The Influence of Yb Doping and Sintering Conditions on the Magnetocaloric and Mechanical Properties of EuS.

ABSTRACT: For this work, europium monosulfide (EuS) powders were prepared by sulfurizing Eu₂O₃ powder with CS₂ gas. The synthesized EuS powders were sintered by SPS at temperatures in the 800-1600 °C range for 0.33-1 h at 50 MPa under vacuum conditions. The influences of Yb doping and sintering conditions on the magnetocaloric and mechanical properties of EuS were investigated systematically. An increase in sintering temperature caused the rise of lattice parameters of EuS, whereas Yb doping caused them to drop. SEM showed that the grain size of the EuS increased with sintering temperatures in the 1000-1400 °C range. Higher sintering temperatures can enlarge the magnetizability and saturation magnetization of EuS compact. On the contrary, Yb doping can weaken the magnetizability and saturation magnetization of EuS compact. All sintered polycrystalline EuS compacts had weaker thermomagnetic irreversibility and lower magnetic anisotropy.

Influence of Atmospheric Conditions on Mechanical Properties of Polyamide with Different Content of Recycled Material in Selective Laser Sintering.

Project description:The price of material is an important factor when selecting the additive polymer procedure. In selective laser sintering (SLS), the price can be reduced by the recycling of material, i.e., with different shares of original and recycled material, as well as by the orientation of the product during manufacturing. Numerous tests warn that orientation in the direction of z axis should be as low as possible to reduce the total price of the product. The product also has to satisfy the influence of atmospheric conditions to which it is exposed during its lifetime, i.e., UV radiation and humid environment. UV light, with sun being its most common source, and average humidity in different parts of the world can be approximately from 20% to 90%, depending on time, day and geographic location. In this work, the test specimens have been made of original, mixed and 100% recycled material and then exposed to the influences of UV radiation and water absorption. After having been exposed to atmospheric conditions for a longer time, the mechanical properties of the polyamide products made by selective laser sintering were tested. The results show that exposure to UV radiation reduces tensile elongation at all ratios of recycled material and orientation of 70-90% except in the z direction, while in flexural deformation it is the other way around. The effect of water was observed only between the 7th-14th day of absorption with a decrease in strength until the deformation did not change.

Data on the influence of cold isostatic pre-compaction on mechanical properties of polycrystalline nickel sintered using Spark Plasma Sintering.

Project description:Data regarding bulk polycrystalline nickel samples obtained by powder metallurgy using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) are presented, with a special emphasis on the influence of a cold isostatic pre-compaction on the resulting morphologies and subsequent mechanical properties. Three types of initial powders are used, nanometric powders, micrometric powders and a mixture of the formers. For each type of powder, the SPS cycle has been optimized for the powders without pre-compaction and the same cycle has been used to also sinter pre-compacted powders.

Tuning Mechanical Properties of Pseudopeptide Supramolecular Hydrogels by Graphene Doping.

Project description:Supramolecular hydrogels, obtained from small organic molecules, may be advantageous over polymeric ones for several applications, because these materials have some peculiar properties that differentiate them from the traditional polymeric hydrogels, such as elasticity, thixotropy, self-healing propensity, and biocompatibility. We report here the preparation of strong supramolecular pseudopeptide-based hydrogels that owe their strength to the introduction of graphene in the gelling mixture. These materials proved to be strong, stable, thermoreversible and elastic. The concentration of the gelator, the degree of graphene doping, and the nature of the trigger are crucial to get hydrogels with the desired properties, where a high storage modulus coexists with a good thixotropic behavior. Finally, NIH-3T3 cells were used to evaluate the cell response to the presence of the most promising hydrogels. The hydrogels biocompatibility remains good, if a small degree of graphene doping is introduced.

Sintering Mechanism, Microstructure Evolution, and Mechanical Properties of Ti-Added Mo2FeB2-Based Cermets.

