Innovation of Imine Metal Chelates as Corrosion Inhibitors at Different Media: A Collective Study.

ABSTRACT: The corrosion inhibition of transition metal chelates derived from Schiff base ligands was tested for (mild, copper, stainless, aluminum and carbon) steel in various concentrations of (HCl, HNO₃ and H₂SO₄) acidic medium at 25 °C through (weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential measurements (OCP)) techniques. The studied compounds were identified with various spectral, analytical and physico-chemical techniques. It was observed that the investigated compounds had a significant inhibitory impact on the corrosion of diverse steels in the medium investigated. The analysis shows that increasing the dose of the studied complexes improves the corresponding inhibitory efficiency values. Negative results of Gibb's free adsorption energy (ΔGads0) prove the suppression process's spontaneous and physical adsorption, which contradicts the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As a result of this insight, a novel bridge between nuclearity driven coordinated inorganic chemistry and materials, as well as corrosion control, has been built. This review provides an overview of the use of Schiff bases and associated transition metals as potential corrosion inhibitors, including the factors that influence their application.

Project description:The corrosion characteristics and passive behavior of as-cast Ni40Fe30Co20Al10 medium-entropy alloy (MEA) fabricated by the vacuum arc melting technique were investigated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl, 0.5 M HCl, and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions. Although the impact of different solutions on the corrosion current density was not pronounced, the corrosion potential values of MEAs in H2SO4, HCl and NaCl solutions were -0.37, -0.58 and -1.16 V, respectively, indicating that the resistance to general corrosion in acidic solutions becomes strengthened. Through electrochemical passive region tests, surface morphology analysis and ICP testing, it was found that, due to the high-entropy effect and uniform single-phase structure, an optimized and stable passive film formed specifically in the Cl--containing solution. The ion concentrations in the passive region of MEA in NaCl solution were an order of magnitude lower than those of other two samples, suggesting that its passive film formed exhibits a more prominent capacity to inhibit metal dissolution. Compared with electrochemical reactions in H2SO4 and HCl solutions, MEA shows enhanced pitting resistance in NaCl solution, which could be attributed to the presence of abundant unoxidized metal atoms (51.9 at.%). Al is identified as the primary component in the formation of the passive film, which plays a protective role for the Co-rich interior of the MEA. Although MEA has a relatively high passivation current in the H2SO4 solution, it has the widest passivation zone (1.87 V), indicating the optimized stability of the formed passive film. Moreover, it displays a high level of resistance to pitting corrosion in the solution containing only H+- and free of Cl-. Both the MEAs show significant grain-boundary corrosion in H2SO4 and HCl solutions. Among them, the MEA in HCl experiences more severe intragranular corrosion. Notably, MEA withstands the erosion of a single Cl-- or H+-containing solution, but it is unable to resist the synergistic effect of a solution containing both H+ and Cl-.

Project description:Corrosion inhibitors, including zinc orthophosphate, sodium orthophosphate, and sodium silicate, are commonly used to prevent the corrosion of drinking water infrastructure. Metals such as zinc are known stressors for antibiotic resistance selection, and phosphates can increase microbial growth in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). Yet, the influence of corrosion inhibitor type on antimicrobial resistance in DWDS is unknown. Here, we show that sodium silicates can decrease antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), while zinc orthophosphate increases ARB and ARGs in source water microbial communities. Based on controlled bench-scale studies, zinc orthophosphate addition significantly increased the abundance of ARB resistant to ciprofloxacin, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and vancomycin, as well as the genes sul1, qacEΔ1, an indication of resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds, and the integron-integrase gene intI1. In contrast, sodium silicate dosage at 10 mg/L resulted in decreased bacterial growth and antibiotic resistance selection compared to the other corrosion inhibitor additions. Source water collected from the drinking water treatment plant intake pipe resulted in less significant changes in ARB and ARG abundance due to corrosion inhibitor addition compared to source water collected from the pier at the recreational beach. In tandem with the antibiotic resistance shifts, significant microbial community composition changes also occurred. Overall, the corrosion inhibitor sodium silicate resulted in the least selection for antibiotic resistance, which suggests it is the preferred corrosion inhibitor option for minimizing antibiotic resistance proliferation in DWDS. However, the selection of an appropriate corrosion inhibitor must also be appropriate for the water chemistry of the system (e.g., pH, alkalinity) to minimize metal leaching first and foremost and to adhere to the lead and copper rule. IMPORTANCE Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health concern across the globe and was recently labeled the silent pandemic. Scientists aim to identify the source of antibiotic resistance and control points to mitigate the spread of antibiotic resistance. Drinking water is a direct exposure route to humans and contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria and associated resistance genes. Corrosion inhibitors are added to prevent metallic pipes in distribution systems from corroding, and the type of corrosion inhibitor selected could also have implications on antibiotic resistance. Indeed, we found that sodium silicate can minimize selection of antibiotic resistance while phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors can promote antibiotic resistance. These findings indicate that sodium silicate is a preferred corrosion inhibitor choice for mitigation of antibiotic resistance.
