Project description:Hypervalent iodine(V) reagents are a powerful class of organic oxidants. While the use of I(V) compounds Dess-Martin periodinane and IBX is widespread, this reagent class has long been plagued by issues of solubility and stability. Extensive effort has been made for derivatizing these scaffolds to modulate reactivity and physical properties but considerable room for innovation still exists. Herein, we describe the preparation, thermal stability, optimized geometries, and synthetic utility of an emerging class of I(V) reagents, Bi(N)-HVIs, possessing datively bound bidentate nitrogen ligands on the iodine center. Bi(N)-HVIs display favorable safety profiles, improved solubility, and comparable to superior oxidative reactivity relative to common I(V) reagents. The highly modular synthesis and in situ generation of Bi(N)-HVIs provides a novel and convenient screening platform for I(V) reagent and reaction development.

Project description:Fluorinated groups are essential for drug design, agrochemicals, and materials science. The bis(trifluoromethyl)amino group is an example of a stable group that has a high potential. While the number of molecules containing perfluoroalkyl, perfluoroalkoxy, and other fluorinated groups is steadily increasing, examples with the N(CF3 )2 group are rare. One reason is that transfer reagents are scarce and metal-based storable reagents are unknown. Herein, a set of CuI and AgI bis(trifluoromethyl)amido complexes stabilized by N- and P-donor ligands with unprecedented stability are presented. The complexes are stable solids that can even be manipulated in air for a short time. They are bis(trifluoromethyl)amination reagents as shown by nucleophilic substitution and Sandmeyer reactions. In addition to a series of benzylbis(trifluoromethyl)amines, 2-bis(trifluoromethyl)amino acetate was obtained, which, upon hydrolysis, gives the fluorinated amino acid N,N-bis(trifluoromethyl)glycine.

Project description:Despite their broad utility, the synthesis of ortho-quinones remains a significant challenge, in particular, access to electron-deficient derivatives remains an unsolved problem. Reported here is the first general method for the synthesis of electron-deficient ortho-quinones by direct oxidation of phenols. The reaction is enabled by a novel bidentate nitrogen-ligated iodine(V) reagent, a previously unexplored class of compounds which we have termed Bi(N)-HVIs. The reaction is extremely general and proceeds with excellent regioselectivity for the ortho over para isomer. Functionalization of the ortho-quinone products was examined, resulting in a facile one-pot synthesis of catechols, as well as the incorporation of a variety of heteroatom nucleophiles. This method represents the first synthetic application of Bi(N)-HVIs and demonstrates their potential as a platform for the further development of highly reactive, but also highly tunable, I(V) reagents.

Project description:A set of novel, easily synthesized aluminum complexes, Al[κ2-N,N-2-(methylamino)pyridine]2R (R = Et, iBu) are reported. When subjected to 1 atm of CO2 pressure, each hemilabile pyridine arm dissociates and facilitates cooperative activation of the CO2 substrate reminiscent of a Frustrated Lewis Pair. This reaction has limited precedent for Al/N based Lewis Pair systems, and this is the first system readily shown to sequester multiple equivalents of CO2 per aluminum center. The ethyl variant then reacts further, inserting a third equivalent of CO2 into the aluminum alkyl to generate an aluminum carboxylate. Examples of this type of reactivity are rare under thermal conditions. A joint experimental/computational study supports the proposed reaction mechanism.

Project description:Togni's benziodoxole-based reagents are widely used in trifluoromethylation reactions. It has been established that the kinetically stable hypervalent iodine form (I-CF3) of the reagents is thermodynamically less stable than its acyclic ether isomer (O-CF3). On the other hand, the trifluoromethylthio analogue exists in the thermodynamically stable thioperoxide form (O-SCF3), and the hypervalent form (I-SCF3) has been elusive. Despite the importance of these reagents, very little is known about the reaction mechanisms of their syntheses, which has hampered the development of new reagents of the same family. Herein, we use density functional theory calculations to understand the reasons for the divergent behaviors between the CF3 and SCF3 reagents. We demonstrate that they follow different mechanisms of formation and that the metals involved in the syntheses (potassium in the case of the trifluoromethyl reagent and silver in the trifluoromethylthio analogue) play key roles in the mechanisms and greatly influence the possibility of their rearrangements from the hypervalent (I-CF3, I-SCF3) to the corresponding ether-type form (O-CF3, O-SCF3).

