Exploring the impacts of learning modality changes: Validation of the learning modality change community of inquiry and self-efficacy scales.

ABSTRACT: The rapid learning environment transition initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic impacted students' perception of, comfort with, and self-efficacy in the online learning environment. Garrison's Community of Inquiry framework provides a lens for examining students' online learning experiences through three interdependent elements: social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence. Researchers in this study developed and validated the Learning Modality Change Community of Inquiry and Self-Efficacy scales to measure health professions students' self-efficacy with online learning, while exploring how cognitive, social, and teaching presence is experienced by students who transition from one learning environment to another. The two scales demonstrate strong validity and reliability evidence and can be used by educators to explore the impacts of learning modality changes on student learning experiences. As learning environments continue to evolve, understanding the impact of these transitions can inform how educators consider curriculum design and learning environment changes.

Project description:The rocky intertidal zone is a highly dynamic and thermally variable ecosystem, where the combined influences of solar radiation, air temperature and topography can lead to differences greater than 15°C over the scale of centimetres during aerial exposure at low tide. For most intertidal organisms this small-scale heterogeneity in microclimates can have enormous influences on survival and physiological performance. However, the potential ecological importance of environmental heterogeneity in determining ecological responses to climate change remains poorly understood. We present a novel framework for generating spatially explicit models of microclimate heterogeneity and patterns of thermal physiology among interacting organisms. We used drone photogrammetry to create a topographic map (digital elevation model) at a resolution of 2 × 2 cm from an intertidal site in Massachusetts, which was then fed into to a model of incident solar radiation based on sky view factor and solar position. These data were in turn used to drive a heat budget model that estimated hourly surface temperatures over the course of a year (2017). Body temperature layers were then converted to thermal performance layers for organisms, using thermal performance curves, creating 'physiological landscapes' that display spatially and temporally explicit patterns of 'microrefugia'. Our framework shows how non-linear interactions between these layers lead to predictions about organismal performance and survivorship that are distinct from those made using any individual layer (e.g. topography, temperature) alone. We propose a new metric for quantifying the 'thermal roughness' of a site (RqT, the root mean square of spatial deviations in temperature), which can be used to quantify spatial and temporal variability in temperature and performance at the site level. These methods facilitate an exploration of the role of micro-topographic variability in driving organismal vulnerability to environmental change using both spatially explicit and frequency-based approaches.

Project description:Self-generation of knowledge can activate deeper cognitive processing and improve long-term retention compared to the passive reception of information. It plays a distinctive role within the concept of inquiry-based learning, which is an activity-oriented, student-centered collaborative learning approach in which students become actively involved in knowledge construction by following an idealized hypothetico-deductive method. This approach allows students to not only acquire content knowledge, but also an understanding of investigative procedures/inquiry skills - in particular the control-of-variables strategy (CVS). From the perspective of cognitive load theory, generating answers and solutions during inquiry-based learning is inefficient as it imposes an intrinsic and extraneous load on learners. Previous research on self-generation of content knowledge in inquiry-based learning has demonstrated that (1) a high cognitive load impairs retention of the generated information, (2) feedback is a fundamental requirement for self-generation of complex content knowledge, (3) self-generation success is key to long-term retention, and (4) generating and rereading place different demands on learners. However, there is still no research on the self-generation of scientific reasoning skills (procedural knowledge) and no knowledge of interaction between the (long-term) retention of these skills with prior knowledge, feedback and self-generation success. That is why this experiment was conducted. The focus of this research is to analyze the distinctive role of self-generation of scientific reasoning skills within the concept of inquiry-based learning and to identify the influence of prior knowledge and self-generation success on short-term and long-term retention. For this purpose, an experiment involving 133 6th and 7th graders was conducted. An inquiry activity that included the self-generation of scientific reasoning skills was compared to an inquiry task that had students simply read information about the experimental design. We used both an immediate and a delayed test to examine which treatment better developed a deeper understanding of CVS and an ability to apply this knowledge to novel problems (transfer). Direct instruction was clearly superior to self-generation in facilitating students' acquisition of CVS immediately after the inquiry task. However, after a period of 1 week had elapsed, both treatment conditions turned out to be equally effective. A generation effect was only found among students with high self-generation success after a 1-week delay.

Project description:BackgroundFor medical diagnosis, clinicians typically begin with a patient's chief concerns, followed by questions about symptoms and medical history, physical examinations, and requests for necessary auxiliary examinations to gather comprehensive medical information. This complex medical investigation process has yet to be modeled by existing artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to develop an AI-driven medical inquiry assistant for clinical diagnosis that provides inquiry recommendations by simulating clinicians' medical investigating logic via reinforcement learning.MethodsWe compiled multicenter, deidentified outpatient electronic health records from 76 hospitals in Shenzhen, China, spanning the period from July to November 2021. These records consisted of both unstructured textual information and structured laboratory test results. We first performed feature extraction and standardization using natural language processing techniques and then used a reinforcement learning actor-critic framework to explore the rational and effective inquiry logic. To align the inquiry process with actual clinical practice, we segmented the inquiry into 4 stages: inquiring about symptoms and medical history, conducting physical examinations, requesting auxiliary examinations, and terminating the inquiry with a diagnosis. External validation was conducted to validate the inquiry logic of the AI model.ResultsThis study focused on 2 retrospective inquiry-and-diagnosis tasks in the emergency and pediatrics departments. The emergency departments provided records of 339,020 consultations including mainly children (median age 5.2, IQR 2.6-26.1 years) with various types of upper respiratory tract infections (250,638/339,020, 73.93%). The pediatrics department provided records of 561,659 consultations, mainly of children (median age 3.8, IQR 2.0-5.7 years) with various types of upper respiratory tract infections (498,408/561,659, 88.73%). When conducting its own inquiries in both scenarios, the AI model demonstrated high diagnostic performance, with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.955 (95% CI 0.953-0.956) and 0.943 (95% CI 0.941-0.944), respectively. When the AI model was used in a simulated collaboration with physicians, it notably reduced the average number of physicians' inquiries to 46% (6.037/13.26; 95% CI 6.009-6.064) and 43% (6.245/14.364; 95% CI 6.225-6.269) while achieving areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.972 (95% CI 0.970-0.973) and 0.968 (95% CI 0.967-0.969) in the scenarios. External validation revealed a normalized Kendall τ distance of 0.323 (95% CI 0.301-0.346), indicating the inquiry consistency of the AI model with physicians.ConclusionsThis retrospective analysis of predominantly respiratory pediatric presentations in emergency and pediatrics departments demonstrated that an AI-driven diagnostic assistant had high diagnostic performance both in stand-alone use and in simulated collaboration with clinicians. Its investigation process was found to be consistent with the clinicians' medical investigation logic. These findings highlight the diagnostic assistant's promise in assisting the decision-making processes of health care professionals.
