Are Health Literacy and Physical Literacy Independent Concepts? A Gender-Stratified Analysis in Medical School Students from Croatia.

ABSTRACT: Health literacy (HL) and physical literacy (PL) are concepts responsible for achieving and maintaining positive health behaviors. This study aimed to investigate gender-specific associations: (i) between PL and HL; and (ii) among HL, PL, and body composition. We observed 253 students attending health-area high schools from southern Croatia (181 girls; 16.9 ± 1.4 years). HL was assessed by the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire, PL by the PLAYself questionnaire, and body composition by bioimpedance analysis. The t-test was used to assess the differences between genders, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to establish the associations between variables. The results showed a similar level of HL (t-test = 0.2; p = 0.83) and PL (t-test = 0.01; p = 0.99) in boys and girls. Significant but small correlations were identified between HL and PL only in the girls (<10% of common variance). The body composition indices were significantly correlated with PL only in the boys (15−20% of common variance). Our research highlights the necessity of the independent evaluation of HL and PL in adolescence. Further studies evaluating other indices of health status in relation to PL and HL are warranted.

Project description:BackgroundDespite changes in social attitudes in the United States over the last decade, sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals continue to face significant health disparities, driven partly by disproportionately higher rates of self-reported discrimination and harassment when seeking healthcare. Historically, physicians have received little to no required training on how to provide sensitive, competent care to SGM patients, and continue to demonstrate poor competency with SGM topics despite calls for increased education and published guidelines to promote competency. The present study aimed to investigate competency with SGM topics among both faculty and medical students at one institution.MethodsThe authors distributed an anonymous online survey (2020-2021) to medical students and student-facing faculty at one allopathic medical school in the United States. The objective of the study was to evaluate knowledge, clinical skills, and self-reported competence with SGM topics.ResultsOf survey respondents, 223 medical students and 111 faculty were included in final analysis. On average, medical students were significantly more likely to answer General Knowledge questions correctly (97.2%) compared to faculty (89.9%). There were no significant differences in responses to Clinical Knowledge questions between medical students and faculty. however medical students were significantly more likely to report competence with eliciting a thorough sexual history, and faculty were significantly more likely to report receiving adequate clinical training and supervision to work with lesbian, gay, and bisexual patients.ConclusionsMedical students demonstrated significantly higher general knowledge about SGM topics compared to faculty. Medical students and faculty demonstrated similarly low average clinical knowledge, with percent correct 65.6% for students and 62.7% for faculty. Despite significant differences in general knowledge and low clinical knowledge, medical students and faculty self-reported similar levels of competence with these topics. This indicates insufficient curricular preparation to achieve the AAMC competencies necessary to care for SGM patients.

Project description:In recent years, the internalisation of education in China has led to an increase in the prevalence of a highly competitive, test-focused approach to learning. This has had a detrimental impact on the physical health and wellbeing of children and adolescents in China, resulting in a concerning lack of physical literacy among junior high school students. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to construct an evaluation index system for physical literacy in junior high school students with Chinese characteristics, quantify the relative importance of each domain, and provide a framework for students to assess and self-evaluate the sustainable development of their physical literacy. The indicator system was modelled on CAPL-2, and valid indicators were extracted from the literature. A pre-selected indicator system for physical literacy in junior high school students was constructed through three rounds of Delphi expert questionnaire surveys (48 questionnaires were distributed in total). A total of 16 experts participated in all three rounds of the surveys until a consensus was reached on the indicators, resulting in the establishment of a hierarchical analysis-based theoretical model. This was developed using the experts' opinions and determined the items to be subdomains and weights. The AHP was employed to ascertain the relative importance of the subdomains and items within the assessment system. The index weight scores of the Chinese junior high school students' physical literacy assessment index system are aligned with the core tenet of the physical literacy concept, comprising four primary indicators, eight secondary indicators, and 26 tertiary indicators. The weights of the physical literacy evaluation indexes for junior high school students in China were calculated using the AHP to establish a progressive hierarchical model and the consistency test. The primary indicators were found to be in the following order of importance: Physical Competence (29.82%) > Motivation and Confidence (29.64%) > Knowledge and Understanding (20.27%) = Daily Behavior (20.27%). The system is an effective means of evaluating the impact of physical activity and health promotion among junior high school students, and it effectively addresses the needs of this age group in these areas. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the effects of physical activity and health promotion among junior high school students, and it offers a scientific foundation for the development of precise and individualized physical activity and health promotion programs.