Project description:The known iron(II) complex [Fe(II)(LN3S)(OTf)] (1) was used as starting material to prepare the new biomimetic (N4S(thiolate)) iron(II) complexes [Fe(II)(LN3S)(py)](OTf) (2) and [Fe(II)(LN3S)(DMAP)](OTf) (3), where LN3S is a tetradentate bis(imino)pyridine (BIP) derivative with a covalently tethered phenylthiolate donor. These complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic analysis, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Mössbauer spectroscopy, as well as electrochemistry. A nickel(II) analogue, [Ni(II)(LN3S)](BF4) (5), was also synthesized and characterized by structural and spectroscopic methods. Cyclic voltammetric studies showed 1-3 and 5 undergo a single reduction process with E(1/2) between -0.9 V to -1.2 V versus Fc(+)/Fc. Treatment of 3 with 0.5% Na/Hg amalgam gave the monoreduced complex [Fe(LN3S)(DMAP)](0) (4), which was characterized by X-ray crystallography, UV-vis spectroscopic analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy (g = [2.155, 2.057, 2.038]), and Mössbauer (? = 0.33 mm s(-1); ?E(Q) = 2.04 mm s(-1)) spectroscopy. Computational methods (DFT) were employed to model complexes 3-5. The combined experimental and computational studies show that 1-3 are 5-coordinate, high-spin (S = 2) Fe(II) complexes, whereas 4 is best described as a 5-coordinate, intermediate-spin (S = 1) Fe(II) complex antiferromagnetically coupled to a ligand radical. This unique electronic configuration leads to an overall doublet spin (S(total) = 1/2) ground state. Complexes 2 and 3 are shown to react with O2 to give S-oxygenated products, as previously reported for 1. In contrast, the monoreduced 4 appears to react with O2 to give a mixture of sulfur oxygenates and iron oxygenates. The nickel(II) complex 5 does not react with O2, and even when the monoreduced nickel complex is produced, it appears to undergo only outer-sphere oxidation with O2.

Project description:PhI(OTf)2 and related ArI(OTf)2 species have been incorrectly invoked as intermediates in oxidation reactions for many years. We recently established that such compounds did not yet exist but remain an attractive target. Here we describe the synthesis, isolation, and structural characterization of NO2 -PhI(OTf)2, which is resistant to decomposition and more reactive than PhI(OTf)(OAc), the species previously misidentified as PhI(OTf)2 .

Project description:In this study, the mechanistic and kinetic analysis for reactions of CF3OCH(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H with OH radicals and Cl atoms have been performed at the CCSD(T)//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Kinetic isotope effects for reactions CF3OCH(CF3)2/CF3OCD(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H/CF3OCF2CF2D with OH and Cl were estimated so as to provide the theoretical estimation for future laboratory investigation. All rate constants, computed by canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) with the small-curvature tunneling correction (SCT), are in reasonable agreement with the limited experimental data. Standard enthalpies of formation for the species were also calculated. Atmospheric lifetime and global warming potentials (GWPs) of the reaction species were estimated, the large lifetimes and GWPs show that the environmental impact of them cannot be ignored. The organic nitrates can be produced by the further oxidation of CF3OC(•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2• in the presence of O2 and NO. The subsequent decomposition pathways of CF3OC(O•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2O• radicals were studied in detail. The derived Arrhenius expressions for the rate coefficients over 230-350 K are: k T(1) = 5.00 × 10-24T3.57 exp(-849.73/T), k T(2) = 1.79 × 10-24T4.84 exp(-4262.65/T), kT(3) = 1.94 × 10-24 T4.18 exp(-884.26/T), and k T(4) = 9.44 × 10-28T5.25 exp(-913.45/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1.

Project description:Treatment of an unsymmetrical bis(imino)pyridyl-thiolate zinc(II) complex [Zn(II)(LN(3)S)(OTf)] (1) with LiAlH(4) results in the double reduction of the two imino groups in the ligand backbone, and at the same time causes a rare transmetalation reaction to occur. The products formed in this reaction are two novel aluminium(III) bis(amido)pyridyl-thiolate complexes [(R,S/S,R-[Al(III)(LH(2)N(3)S)(THF)] (2a) and [(R,R/S,S-[Al(III)(LH(2)N(3)S)(THF)] (2b), which are diastereomers of each other. These complexes have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray structure analysis shows that the Al(III) ion is bound in an almost idealized square pyramidal geometry in 2a, while being held in a more distorted square pyramidal geometry in 2b. The major difference between 2a and 2b arises in the orientation of the terminal methyl groups of the ligand backbone in relation to the Al(III)N(3)S plane. These two complexes are crystallized at different temperatures (room temperature vs -35 °C), allowing for their separate isolation. Structural analysis shows that these complexes are reduced by the formal addition of one hydride ion to each imino group, resulting in a deprotonated bis(amido)pyridyl-thiolate ligand. A detailed analysis of metrical parameters rules out the possibility of pure one- or two-electron reduction of the π-conjugated bis(imino)pyridine framework. (1)H NMR spectra reveal a rich pattern in solution indicating that the solution state structures for 2a and 2b match those observed in the solid-state crystal structures, and reveal that both complexes are severely conformationally restricted. Direct organic synthetic methods failed to produce the reduced bis(amino)pyridyl-thiol ligand in pure form, but during the course of these efforts an unusual unsymmetrical aminopyridyl ketone, 1-(6-(1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylamino)ethyl)pyridin-2-yl)ethanone was synthesized in good yield and can be used as a possible precursor for further ligand development.