Project description:Four series of Mo2FeB2-based cermets with Ti contents between 0 wt.% and 1.5 wt.% in 0.5 wt.% increments were prepared by in situ reaction and liquid phase sintering technology. Influences of Ti on microstructure and mechanical properties of cermets were studied. It was found that Ti addition increases formation temperatures of liquid phases in liquid-phase stage. Ti atoms replace a fraction of Mo atoms in Mo2FeB2 and the solution of Ti atoms causes the Mo2FeB2 crystal to be equiaxed. In addition, the cermets with 1.0 wt.% Ti content exhibit the smallest particle size. The solution of Ti atoms in Mo2FeB2 promotes the transformation of Mo2FeB2 particles from elongated shape to equiaxed shape. With Ti content increasing from 0 wt.% to 1.5 wt.%, the hardness and transverse rupture strength (TRS) first increase and then decrease. The maximum hardness and TRS occur with 1.0 wt.% Ti content. However, the fracture toughness decreases as Ti content increases. The cermets with 1.0 wt.% Ti content show excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, and the hardness, fracture toughness, and TRS are HRA 89.5, 12.9 MPa∙m1/2, and 1612.6 MPa, respectively.

Influence of iron ore properties on dioxin emissions during iron ore sintering.

Project description:Iron ores are principal input materials for iron and steel-making industries. Quality of iron ores is one of the critical parameters for formation of environmental pollutants related to the steel-making process. Dioxins are identified as one of the most toxic pollutants emitted during ironmaking, specifically during the sintering process. This study applied four types of iron ores and analyzed their moisture, density, particle size distribution and element concentrations to investigate their effect on the dioxin formation during sintering. Each type of iron ore was processed in a sinter pot grate. During each processing route, exhausted dust and generated sinter products were collected and subjected to PCDD/F and PCB analysis. Statistical analysis was applied to assess correlations between properties of iron ores and exhausted dioxin emissions, identifying key contributors to dioxin formation during sintering process. Results showed that Fe in iron ores was positively and significantly related to PCB 114 formation in dust and confirmed its co-catalytic effect on dioxin formation. Concentrations of Al, Ti and Cl in iron ores greatly increased PCDD/F and PCB emissions in the sintered products compared to dioxins in dust samples. The S levels and density of iron ores were highly related to the increasing PCDD/F and PCB emissions in both sinter and dust samples. By contrast, concentrations of Si in iron ores played a significant role in decreasing PCDD/F and PCB emissions in both sinter and dust samples. This study also confirmed the optimum size (< 1 mm-2.59 mm) for iron ores, which helps reduce dioxin emissions without affecting the quality of iron and steel-making products.

Influence of Graphene Sheets on Compaction and Sintering Properties of Nano-Zirconia Ceramics.

Project description:The use of a nanostructured graphene-zirconia composite will allow the development of new materials with improved performance properties and a high functionality. This work covers a stepwise study related to the creation of a nanostructured composite based on ZrO2 and graphene. A composite was prepared using two suspensions: nano-zirconia obtained by sol-gel synthesis and oxygen-free graphene obtained sonochemically. The morphology of oxygen-free graphene sheets, phase composition and the morphology of a zirconia powder, and the morphology of the synthesized composite were studied. The effect of the graphene sheets on the rheological and sintering properties of a nanostructured zirconia-based composite powder has been studied. It has been found that graphene sheets in a hybrid nanostructure make it difficult to press at the elastic deformation stage, and the composite passes into the plastic region at a lower pressure than a single nano-zirconia. A sintering mechanism was proposed for a composite with a graphene content of 0.635 wt%, in which graphene is an important factor affecting the process mechanism. It has been determined that the activation energy of the composite sintering is more than two times higher than for a single nano-zirconia. Apparently, due to the van der Waals interaction, the graphene sheets partially stabilize the zirconia and prevent the disordering of the surface monolayers of its nanocrystals and premelting prior to the sintering. This leads to an increase in the activation energy of the composite sintering, and its sintering occurs, according to a mixed mechanism, in which the grain boundary diffusion predominates, in contrast to the single nano-zirconia sintering, which occurs through a viscous flow.

Effect of Two-Step Sintering on the Mechanical and Electrical Properties of 5YSZ and 8YSZ Ceramics.

