A Phenomenological Psychology Study of University Teachers' Lived Experience of Being Pedagogical in Neoliberalism.

ABSTRACT: Against a background of promoting the industrialization of higher education in Macau due to COVID-19's damage to the territory's major industry-gambling, the present study adopted phenomenological psychology to explore teachers' lived experience of being pedagogical in a university with a neoliberal vision and mission. Using a general structure, the findings revealed that teachers encountered challenges being pedagogical. These challenges emerged not only due to the university's corporate management, but more importantly because of a shift in perceptions-where students became like customers and teachers became self-interested-which made pedagogical relationships difficult to establish. Furthermore, teachers were found to develop negative emotions when their pedagogical actions or intentions conflicted with neoliberalism. The findings suggest that pedagogy in higher education is being challenged and transformed.

Project description:BackgroundChronic kidney disease is common, affecting up to 13 % of the global population, and is predicted to become the fifth leading cause of 'life years lost' by 2040. Individuals with end-stage kidney disease commonly develop complications such as protein-energy wasting and cachexia which further worsens their prognosis. The syndrome of 'renal cachexia' is poorly understood, under-diagnosed and even if recognised has limited treatment options.ObjectiveTo explore the lived experience of renal cachexia for individuals with end-stage kidney disease and the interrelated experiences of their carers.DesignThis interpretive phenomenological study was designed to facilitate an in-depth exploration of how patients and carers experience of renal cachexia. To improve and document the quality, transparency, and consistency of patient and public involvement in this study the Guidance for Reporting Involvement of Patients and the Public-Short Format was followed.SettingThe study was conducted across two nephrology directorates, within two healthcare trusts in the United Kingdom.ParticipantsSeven participants who met the inclusion criteria were recruited for this study, four patients (three female, one male) and three carers (two male, one female).MethodsWe employed a purposive sampling strategy. Data collection was conducted between July 2022 and December 2023. Interviews were semi-structured, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed in six steps by two researchers using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Ethical approval was approved by the Office for Research Ethics Committees Northern Ireland (Reference: 22/NI/0107).ResultsAnalysis generated six group experiential themes: the lived experience of appetite loss, functional decline and temporal coping, weight loss a visual metaphor of concern, social withdrawal and vulnerability, the emotional toll of eating challenges and psychological strain amidst a lack of information about cachexia.ConclusionThis is the first qualitative study exploring the lived experience of renal cachexia for patients and carers. Our study highlights that psycho-social and educational support is urgently needed. Additionally, healthcare professionals need better information provision to help them to recognise and respond to the needs of this population. Further research is required to develop models of holistic support which could help patients and carers cope with the impact of renal cachexia and optimally manage this syndrome within the family unit.RegistrationN/A.

Project description:BackgroundPregnancy and the postpartum period are incredibly challenging for women living with the Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV) due to the multidimensional influence of HIV infection. These women experience the challenges of navigating pregnancy and motherhood while living with HIV. It is poorly understood how women living with HIV (WLWH) experience pregnancy and postpartum. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the lived experience of pregnancy and postpartum among women living with HIV.MethodsA phenomenological qualitative study design was employed. A semi-structured, interview guide was used to conduct in-depth interviews with HIV-positive postpartum women from April to May 2022. All interviews were recorded using a voice recorder and note was taken. The collected data were transcribed and translated into English for analysis. Inductive thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data.ResultsSix main themes about the lived experience of women living with HIV were identified: (1) Fear and distress related to maternal and child Health, (2) HIV status self-disclosure dilemma, (3) Courage and commitment of HIV-positive women to prevent HIV, (4) Challenges faced and coping mechanisms used by HIV-positive women, (5) Health care providers and HIV-positive women interaction, and (6) Solution from their voices.ConclusionHIV infection also has a multidimensional impact on women's life during pregnancy and postpartum. The findings of this study improve our understanding of the lived experience of HIV-positive women while pregnant and in the postpartum period. These women's descriptions showed that they have been experiencing various challenges that are not often addressed in antenatal clinics, such as distress and uncertainties related to vertical transmission of HIV. These women need specialized support and all-encompassing care to have a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period. Moreover, it is essential to understand the circumstances of women's lives, their relationships with others, and their decision-making processes. Healthcare professionals and other responsible bodies working with women living with HIV should encourage and support these mothers to appraise and maintain their commitment to protecting their children from acquiring HIV infection and maintaining their Health to the maximum to raise their children.
