Project description:Herein, we report the synthesis, structural and microstructural characterization, and thermoelectric properties of AgSnm[Sb0.8Bi0.2]Te2+m and Br-doped telluride systems. These compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction at high temperature. Powder X-ray diffraction data reveal that these samples exhibit crystal structures related to the NaCl-type lattice. The microstructures and morphologies are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Positive values of the Seebeck coefficient (S) indicate that the transport properties are dominated by holes. The S of undoped AgSnm[Sb0.8Bi0.2]Te2+m ranges from +40 to 57 μV·K-1. Br-doped samples with m = 2 show S values of +74 μV·K-1 at RT, and the Seebeck coefficient increases almost linearly with increasing temperature. The total thermal conductivity (κtot) monotonically increases with increasing temperature (10-300 K). The κtot values of undoped AgSnm[Sb0.8Bi0.2]Te2+m are ~1.8 W m-1 K-1 (m = 4) and ~1.0 W m-1 K-1 (m = 2) at 300 K. The electrical conductivity (σ) decreases almost linearly with increasing temperature, indicating metal-like behavior. The ZT value increases as a function of temperature. A maximum ZT value of ~0.07 is achieved at room temperature for the Br-doped phase with m = 4.

Project description:We present a facile approach to preparing a BiOCl1-x Br x @AgBr heterostructure using a two-step solvothermal method. Multiple characterisation techniques have been employed to investigate its morphology, structure, optical and electronic properties and photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic activity of the BiOCl1-x Br x @AgBr heterostructure was sufficiently evaluated by adopting Reactive Blue KN-R as the target organic pollutant under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared BiOCl1-x Br x @AgBr exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than BiOCl1-x Br x and BiOCl, which was ascribed to the movement of photogenerated electrons from AgBr to BiOCl1-x Br x , resulting in effective charge separation and transfer. Moreover, the modification of BiOCl1-x Br x with AgBr broadened the light absorption range, making the composite suitable for visible light excitation. The excellent photocatalytic performance provides potential opportunities to utilize BiOCl1-x Br x @AgBr for environmental purification and organic pollution treatment of water.

Project description:Hydrogen permeation membranes are a key element in improving the energy conversion efficiency and decreasing the greenhouse gas emissions from energy generation. The scientific community faces the challenge of identifying and optimizing stable and effective ceramic materials for H2 separation membranes at elevated temperature (400-800 °C) for industrial separations and intensified catalytic reactors. As such, composite materials with nominal composition BaCe0.8Eu0.2O3-δ:Ce0.8Y0.2O2-δ revealed unprecedented H2 permeation levels of 0.4 to 0.61 mL·min-1·cm-2 at 700 °C measured on 500 μm-thick-specimen. A detailed structural and phase study revealed single phase perovskite and fluorite starting materials synthesized via the conventional ceramic route. Strong tendency of Eu to migrate from the perovskite to the fluorite phase was observed at sintering temperature, leading to significant Eu depletion of the proton conducing BaCe0.8Eu0.2O3-δ phase. Composite microstructure was examined prior and after a variety of functional tests, including electrical conductivity, H2-permeation and stability in CO2 containing atmospheres at elevated temperatures, revealing stable material without morphological and structural changes, with segregation-free interfaces and no further diffusive effects between the constituting phases. In this context, dual phase material based on BaCe0.8Eu0.2O3-δ:Ce0.8Y0.2O2-δ represents a very promising candidate for H2 separating membrane in energy- and environmentally-related applications.

