reproductive isolation and can therefore reveal mechanisms of reproductive isolation. However, it remains unclear how consistent reproductive isolation is across species' ranges and to what extent reproductive isolation might remain polymorphic as species diverge. To address these questions, we compared outcomes of hybridization across species pairs of Catostomus fishes in three rivers in the Upper Colorado River basin, where an introduced species, C. commersoni, hybridizes with at least two native species, C. discobolus and C. latipinnis. We observed substantial heterogeneity in outcomes of hybridization, both between species pairs and across geographically separate rivers within each species pair. We also observed hybridization of additional related species with our focal species, suggesting that reproductive isolation in this group involves interactions of multiple evolutionary and ecological factors. These findings suggest that a better understanding of the determinants of variation in reproductive isolation is needed and that studies of reproductive isolation in hybrids should consider how the dynamics and mechanisms of reproductive isolation vary over ecological space and over evolutionary time. Our results also have implications for the conservation and management of native catostomids in the Colorado River basin. Heterogeneity in outcomes of hybridization suggests that the threat posed by hybridization and genetic introgression to the persistence of native species probably varies with extent of reproductive isolation, both across rivers and across species pairs.

Project description:Harvest of wild organisms is an important component of human culture, economy, and recreation, but can also put species at risk of extinction. Decisions that guide successful management actions therefore rely on the ability of researchers to link changes in demographic processes to the anthropogenic actions or environmental changes that underlie variation in demographic parameters. Ecologists often use population models or maximum sustained yield curves to estimate the impacts of harvest on wildlife and fish populations. Applications of these models usually focus exclusively on the impact of harvest and often fail to consider adequately other potential, often collinear, mechanistic drivers of the observed relationships between harvest and demographic rates. In this study, we used an integrated population model and long-term data (1973-2016) to examine the relationships among hunting and natural mortality, the number of hunters, habitat conditions, and population size of blue-winged teal Spatula discors, an abundant North American dabbling duck with a relatively fast-paced life history strategy. Over the last two and a half decades of the study, teal abundance tripled, hunting mortality probability increased slightly ( <0.02 ), and natural mortality probability increased substantially ( >0.1 ) at greater population densities. We demonstrate strong density-dependent effects on natural mortality and fecundity as population density increased, indicative of compensatory harvest mortality and compensatory natality. Critically, an analysis that only assessed the relationship between survival and hunting mortality would spuriously indicate depensatory mortality due to multicollinearity between abundance, natural mortality and hunting mortality. Our findings demonstrate that models that only consider the direct effect of hunting on survival or natural mortality can fail to accurately assess the mechanistic impact of hunting on population dynamics due to multicollinearity among demographic drivers. This multicollinearity limits inference and may have strong impacts on applied management actions globally.

Project description:Accurate models that describe temporal-spatial parameters are desirable in gait estimation and rehabilitation. This study aimed to explore simple but relatively accurate models to describe stride length (SL), speed (SP) and walk ratio (WR) at various cadences. Twenty-four able-bodied participants (16 in a test group and 8 in a validation group) walked at seven cadence ratios (CRs). The individual and group mean SL, SP and WR were studied. Suitable temporal-spatial model structures were proposed and used to approximate the individual SL, SP and WR at various CRs. After the temporal-spatial model structures were found to be feasible, the general temporal-spatial models were analysed using the test group mean SL, SP and WR. Accuracy was assessed using the validation group mean values. Individual approximation accuracies showed that the proposed model structure deduced from the linear SL model was suitable for WR approximation. The linear, deduced quadratic and power functions approximated the individual SL, SP and WR, respectively, with high accuracy. Based on the test group mean SL, SP and WR, the general temporal-spatial models were obtained and produced comparable approximation accuracies in the validation group. The general temporal-spatial models predicted well the individual gait parameters with similar individual errors for both groups. These temporal-spatial models clearly describe SL, SP and especially WR at various cadences. They provide accurate reference data for gait estimation and have potential to guide speed modulation in robot-assisted gait rehabilitation. Project description:Coral bleaching events are increasing in frequency and severity, resulting in widespread losses in coral cover. However, branching corals native to highly variable (HV) thermal environments can have higher bleaching resistance than corals from more moderate habitats. Here, we investigated the response of two massive corals, Porites lobata and Goniastrea retiformis, from a moderately variable (MV) and a low variability (LV) pool transplanted into a HV pool on Ofu Island in American Samoa. Paired transplant and native ramets were exposed to an acute thermal stress after 6 and 12 months of exposure to the HV pool to evaluate changes in thermal tolerance limits. For both species, photosynthetic efficiency and chlorophyll loss following acute heat stress did not differ between ramets transplanted into the HV pool and respective native pool. Moreover, HV native P. lobata exhibited the greatest bleaching susceptibility compared to MV and LV natives and there was no effect of acute heat stress on MV P. lobata. There was also a thermal anomaly during the study, where Ofu's backreef thermal regime surpassed historical records-2015 had 8 degree heating weeks (DHW) and 2016 had up to 5 DHW (in comparison to less than or equal to 3 over the last 10 years)-which may have exceeded the upper thermal limits of HV native P. lobata. These results strongly contrast with other research on coral tolerance in variable environments, potentially underscoring species-specific mechanisms and regional thermal anomalies that may be equally important in shaping coral responses to extreme temperatures.

Project description:Theoretical studies suggest that temporal covariation among and temporal autocorrelation within demographic rates are important features of population dynamics. Yet, empirical studies have rarely focused on temporal covariation and autocorrelation limiting our understanding of these patterns in natural populations. This lack of knowledge restrains our ability to fully understand population dynamics and to make reliable population forecasts. In order to fill this gap, we used a long-term monitoring (15 years) of a kestrel Falco tinnunculus population to investigate covariation and autocorrelation in survival and reproduction at the population level and their impact on population dynamics. Using Bayesian joint analyses, we found support for positive covariation between survival and reproduction, but weak autocorrelation through time. This positive covariation was stronger in juveniles compared with adults. As expected for a specialized predator, we found that the reproductive performance was strongly related to an index of vole abundance explaining 86% of the temporal variation. This very strong relationship suggests that the temporally variable prey abundance may drive the positive covariation between survival and reproduction in this kestrel population. Simulations suggested that the observed effect size of covariation could be strong enough to affect population dynamics. More generally, positive covariation and autocorrelation have a destabilizing effect increasing substantially the temporal variability of population size.

Project description:Most demographic studies focus on numerical changes that occur within populations across years. However, typically studies at an interannual scale do not provide information on the particular times of the year (particular months or seasons) when rates of survival, recruitment, or migration increase or decrease due to physiological, behavioral or ecological processes. These monthly or seasonal changes in demographic parameters may lead to substantial variations in population abundance. In this study, we collected capture-mark-recapture data on 3 species of lizards of the genus Sceloporus (Sceloporus torquatus, Sceloporus grammicus and Sceloporus megalepidurus) found in ecologically similar habitats to examine potential changes in demographic rates among 3 different climatic seasons: rainy, cold-dry and warm-dry seasons. We tested different hypotheses about the effect of these seasons on survival, recruitment of new adults, and temporary emigration. We found that during the season with severe thermal constraints, the cold-dry season, survival of S. torquatus decreased markedly. We also detected a considerable increase in the recruitment rate of S. grammicus during the rainy season, when these lizards are establishing territories and finding mates. In contrast, we found no evidence of intra-annual changes in the rate of temporary emigration. In addition, we calculated abundance and population growth rates for each species and for each season. Our study represents a significant contribution to the understanding of intra-annual demographic variation in lizards.
