Location-Linked QR Code as a Safe Tool for Recording Classroom Attendance During COVID-19 Pandemic: Perspectives of Medical Students.

ABSTRACT: COVID-19 lockdowns affected educational programs. Online learning has suddenly become the main form of medical education. However, attendance enhances a student's competency and professionalism. Rising student numbers and the COVID-19 pandemic make in-class learning challenging. This study investigates medical students' perceptions of a recently implemented tool for recording attendance using a QR code that detects students' location while scanning. An online questionnaire was designed to collect responses. One hundred thirty-two students completed the survey. Students agreed that the method was usable, reliable, accurate, secure, and convenient. This method should be investigated as a standard tool for attendance recording.

Optimizing learning in undergraduate psychology students: the impact of advance quizzing, review, and classroom attendance.

Project description:This study investigates whether introducing simple cognitive interventions that are known to enhance learning in laboratory studies can be transferred to classroom settings. In an introductory psychology class, students were provided with a brief advance quiz on the topic covered in each particular lecture. In case they did not attend class, they still had the opportunity to fill it out at home. The interventions were offered on a voluntary basis and the students were given the opportunity to obtain an extra point towards the final exam by reviewing the key points of each lecture on a regular basis. The results indicate that both advance quizzing and review enhanced the grades on the final examination. Although it is likely that individual differences also contribute to learning outcomes, these effects were specific for the particular course and independent from class attendance. The results indicate that transfer of simple cognitive interventions from laboratory to classroom settings is feasible. They also indicate that these interventions can be effectively implemented into the lectures to boost student learning.

A look beyond the QR code of SNARE proteins.

Project description:Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor Attachment protein REceptor (SNARE) proteins catalyze the fusion process of vesicles with target membranes in eukaryotic cells. To do this, they assemble in a zipper-like fashion into stable complexes between the membranes. Structural studies have shown that the complexes consist of four different helices, which we subdivide into Qa-, Qb-, Qc-, and R-helix on the basis of their sequence signatures. Using a combination of biochemistry, modeling and molecular dynamics, we investigated how the four different types are arranged in a complex. We found that there is a matching pattern in the core of the complex that dictates the position of the four fundamental SNARE types in the bundle, resulting in a QabcR complex. In the cell, several different cognate QabcR-SNARE complexes catalyze the different transport steps between the compartments of the endomembrane system. Each of these cognate QabcR complexes is compiled from a repertoire of about 20 SNARE subtypes. Our studies show that exchange within the four types is largely tolerated structurally, although some non-cognate exchanges lead to structural imbalances. This suggests that SNARE complexes have evolved for a catalytic mechanism, a mechanism that leaves little scope for selectivity beyond the QabcR rule.

QR Code Lecture Activity as a Tool for Increasing Nonmajors Biology Students' Enjoyment of Interaction with Their Local Environment.

Project description:The impact of the Internet on education has been recognized for decades, and as technology advances, the ways in which students can access Internet content is ever increasing. Most students have some kind of portable smart device with which they access Internet content without the locational constraints of a desktop computer. This mobility has prompted abundant literature suggesting ways that Quick Response Codes (QR codes), a kind of two dimensional barcode, could be used to advance student learning. However, very few studies have tested the usefulness of QR codes in undergraduate science classes. We report on our development of a campus "scavenger hunt" activity using QR codes. We found that this activity develops application skills of the concepts of native and invasive species and enjoyment of coverage of content relative to traditional lecture in a nonmajors Environmental Science class at a four-year teaching institution.

DNA barcode goes two-dimensions: DNA QR code web server.

Project description:The DNA barcoding technology uses a standard region of DNA sequence for species identification and discovery. At present, "DNA barcode" actually refers to DNA sequences, which are not amenable to information storage, recognition, and retrieval. Our aim is to identify the best symbology that can represent DNA barcode sequences in practical applications. A comprehensive set of sequences for five DNA barcode markers ITS2, rbcL, matK, psbA-trnH, and CO1 was used as the test data. Fifty-three different types of one-dimensional and ten two-dimensional barcode symbologies were compared based on different criteria, such as coding capacity, compression efficiency, and error detection ability. The quick response (QR) code was found to have the largest coding capacity and relatively high compression ratio. To facilitate the further usage of QR code-based DNA barcodes, a web server was developed and is accessible at http://qrfordna.dnsalias.org. The web server allows users to retrieve the QR code for a species of interests, convert a DNA sequence to and from a QR code, and perform species identification based on local and global sequence similarities. In summary, the first comprehensive evaluation of various barcode symbologies has been carried out. The QR code has been found to be the most appropriate symbology for DNA barcode sequences. A web server has also been constructed to allow biologists to utilize QR codes in practical DNA barcoding applications.

QR code and mobile payment: The disruptive forces in retail

Project description:The emergence of mobile payment (m-payment) resulted in the disruption of many sectors in the business sphere, particularly the retail industry. However, the acceptance of m-payment still has substantial room for improvement. Therefore, this study purports to ascertain the critical antecedents that impact the m-payment adoption intention, in particular the type of m-payment that utilizes the Quick Response (QR) code technology, through an extended Mobile Technology Acceptance Model. On top of offering several theoretical implications, numerous practical implications are also provided for stakeholders in the retail sector. Highlights • This study focused on a single type of mobile payment that utilizes QR code.• The Mobile Technology Acceptance Model was extended with non-technological factors.• Mobile usefulness and optimism have direct impacts on intention to adopt.• Perceived transaction convenience has positive association with mobile usefulness.• Perceived transaction speed matters in improving mobile ease of use.

