The shape-dependent surface oxidation of 2D ultrathin Mo₂C crystals.

ABSTRACT: 2D atomic crystals have been widely explored, usually owing to their numerous shapes, of which the typical hexagon has drawn the most interest. However, the relationship between shape and properties has not been fully probed, owing to the lack of a proper system. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the shape-dependent surface oxidation of 2D Mo₂C crystals, where the elongated flakes are preferentially oxidized under ambient conditions when compared with regular ones, showing higher chemical activity. The gradual surface oxidation of elongated Mo₂C crystals as a function of time is clearly observable. Structural determinations reveal that a discrepancy in the arrangement of Mo and C atoms between elongated and regular crystals accounts for the selective oxidation behavior. The identification of the shape-dependent surface oxidization of Mo₂C crystals provides significant possibilities for tuning the properties of 2D materials via shape-control.

Controlled growth of 2D ultrathin Ga2O3 crystals on liquid metal.

Project description:2D metal oxides (2DMOs) have drawn intensive interest in the past few years owing to their rich surface chemistry and unique electronic structures. Striving for large-scale and high-quality novel 2DMOs is of great significance for developing future nano-enabled technologies. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time controllable growth of highly crystalline 2D ultrathin Ga2O3 single crystals on liquid Ga by the chemical vapor deposition approach. With the introduction of oxygen into the growth process, large-area hexagonal α-Ga2O3 crystals with a uniform size distribution have been produced. At high temperature, fast diffusion of oxygen atoms onto the liquid surface facilitates reaction with Ga and thus leads to in situ formation of 2D ultrathin crystals. By precisely controlling the amount of oxygen, the vertical growth of the Ga2O3 single crystal has been realized. Furthermore, phase engineering can be achieved and thus 2D β-Ga2O3 crystals were also prepared by precisely tuning the growth temperature. The controlled growth of 2D Ga2O3 crystals offers an applicable avenue for fabrication of other 2D metal oxides and can further open up possibilities for future electronics.

Phase-controllable growth of ultrathin 2D magnetic FeTe crystals.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) magnets with intrinsic ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic (FM/AFM) ordering are highly desirable for future spintronic devices. However, the direct growth of their crystals is in its infancy. Here we report a chemical vapor deposition approach to controllably grow layered tetragonal and non-layered hexagonal FeTe nanoplates with their thicknesses down to 3.6 and 2.8 nm, respectively. Moreover, transport measurements reveal these obtained FeTe nanoflakes show a thickness-dependent magnetic transition. Antiferromagnetic tetragonal FeTe with the Néel temperature (TN) gradually decreases from 70 to 45 K as the thickness declines from 32 to 5 nm. And ferromagnetic hexagonal FeTe is accompanied by a drop of the Curie temperature (TC) from 220 K (30 nm) to 170 K (4 nm). Theoretical calculations indicate that the ferromagnetic order in hexagonal FeTe is originated from its concomitant lattice distortion and Stoner instability. This study highlights its potential applications in future spintronic devices.

Shape-dependent close-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts.

Project description:Atomic-thin MoS2 materials have attracted increasing attention due to their potentials in numerous fields. However, in 2D-MoS2 sheets, the edge region usually has unique features differing from the interior region, which has potential application in enhancing catalysts and shape-dependent 2D-nanodevices. However, fabricating it cost-effectively is still very difficult. Here, we present one universal method to obtain various shape-dependent closed-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts only using one simple step, and width of the MoS2 nanobelts (minimum of 270 nm) were adjustable. Our strategy opens a new fabrication route for closed-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts, and in principle, this method is also suitable for other CVD-grown 2D materials.

Surface-Bound and Volatile Mo Oxides Produced During Oxidation of Single MoS2 Crystals in Air and High Relative Humidity.

Project description:We report on the MoO3 oxides and their derivatives on microscopic 2H MoS2 flakes oxidized in air and high relative humidity at a moderate temperature range below 410 °C. We combine XPS and AFM measurements such as topography, friction, creation of nanoscale ripples and scratches on the MoS2 flakes deposited on Si substrates. We detect MoO3 oxides mostly by measuring selected nanomechanical properties of the MoO3 layer, such as its compressive mechanical stress at the plastic yield. We discuss basal surface coverage of the single MoS2 flakes by the MoO3 oxides. We discuss conditions for appearance of all possible MoO3 oxide derivatives, such as molybdenum(VI) hydroxyoxides and MoO3 hydrates. Our findings agree with an expected mechanistic switch in thermal oxidation in water vapors vs. air.

Composition and temperature-dependent phase transition in miscible Mo1-xWxTe2 single crystals.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) WTe2 and MoTe2 with orthorhombic Td phase, being potential candidates as type-II Weyl semimetals, are attracted much attention recently. Here we synthesized a series of miscible Mo1-xWxTe2 single crystals by bromine vapor transport method. Composition-dependent X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, as well as composition and temperature-dependent resistivity prove that the tunable crystal structure (from hexagonal (2H), monoclinic (β) to orthorhombic (Td) phase) can be realized by increasing W content in Mo1-xWxTe2. Simultaneously the electrical property gradually evolves from semiconductor to semimetal behavior. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy proves that temperature also can induce the structural phase transition from β to Td phase in Mo1-xWxTe2 crystals. Based on aforementioned characterizations, we map out the temperature and composition dependent phase diagram of Mo1-xWxTe2 system. In addition, a series of electrical parameters, such as carrier type, carrier concentration and mobility, have also been presented. This work offers a scheme to accurately control structural phase in Mo1-xWxTe2 system, which can be used to explore type-II Weyl semimetal, as well as temperature/composition controlled topological phase transition therein.

Strong intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in freestanding non-van der Waals ultrathin 2D crystals.

