Project description:Mesoporous TiO2 films with enhanced photocatalytic activity in both UV and visible wavelength ranges were developed through a non-conventional atomic layer deposition (ALD) process at room temperature. Deposition at such a low temperature promotes the accumulation of by-products in the amorphous TiO2 films, caused by the incomplete hydrolysis of the TiCl4 precursor. The additional thermal annealing induces the fast recrystallisation of amorphous films, as well as an in situ acidic treatment of TiO2. The interplay between the deposition parameters, such as purge time, the amount of structural defects introduced and the enhancement of the photocatalytic properties from different mesoporous films clearly shows that our easily upscalable non-conventional ALD process is of great industrial interest for environmental remediation and other photocatalytic applications, such as hydrogen production.

Project description:Visible light-induced photocatalytic treatment of organic waste is considered a green and efficient route. This study explored the structural and photocatalytic performance of graphene quantum dot (GQD)-incorporated TiO2 nanocomposites to treat reactive yellow 145 (RY145) dye. For the effective removal of the RY145, efforts were made to better understand the kinetics of the process and optimization of the treatment parameters. Different GQD-doped TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized employing the sol-gel method. Physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized nanocomposites were studied through FTIR, XRD, UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, and EDX. Screening studies were conducted for synthesis and reaction optimization. The results indicated that GQD-TiO2 significantly enhanced the photocatalytic discoloration for RY145 dye. Among the synthesized nanocomposites, 15GQD-TiO2 calcined at 300 exhibited 99.3% RY145 discoloration in 30 min under visible light irradiation. Following the pseudo-first-order reaction, the photocatalytic reaction constant K app progressively declined with an increase in the concentration of RY145. The heterogeneous reaction system conformed to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood isotherm, as indicated by the K C (1.08 mg L-1 min-1) and the K LH (0.18 L mg-1) values. O2 •- was found to be the major contributor in GQD-TiO2-300 to decolorize RY154, while TiO2 and GQDs played a vital role in generation of electrons and holes. Additionally, after recycling to the seventh cycle, only 9% decline in photocatalytic performance was observed for the synthesized nanocomposite.

Project description:CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized by the conventional hot-injection method are photochromatic luminescent nanomaterials due to the photoinduced desorption and re-adsorption of the surface ligands. The apparent color and the luminescence intensity were changed significantly during excitation light irradiation and following dark storage; however, the emission wavelength was almost retained. This work investigates the change in emission color of light-emitting diode lighting using the CsPbBr3 NCs to realize photochromatic luminescence. The results showed definite shifts in emission color caused by changes in optical absorption and green luminescence intensity of the NCs, potentially broadening the application feasibility of CsPbBr3 NCs as photochromatic luminescent nanomaterials.

Project description:Concern about the effect of tetracycline (TC) on the ecosystem has been increasing due to its endurance and low decomposition. Photocatalysts have attracted extensive interest as alternatives to other ordinary wastewater treatment methods. A nanosized mesoporous phosphated TiO2 (P-TiO2) photocatalyst was fabricated to degrade TC under Xe lamp irradiation. The TC degradation and COD removal rate reached 98.97% and 79.16% within 30 min. Photocatalysts were characterized by SEM, HRTEM, BET, DRS, XRD, XPS and FT-IR techniques. 31 experiments were designed to identify the best conditions for photocatalytic degradation of TC by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD). 6 key operating parameters were selected to study their interrelationships by CCD design. Based on the experimental data and ANOVA, the coefficient of determination (R 2), the values of "Prob > F" and F-value were determined to be 0.9692, 0.002 and 7.87, respectively, which demonstrated that the model is significant. And the excellent correlation between the predicted and actual values also provided good confidence in the model. To achieve a higher removal rate of TC under appropriate and more economical experimental conditions, the optimum values of P-loading on TiO2, concentration of P-TiO2, irradiation time, photo intensity, pH and concentration of TC should be set to 17.45 wt%, 1.00 g L-1, 40.39 min, 5 A, 7, 29.93 mg L-1, respectively, in which the degradation of TC can reach 99.16%. Furthermore, the intermediates of TC verified by GC-MS analysis were mainly chains and rings. A possible pathway of photodegradation was also proposed.

Project description:This study shows an easy way to use electrochemistry and plasma layering to make Cobalt-Blue-TiO2 nanotubes that are better at catalysing reactions. Once a titanium plate has been anodized, certain steps are taken to make oxygen vacancies appear inside the TiO2 nanostructures. To find out how the Co deposition method changed the final catalyst's properties, it was put through electrochemical tests (to find the charge transfer resistance and flat band potential) and optical tests (to find the band gap and Urbach energy). The catalysts were also described in terms of their shape, ability to stick to surfaces, and ability to inhibit bacteria. When Cobalt was electrochemically deposited to Blue-TiO2 nanotubes, a film with star-shaped structures was made that was hydrophilic and antibacterial. The band gap energy went down from 3.04 eV to 2.88 eV and the Urbach energy went up from 1.171 eV to 3.836 eV using this electrochemical deposition method. Also, photodegradation tests with artificial doxycycline (DOX) water were carried out to see how useful the study results would be in real life. These extra experiments were meant to show how the research results could be used in real life and what benefits they might have. For the bacterial tests, both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were used, and BT/Co-E showed the best response. Additionally, photodegradation and photoelectrodegradation experiments using artificial doxycycline (DOX) water were conducted to determine the practical relevance of the research findings. The synergistic combination of light and applied potential leads to 70% DOX degradation after 60 min of BT/Co-E irradiation.