Global Cardiovascular Risk Profile of Italian Medical Students Assessed by a QR Code Survey. Data from UNIMI HEART SURVEY: Does Studying Medicine Hurt?

Project description:Few studies to date have addressed global cardiovascular (CV) risk profile in a "protected" young population as that of medical school students. to assess CV traditional risk factors and global CV risk profile of Italian medical students throughout the six years of university. A cross-sectional survey accessible online via quick response (QR) code was conducted among 2700 medical students at the University of Milan, Italy. Data on baseline characteristics, traditional CV risk factors, diet, lifestyle habits, and perceived lifestyle variations were evaluated across different years of school. Overall, 1183 students (mean age, 22.05 years; 729 women (61.6%)) out of 2700 completed the questionnaire (43.8% rate response). More than 16% of the students had at least 3 out of 12 CV risk factors and only 4.6% had ideal cardiovascular health as defined by the American Heart Association. Overweight, underweight, physical inactivity, sub-optimal diet, smoke history, and elevated stress were commonly reported. Awareness of own blood pressure and lipid profile increased over the academic years as well as the number of high-blood-pressure subjects, alcohol abusers, and students constantly stressed for university reasons. Moreover, a reduction in physical-activity levels over the years was reported by half of the students. Conclusion and Relevance: This study demonstrates that a "protected" population as that of young medical students can show an unsatisfactory cardiovascular risk profile and suggests that medical school itself, being demanding and stressful, may have a role in worsening of the lifestyle.

Identification of QR Code Perspective Distortion Based on Edge Directions and Edge Projections Analysis.

Project description:QR (quick response) Codes are one of the most popular types of two-dimensional (2D) matrix codes currently used in a wide variety of fields. Two-dimensional matrix codes, compared to 1D bar codes, can encode significantly more data in the same area. We have compared algorithms capable of localizing multiple QR Codes in an image using typical finder patterns, which are present in three corners of a QR Code. Finally, we present a novel approach to identify perspective distortion by analyzing the direction of horizontal and vertical edges and by maximizing the standard deviation of horizontal and vertical projections of these edges. This algorithm is computationally efficient, works well for low-resolution images, and is also suited to real-time processing.

Attendance Improves Student Electrocardiography Interpretation Skills Using the Flipped Classroom Format.

Project description:The implementation of classroom capture and casting technologies has changed how content can be accessed. Students can access live, streaming, and/or recorded formats of material. Broadening this accessibility has, in turn, introduced flexibility for both the learner and the instructor. This flexibility has impacted the necessity of attendance to access classroom-delivered content. There are many reports that investigate the changing attendance climate as well as the potential impact of attendance on student outcomes. Here we investigated the impact of attending classroom activities on student performance with two common content delivery methods in an undergraduate, pre-clinical cardiology course. Electrocardiography (ECG) interpretation was taught using a flipped classroom format which allowed for the practice of interpretive skills with faculty guidance. Other components of the course related to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cardiovascular disease were delivered using a lecture-based format. The results demonstrate that attendees outperform their classmates in the ability to interpret ECGs and related content. However, the attending student does not appear to have a performance advantage when content is delivered by lecture. The results provide evidence for students to prioritize their time when making decisions about attendance, based on teaching modality, when given a choice. Further, the information can guide curricular change and help colleges and programs identify curricular activities that have a clear attendance benefit for students.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40670-022-01689-5.

What Intentions and Interesting Information Can Attract Consumers to Scan QR Code While Buying Eggs?

Project description:A Quick Response Code (QR Code) aims to provide accurate and traceable information to consumers wanting to verify the quality of agri-food products. This study aimed to investigate the experiences and intentions of scanning QR Code in traditional markets and supermarkets. Furthermore, the types of egg information in the QR Code were explored to identify consumer interests when purchasing eggs. The empirical data were collected from 1112 valid responses throughout Taiwan from July to September, 2020. The Logit, Probit models, and the Bivariate Probit model were used to examine the data. Results showed that shoppers' propensity to scan QR Code revealed a significant difference between traditional markets and supermarkets, i.e., supermarket shoppers having higher a propensity to scan a QR Code. Of the 10 types of potential egg information in the QR Code, over half of respondents said that the production certificate label and inspection information were the top reasons that they would be interested in scanning a QR Code. This was particularly the case for homemakers aged between 51 and 60 years old and those who had scanned QR Code before and would like to pursue more egg information. Since the egg producers have resisted joining the traceability system, the implication of this study provides very practical strategies for government, policy makers, and producers in Taiwan.

Consumer purchase intention towards a quick response (QR) code for antibiotic information: an exploratory study.

Project description:Increasing awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has raised concerns surrounding antimicrobial use (AMU) in food-producing animals and has focused attention towards livestock production free from antibiotic use. As antibiotic-free livestock production proliferates in the UK, there is an increasing need to implement a system, such as the use of a QR code, to provide consumers with reliable antibiotic information while ensuring that animal welfare standards are upheld. Subsequently, this study aims to explore UK consumers' perceptions and purchase intention towards QR code labelled pork, and to identify determinants of its purchase, incorporating various theoretical constructs from the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Based on results, consumers' perceptions, perceived control, and attitudes towards QR code labelled pork are the main determinants of purchase intention. QR code labelled pork may offer a suitable alternative to antibiotic-free labelling as it provides consumers with antibiotic information without inadvertently communicating that conventionally produced pork is unsafe.
