Ignorance is not bliss: evolutionary naivete in an endangered desert fish and implications for conservation.

ABSTRACT: Predator naiveté has been invoked to explain the impacts of non-native predators on isolated populations that evolved with limited predation. Such impacts have been repeatedly observed for the endangered Pahrump poolfish, Empetrichthys latos, a desert fish species that evolved in isolation since the end of the Pleistocene. We tested Pahrump poolfish anti-predator responses to conspecific chemical alarm cues released from damaged epidermal tissue in terms of fish activity and water column position. Pahrump poolfish behavioural responses to conspecific alarm cues did not differ from responses to a dechlorinated tap water control. As a positive control, the well-studied fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, showed significant alarm cue responses in terms of reduced activity and lowered water column position. The density of epidermal club cells, the presumptive source of alarm cues, was significantly lower in Pahrump poolfish relative to fathead minnows. Therefore, anti-predator competence mediated by conspecific alarm cues does not seem to be a component of the ecology of Pahrump poolfish. These findings provide a proximate mechanism for the vulnerability of Pahrump poolfish to non-native predators, with implications for the conservation and management of insular species.

Project description:Background/objectivesBody weight is negatively associated with adolescent Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Despite this well-established relationship, some adolescents with obesity do not display the expected HRQoL decreases. This study hypothesised weight perception as a moderator of the association between weight status and adolescent HRQoL.Subjects/methodsSubjects were secondary school students from an obesity prevention project in the Barwon South-West region of Victoria, Australia, entitled It's Your Move (N=3040). Measures included standardised body mass index (BMI-z; World Health Organization growth standards), weight perception and HRQoL, measured by the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Linear regression and average marginal effect analyses were conducted on cross-sectional baseline data to determine the significance of any interaction between weight perception and measured weight status in shaping adolescent HRQoL.ResultsThe BMI-z/perceived weight status interaction was significantly associated with adolescent HRQoL outcomes. Adolescents with BMI z-scores in the overweight/obesity range who perceived themselves as overweight had lower HRQoL than those who perceived themselves as 'about right.' Conversely, adolescents with BMI scores in the lower end of the normal range or in the thinness range who perceived themselves as underweight had lower HRQoL than those with 'about right' perceptions.ConclusionsThis was the first study to report third-variable impacts of a body-perception variable on the relationship between adolescent weight status and HRQoL. Adolescents' weight perceptions significantly moderated the relationship between overweight/obesity and reduced HRQoL. Adolescents who were outside the normal weight range and misperceived their objectively measured weight status enjoyed a higher HRQoL than adolescents whose weight perception was concordant with their actual weight status. These findings suggest that practitioners may need to exercise caution when educating adolescents about their weight status, as such 'reality checks' may negatively impact on adolescent HRQoL. It is suggested that more research be conducted to examine this potential effect.

Project description:The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is an endangered North American mustelid. This species is bred in managed care with the goal of reestablishing wild populations. However, individual ferrets in the conservation breeding programme have variable reproductive success. We monitored faecal steroid hormone metabolite profiles of 22 black-footed ferrets across two breeding seasons to examine whether endocrine factors were associated with successful reproduction. Among successfully whelping females, faecal progesterone metabolite concentrations were higher (P = 0.04) and faecal cortisol metabolite (FCM) concentrations were marginally higher (P = 0.07) in the late luteal phase compared to females who did not whelp (likely pseudopregnant). Effect sizes suggested that, in successfully whelping females, faecal oestradiol metabolite levels were higher in the follicular phase and FCM levels lower in the early luteal phase, but with high variation and lack of statistical significance. We speculate that this variation may be because male causes of reproductive failure account for some of these cases of pseudopregnancy. Among males, individuals that failed to successfully copulate had lower faecal testosterone metabolite concentrations than successful sires (P = 0.01). However, males who copulated but failed to sire a litter did not differ from successful sires in testosterone metabolite concentrations. Comparisons of sperm morphology between successful and unsuccessful sires were statistically underpowered, hence poor sperm quality could not be ruled out as a possible cause of these post-copulatory reproductive failures. Our data suggest that individuals who fail to reproduce in managed care are not experiencing chronic stress, based on FCM levels, although changes in females during the early luteal phase warrant further investigation. While male post-copulatory reproductive failure was not associated with deficiencies in sex hormone production, males that fail to copulate could potentially be targeted for testosterone supplementation.