Project description:Heterostructured photocatalytic materials in the form of photonic crystals have been attracting attention for their unique light harvesting ability that can be ideally combined with judicious compositional modifications toward the development of visible light-activated (VLA) photonic catalysts, though practical environmental applications, such as the degradation of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants, have been rarely reported. Herein, heterostructured MoS2-TiO2 inverse opal films are introduced as highly active immobilized photocatalysts for the VLA degradation of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin broad-spectrum antibiotics as well as salicylic acid. A single-step co-assembly method was implemented for the challenging incorporation of MoS2 nanosheets into the nanocrystalline inverse opal walls. Compositional tuning and photonic band gap engineering of the MoS2-TiO2 photonic films showed that integration of low amounts of MoS2 nanosheets in the inverse opal framework maintains intact the periodic macropore structure and enhances the available surface area, resulting in efficient VLA antibiotic degradation far beyond the performance of benchmark TiO2 films. The combination of broadband MoS2 visible light absorption and photonic-assisted light trapping together with the enhanced charge separation that enables the generation of reactive oxygen species via firm interfacial coupling between MoS2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles is concluded as a competent approach for pharmaceutical abatement in water bodies.

Project description:TiO2 photocatalyst is of interest for antimicrobial coatings on hospital touch-surfaces. Recent research has focused on visible spectrum enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Here, we report TiO2 with a high degree of nanostructure, deposited on stainless steel as a solid layer more than 10 μm thick by pulsed-pressure-MOCVD. The TiO2 coating exhibits a rarely-reported microstructure comprising anatase and rutile in a composite with amorphous carbon. Columnar anatase single crystals are segmented into 15-20 nm thick plates, resulting in a mille-feuilles nanostructure. Polycrystalline rutile columns exhibit dendrite generation resembling pine tree strobili. We propose that high growth rate and co-deposition of carbon contribute to formation of the unique nanostructures. High vapor flux produces step-edge instabilities in the TiO2, and solid carbon preferentially co-deposits on certain high energy facets. The equivalent effective surface area of the nanostructured coating is estimated to be 100 times higher than standard TiO2 coatings and powders. The coatings prepared on stainless steel showed greater than 3-log reduction in viable E coli after 4 hours visible light exposure. The pp-MOCVD approach could represent an up-scalable manufacturing route for supported catalysts of functional nanostructured materials without having to make nanoparticles.

Project description:Herein, we report a one-dimensional (1D) S-doped K3Ti5NbO14@TiO2 (STNT) core-shell heterostructured composite with an enhanced photocatalytic degradation activity under visible light, which was prepared by a simple reassembly-calcination method using thiourea as the S source. The anisotropically shaped rods are favorable for the rapid transport of photogenerated charge carriers. The substitution of Ti4+ by S6+ is primarily incorporated into the lattice of the TiO2 shell so as to create an intra-band-gap state below the conduction band (CB) position, giving rise to Ti-O-S bonds and thus the visible light response. The presence of electron-deficient S atoms is of benefit to the decreased recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes by capturing electrons (e-). Meanwhile, a tight close interface between K3Ti5NbO14 and TiO2 was formed to achieve a nano-heterojunction structure, leading to the fostered separation of its interfacial photogenerated electrons and holes. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) by STNT composites is higher than that by pure K3Ti5NbO14, owing to the synergistic effects of S doping and heterojunction. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed with a reasonable discussion. This work may provide an insight into constructing highly efficient core-shell photocatalysts used toward sustainable environmental remediation and resource shortages.

Project description:A series of composite materials made of TiO2 and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) were prepared with a hydrothermal method and used as both adsorbents and photocatalysts for the adsorption and visible-light photodegradation of organic dyes in aqueous solutions. It is found that the blending of CMPs can significantly improve both the adsorption capacity and the photocatalytic degradation activity of TiO2 towards organic dyes.

Project description:A breakthrough in enhancing visible-light photocatalysis of wide-bandgap semiconductors such as prototypical titania (TiO2) via cocatalyst decoration is still challenged by insufficient heterojunctions and inevitable interfacial transport issues. Herein, we report a novel TiO2-based composite material composed of in situ generated polymorphic nanodomains including carbon nitride (C3N4) and (001)/(101)-faceted anatase nanocrystals. The introduction of ultrafine C3N4 results in the generation of many oxygen vacancies in the TiO2 lattice, and simultaneously induces the exposure and growth of anatase TiO2(001) facets with high surface energy. The photocatalytic performance of C3N4-induced TiO2 for degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol under visible-light irradiation was tested, its apparent rate being up to 1.49 × 10-2 min-1, almost 3.8 times as high as that for the pure TiO2 nanofibers. More significantly, even under low operation temperature and after a long-term photocatalytic process, the composite still exhibits exceptional degradation efficiency and stability. The normalized degradation efficiency and effective lifespan of the composite photocatalyst are far superior to other reported modified photocatalysts.
