Co-Effects of Hydrological Conditions and Industrial Activities on the Distribution of Heavy Metal Pollution in Taipu River, China.

ABSTRACT: In Taipu River, after being transformed from a drainage channel to a drinking water supply river in 1995, heavy metals that have accumulated in sediments have become an environmental issue. Herein, we collected sediments of Taipu River in 2018, 2020, and 2021 and analyzed the distribution of Sb, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Zn to identify their sources. The results revealed that the mean concentrations of heavy metals were above the background values, except for Cr and As. During the non-flood season, the midstream of Taipu River becomes a heavy metal hotspot, with their concentrations 2-5 times higher than those in upstream sediment. There were significant correlations (r = 0.79-0.99) among drainage, precipitation and flow rate, which indicated that drainage caused by both the opening of Taipu Gate and precipitation control the flow rate and, then, possibly influenced the distribution of heavy metals. Moreover, three sources (industrial sources, particle deposition sources, and natural sources) were characterized as the determinants for the accumulation of heavy metal by the Positive Matrix Factorization model, with the contribution rates of 41.7%, 32.9%, and 25.4%, respectively. It is recommended that the influence of hydrological conditions and industrial activities should be a key consideration when developing regulations for the management of heavy metals in rivers.

Project description:The Yihe River is the largest mountain torrent river in Shandong Province, which plays an important role in flood control, irrigation and climate regulation. Due to the impacts of the upstream and urban domestic sewage, as well as industrial and agricultural wastewater, the Linyi City section of the Yihe River is expected to have a high risk of metal pollution. Sediments are the main reservoir and potential release source of metals (metalloid) in river systems. Assessment of metals in sediments can identify anthropogenic pollution. In this study, 25 sediment samples were collected from the Linyi City section of the Yihe River and its tributaries, and the concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the concentration of Hg was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). The pollution levels were evaluated by determining the contamination factor, pollution load index, geoaccumulation index, potential ecological risk assessment and toxicity risk index. Correlation analysis and absolute principal component-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) were used to conduct source apportionment. Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, As, and Hg were detected in all sediment samples. Overall, the concentration of metals (metalloid) in the sediments of the main stream of the Yihe River is mostly within the environmental background value, and the overall state is from no pollution to slightly polluted, while the tributaries of the Yihe River are in a slightly polluted state. Hg and Cd are the two main metal pollutants in the surface sediments of the study area, with the average content of 1.65 and 1.11 times the background value, respectively. Most areas of the main stream of the Yihe River are free of metal pollution, with low ecological risk and no toxicity risk. The ecological risks in the tributaries (Suhe River, Benghe River, Liuqinghe River) and the river center island (Yihe River North Island) are high and assessed as presenting low toxicity. Source analysis showed that Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As mainly come from natural sources and agricultural activities, while Cd, Pb, and Hg are mainly the result of transportation and industry. The results help us understand the distribution and pollution of metals (metalloid) in the river sediments, and also provide management support to local environmental management departments and relevant national departments.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the contamination levels of six heavy metals, namely arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb), in the soil of the Henan Yellow River Wetland Reserve. It seeks to reveal the spatial distribution and trends of heavy metal pollution, providing a scientific basis for the rational utilization and effective protection of soil. Additionally, it aims to propose targeted management and remediation recommendations to mitigate or prevent soil pollution.MethodA total of 706 soil samples were collected in this area in combination with the land use type map. As and Hg were determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry, and Cr, Cu, Pb and Cd were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Taking the soil pollution risk screening value of agricultural land (GB15618-2018) as a reference value, the sample data were statistically analyzed, and the Nemerow comprehensive pollution index method combined with ArcGIS technology was used to evaluate the soil environmental quality.ResultThe comprehensive pollution index of the soil in the Yellow River Wetland Reserve was 0.42, ranging from 0.17 to 2.38, which was safe and not polluted (I grade). Out of 706 sampling locations, 674 remained uncontaminated, while 26 exhibited cleanliness. Although they were in the warning line, they did not exceed the standard, accounting for 3.68% of the total number of sampling points. Five sample points were slightly polluted, accounting for 0.71% of the total sample points, and one sample point was moderately polluted, accounting for 0.14% of the total sample points. It can be seen that there are few agricultural land pollution points in the Yellow River Wetland Reserve, and the soil environment quality is generally good.ConclusionThe soil in the Yellow River Wetland Reserve in Henan has a very small amount of mild and moderate pollution, and there is no severe pollution. The cleanliness is currently high.
