Project description:As one of the crystal phases of titania, TiO2(B) was first utilized as a catalyst carrier for the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). The mesoporous TiO2(B) loaded with Pt nanoparticles enhanced the HCHO oxidation reaction whose reaction rate was 4.5-8.4 times those of other crystalline TiO2-supported Pt catalysts. Simultaneously, Pt/TiO2(B) exhibited long-term stable HCHO oxidation performance. The structural characterization results showed that in comparison with Pt/anatase, Pt/TiO2(B) had more abundant hydroxyls, facilitating increasing the content of oxygen species. Studies on the role of hydroxyls in HCHO oxidation of Pt/TiO2(B) illustrated that synergistic involvement of terminally bound hydroxyls and bridging hydroxyls in HCHO oxidation accelerated the transformation from HCHO to formate via dioxymethylene. Moreover, hydroxyls could avoid the accumulation of excessive formate on Pt/TiO2(B) and promote the rapid oxidation of CO. Accordingly, the hydroxyl groups could accelerate each substep of formaldehyde oxidation, which enabled Pt/TiO2(B) to exhibit excellent formaldehyde oxidation performance.

Project description:A setup for fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with sub-second time resolution has been developed. This technique allows chemical speciation of low-concentrated materials embedded in highly absorbing matrices, which cannot be studied using transmission XAS. Using this setup, the reactivity of 1.5 wt% Pt/CeO2 catalyst was studied with 100 ms resolution during periodic cycling in CO- and oxygen-containing atmospheres in a plug-flow reactor. Measurements were performed at the Pt L3- and Ce L3-edges. The reactivity of platinum and cerium demonstrated a strong correlation. The oxidation of the catalyst starts on the ceria support helping the oxidation of platinum nanoparticles. The new time-resolved XAS setup can be applied to various systems, capable of reproducible cycling between different states triggered by gas atmosphere, light, temperature, etc. It opens up new perspectives for mechanistic studies on automotive catalysts, selective oxidation catalysts and photocatalysts.

Project description:The addition of platinum-group metals (PGMs, e.g., Pt) to CeO2 is used in heterogeneous catalysis to promote the rate of redox surface reactions. Well-defined model system studies have shown that PGMs facilitate H2 dissociation, H-spillover onto CeO2 surfaces, and CeO2 surface reduction. However, it remains unclear how the heterogeneous structures and interfaces that exist on powder catalysts influence the mechanistic picture of PGM-promoted H2 reactions on CeO2 surfaces developed from model system studies. Here, controlled catalyst synthesis, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), in situ infrared spectroscopy (IR), and in situ electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) were used to interrogate the mechanisms of how Pt nanoclusters and single atoms influence H2 reactions on high-surface area Pt/CeO2 powder catalysts. TPR showed that Pt promotes H2 consumption rates on Pt/CeO2 even when Pt exists on a small fraction of CeO2 particles, suggesting that H-spillover proceeds far from Pt-CeO2 interfaces and across CeO2-CeO2 particle interfaces. IR and EELS measurements provided evidence that Pt changes the mechanism of H2 activation and the rate limiting step for Ce3+, oxygen vacancy, and water formation as compared to pure CeO2. As a result, higher-saturation surface hydroxyl coverages can be achieved on Pt/CeO2 compared to pure CeO2. Further, Ce3+ formed by spillover-H from Pt is heterogeneously distributed and localized at and around interparticle CeO2-CeO2 boundaries, while activated H2 on pure CeO2 results in homogeneously distributed Ce3+. Ce3+ localization at and around CeO2-CeO2 boundaries for Pt/CeO2 is accompanied by surface reconstruction that enables faster rates of H2 consumption. This study reconciles the materials gap between model structures and powder catalysts for H2 reactions with Pt/CeO2 and highlights how the spatial heterogeneity of powder catalysts dictates the influence of Pt on H2 reactions at CeO2 surfaces.

Project description:Single atoms of platinum group metals on CeO2 represent a potential approach to lower precious metal requirements for automobile exhaust treatment catalysts. Here we show the dynamic evolution of two types of single-atom Pt (Pt1) on CeO2, i.e., adsorbed Pt1 in Pt/CeO2 and square planar Pt1 in PtATCeO2, fabricated at 500 °C and by atom-trapping method at 800 °C, respectively. Adsorbed Pt1 in Pt/CeO2 is mobile with the in situ formation of few-atom Pt clusters during CO oxidation, contributing to high reactivity with near-zero reaction order in CO. In contrast, square planar Pt1 in PtATCeO2 is strongly anchored to the support during CO oxidation leading to relatively low reactivity with a positive reaction order in CO. Reduction of both Pt/CeO2 and PtATCeO2 in CO transforms Pt1 to Pt nanoparticles. However, both catalysts retain the memory of their initial Pt1 state after reoxidative treatments, which illustrates the importance of the initial single-atom structure in practical applications.

