Magic wavelength for a rovibrational transition in molecular hydrogen.

ABSTRACT: Molecular hydrogen, among other simple calculable atomic and molecular systems, possesses a huge advantage of having a set of ultralong living rovibrational states that make it well suited for studying fundamental physics. Further experimental progress will require trapping cold H₂ samples. However, due to the large energy of the first electronic excitation, the conventional approach to finding a magic wavelength does not work for H₂. We find a rovibrational transition for which the AC Stark shift is largely compensated by the interplay between the isotropic and anisotropic components of polarizability. The residual AC Stark shift can be completely eliminated by tuning the trapping laser to a specific "magic wavelength" at which the weak quadrupole polarizability cancels the residual dipole polarizability.

Long-lived entanglement of molecules in magic-wavelength optical tweezers.

Project description:Realizing quantum control and entanglement of particles is crucial for advancing both quantum technologies and fundamental science. Substantial developments in this domain have been achieved in a variety of systems1-5. In this context, ultracold polar molecules offer new and unique opportunities because of their more complex internal structure associated with vibration and rotation, coupled with the existence of long-range interactions6,7. However, the same properties make molecules highly sensitive to their environment8-10, affecting their coherence and utility in some applications. Here we show that by engineering an exceptionally controlled environment using rotationally magic11,12 optical tweezers, we can achieve long-lived entanglement between pairs of molecules using detectable hertz-scale interactions. We prepare two-molecule Bell states with fidelity 0.924-0.016+0.013 , limited by detectable leakage errors. When correcting for these errors, the fidelity is 0.976-0.016+0.014 . We show that the second-scale entanglement lifetimes are limited solely by these errors, providing opportunities for research in quantum-enhanced metrology7,13, ultracold chemistry14 and the use of rotational states in quantum simulation, quantum computation and as quantum memories. The extension of precise quantum control to complex molecular systems will enable their additional degrees of freedom to be exploited across many domains of quantum science15-17.

Magic in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers.

Project description:The long-wavelength moiré superlattices in twisted 2D structures have emerged as a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated electron physics. We study the moiré bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, focusing on WSe2, at small twist angles using a combination of first principles density functional theory, continuum modeling, and Hartree-Fock approximation. We reveal the rich physics at small twist angles θ < 4∘, and identify a particular magic angle at which the top valence moiré band achieves almost perfect flatness. In the vicinity of this magic angle, we predict the realization of a generalized Kane-Mele model with a topological flat band, interaction-driven Haldane insulator, and Mott insulators at the filling of one hole per moiré unit cell. The combination of flat dispersion and uniformity of Berry curvature near the magic angle holds promise for realizing fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect at fractional filling. We also identify twist angles favorable for quantum spin Hall insulators and interaction-induced quantum anomalous Hall insulators at other integer fillings.

Absorption wavelength along chromophore low-barrier hydrogen bonds.

Project description:In low-barrier hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), the pK a values for the H-bond donor and acceptor moieties are nearly equal, whereas the redox potential values depend on the H+ position. Spectroscopic details of low-barrier H-bonds remain unclear. Here, we report the absorption wavelength along low-barrier H-bonds in protein environments, using a quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach. Low-barrier H-bonds form between Glu46 and p-coumaric acid (pCA) in the intermediate pRCW state of photoactive yellow protein and between Asp116 and the retinal Schiff base in the intermediate M-state of the sodium-pumping rhodopsin KR2. The H+ displacement of only ∼0.4 Å, which does not easily occur without low-barrier H-bonds, is responsible for the ∼50 nm-shift in the absorption wavelength. This may be a basis of how photoreceptor proteins have evolved to proceed photocycles using abundant protons.

Pressure-induced hydrogen localization coupled to a semiconductor-insulator transition in a hydrogen-bonded molecular conductor.

Project description:Purely organic crystals, κ-X3(Cat-EDT-TTF)2 [X = H or D, Cat-EDT-TTF = catechol-fused tetrathiafulvalene], are a new type of molecular conductor with hydrogen dynamics. In this work, hydrostatic pressure effects on these materials were investigated in terms of the electrical resistivity and crystal structure. The results indicate that the pressure induces and promotes hydrogen (deuterium) localization in the hydrogen bond, in contrast to the case of the conventional hydrogen-bonded materials (where pressure prevents hydrogen localization), and consequently leads to a significant change in the electrical conducting properties (i.e., the occurrence of a semiconductor-insulator transition). Therefore, we have successfully found a new type of pressure-induced phase transition where the cooperation of the hydrogen dynamics and π-electron interactions plays a crucial role.

