Multi-device trust transfer: Can trust be transferred among multiple devices?

ABSTRACT: Recent advances in automation technology have increased the opportunity for collaboration between humans and multiple autonomous systems such as robots and self-driving cars. In research on autonomous system collaboration, the trust users have in autonomous systems is an important topic. Previous research suggests that the trust built by observing a task can be transferred to other tasks. However, such research did not focus on trust in multiple different devices but in one device or several of the same devices. Thus, we do not know how trust changes in an environment involving the operation of multiple different devices such as a construction site. We investigated whether trust can be transferred among multiple different devices, and investigated the effect of two factors: the similarity among multiple devices and the agency attributed to each device, on trust transfer among multiple devices. We found that the trust a user has in a device can be transferred to other devices and that attributing different agencies to each device can clarify the distinction among devices, preventing trust from transferring.

Project description:BackgroundThe Pipeline for Uncoilable or Failed Aneurysms (PUFS) trial primarily demonstrated the safety and efficacy of the implantation of multiple pipeline embolization devices (multi-PEDs) for large/giant intracranial aneurysms. However, no study has focused on when, why, or how to apply multi-PEDs.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to investigate the indications and strategies of using multi-PEDs for complex intracranial aneurysms.MethodsPatients who had been treated with two or more PEDs were included in the post-market multicenter registry study from 2014 to 2019, across 14 centers in China. Indications, strategies, perioperative safety, and clinical outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. The modified Rankin scale (mRS) score was used to evaluate clinical outcomes comprehensively, and the O'Kelly-Marotta (OKM) grading scale was used to evaluate aneurysm healing results.ResultsA total of 55 intracranial aneurysms were treated with multi-PEDs. There were 20 fusiform aneurysms with a large range, 25 large/giant saccular aneurysms, six aneurysms with failed treatment, and four aneurysms with greatly varied diameters of the parent artery. The strategies included telescope techniques in 40 patients and overlap techniques in 15 patients. In total, 120 stents were deployed in 55 patients. The operation styles included 25 patients (55.6%) with two PEDs, 21 patients (38.2%) with two PEDs combined with coiling, four patients (7.3%) with three PEDs, four patients (7.3%) with three PEDs combined with coiling, and one patient (1.8%) with four PEDs. Angiography revealed OKM D in two, OKM C in seven, and OKM A and B in 46 cases after surgery. During the perioperative period, eight patients developed neurological dysfunction, three of whom died. A total of thirty-four patients were followed up with digital subtraction angiography for 2-45 (8.2 ± 8.0) months. Angiography revealed OKM D in 26, OKM C in five, and OKM B in three. At the last follow-up, the mRS score was 0-1 in 52 patients.ConclusionThe treatment of anterior circulation aneurysms with multi-PEDs is safe and effective. The implantation of multi-PEDs could be considered for large-scale fusiform aneurysms, large/giant saccular aneurysms with a jet-sign, salvage of failed PED treatments, and in cases where the diameter of the parent artery varies greatly.

Project description:The contraceptive effectiveness of intrauterine devices has been attributed in part to effects of a foreign body reaction on the endometrium. We performed this study to identify compare the effects on the endometrial transcriptome of intrauterine devices and combined oral contraceptives, to better understand their mechanisms of action. We collected endometrial and cervical biopsies from women using the levonorgestrel-intrauterine device, copper intrauterine device or levonorgestrel-containing combined oral contraceptives, and from women not using contraceptives (control group). Transcriptional profiling was performed with Affymetrix arrays, Principal Component Analysis and the bioconductor package limma. Pathway analysis was performed using EnrichR and Reactome 2016. In endometrial samples from copper intrauterine device users (n=13), there were no genes with statistically significant differential expression compared to controls (n=11), whereas in levonorgestrel-intrauterine device users (n=11), 2509 genes were significantly dysregulated and mapped onto several immune and inflammatory pathways. In combined oral contraceptive users (n=12), 133 genes were significantly dysregulated and mapped predominantly onto pathways involving regulation of metal ions. Both levonorgestrel-intrauterine device and combined oral contraceptive use were associated with significant downregulation of members of the metallothionein gene family. In cervical samples, none of the groups showed statistically significant differential gene expression compared to controls. In conclusion, hormonal and copper intrauterine devices differ significantly in their effects on the endometrial transcriptome, with endometrium from copper intrauterine device users being indistinguishable from luteal phase endometrium. These results suggest that the contraceptive mechanisms of intrauterine devices are unlikely to rely on a common pathway involving a foreign body reaction in the endometrium.