Project description:Low temperature CO oxidation reaction is known to be facilitated over platinum supported on a reducible cerium oxide. Pt species act as binding sites for reactant CO molecules, and oxygen vacancies on surface of cerium oxide atomically activate the reactant O2 molecules. However, the impacts of size of Pt species and concentration of oxygen vacancy at the surface of cerium oxide on the CO oxidation reaction have not been clearly distinguished, thereby various diverse approaches have been suggested to date. Here using the co-precipitation method we have prepared pure ceria support and infiltrated it with Pt solution to obtain 0.5 atomic% Pt supported on cerium oxide catalyst, and then systematically varied the size of Pt from single atom to ∼1.7 nm sized nanoparticles and oxygen vacancy concentration at surface of cerium oxide by controlling the heat-treatment conditions, which are temperature and oxygen partial pressure. It is found that Pt nanoparticles in range of 1-1.7 nm achieve 100% of CO oxidation reaction at ∼100 °C lower temperature compared to Pt single atom owing to the facile adsorption of CO but weaker binding strength between Pt and CO molecules, and the oxygen vacancy in the vicinity of Pt accelerates CO oxidation below 150 °C. Based on this understanding, we show that a simple hydrogen reduction at 550 °C for the single atom Pt supported on CeO2 catalyst induces the formation of highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles with size of 1.7 ± 0.2 nm and the higher concentration of surface oxygen vacancies simultaneously, enabling 100% conversion from CO to CO2 at 200 °C as well as 16% conversion even at 150 °C owing to the synergistic effects of Pt nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies.

Project description:This study presents a TiO2/C hybrid material with biomimetic channels fabricated using a wood template. Repeated impregnations of pretreated wood chips in a Ti precursor were conducted, followed by calcination at 400-600 °C for 4 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The generated TiO2 nanocrystals were homogenously distributed inside a porous carbon framework. With an extremely low Pt catalyst loading (0.04-0.1 wt%), the obtained porous catalyst could effectively oxidize formaldehyde to CO2 and H2O even under room temperature (conv. ∼100%). Wood acted as both a structural template and reduction agent for Pt catalyst generation in sintering. Therefore, no post H2 reduction treatment for catalyst activation was required. The hierarchal channel structures, including 2-10 nm mesopores and 20 μm diameter channels, could be controlled by calcination temperature and atmosphere, which was confirmed by SEM and BET characterizations. Based on the abundant availability of wood templates and reduced cost for low Pt loading, this preparation method shows great potential for large-scale applications.

Project description:Hemilability is an important concept in homogeneous catalysis where both the reactant activation and the product formation can occur simultaneously through a reversible opening and closing of the metal-ligand coordination sphere. However, this effect has rarely been discussed in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, by employing a theoretical study on CO oxidation over substituted Cu1/CeO2 single atom catalysts, we show that dynamic evolution of metal-support coordination can significantly change the electronic structure of the active center. The evolution of the active center is shown to either strengthen or weaken the metal-adsorbate bonding as the reaction proceeds from reactants, through intermediates, to products. As a result, the activity of the catalyst can be increased. We explain our observations by extending hemilability effects to single atom heterogenous catalysts and anticipate that introducing this concept can offer a new insight into the important role active site dynamics have in catalysis toward the rational design of more sophisticated single atom catalyst materials.

Project description:Supported Pt catalyst has been intensively investigated for formaldehyde elimination owing to its superior reactivity at room temperature (RT). However, the high Pt content is challenging because of its high cost. Herein, we report PbO-supported Pt catalysts with only 0.1 wt % Pt, which can achieve complete conversion of formaldehyde and reliable stability at RT under demanding conditions. Both experiments and simulations demonstrate that PbO interacts strongly with the Pt species, resulting in tight Pb-O-Pt bonding at the metal/support interface and concomitant activation of the surface lattice oxygen of the support. Moreover, PbO exhibits an extremely high capacity of formaldehyde capture through methylene glycol chemisorption rather than the common hydroxyl-associated adsorption, presenting a different reaction mechanism because the active surface lattice oxygen in the vicinity of Pt species offers improved reactivity. This work provides a valuable example for the design of an efficient catalyst for formaldehyde and potentially oxidation of other carbohydrates.

Project description:Heterogeneous single-atom catalyst (SAC) opens a unique entry to establishing structure-performance relationship at the molecular level similar to that in homogeneous catalysis. The challenge lies in manipulating the coordination chemistry of single atoms without changing single-atom dispersion. Here, we develop an efficient synthetic method for SACs by using ethanediamine to chelate Pt cations and then removing the ethanediamine by a rapid thermal treatment (RTT) in inert atmosphere. The coordination chemistry of Pt single atoms on a Fe2O3 support is finely tuned by merely adjusting the RTT temperature. With the decrease in Pt-O coordination number, the oxidation state of Pt decreases, and consequently the hydrogenation activity increases to a record level without loss of chemoselectivity. The tunability of the local coordination chemistry, oxidation states of the metal, and the catalytic performance of single atoms reveals the unique role of SACs as a bridge between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Project description:Improving the low-temperature activity (below 100 °C) and noble-metal efficiency of automotive exhaust catalysts has been a continuous effort to eliminate cold-start emissions, yet great challenges remain. Here we report a strategy to activate the low-temperature performance of Pt catalysts on Cu-modified CeO2 supports based on redox-coupled atomic layer deposition. The interfacial reducibility and structure of composite catalysts have been precisely tuned by oxide doping and accurate control of Pt size. Cu-modified CeO2-supported Pt sub-nanoclusters demonstrate a remarkable performance with an onset of CO oxidation reactivity below room temperature, which is one order of magnitude more active than atomically-dispersed Pt catalysts. The Cu-O-Ce site with activated lattice oxygen anchors deposited Pt sub-nanoclusters, leading to a moderate CO adsorption strength at the interface that facilitates the low-temperature CO oxidation performance.
