Project description:Friction factor is an important element in both flow simulations and river engineering. In hydraulics, studies on the friction factor in turbulent regions have been based on the concept of three flow regimes, namely, the fully smooth regime, the fully rough regime, and the transitional regime, since the establishment of the Nikuradze's chart. However, this study further demonstrates that combining the friction factor with Reynolds number yields a united formula that can scale the entire turbulent region. This formula is derived by investigating the correlation between friction in turbulent pipe flow and its influencing factors, i.e., Reynolds number and relative roughness. In the present study, the formulae of Blasius and Stricklerare modified to rearrange the implicit model of Tao. In addition, we derive a united explicit formula that can compute the friction factor in the entire turbulent regimes based on the asymptotic behavior of the improved Tao's model. Compared with the reported formulae of Nikuradze, the present formula exhibits higher computational accuracy for the original pipe experiment data of Nikuradze.

Project description:A comparative experimental and numerical study is conducted to establish the significance of the use of single-component over multi-component representatives of biodiesel, diesel and their blend for predicting spray tip penetration. Methyl oleate and methyl laurate are used as single-component representative fuels for biodiesel. The pure components n-heptane, n-dodecane and n-tetradecane are used as single-component representative fuels for diesel. Methyl laurate is found to represent biodiesel of coconut, whereas methyl oleate is found to represent biodiesel having high percentage of long-chain fatty acid esters. The spray tip penetration of methyl oleate is found to be in good agreement with the measured spray tip penetration of karanja biodiesel. The spray tip penetration prediction of n-heptane fuel is closely following diesel spray tip penetration along with that of n-tetradecane and n-dodecane. The study suggests that the knowledge of the single-component representatives of biodiesel, diesel and their blend is sufficient to predict the spray tip penetration of the corresponding biodiesel, diesel and their blend under non-evaporating environment.

Project description:Water hammer (WH) is a phenomenon characterized by the rapid opening or closing of valves or pumps in pipelines, resulting in a disruptive noise, intense vibrations, and potential damage to pipes, fittings, structures, and even human safety. While WH arresters are commonly employed to mitigate this issue in smaller plumbing systems, alternative solutions are required for larger applications like power plants. Researchers have proposed the utilization of pipe materials with a low modulus of elasticity in areas prone to WH events, as these materials possess the capability to absorb a significant portion of the resulting vibrations. This study focuses on investigating the influence of pressure and strain induced by the WH phenomenon. Experimental data collected from measurements using a specially designed test rig, as well as numerical and dimensionless analyses applied to the same rig, are employed to examine this effect. The experimental and numerical investigations encompass a range of flow rates and pressures. Five pipe materials, namely Galvanized steel, Copper, uPVC, PPr, and GRP, were selected for evaluation. The results indicate a deviation between the numerical and experimental results of WH frequency which can be explained from the pipeline rigidity. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis was performed to analyze the frequency components of the pressure transients resulting from water hammer events in the different pipe materials. The results indicate that pipe materials with lower elastic modulus, such as PPr and uPVC, exhibit reduced WH effects compared to materials with higher elastic modulus, such as steel. This research highlights the importance of selecting appropriate pipe materials for pressure pipelines in order to mitigate the dangers associated with WH. The results of the FFT analysis revealed distinct frequency responses for each material, illustrating how their unique viscoelastic properties affect the transient behavior.

Project description:The formation of soot in a swirling flow is investigated experimentally and numerically in the context of biogas combustion using a CO2-diluted methane/oxygen flame. Visualization of the swirling flow field and characterization of the burner geometry is obtained through PIV measurements. The soot particle size distributions under different fuel concentrations and swirling conditions are measured, revealing an overall reduction of soot concentration and smaller particle sizes with increasing swirling intensities and leaner flames. An axisymmetric two-dimensional CFD model, including a detailed combustion reaction mechanism and soot formation submodel, was implemented using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code (Ansys Fluent). The results are compared with the experiments, with similar trends observed for the soot size distribution under fuel-lean conditions. However, the model is not accurate enough to capture soot formation in fuel-rich combustion cases. In general, soot particle sizes from the model are much smaller than those observed in the experiments, with possible reasons being the inappropriate modeling in Fluent of governing mechanisms for soot agglomeration, growth, and oxidation for CH4-CO2 mixtures.

Project description:The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of many fluids, are the cornerstones of many physical and engineering sciences. However, it is still unclear whether they are mathematically well posed, that is, whether their solutions remain regular over time or develop singularities. Even though it was shown that singularities, if exist, could only be rare events, they may induce additional energy dissipation by inertial means. Here, using measurements at the dissipative scale of an axisymmetric turbulent flow, we report estimates of such inertial energy dissipation and identify local events of extreme values. We characterize the topology of these extreme events and identify several main types. Most of them appear as fronts separating regions of distinct velocities, whereas events corresponding to focusing spirals, jets and cusps are also found. Our results highlight the non-triviality of turbulent flows at sub-Kolmogorov scales as possible footprints of singularities of the Navier-Stokes equation.