Project description:Control of ferromagnetism is of critical importance for a variety of proposed spintronic and topological quantum technologies. Inducing long-range ferromagnetic order in ultrathin 2D crystals will provide more functional possibility to combine their unique electronic, optical and mechanical properties to develop new multifunctional coupled applications. Recently discovered intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic crystals such as Cr2Ge2Te6, CrI3 and Fe3GeTe2 are intrinsically ferromagnetic only below room temperature, mostly far below room temperature (Curie temperature, ~20-207 K). Here we develop a scalable method to prepare freestanding non-van der Waals ultrathin 2D crystals down to mono- and few unit cells (UC) and report unexpected strong, intrinsic, ambient-air-robust, room-temperature ferromagnetism with TC up to ~367 K in freestanding non-van der Waals 2D CrTe crystals. Freestanding 2D CrTe crystals show comparable or better ferromagnetic properties to widely-used Fe, Co, Ni and BaFe12O19, promising as new platforms for room-temperature intrinsically-ferromagnetic 2D crystals and integrated 2D devices.

A 2D/2D heterojunction of ultrathin Pd nanosheet/MXene towards highly efficient methanol oxidation reaction: the significance of 2D material nanoarchitectonics.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) Pd nanosheet-based catalysts have recently garnered widespread attention due to their high atom utilization efficiency. However, their catalytic ability and structural stability still require significant enhancement before they can be widely applied. In this study, we presented the rational design and controllable fabrication of a novel 2D/2D heterojunction, which consists of ultrathin Pd nanosheets (NSs) grown on the Ti3C2Tx MXene surface (Pd NSs/MXene). This heterostructure was achieved through a robust and convenient stereo-assembly strategy. The newly developed Pd NSs/MXene heterojunction not only provides numerous exposed active Pd atoms with an optimized electronic structure but also enables an intimate Pd/MXene interfacial interaction, ensuring a stable hybrid configuration. Consequently, the resulting Pd NSs/MXene heterojunction exhibits exceptional methanol oxidation properties. It possesses a large electrochemically active surface area, high mass and specific activities, and a long operating life, which are significantly superior to those of traditional Pd nanoparticle/carbon and Pd nanosheet/carbon catalysts. Theoretical simulations further reveal strong electronic interactions between the Pd nanosheet and MXene, which dramatically enhance the adsorption energy of the Pd component and simultaneously lower its d-band center. As a result, the Pd NSs/MXene heterojunction is less susceptible to CO poisoning. This work introduces a new 2D/2D heterojunction based on MXene and noble metallic materials and holds significance for the development of other novel heterojunctions, particularly within the realm of 2D material nanoarchitectonics.

NaCl-Templated Ultrathin 2D-Yttria Nanosheets Supported Pt Nanoparticles for Enhancing CO Oxidation Reaction.

Project description:Morphology of support is of fundamental significance to the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for CO oxidation reaction. Many methods for the construction of supports with specific morphology and structures greatly rely on controlling general physical and chemical synthesis conditions such as temperature or pH. In this paper, we report a facile route to prepare yttria nanosheet using NaCl as template to support platinum nanoparticles exhibiting higher CO oxidation activity than that of the normally prepared Pt/Y2O3. With the help of TEM and SEM, we found that Pt NPs evenly distributed on the surface of NaCl modified 2D-nanosheets with smaller size. The combination of XAFS and TEM characterizations demonstrated that the nano-size Pt species with PtxOy structure played an essential role in the conversion of CO and kept steady during the CO oxidation process. Moreover, the Pt nanoparticles supported on the NaCl templated Y2O3 nanosheets could be more easily reduced and thus exposed more Pt sites to adsorb CO molecules for CO oxidation according to XPS and DRIFTS results. This work offers a unique and general method for the preparation of potential non-cerium oxide rare earth element oxide supported nanocatalysts.

2D/2D Heterojunction of TiO2 Nanoparticles and Ultrathin G-C3N4 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is considered one of the promising routes to solve the energy and environmental crises. However, developing efficient and low-cost photocatalysts remains an unsolved challenge. In this work, ultrathin 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets are coupled with flat TiO2 nanoparticles as face-to-face 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts through a simple electrostatic self-assembly method. Compared with g-C3N4 and pure TiO2 nanosheets, 2D/2D TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunctions exhibit effective charge separation and transport properties that translate into outstanding photocatalytic performances. With the optimized heterostructure composition, stable hydrogen evolution activities are threefold and fourfold higher than those of pure TiO2, and g-C3N4 are consistently obtained. Benefiting from the favorable 2D/2D heterojunction structure, the TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst yields H2 evolution rates up to 3875 μmol·g-1·h-1 with an AQE of 7.16% at 380 nm.

Water induced ultrathin Mo2C nanosheets with high-density grain boundaries for enhanced hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Grain boundary controlling is an effective approach for manipulating the electronic structure of electrocatalysts to improve their hydrogen evolution reaction performance. However, probing the direct effect of grain boundaries as highly active catalytic hot spots is very challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a general water-assisted carbothermal reaction strategy for the construction of ultrathin Mo2C nanosheets with high-density grain boundaries supported on N-doped graphene. The polycrystalline Mo2C nanosheets are connected with N-doped graphene through Mo-C bonds, which affords an ultra-high density of active sites, giving excellent hydrogen evolution activity and superior electrocatalytic stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that the dz2 orbital energy level of Mo atoms is controlled by the MoC3 pyramid configuration, which plays a vital role in governing the hydrogen evolution activity. The dz2 orbital energy level of metal atoms exhibits an intrinsic relationship with the catalyst activity and is regarded as a descriptor for predicting the hydrogen evolution activity.
