Improving Pharmacy Students' Clinical Knowledge on Providing Care for Patients Belonging to the LGBTQ+ Community.

ABSTRACT: A 12-question survey instrument was developed, pilot-tested, and administered to 191 pharmacy students in their first professional year after engaging in a learning activity focusing on topics across five categories with clinical relevance to providing care to the LGBTQ+ community. A paired student t-test was performed on survey tool pre-test and post-test survey responses, with p < 0.05 considered significant. A total of 183 usable pre-test and post-test survey responses were received. Statistically significant differences between the pre-test and post-test correct responses were observed for scenarios involving proper pronoun use, hormone therapy (HT) counseling, immunization best practices, and communication hesitancy. The greatest knowledge change was reported in the categories of immunization best practices (48.9%), HT counseling (33.6%), and pronoun use (22.8%). Active learning assignments are effective teaching strategies to promote clinical knowledge in providing inclusive and culturally competent care to LGBTQ+ patients. Clinical topic areas including proper pronoun use, HT counseling, immunization best practices, privacy, risk awareness, and communication hesitancy are effective curricula additions for pharmacy colleges to advance inclusive curricula concerning providing care to the LGBTQ+ community.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aimed to describe the effect of using an innovative teaching strategy using a video tutorial on enhancing students' knowledge about medication reconciliation, and skills in identifying medication discrepancies.MethodsThis is a one group pre-post interventional study that was conducted at the School of Pharmacy at Applied Science Private University. Sixty pharmacy students were invited to attend an educational sessions that involve watching a 6-minutes video tutorial. The first two levels of the Kirkpatrick's Model were used to evaluate the effectiveness of this training tool. Level 1 (Reaction) was assessed using a satisfaction questionnaire, while level 2 (Learning) was assessed using two criteria: 1) student acquired knowledge about medication reconciliation using a questionnaire and a knowledge score out of 13 was calculated for each student, and 2) student acquired skills in identifying medication discrepancies using a virtual case scenario. If the student was able to identify any of the four impeded discrepancies he/she rewarded 1 point for each identified discrepancy, but if they identified any incorrect discrepancy they scored a negative point.ResultsAmong the 60 students who registered to participate in the study, 49 attended the educational training (response rate 81.6%). The majority of them (n=44, 89.8%) were satisfied with the training process. Before the video tutorial, students showed an overall low knowledge score [4.08/13.0, SD 1.81], and low ability to identify discrepancies [0.72 identified discrepancies out of 4.0, SD 1.1]. Following the video tutorial, the overall knowledge score was improved (p<0.001), and students were able to identify more discrepancies after watching the video (p<0.001).ConclusionIn conclusion, video education has shown itself to be an effective method to educate pharmacy students.. This visualized method can be applied to other areas within pharmacy education. We encourage the integration of videos within the learning process to enhance students' learning experience and to support the traditional learning provided by the teaching staff.

Project description:BackgroundThe lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community experiences health disparities. It is thus imperative that medical trainees receive training in the care of LGBTQ community. The objective of this study was to identify gaps in knowledge and comfort among medical school students in providing care for the LGBTQ community.MethodsAn online survey was administered to medical students at 3 institutions in the United States from December 2020 to March 2021. Using a Likert scale, the survey assessed attitudes, comfort, and knowledge in providing care for the LGBTQ community. The survey included questions for each specific LGBTQ population. Results were quantified using descriptive and stratified analyses, and an exploratory factor analysis was used to calculate attitude summary measure (ASM) scores. A total knowledge score was calculated, with higher values indicating greater knowledge.ResultsAmong the 300 medical students who completed the survey, the majority were female (55.7%), White (54.7%), and heterosexual (64.3%). The majority of medical students felt comfortable (strongly agree/agree) participating in the care of lesbian (94.3%), gay (96.0%), and bisexual (96.3%) patients; this percentage dropped to 82.3% for non-binary and 71.3% for transgender patients. Only 27.0% of medical students reported confidence in their knowledge of health needs of transgender patients. LGBTQ self-identification, percent of core rotations completed in school, region of country, and friends and/or family who are part of the LGBTQ community were significantly associated with various ASM scores. Knowledge questions yielded high percentages of "neutral" responses, and medical students who identified as LGBTQ had significantly higher total knowledge scores.ConclusionsOverall, the surveyed medical students feel comfortable and willing to provide care for LGBTQ persons. But, there is limited knowledge about specific LGBTQ health needs. More education and training in the needs of transgender and non-binary patients, in particular, is indicated.

