Religious Conspiracy Theories About the COVID-19 Pandemic Are Associated With Negative Mental Health.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Together with the COVID-19 pandemic, conspiracy theories have begun to spread. Evidence is lacking for religious conspiracy theories (RCT) related to COVID-19 in a non-religious environment. This study aimed to assess links between religiosity and spirituality (R/S) and RCT about COVID-19, and to examine their associations with mental health. Methods: A sample of Czech adults (n = 1,273, mean age = 47.5, SD = 16.4; 51.5% male) participated in the survey. We measured R/S, RCT, negative religious coping (NRC), feelings impairment and mental health symptoms. Results: We found R/S were significantly associated with RCT with β 0.71 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.59-0.82) for the strongest association. Moreover, RCT and NRC were strongly associated with paranoia, anxiety and depression. The most frequent association was found for NRC and paranoid ideation, with β of 0.35 (95% CI 0.26-0.44). Conclusion: Our findings showed associations between religiosity/spirituality and beliefs in religious conspiracy theories about COVID-19. Moreover, these RCT and negative religious coping were linked to higher possibility of mental health problems. Understanding these associations may help prevent this negative impact and contribute to the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic help.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an upsurge in the spread of diverse conspiracy theories (CTs) with real-life impact. However, the dynamics of user engagement remain under-researched. In the present study, we leverage Twitter data across 11 months in 2020 from the timelines of 109 CT posters and a comparison group (non-CT group) of equal size. Within this approach, we used word embeddings to distinguish non-CT content from CT-related content as well as analysed which element of CT content emerged in the pandemic. Subsequently, we applied time series analyses on the aggregate and individual level to investigate whether there is a difference between CT posters and non-CT posters in non-CT tweets as well as the temporal dynamics of CT tweets. In this regard, we provide a description of the aggregate and individual series, conducted a STL decomposition in trends, seasons, and errors, as well as an autocorrelation analysis, and applied generalised additive mixed models to analyse nonlinear trends and their differences across users. The narrative motifs, characterised by word embeddings, address pandemic-specific motifs alongside broader motifs and can be related to several psychological needs (epistemic, existential, or social). Overall, the comparison of the CT group and non-CT group showed a substantially higher level of overall COVID-19-related tweets in the non-CT group and higher level of random fluctuations. Focussing on conspiracy tweets, we found a slight positive trend but, more importantly, an increase in users in 2020. Moreover, the aggregate series of CT content revealed two breaks in 2020 and a significant albeit weak positive trend since June. On the individual level, the series showed strong differences in temporal dynamics and a high degree of randomness and day-specific sensitivity. The results stress the importance of Twitter as a means of communication during the pandemic and illustrate that these beliefs travel very fast and are quickly endorsed.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s41060-021-00298-6.

Project description:BackgroundIn the United Kingdom, onsite religious services were halted during COVID-19 lockdowns, which were followed by various levels of restrictions on communal worship including social distancing, mandatory wearing of face masks, adequate ventilation and a ban on congregational singing and chanting. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of closures and changes within places of worship in response to the first lockdown in 2020, to assess the effect of the pandemic on religious practice and worshippers' wellbeing and religious coping.MethodsParticipants were regular worshippers in the UK, recruited through an online survey using convenience sampling. Respondents were asked about their attitudes to changes to places of worship in the UK and their wellbeing and mental health, including assessment of their risk of depression and anxiety using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7) measures. Questionnaires were completed August to November 2020.Findings939 participants were included in the analysis. Median age was 52.7 years and 66.1 % were female. 80.7 % identified as Christian. 165 (19.3 %) had mild, 45 (5.3 %) moderate, 25 (2.9 %) moderately severe and 10 (1.2 %) severe depression, and 192 (22.5 %) had mild, 55 (6.4 %) moderate and 27 (3.2 %) severe anxiety, according to PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores, respectively. Nearly half (46.4 %) reported that their mood and anxiety levels had worsened and 16.6 % reported that they felt the things they were doing in their lives were not worthwhile. The vast majority of respondents (92.7 %) reported that prayer had helped them cope with the way they had felt during lockdown: 29.2 % and 47.0 % reported that it helped moderately and a great deal, respectively. This 76.2 % had significantly lower levels of moderate/severe depression and anxiety (adjusted odds ratio: depression 0.37 (95%CI 0.22-0.63), anxiety 0.52 (95%CI 0.31-0.88).InterpretationOur study demonstrates the significant impact of COVID-19 on communal worshippers' mental health and reinforces the benefits of positive religious coping during the first UK lockdown. Barriers to communal worship participation during lockdowns, including access to appropriate technology, need to be recognised and facilitators identified.