High-Level Rovibrational Calculations on Ketenimine.

Project description:From an astrochemical point of view ketenimine (CH2CNH) is a complex organic molecule (COM) and therefore likely to be a building block for biologically relevant molecules. Since it has been detected in the star-forming region Sagittarius B2(N), it is of high relevance in this field. Although experimental data are available for certain bands, for some energy ranges such as above 1200 cm-1 reliable data virtually do not exist. In addition, high-level ab initio calculations are neither reported for ketenimine nor for one of its deuterated isotopologues. In this paper, we provide for the first time data from accurate quantum chemical calculations and a thorough analysis of the full rovibrational spectrum. Based on high-level potential energy surfaces obtained from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations including up to 4-mode coupling terms, the (ro)vibrational spectrum of ketenimine has been studied in detail by variational calculations relying on rovibrational configuration interaction (RVCI) theory. Strong Fermi resonances were found for all isotopologues. Rovibrational infrared intensities have been obtained from dipole moment surfaces determined from the distinguishable cluster approximation. A comparison of the spectra of the CH2CNH molecule with experimental data validates our results, but also reveals new insight about the system, which shows very strong Coriolis coupling effects.

Nanobody: the "magic bullet" for molecular imaging?

Project description:Molecular imaging involves the non-invasive investigation of biological processes in vivo at the cellular and molecular level, which can play diverse roles in better understanding and treatment of various diseases. Recently, single domain antigen-binding fragments known as 'nanobodies' were bioengineered and tested for molecular imaging applications. Small molecular size (~15 kDa) and suitable configuration of the complementarity determining regions (CDRs) of nanobodies offer many desirable features suitable for imaging applications, such as rapid targeting and fast blood clearance, high solubility, high stability, easy cloning, modular nature, and the capability of binding to cavities and difficult-to-access antigens. Using nanobody-based probes, several imaging techniques such as radionuclide-based, optical and ultrasound have been employed for visualization of target expression in various disease models. This review summarizes the recent developments in the use of nanobody-based probes for molecular imaging applications. The preclinical data reported to date are quite promising, and it is expected that nanobody-based molecular imaging agents will play an important role in the diagnosis and management of various diseases.

Ab Initio Rovibrational Spectroscopy of the Acetylide Anion.

Project description:In this work the rovibrational spectrum of the acetylide anion HCC- is investigated using high-level electronic structure methods and variational rovibrational calculations. Using a composite approach the potential energy surface and dipole surface is constructed from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster accounting for corrections due to core-valence correlation, scalar relativistic effects and higher-order excitation effects. Previous approaches for approximating the latter are critically evaluated. Employing the composite potential, accurate spectroscopic parameters determined from variational calculations are presented. In comparison to the few available reference data the present results show excellent agreement with ground state rotational constants within 0.005% of the experimental value. Intensities determined from the variational calculations suggest the bending fundamental transition ν2 around 510 cm-1 to be the best target for detection. The rather weak CD stretching fundamental ν1 in deuterated isotopologues show a second-order resonance with the (0,20,1) state and the consequences are discussed in some detail. The spectroscopic parameters and band intensities provided for a number of vibrational bands in isotopologues of the acetylide anion should facilitate future spectroscopic investigations.

Plasmonic Nanowires for Wide Wavelength Range Molecular Sensing.

Project description:In this paper, we propose the use of a standing nanowires array, constituted by plasmonic active gold wires grown on iron disks, and partially immersed in a supporting alumina matrix, for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy applications. The galvanic process was used to fabricate nanowires in pores of anodized alumina template, making this device cost-effective. This fabrication method allows for the selection of size, diameter, and spatial arrangement of nanowires. The proposed device, thanks to a detailed design analysis, demonstrates a broadband plasmonic enhancement effect useful for many standard excitation wavelengths in the visible and NIR. The trigonal pores arrangement gives an efficiency weakly dependent on polarization. The devices, tested with 633 and 830 nm laser lines, show a significant Raman enhancement factor, up to around 6 × 10⁴, with respect to the flat gold surface, used as a reference for the measurements of the investigated molecules.