Project description:Introduction Possessing a correct and comprehensive foundation on the science of pharmacogenomics (PGx) is an important prerequisite for pharmacists to successfully apply pharmacogenomic testing to patient care. While some work has addressed general PGx knowledge among pharmacists, little research has specifically focused on PGx foundational knowledge. This study examines the level of foundational knowledge of PGx and interest in learning about PGx among community pharmacists and first-year pharmacy students at Beirut Arab University (BAU), Beirut, Lebanon. Methods A cross-sectional survey was self-administered to community pharmacists within a random sample of community pharmacies in Beirut, Lebanon, and to first-year BAU pharmacy students. The knowledge component of the instrument consisted of 25 items, each worth one point, addressing fundamental PGx information. The validity and internal consistency of the designed instrument were tested among the study population. Correlation analysis was carried out between aggregate knowledge and key variables for participating pharmacists. Results Of 150 approached pharmacists, 137 (91 %) participated and of 132 pharmacy students, 131 (99 %) participated. The average knowledge score for community pharmacists was 15 (Standard Deviation = 4) out of a possible total of 25 with the total number of correct answers ranging from 8 to 24 out of 25 questions. The average score for pharmacy students was 17 (Standard Deviation = 5) out of a possible total of 25 with the total number of correct answers ranging from 5 to 24. Pharmacists’ age and years of practice were associated with a lower aggregate knowledge score (r = −0.20; p < 0.05 and r = −0.21; p < 0.05), respectively. Pharmacists’ interest in learning about PGx varied whereas 62 % were either interested or very interested in learning about PGx. Students’ interest, however, was higher with 70 % being either interested or very interested. Specific PGx topics of interest to participants were highlighted. Conclusion This study identified areas where PGx foundational knowledge was acceptable and others where significant opportunities for improvement exist. These results add to the rapidly expanding field of pharmacogenomics education and practice in relation to pharmacy. In particular, these findings have significant implications for planning pharmacogenomics-related educational activities targeting current and future pharmacists.

Project description:BackgroundThe fact that pharmacists are in the front line of patients' care gives a great responsibility to focus on education and training of pharmacy students to build a 'patient-centered' clinicians. Unfortunately, pharmacy education in the developing countries, have been lagging behind actual practice delivered by pharmacists. This highlighted the need to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate pharmacy students regarding their current pharmacy training practices and experiences.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in Jordan during the period from August 2018 to October 2018. During the study period, a questionnaire was distributed to pharmacy students to collect information regarding 1) pharmaceutical care services provided by them during their experiential training, 2) their perceptions towards training sites, 3) their perceptions of the outcomes of their training experience, 4) information about their training site and 5) their demographics characteristics.ResultsA total of 202 pharmacy students responded to the questionnaire. The majority of them reported having the opportunity to dispense refill or new prescriptions (73.8%, n = 149), and conduct patient interviews (69.8%, n = 141, but they were not provided good opportunities to create electronic patient profiles using the information obtained (53.0%, n = 107), perform required dose calculations based on patient information (37.6%, n = 76), and interact with other healthcare professionals (34.6%, n = 70). In addition, students showed positive attitudes toward training sites, positive feedback about the outcomes of their training experience (median scores range between 4 and 5 for all statements (IQR = 1 for all)).ConclusionStudents showed positive feedback about the outcomes of their training experience, but they felt that the selected training sites do not have adequate resources to meet their training competencies. Memorandums of understanding development is needed to specify the purpose of training and define the responsibility for both parties of the training process.
