Photonic passbands induced by optical fractal effect in Cantor dielectric multilayers.

ABSTRACT: We investigate the splitting and incorporation of optical fractal states in one-dimensional photonic quasi-crystals. The aperiodic crystals which are composed of two different dielectrics submit to Cantor sequence. Defects in Cantor crystals can greatly enhance the localization of electric field, which induces the optical fractal effect. The number of optical fractal states increases exponentially with the generation number of Cantor sequence. Moreover, the optical fractal characteristics depend on the incident angle of light, of which the fractal states may split/incorporate by modulating the value of incident angle. This study could be utilized for band-pass filters and reflectors.

Optical fractal in cryogenic environments based on distributed feedback Bragg photonic crystals.

Project description:We studied the optical fractal effect of the one-dimensional distributed feedback Bragg photonic crystals formed by semiconductor GaAs and dielectric TiO2. Light wave is transmitted in the intermediate dielectric slab and reflected back by the periodic photonic crystals at both ends, forming multiple fractal resonance output. The transmission channels expand exponentially by thickening the bulk in a cryogenic environment. The quality factor of each fractal resonant state improves with a greater periodic number of crystals. Furthermore, central wave of resonance has a blue-shift as the external pressure increases, while the influence of environment temperature on the fractal resonance could be ignored. It is hoped that our study can highlight the potential of these findings for designing multi-channel communication filters in cryogenic environments.

Photonic Floquet topological insulators in a fractal lattice.

Project description:We present Floquet fractal topological insulators: photonic topological insulators in a fractal-dimensional lattice consisting of helical waveguides. The helical modulation induces an artificial gauge field and leads to a trivial-to-topological phase transition. The quasi-energy spectrum shows the existence of topological edge states corresponding to real-space Chern number 1. We study the propagation of light along the outer edges of the fractal lattice and find that wavepackets move along the edges without penetrating into the bulk or backscattering even in the presence of disorder. In a similar vein, we find that the inner edges of the fractal lattice also exhibit robust transport when the fractal is of sufficiently high generation. Finally, we find topological edge states that span the circumference of a hybrid half-fractal, half-honeycomb lattice, passing from the edge of the honeycomb lattice to the edge of the fractal structure virtually without scattering, despite the transition from two dimensions to a fractal dimension. Our system offers a realizable experimental platform to study topological fractals and provides new directions for exploring topological physics.

Magneto-optical fingerprints of distinct graphene multilayers using the giant infrared Kerr effect.

Project description:The remarkable electronic properties of graphene strongly depend on the thickness and geometry of graphene stacks. This wide range of electronic tunability is of fundamental interest and has many applications in newly proposed devices. Using the mid-infrared, magneto-optical Kerr effect, we detect and identify over 18 interband cyclotron resonances (CR) that are associated with ABA and ABC stacked multilayers as well as monolayers that coexist in graphene that is epitaxially grown on 4H-SiC. Moreover, the magnetic field and photon energy dependence of these features enable us to explore the band structure, electron-hole band asymmetries, and mechanisms that activate a CR response in the Kerr effect for various multilayers that coexist in a single sample. Surprisingly, we find that the magnitude of monolayer Kerr effect CRs is not temperature dependent. This unexpected result reveals new questions about the underlying physics that makes such an effect possible.

Sigma-pi molecular dielectric multilayers for low-voltage organic thin-film transistors.

Project description:Very thin (2.3-5.5 nm) self-assembled organic dielectric multilayers have been integrated into organic thin-film transistor structures to achieve sub-1-V operating characteristics. These new dielectrics are fabricated by means of layer-by-layer solution phase deposition of molecular silicon precursors, resulting in smooth, nanostructurally well defined, strongly adherent, thermally stable, virtually pinhole-free, organosiloxane thin films having exceptionally large electrical capacitances (up to approximately 2,500 nF.cm(-2)), excellent insulating properties (leakage current densities as low as 10(-9) A.cm(-2)), and single-layer dielectric constant (k)of approximately 16. These 3D self-assembled multilayers enable organic thin-film transistor function at very low source-drain, gate, and threshold voltages (<1 V) and are compatible with a broad variety of vapor- or solution-deposited p- and n-channel organic semiconductors.

Gradient-induced long-range optical pulling force based on photonic band gap.

Project description:Optical pulling provides a new degree of freedom in optical manipulation. It is generally believed that long-range optical pulling forces cannot be generated by the gradient of the incident field. Here, we theoretically propose and numerically demonstrate the realization of a long-range optical pulling force stemming from a self-induced gradient field in the manipulated object. In analogy to potential barriers in quantum tunnelling, we use a photonic band gap design in order to obtain the intensity gradients inside a manipulated object placed in a photonic crystal waveguide, thereby achieving a pulling force. Unlike the usual scattering-type optical pulling forces, the proposed gradient-field approach does not require precise elimination of the reflection from the manipulated objects. In particular, the Einstein-Laub formalism is applied to design this unconventional gradient force. The magnitude of the force can be enhanced by a factor of up to 50 at the optical resonance of the manipulated object in the waveguide, making it insensitive to absorption. The developed approach helps to break the limitation of scattering forces to obtain long-range optical pulling for manipulation and sorting of nanoparticles and other nano-objects. The developed principle of using the band gap to obtain a pulling force may also be applied to other types of waves, such as acoustic or water waves, which are important for numerous applications.

