Stacking Polymorphism in PtSe₂ Drastically Affects Its Electromechanical Properties.

ABSTRACT: PtSe₂ is one of the most promising materials for the next generation of piezoresistive sensors. However, the large-scale synthesis of homogeneous thin films with reproducible electromechanical properties is challenging due to polycrystallinity. It is shown that stacking phases other than the 1T phase become thermodynamically available at elevated temperatures that are common during synthesis. It is shown that these phases can make up a significant fraction in a polycrystalline thin film and discuss methods to characterize them, including their Seebeck coefficients. Lastly, their gauge factors, which vary strongly and heavily impact the performance of a nanoelectromechanical device are estimated.

Temperature-dependent optical and vibrational properties of PtSe2 thin films.

Project description:PtSe2 has received substantial research attention because of its intriguing physical properties and potential practical applications. In this paper, we investigated the optical properties of bilayer and multilayer PtSe2 thin films through spectroscopic ellipsometry over a spectral range of 0.73-6.42 eV and at temperatures between 4.5 and 500 K. At room temperature, the spectra of refractive index exhibited several anomalous dispersion features below 1000 nm and approached a constant value in the near-infrared frequency range. The thermo-optic coefficients of bilayer and multilayer PtSe2 thin films were (4.31 ± 0.04) × 10-4/K and (-9.20 ± 0.03) × 10-4/K at a wavelength of 1200 nm. Analysis of the optical absorption spectrum at room temperature confirmed that bilayer PtSe2 thin films had an indirect band gap of approximately 0.75 ± 0.01 eV, whereas multilayer PtSe2 thin films exhibited semimetal behavior. The band gap of bilayer PtSe2 thin films increased to 0.83 ± 0.01 eV at 4.5 K because of the suppression of electron-phonon interactions. Furthermore, the frequency shifts of Raman-active Eg and A1g phonon modes of both thin films in the temperature range between 10 and 500 K accorded with the predictions of the anharmonic model. These results provide basic information for the technological development of PtSe2-based optoelectronic and photonic devices at various temperatures.

Abnormal Seebeck Effect in Vertically Stacked 2D/2D PtSe2 /PtSe2 Homostructure.

Project description:When a thermoelectric (TE) material is deposited with a secondary TE material, the total Seebeck coefficient of the stacked layer is generally represented by a parallel conductor model. Accordingly, when TE material layers of the same thickness are stacked vertically, the total Seebeck coefficient in the transverse direction may change in a single layer. Here, an abnormal Seebeck effect in a stacked two-dimensional (2D) PtSe2 /PtSe2 homostructure film, i.e., an extra in-plane Seebeck voltage is produced by wet-transfer stacking at the interface between the PtSe2 layers under a transverse temperature gradient is reported. This abnormal Seebeck effect is referred to as the interfacial Seebeck effect in stacked PtSe2 /PtSe2 homostructures. This effect is attributed to the carrier-interface interaction, and has independent characteristics in relation to carrier concentration. It is confirmed that the in-plane Seebeck coefficient increases as the number of stacked PtSe2 layers increase and observed a high Seebeck coefficient exceeding ≈188 µV K-1 at 300 K in a four-layer-stacked PtSe2 /PtSe2 homostructure.

Controlled Synthesis of Ultrathin PtSe2 Nanosheets with Thickness-Tunable Electrical and Magnetoelectrical Properties.

Project description:Thickness-dependent chemical and physical properties have gained tremendous interest since the emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Despite attractive prospects, the thickness-controlled synthesis of ultrathin nanosheets remains an outstanding challenge. Here, a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route is reported to controllably synthesize high-quality PtSe2 nanosheets with tunable thickness and explore their thickness-dependent electronic and magnetotransport properties. Raman spectroscopic studies demonstrate all Eg , A1 g , A2 u , and Eu modes are red shift in thicker nanosheets. Electrical measurements demonstrate the 1.7 nm thick nanosheet is a semiconductor with room temperature field-effect mobility of 66 cm2 V-1 s-1 and on/off ratio of 106 . The 2.3-3.8 nm thick nanosheets show slightly gated modulation with high field-effect mobility up to 324 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room-temperature. When the thickness is over 3.8 nm, the nanosheets show metallic behavior with conductivity and breakdown current density up to 6.8 × 105 S m-1 and 6.9 × 107 A cm-2 , respectively. Interestingly, magnetoresistance (MR) studies reveal magnetic orders exist in this intrinsically non-magnetic material system, as manifested by the thickness-dependent Kondo effect, where both metal to insulator transition and negative MR appear upon cooling. Together, these studies suggest that PtSe2 is an intriguing system for both developing novel functional electronics and conducting fundamental 2D magnetism study.