Project description:The strategy to increase the performance of the single solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a supporting membrane of Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) electrolyte has been implemented in this study by introducing a thin anode barrier layer of the BaCe0.8Sm0.2O3 + 1 wt% CuO (BCS-CuO) electrolyte and, additionally, a modifying layer of a Ce0.8Sm0.1Pr0.1O1.9 (PSDC) electrolyte. The method of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is used to form thin electrolyte layers on a dense supporting membrane. The electrical conductivity of the SDC substrate surface is achieved by the synthesis of a conductive polypyrrole sublayer. The kinetic parameters of the EPD process from the PSDC suspension are studied. The volt-ampere characteristics and power output of the obtained SOFC cells with the PSDC modifying layer on the cathode side and the BCS-CuO blocking layer on the anode side (BCS-CuO/SDC/PSDC) and with a BCS-CuO blocking layer on the anode side (BCS-CuO/SDC) and oxide electrodes have been studied. The effect of increasing the power output of the cell with the BCS-CuO/SDC/PSDC electrolyte membrane due to a decrease in the ohmic and polarization resistances of the cell is demonstrated. The approaches developed in this work can be applied to the development of SOFCs with both supporting and thin-film MIEC electrolyte membranes.

Project description:In this research, we performed scanning electrochemical microscopy to screen M x (In0.2Cd0.8)1-x S (M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ru, Ag, W, Ir, Pt, and Te) photocatalyst arrays for efficient photoelectrochemical reaction. Doping 30% Ag to form the Ag0.3(In0.2Cd0.8)0.7S electrode could result in the highest photocurrent, and also, the anode photocurrents were found to be 1 and 0.53 mA/cm2 under UV-visible and visible light, respectively, comparatively higher than that of the In0.2Cd0.8S electrode (0.45 and 0.25 mA/cm2). The highest incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency of the Ag0.3(In0.2Cd0.8)0.7S photocatalyst and In0.2Cd0.8S were found to be 64% (λ = 450 nm) and 57% (λ = 400 nm), respectively. The Mott-Schottky plots showed that In0.2Cd0.8S and Ag0.3(In0.2Cd0.8)0.7S photoelectrodes could exhibit a flat-band potential of -0.85 and -0.55 V versus Ag/AgCl, respectively. Based on these findings, the superior photocatalytic activity of the Ag0.3(In0.2Cd0.8)0.7S photoelectrode was mainly attributed to its high crystalline structure for efficient charge separation and reduction of charge recombination in the heterojunction of Ag0.3(In0.2Cd0.8)0.7S and Ag2S.

Project description:The infinite-layer nickelates, isostructural to the high-Tc cuprate superconductors, have emerged as a promising platform to host unconventional superconductivity and stimulated growing interest in the condensed matter community. Despite considerable attention, the superconducting pairing symmetry of the nickelate superconductors, the fundamental characteristic of a superconducting state, is still under debate. Moreover, the strong electronic correlation in the nickelates may give rise to a rich phase diagram, where the underlying interplay between the superconductivity and other emerging quantum states with broken symmetry is awaiting exploration. Here, we study the angular dependence of the transport properties of the infinite-layer nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 superconducting films with Corbino-disk configuration. The azimuthal angular dependence of the magnetoresistance (R(φ)) manifests the rotational symmetry breaking from isotropy to four-fold (C4) anisotropy with increasing magnetic field, revealing a symmetry-breaking phase transition. Approaching the low-temperature and large-magnetic-field regime, an additional two-fold (C2) symmetric component in the R(φ) curves and an anomalous upturn of the temperature-dependent critical field are observed simultaneously, suggesting the emergence of an exotic electronic phase. Our work uncovers the evolution of the quantum states with different rotational symmetries in nickelate superconductors and provides deep insight into their global phase diagram.

Project description:Heavily electron-doped iron-selenide high-transition-temperature (high-T c) superconductors, which have no hole Fermi pockets, but have a notably high T c, have challenged the prevailing s ± pairing scenario originally proposed for iron pnictides containing both electron and hole pockets. The microscopic mechanism underlying the enhanced superconductivity in heavily electron-doped iron-selenide remains unclear. Here, we used neutron scattering to study the spin excitations of the heavily electron-doped iron-selenide material Li0.8Fe0.2ODFeSe (T c = 41 K). Our data revealed nearly ring-shaped magnetic resonant excitations surrounding (π, π) at ∼21 meV. As the energy increased, the spin excitations assumed a diamond shape, and they dispersed outward until the energy reached ∼60 meV and then inward at higher energies. The observed energy-dependent momentum structure and twisted dispersion of spin excitations near (π, π) are analogous to those of hole-doped cuprates in several aspects, thus implying that such spin excitations are essential for the remarkably high T c in these materials.The microscopic mechanism underlying an enhanced superconductivity in electron-doped iron selenide superconductor remains unclear. Here, Pan et al. report the spin excitations of Li0.8Fe0.2ODFeSe, revealing analogous momentum structure and dispersion to hole-doped cuprates.

