Spin Hall effect of transversely spinning light.

ABSTRACT: Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light-a T-spin-induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin-induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Broadband spin Hall effect of light in single nanoapertures.

Project description:With properties not previously available, optical metamaterials and metasurfaces have shown their great potential in the precise control of light waves at the nanoscale. However, the use of current metamaterials and metasurfaces is limited by the collective response of the meta-atoms/molecules, which means that a single element cannot provide the functionalities required by most applications. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that a single achiral nanoaperture can be utilized as a meta-macromolecule to achieve giant angular spin Hall effect of light. By controlling the spin-related momenta, we show that these nanoapertures can enable full control of the phase gradient at a deep-subwavelength level, thus forming unique building blocks for optical metasurfaces. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a miniaturized Bessel-like beam generator and flat lens are designed and experimentally characterized. The results presented here may open a door for the development of meta-macromolecule-based metasurfaces for integrated optical systems and nanophotonics.

Experimental observation of spin Hall effect of light using compact weak measurements.

Project description:The spin Hall effect of light, a phenomenon characterized by the transverse and spin dependent splitting of light at an optical interface, is highly promising for collecting precise quantitative data from interfaces and stands as an appealing option for improving precision metrology. This high level of precision is attributed to the principles of weak measurement. Since its conceptual introduction, the spin Hall effect of light has been empirically observed through weak measurement techniques, adhering closely to the initially proposed experimental configuration. Recently, it has been suggested that the setup can be downsized without compromising precision. Here, the first experimental demonstration of "compact weak measurement" is achieved by observing the spin Hall effect of both reflected and refracted light. Compared to the conventional weak measurement, this compact setup performs the same measurements but requires less free space by replacing the two convex lenses with a set of concave and convex lenses. The compact weak measurement demonstrates excellent agreement with theoretical predictions and experimental findings from traditional setups across both isotropic-isotropic and isotropic-anisotropic interfaces. The experimental validation of the compact configuration paves the way for the practical application of the spin Hall effect of light in devices with a smaller form factor.

A compact weak measurement to observe the spin Hall effect of light.

Project description:The spin Hall effect of light (SHEL), a microscopic and transverse splitting of linearly polarized light into circularly polarized components during refraction and reflection, can be measured at subnanometer scales using weak measurements and has emerged as a powerful candidate for precision measurements. However, despite the strong demand for compact and miniaturized sensors and precision metrology, no efforts have downsized the weak measurements. Here I demonstrate that the location of the interface where the SHEL occurs does not impact the results of weak measurements and building on this observation, propose a modified setup called the compact weak measurement to reduce the form factor by replacing one convex lens with a concave one. The concept is theoretically validated and numerically confirmed across various setup parameters and interfaces. The compact weak measurement effectively reduces the required free space distance by twice the focal length and will facilitate the implementation of SHEL-based precision measurements in practical applications.

Nanophotonic-assisted precision enhancement of weak measurement using spin Hall effect of light.

Project description:The spin Hall effect of light, i.e., the microscopic and spin-dependent transverse splitting of linearly polarized light into circular polarizations at an optical interface, has been considered as a promising candidate for high-precision measurement when combined with a weak measurement technique. However, in those previous demonstrations, the precision is determined by the interface of interest, hindering its versatility. Here, by leveraging the direct correlation of precision with the spin Hall shift, we propose nanophotonic-assisted approaches to increase the precision of the weak measurement by controlling the spin Hall effect of light at the target interface. The refractive index sensing of an isotropic medium is demonstrated as a proof of concept, in which the precision can be increased, in principle, to infinity by placing an index-below-unity slab in the vicinity of the target interface. Furthermore, a single-layer metasurface comprising two-dimensional subwavelength patterns is introduced as an experimentally favorable platform. This study lays the foundation for nondestructive and high-precision investigation of unknown parameters of interfaces and will find wide sensing applications in material science, medical engineering, and other interdisciplinary fields.

Spin-Hall-effect-modulation skyrmion oscillator.

Project description:The electric-current-induced spin torque on local magnetization allows the electric control of magnetization, leading to numerous key concepts of spintronic devices. Utilizing the steady-state spin precession under spin-polarized current, a nanoscale spin-torque oscillator tunable over GHz range is one of those promising concepts. Albeit successful proof of principles to date, the spin-torque oscillators still suffer from issues regarding output power, linewidth and magnetic-field-free operation. Here we propose an entirely new concept of spin-torque oscillator, based on magnetic skyrmion dynamics subject to lateral modulation of the spin-Hall effect (SHE). In the oscillator, a skyrmion circulates around the modulation boundary between opposite SHE-torque regions, since the SHE pushes the skyrmion toward the modulation boundary in both regions. A micromagnetic simulation confirmed such oscillations with frequencies of up to 15 GHz in media composed of synthetic ferrimagnets. This fast and robust SHE-modulation-based skyrmion oscillator is expected to overcome the issues associated with conventional spin-torque oscillators.