First-principles study on optoelectronic properties of Cs2PbX4-PtSe2 van der Waals heterostructures.

Project description:In order to achieve low-cost, high efficiency and stable photoelectric devices, two-dimensional (2D) inorganic halide perovskite photosensitive layers need to cooperate with other functional layers. Here, we investigate the structure, stability and optical properties of perovskite and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures using first-principles calculations. Firstly, Cs2PbX4-PtSe2 (X = Cl, Br, I) heterostructures are stable because of negative interface binding energy. With the halogen varying from Cl to I, the interface binding energies of Cs2PbX4-PtSe2 heterostructures decrease rapidly. 2D Cs2PbCl4-PtSe2, Cs2PbBr4-PtSe2 and Cs2PbI4-PtSe2 heterostructures have an indirect bandgap with the value of 1.28, 1.02, and 1.29 eV, respectively, which approach the optimal bandgap (1.34 eV) for solar cells. In the contact state, the electrons transfer from the PtSe2 monolayer to Cs2PbX4 monolayer and only the Cs2PbBr4-PtSe2 heterostructure maintains the type-II band alignment. The Cs2PbBr4-PtSe2 heterostructure has the strongest charge transfer among the three Cs2PbX4-PtSe2 heterostructures because it has the lowest tunnel barrier height (ΔT) and the highest potential difference value (ΔEP). Furthermore, the light absorption coefficient of Cs2PbX4-MSe2 heterostructures is at least two times higher than that of monolayer 2D inorganic halide perovskites. With the halogen varying from Cl to I, the light absorption coefficients of the Cs2PbX4-PtSe2 heterostructures increase rapidly in the visible region. Above all, the Cs2PbX4-MSe2 heterostructures have broad application prospects in photodetectors, solar cells and other fields.

Probing magnetism in atomically thin semiconducting PtSe2.

Project description:Atomic-scale disorder in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is often accompanied by local magnetic moments, which can conceivably induce long-range magnetic ordering into intrinsically non-magnetic materials. Here, we demonstrate the signature of long-range magnetic orderings in defective mono- and bi-layer semiconducting PtSe2 by performing magnetoresistance measurements under both lateral and vertical measurement configurations. As the material is thinned down from bi- to mono-layer thickness, we observe a ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic crossover, a behavior which is opposite to the one observed in the prototypical 2D magnet CrI3. Our first-principles calculations, supported by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy imaging of point defects, associate this transition to the interplay between the defect-induced magnetism and the interlayer interactions in PtSe2. Furthermore, we show that graphene can be effectively used to probe the magnetization of adjacent semiconducting PtSe2. Our findings in an ultimately scaled monolayer system lay the foundation for atom-by-atom engineering of magnetism in otherwise non-magnetic 2D materials.

Optical Characterization of Few-Layer PtSe2 Nanosheet Films.

Project description:Thin films of transition-metal dichalcogenides are potential materials for optoelectronic applications. However, the application of these materials in practice requires knowledge of their fundamental optical properties. Many existing methods determine optical constants using predefined models. Here, a different approach was used. We determine the sheet conductance and absorption coefficient of few-layer PtSe2 in the infrared and UV-vis ranges without recourse to any particular model for the optical constants. PtSe2 samples with a thickness of about 3-4 layers were prepared by selenization of 0.5 nm thick platinum films on sapphire substrates at different temperatures. Differential reflectance was extracted from transmittance and reflectance measurements from the front and back of the sample. The film thickness, limited to a few atomic layers, allowed a thin-film approximation to calculate the optical conductance and absorption coefficient. The former has a very different energy dependence in the infrared, near-infrared, and visible ranges. The absorption coefficient exhibits a strong power-law dependence on energy with an exponent larger than three in the mid-infrared and near-infrared regions. We have not observed any evidence for a band gap in PtSe2 thin layers down to an energy of 0.4 eV from our optical measurements.

Stacking-Order-Dependent Excitonic Properties Reveal Interlayer Interactions in Bulk ReS2.