Project description:Benefits emerging from applying high-entropy ceramics in Li-ion technology are already well-documented in a growing number of papers. However, an intriguing question may be formulated: how can the multicomponent solid solution-type material ensure stable electrochemical performance? Utilizing an example of nonequimolar Sn-based Sn0.8(Co0.2Mg0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)2.2O4 high-entropy spinel oxide, we provide a comprehensive model explaining the observed very good cyclability. The material exhibits a high specific capacity above 600 mAh g-1 under a specific current of 50 mA g-1 and excellent capacity retention near 100% after 500 cycles under 200 mA g-1. The stability originates from the conversion-alloying reversible reactivity of the amorphous matrix, which forms during the first lithiation from the initial high-entropy structure, and preserves the high level of cation disorder at the atomic scale. In the altered Li-storage mechanism in relation to the simple oxides, the unwanted aggregated metallic grains are not exsolved from the anode and therefore do not form highly lithiated phases characterized by large volumetric changes. Also, the electrochemical activity of Mg from the oxide matrix can be clearly observed. Because the studied compound was prepared by a conventional solid-state route, implementation of the presented approach is facile and appears usable for any oxide anode material containing a high-entropy mixture of elements.

Project description:We report the effects of screening capacity, surface roughness, and interfacial epitaxy of the bottom electrodes on the polarization switching, domain wall (DW) roughness, and ferroelectric Curie temperature (TC) of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT)-based free-standing membranes. Singe crystalline 10-50 nm (001) PZT and PZT/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) membranes are prepared on Au, correlated oxide LSMO, and two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor MoS2 base layers. Switching the polarization of PZT yields nonvolatile current modulation in the MoS2 channel at room temperature, with an on/off ratio of up to 2 × 105 and no apparent decay for more than 3 days. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies show that the coercive field Ec for the PZT membranes varies from 0.75 to 3.0 MV cm-1 on different base layers and exhibits strong polarization asymmetry. The PZT/LSMO membranes exhibit significantly smaller Ec, with the samples transferred on LSMO showing symmetric Ec of about -0.26/+0.28 MV cm-1, smaller than that of epitaxial PZT films. The DW roughness exponent ζ points to 2D random bond disorder dominated DW roughening (ζ = 0.31) at room temperature. Upon thermal quench at progressively higher temperatures, ζ values for PZT membranes on Au and LSMO approach the theoretical value for 1D random bond disorder (ζ = 2/3), while samples on MoS2 exhibits thermal roughening (ζ = 1/2). The PZT membranes on Au, LSMO, and MoS2 show TC of about 763 ± 12, 725 ± 25, and 588 ± 12 °C, respectively, well exceeding the bulk value. Our study reveals the complex interplay between the electrostatic and mechanical boundary conditions in determining ferroelectricity in free-standing PZT membranes, providing important material parameters for the functional design of PZT-based flexible nanoelectronics.

Project description:Revealing whether dislocations accelerate oxygen ion transport is important for providing abilities in tuning the ionic conductivity of ceramic materials. In this study, we report how dislocations affect oxygen ion diffusion in Sr-doped LaMnO3 (LSM), a model perovskite oxide that serves in energy conversion technologies. LSM epitaxial thin films with thicknesses ranging from 10 nm to more than 100 nm were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on single-crystal LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates. The lattice mismatch between the film and substrates induces compressive or tensile in-plane strain in the LSM layers. This lattice strain is partially reduced by dislocations, especially in the LSM films on LaAlO3. Oxygen isotope exchange measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed the existence of at least two very different diffusion coefficients in the LSM films on LaAlO3. The diffusion profiles can be quantitatively explained by the existence of fast oxygen ion diffusion along threading dislocations that is faster by up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to that in LSM bulk.