Photonic Crystal Optical Parametric Oscillator.

Project description:We report a new class of Optical Parametric Oscillators, based on a 20μm-long semiconductor Photonic Crystal Cavity and operating at Telecom wavelengths. Because the confinement results from Bragg scattering, the optical cavity contains a few modes, approximately equispaced in frequency. Parametric oscillation is reached when these high Q modes are thermally tuned into a triply resonant configuration, whereas any other parametric interaction is strongly suppressed. The lowest pump power threshold is estimated to 50 - 70μW. This source behaves as an ideal degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillator addressing the needs in the field of quantum optical circuits, paving the way to the dense integration of highly efficient nonlinear sources of squeezed light or entangled photons pairs.

Photonic advantage of optical encoders.

Project description:Light's ability to perform massive linear operations in parallel has recently inspired numerous demonstrations of optics-assisted artificial neural networks (ANN). However, a clear system-level advantage of optics over purely digital ANN has not yet been established. While linear operations can indeed be optically performed very efficiently, the lack of nonlinearity and signal regeneration require high-power, low-latency signal transduction between optics and electronics. Additionally, a large power is needed for lasers and photodetectors, which are often neglected in the calculation of the total energy consumption. Here, instead of mapping traditional digital operations to optics, we co-designed a hybrid optical-digital ANN, that operates on incoherent light, and is thus amenable to operations under ambient light. Keeping the latency and power constant between a purely digital ANN and a hybrid optical-digital ANN, we identified a low-power/latency regime, where an optical encoder provides higher classification accuracy than a purely digital ANN. We estimate our optical encoder enables ∼10 kHz rate operation of a hybrid ANN with a power of only 23 mW. However, in that regime, the overall classification accuracy is lower than what is achievable with higher power and latency. Our results indicate that optics can be advantageous over digital ANN in applications, where the overall performance of the ANN can be relaxed to prioritize lower power and latency.

All-optical spin switching probability in [Tb/Co] multilayers.

Project description:Since the first experimental observation of all-optical switching phenomena, intensive research has been focused on finding suitable magnetic systems that can be integrated as storage elements within spintronic devices and whose magnetization can be controlled through ultra-short single laser pulses. We report here atomistic spin simulations of all-optical switching in multilayered structures alternating n monolayers of Tb and m monolayers of Co. By using a two temperature model, we numerically calculate the thermal variation of the magnetization of each sublattice as well as the magnetization dynamics of [[Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text]] multilayers upon incidence of a single laser pulse. In particular, the condition to observe thermally-induced magnetization switching is investigated upon varying systematically both the composition of the sample (n,m) and the laser fluence. The samples with one monolayer of Tb as [[Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text]] and [[Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text]] are showing thermally induced magnetization switching above a fluence threshold. The reversal mechanism is mediated by the residual magnetization of the Tb lattice while the Co is fully demagnetized in agreement with the models developed for ferrimagnetic alloys. The switching is however not fully deterministic but the error rate can be tuned by the damping parameter. Increasing the number of monolayers the switching becomes completely stochastic. The intermixing at the Tb/Co interfaces appears to be a promising way to reduce the stochasticity. These results predict for the first time the possibility of TIMS in [Tb/Co] multilayers and suggest the occurrence of sub-picosecond magnetization reversal using single laser pulses.

Defect engineering in organic semiconductor based metal-dielectric photonic crystals.

Project description:We investigate the band structure of metal-dielectric photonic crystals comprising stacked organic semiconductor microcavities with silver metal mirrors incorporating crystal defects: individual unit cells with aperiodic dimensionality. Both transfer matrix simulation and experimental verification are performed to investigate the impact on the photonic band structure as a single cavity is varied in size. The resulting mid-gap defect states are shown to hybridize with a photonic band at certain resonant dimensions. The resonance of the defect cavity affects the transmittance of light through the device, disrupting or enhancing the coupling between otherwise resonant cavities. We outline potential applications for defect engineering of these devices through controlled manipulation of the transmission spectrum.

Spectroscopic photonic force optical coherence elastography.

Project description:We demonstrate spectroscopic photonic force optical coherence elastography (PF-OCE). Oscillations of microparticles embedded in viscoelastic hydrogels were induced by harmonically modulated optical radiation pressure and measured by phase-sensitive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. PF-OCE can detect microparticle displacements with pico- to nano-meter sensitivity and millimeter-scale volumetric coverage. With spectroscopic PF-OCE, we quantified viscoelasticity over a broad frequency range from 1 Hz to 7 kHz, revealing rich microstructural dynamics of polymer networks across multiple microrheological regimes. Reconstructed frequency-dependent loss moduli of polyacrylamide hydrogels were observed to follow a general power scaling law G''∼ω0.75, consistent with that of semiflexible polymer networks. Spectroscopic PF-OCE provides an all-optical approach to microrheological studies with high sensitivity and high spatiotemporal resolution, and could be especially beneficial for time-lapse and volumetric mechanical characterization of viscoelastic materials.