Project description:Rhenium disulfide, a member of the transition metal dichalcogenide family of semiconducting materials, is unique among 2D van der Waals materials due to its anisotropy and, albeit weak, interlayer interactions, confining excitons within single atomic layers and leading to monolayer-like excitonic properties even in bulk crystals. While recent work has established the existence of two stacking modes in bulk, AA and AB, the influence of the different interlayer coupling on the excitonic properties has been poorly explored. Here, we use polarization-dependent optical measurements to elucidate the nature of excitons in AA and AB-stacked rhenium disulfide to obtain insight into the effect of interlayer interactions. We combine polarization-dependent Raman with low-temperature photoluminescence and reflection spectroscopy to show that, while the similar polarization dependence of both stacking orders indicates similar excitonic alignments within the crystal planes, differences in peak width, position, and degree of anisotropy reveal a different degree of interlayer coupling. DFT calculations confirm the very similar band structure of the two stacking orders while revealing a change of the spin-split states at the top of the valence band to possibly underlie their different exciton binding energies. These results suggest that the excitonic properties are largely determined by in-plane interactions, however, strongly modified by the interlayer coupling. These modifications are stronger than those in other 2D semiconductors, making ReS2 an excellent platform for investigating stacking as a tuning parameter for 2D materials. Furthermore, the optical anisotropy makes this material an interesting candidate for polarization-sensitive applications such as photodetectors and polarimetry.

Defect induced, layer-modulated magnetism in ultrathin metallic PtSe2.

Project description:Defects are ubiquitous in solids and often introduce new properties that are absent in pristine materials. One of the opportunities offered by these crystal imperfections is an extrinsically induced long-range magnetic ordering1, a long-time subject of theoretical investigations1-3. Intrinsic, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials4-7 are attracting increasing attention for their unique properties, which include layer-dependent magnetism4 and electric field modulation6. Yet, to induce magnetism into otherwise non-magnetic 2D materials remains a challenge. Here we investigate magneto-transport properties of ultrathin PtSe2 crystals and demonstrate an unexpected magnetism. Our electrical measurements show the existence of either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ground-state orderings that depends on the number of layers in this ultrathin material. The change in the device resistance on the application of a ~25 mT magnetic field is as high as 400 Ω with a magnetoresistance value of 5%. Our first-principles calculations suggest that surface magnetism induced by the presence of Pt vacancies and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange couplings across ultrathin films of PtSe2 are responsible for the observed layer-dependent magnetism. Given the existence of such unavoidable growth-related vacancies in 2D materials8,9, these findings can expand the range of 2D ferromagnets into materials that would otherwise be overlooked.

Defect-gradient-induced Rashba effect in van der Waals PtSe2 layers.

Project description:Defect engineering is one of the key technologies in materials science, enriching the modern semiconductor industry and providing good test-beds for solid-state physics. While homogenous doping prevails in conventional defect engineering, various artificial defect distributions have been predicted to induce desired physical properties in host materials, especially associated with symmetry breakings. Here, we show layer-by-layer defect-gradients in two-dimensional PtSe2 films developed by selective plasma treatments, which break spatial inversion symmetry and give rise to the Rashba effect. Scanning transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal that Se vacancies extend down to 7 nm from the surface and Se/Pt ratio exhibits linear variation along the layers. The Rashba effect induced by broken inversion symmetry is demonstrated through the observations of nonreciprocal transport behaviors and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Our methodology paves the way for functional defect engineering that entangles spin and momentum of itinerant electrons for emerging electronic applications.

Embedding Pd into SnO2 drastically enhances gas sensing.

Project description:Combustion aerosol processes can uniquely embed noble metals into semiconducting particles. Here, monocrystalline SnO2 particles embedded with Pd and/or PdOx were made by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) of appropriate precursors through microexplosions by droplet-to-particle conversion as the crystal size was proportional to the cube root of precursor solution concentration, C. These particles were air-annealed and leached with nitric acid for removal of metallic Pd from their surface. The SnO2 crystal size varied from 11 to 24 nm and was in close agreement with the primary particle size determined by nitrogen adsorption. The embedded fraction of Pd ranged from about 30 to 80% of the nominal Pd-content. This was achieved by judiciously varying the C, Pd content and the ratio of precursor solution to dispersion oxygen flowrates during FSP. The response of sensors made by doctor blading films of such particles to 1 ppm of acetone and CO was evaluated at 350 °C and 50% relative humidity. Embedding Pd/PdOx into SnO2 significantly increased the sensor response: 2-6 times over that of pure or conventionally-made Pd-containing SnO2 sensors at low nominal Pd-contents (0.2 mol%). For higher ones (i.e. 1 mol% Pd), the sensor response was enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude. This is attributed to Pd atoms in the SnO2 lattice near the particle surface and/or Pd/PdOx clusters acting as nanoelectrodes into SnO2 films and altering their transducing properties as shown by high resolution electron microscopy, XPS and baseline resistance measurements of pure and Pd-embedded SnO2 sensing films.