Project description:Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been widely used in structural and functional ceramics because of its excellent physicochemical properties. In this paper, the density, average gain size, phase structure, and mechanical and electrical properties of conventionally sintered (CS) and two-step sintered (TSS) 5YSZ and 8YSZ are investigated in detail. As the grain size of YSZ ceramics became smaller, dense YSZ materials with a submicron grain size and low sintering temperature were optimized in terms of their mechanical and electrical properties. 5YSZ and 8YSZ in the TSS process significantly improved the plasticity, toughness, and electrical conductivity of the samples and significantly suppressed the rapid grain growth. The experimental results showed that the hardness of the samples was mainly affected by the volume density, that the maximum fracture toughness of 5YSZ increased from 3.514 MPa·m1/2 to 4.034 MPa·m1/2 in the TSS process, an increase of 14.8%, and that the maximum fracture toughness of 8YSZ increased from 1.491 MPa·m1/2 to 2.126 MPa·m1/2, an increase of 42.58%. The maximum total conductivity of the 5YSZ and 8YSZ samples under 680 °C increased from 3.52 × 10-3 S/cm and 6.09 × 10-3 S/cm to 4.52 × 10-3 S/cm and 7.87 × 10-3 S/cm, an increase of 28.41% and 29.22%, respectively.

Structure and Properties of High-Entropy Boride Ceramics Synthesized by Mechanical Alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering.

Project description:This manuscript shows the study of the structure, mechanical, and chemical properties of high-entropy borides MeB2 (Me = Ti, Ta, Nb, Hf, Zr). High-entropy borides were synthesized by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. A chemically homogeneous powder with a low iron content (0.12%) was obtained in a planetary mill by rotating the planetary disk/pots at 200-400 rpm and a processing time of 7.5 h. The structure, mechanical, and chemical properties of the resulting high-entropy borides have been studied. A single-phase hexagonal structure is formed during spark plasma sintering of mechanically alloyed powders at 2000 °C. The microhardness of the samples ranged from 1763 to 1959 HV. Gas-dynamic tests of the synthesized materials showed that an increase in the content of Zr and Hf in the composition increases the thermal-oxidative resistance of the material.

Densification of hydroxyapatite/zirconia nanocomposites fabricated via low-temperature mineralization sintering process and their mechanical properties.

Project description:Hydroxyapatite/zirconia (HAP/ZrO2) composites were fabricated via the low-temperature mineralization sintering process (LMSP) at an extremely low temperature of 130 °C to enhance the mechanical properties of HAP and broaden its practical applications. For this purpose, 5-20 vol% calcia-stabilized ZrO2 were introduced into HAP, and HAP/ZrO2 nanoparticles, mixed with simulated body fluid, were densified under a uniaxial pressure of 800 MPa at 130 °C. At 10 vol% ZrO2, the relative density of the HAP/ZrO2 composite was determined to be 88.3 ± 1.1%. Additionally, it exhibited the highest values of mechanical properties such as the Vickers hardness (3.68 ± 0.18 GPa), fracture toughness (1.11 ± 0.10 MPa·m1/2), biaxial flexural strength (63.72 ± 2.35 MPa), and Young's modulus (83.91 ± 1.93 GPa) among the composite samples. These values were considerably higher than those of the pure HAP matrix due to the adequate reinforcement by ZrO2 nanoparticles. Notably, owing to the low sintering temperature, phase decomposition of HAP, normally observed at high sintering temperatures above 1200 °C, was not observed. These results suggest that LMSP enables the incorporation of reinforcing ceramic materials with high sintering temperatures into bioactive materials at significantly lower temperatures, thereby improving their properties.

Fabrication of Self-Lubricating Porous UHMWPE with Excellent Mechanical Properties and Friction Performance via Rotary Sintering.

Project description:Porous ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) self-lubricating materials were designed and fabricated by a rotary sintering method, and the microstructure and properties were evaluated. Results showed that the rotary molding could not only significantly improve the molding efficiency but also formed uniform internal microstructures with high porosity, excellent mechanical properties, and low friction coefficient. Under oil lubricating conditions, the friction curve of samples quickly reached a steady state, the friction coefficient was reduced by 50%, and the repeat utilization was up to 99%. The following optimum sintering conditions were shown: Sintering temperature of 180 °C or 190 °C, sintering time determined as 10 min, and loading capacity of between 3.6 g and 3.8 g. Therefore, it is expected that this work will open a convenient and compatible strategy for fabricating porous materials with good self-lubricating performance.