Acoustic spin Hall effect in strong spin-orbit metals.

Project description:We report on the observation of the acoustic spin Hall effect that facilitates lattice motion-induced spin current via spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Under excitation of surface acoustic wave (SAW), we find that a spin current flows orthogonal to the SAW propagation in nonmagnetic metals (NMs). The acoustic spin Hall effect manifests itself in a field-dependent acoustic voltage in NM/ferromagnetic metal bilayers. The acoustic voltage takes a maximum when the NM layer thickness is close to its spin diffusion length, vanishes for NM layers with weak SOI, and increases linearly with the SAW frequency. To account for these results, we find that the spin current must scale with the SOI and the time derivative of the lattice displacement. These results, which imply the strong coupling of electron spins with rotating lattices via the SOI, show the potential of lattice dynamics to supply spin current in strong spin-orbit metals.

Ultrafast unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance driven by terahertz light field.

Project description:The ultrafast control of magnetisation states in magnetically ordered systems poses significant technological challenges yet is vital for the development of memory devices that operate at picosecond timescales or terahertz (THz) frequencies. Despite considerable efforts achieving convenient ultrafast readout of magnetic states remains an area of active investigation. For practical applications, energy-efficient and cost-effective electrical detection is highly desirable. In this context, unidirectional spin-Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) has been proposed as a straightforward two-terminal geometry for the electrical detection of magnetisation states in magnetic heterostructures. In this work, we demonstrate that USMR is effective at THz frequencies, enabling picosecond time readouts initiated by light fields. We observe ultrafast USMR in various ferromagnet/heavy metal thin film heterostructures via THz second-harmonic generation. Our findings, along with temperature-dependent measurements of USMR, reveal a substantial contribution from electron-magnon spin-flip scattering, highlighting the potential for all-electrical detection of THz magnon modes.

Flexible coherent control of plasmonic spin-Hall effect.

Project description:The surface plasmon polariton is an emerging candidate for miniaturizing optoelectronic circuits. Recent demonstrations of polarization-dependent splitting using metasurfaces, including focal-spot shifting and unidirectional propagation, allow us to exploit the spin degree of freedom in plasmonics. However, further progress has been hampered by the inability to generate more complicated and independent surface plasmon profiles for two incident spins, which work coherently together for more flexible and tunable functionalities. Here by matching the geometric phases of the nano-slots on silver to specific superimpositions of the inward and outward surface plasmon profiles for the two spins, arbitrary spin-dependent orbitals can be generated in a slot-free region. Furthermore, motion pictures with a series of picture frames can be assembled and played by varying the linear polarization angle of incident light. This spin-enabled control of orbitals is potentially useful for tip-free near-field scanning microscopy, holographic data storage, tunable plasmonic tweezers, and integrated optical components.

Gauge Physics of Spin Hall Effect.

Project description:Spin Hall effect (SHE) has been discussed in the context of Kubo formulation, geometric physics, spin orbit force, and numerous semi-classical treatments. It can be confusing if the different pictures have partial or overlapping claims of contribution to the SHE. In this article, we present a gauge-theoretic, time-momentum elucidation, which provides a general SHE equation of motion, that unifies under one theoretical framework, all contributions of SHE conductivity due to the kinetic, the spin orbit force (Yang-Mills), and the geometric (Murakami-Fujita) effects. Our work puts right an ambiguity surrounding previously partial treatments involving the Kubo, semiclassical, Berry curvatures, or the spin orbit force. Our full treatment shows the Rashba 2DEG SHE conductivity to be [formula in text] instead of [formula in text], and Rashba heavy hole [formula in text] instead of [formula in text]. This renewed treatment suggests a need to re-derive and re-calculate previously studied SHE conductivity.

Real-time observation of the spin Hall effect of light using metasurface-enabled single-shot weak measurements.

Project description:The spin Hall effect of light (SHEL), the transverse splitting of light into two circularly polarized components via refraction or reflection, offers high-precision, nondestructive inspection of unknown interfaces when combined with a signal amplification technique called weak measurement. However, its application in detecting dynamics is limited due to its multistep process. Here, we condense the procedure into a single step, enabling calibration-free, single-shot measurement of the SHEL by replacing one component of the conventional setup with a polarization beamsplitting metasurface. Our approach allows for instantaneous evaluation of the SHEL, even with fluctuations in the original beam position. As proof of concept, we apply metasurface-assisted weak measurements to both static and dynamic scenarios, where the experimental results obtained from a single captured image demonstrate nice agreement with theory. This real-time observation of the SHEL highlights its potential for high-precision monitoring of dynamic processes such as biomedical sensing and chemical analysis.