Project description:In this paper, an efficient ghost-cell based immersed boundary method is applied to perform direct numerical simulation (DNS) of mass transfer problems in particle clusters. To be specific, a nine-sphere cuboid cluster and a random-generated spherical cluster consisting of 100 spheres are studied. In both cases, the cluster is composed of active catalysts and inert particles, and the mutual influence of particles on their mass transfer performance is studied. To simulate active catalysts the Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed at the external surface of spheres, while the zero-flux Neumann boundary condition is applied for inert particles. Through our studies, clustering is found to have negative influence on the mass transfer performance, which can be then improved by dilution with inert particles and higher Reynolds numbers. The distribution of active/inert particles may lead to large variations of the cluster mass transfer performance, and individual particle deep inside the cluster may possess a high Sherwood number.

Project description:Harvesting of flow current through implanted hydrophobic surface within silicone pipe as liquid nanogenerators where Tap water (TW), and DI water (DIw) as liquid reservoirs to successfully convert induced mechanical energy into electrical energy. Here, we used a commercial PTFE film for the generation of a hydrophobic surface as a source of mechanical energy. The surface roughness of the hydrophobic surface is confirmed using atomic force microscopy, and contact angle analyses. The generation of power through the interaction of TW and DI with inbuilt PTFE in silicone tube is described. The higher output voltage (Voc), and short circuit currents (Isc) were attained through an interaction of TW and DIw with N-PTFE. The lower Voc, and Isc's were produced when DI water interacts with N-PTFE electrode, whereas TW produced higher Voc and Isc's, respectively, due to a lack of free mobile ions in DIw than TW. The TW-Sh-TENG and DIw-Sh-TENG are produced the maximum peak-to-peak Voc, and Isc of 29.5 V and 17.4 V and 3.7 μA, and 2.9 μA, respectively. Significant power output enhancement of ~ 300% from TW-Sh-TENG from DIw-N-TENG due to the formation of higher surface roughness and lead to the slipping of water droplets by super-hydrophobicity.

Project description:Colored imaging of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) is a promising noninvasive method for medical applications such as therapy and diagnosis. This study investigates the capability of the magnetoelectric sensor and projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithm for colored particle detection. In the first step, the required circumstances for image reconstruction are studied via a simulation approach for different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The spatial accuracy of the reconstructed image is evaluated based on the correlation coefficient (CC) factor. The inverse problem is solved using the PGD method, which is adapted according to a nonnegativity constraint in the complex domain. The MNP characterizations are assessed through a magnetic particle spectrometer (MPS) for different types. In the experimental investigation, the real and imaginary parts of the MNP's response are used to detect the spatial distribution and particle type, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the average phase difference for CT100 and ARA100 particles is 14 degrees, which is consistent with the MPS results and could satisfy the system requirements for colored imaging. The experimental evaluation showed that the magnetoelectric sensor and the proposed approach could be potential candidates for color bio-imaging applications.

Project description:The aluminum-basalt fiber composite coating was prepared for the first time with basalt fiber as the spraying material by cold-spraying technology. Hybrid deposition behavior was studied by numerical simulation based on Fluent and ABAQUS. The microstructure of the composite coating was observed on the as-sprayed, cross-sectional, and fracture surfaces by SEM, focusing on the deposited morphology of the reinforcing phase basalt fibers in the coating, the distribution of basalt fibers, and the interaction between basalt fibers and metallic aluminum. The results show that there are four main morphologies of the basalt fiber-reinforced phase, i.e., transverse cracking, brittle fracture, deformation, and bending in the coating. At the same time, there are two modes of contact between aluminum and basalt fibers. Firstly, the thermally softened aluminum envelops the basalt fibers, forming a seamless connection. Secondly, the aluminum that has not undergone the softening effect creates a closed space, with the basalt fibers securely trapped within it. Moreover, the Rockwell hardness test and the friction-wear test were conducted on Al-basalt fiber composite coating, and the results showed that the composite coating has high wear resistance and high hardness.

Project description:Simulation of the material failure under high strain rate conditions is one of the most difficult problems in the finite element analyses, and many researchers have tried to understand and reproduce dynamic material fracture. In this study, we investigate a failure criterion that minimizes the mesh dependency at high strain rates and incorporates the criterion into the Johnson-Cook constitutive relationship by developing a user-defined material model. Impact tests were performed using a gas-gun system in order to investigate the response of the 7075-T651 aluminum plate in high-speed collision. On the other hand, numerical simulations are carried out by considering various element sizes and the relationship between element size and failure strain is inversely obtained using numerical results. By accommodating the relationship into the damage model and implementing in the user-defined material model, mesh dependency is significantly reduced, and sufficient accuracy is achieved with alleviated computational cost than the existing damage model. This study suggests an element size-dependent damage criterion that is applicable for impact simulation and it is expected that the criterion is useful to obtain accurate impact responses with a small computational cost.
