Project description:Practically important metal electrodes are usually polycrystalline, comprising surface grains of many different crystallographic orientations, as well as grain boundaries. In this study, scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) is applied in tandem with co-located electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) to give a holistic view of the relationship between the surface structure and the electrochemical activity and corrosion susceptibility of polycrystalline Cu. An unusual aqueous nanodroplet/oil (dodecane)/metal three-phase configuration is employed, which opens up new prospects for fundamental studies of multiphase electrochemical systems, and mimics the environment of corrosion in certain industrial and automotive applications. In this configuration, the nanodroplet formed at the end of the SECCM probe (nanopipette) is surrounded by dodecane, which acts as a reservoir for oil-soluble species (e.g., O2) and can give rise to enhanced flux(es) across the immiscible liquid-liquid interface, as shown by finite element method (FEM) simulations. This unique three-phase configuration is used to fingerprint nanoscale corrosion in a nanodroplet cell, and to analyse the interrelationship between the Cu oxidation, Cu2+ deposition and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) processes, together with nanoscale open circuit (corrosion) potential, in a grain-by-grain manner. Complex patterns of surface reactivity highlight the important role of grains of high-index orientation and microscopic surface defects (e.g., microscratches) in modulating the corrosion-properties of polycrystalline Cu. This work provides a roadmap for in-depth surface structure-function studies in (electro)materials science and highlights how small variations in surface structure (e.g., crystallographic orientation) can give rise to large differences in nanoscale reactivity.

Project description:The nanocutting has been paid great attention in ultra-precision machining and high sealing mechanical devices due to its nanometer level machining accuracy and surface quality. However, the conventional methods applicable to reproduce the cutting process numerically such as finite element (FE) and molecular dynamics (MD) are challenging to unveil the cutting machining mechanism of the nanocutting due to the limitation of the simulation scale and computational cost. Here a modified quasi-continuous method (QC) is employed to analyze the dynamic nanocutting behavior (below 10 nm) of the copper sample. After preliminary validation of the effectiveness via the wave propagation on the copper ribbon, we have assessed the effects of cutting tool parameters and back-engagement on the cutting force, stress distribution and surface metamorphic layer depth during the nanocutting process of the copper sample. The cutting force and depth of the surface metamorphic layer is susceptible to the back-engagement, and well tolerant to the cutting tool parameters such as the tool rank angle and tool rounded edge diameter. The results obtained by the QC method are comparable to those from the MD method, which indicate the effectiveness and applicability of the modified QC method in the nanocutting process. Overall, our work provides an applicable and efficient strategy to investigate the nanocutting machining mechanism of the large-scale workpiece and shed light on its applications in the super-precision and high surface quality devices.

Project description:Antimould agents are widely used in different applications, such as specialty paints, building materials, wood preservation and crop protection. However, many antimould agents can be toxic to the environment. This work aims to evaluate the application of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) surface modified with boronic acid (BA) terminal groups as antimould agents. We developed CuONPs grafted with (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GLYMO), coupled with 4-hydroxyphenylboronic acid (4-HPBA), which provided a strong boost of their action as antimould agents. We studied the antimould action of the 4-HPBA-functionalized CuONPs against two mould species: Aspergillus niger (A. niger) and Penicillium chrysogenum (P. chrysogenum). The cis-diol groups of polysaccharides expressed on the mould cell walls can form reversible covalent bonds with the BA groups attached on the CuONPs surface. This allowed them to bind strongly to the mould surface, resulting in a very substantial boost of their antimould activity, which is not based on electrostatic adhesion, as in the case of bare CuONPs. The impact of these BA-surface functionalized nanoparticles was studied by measuring the growth of the mould colonies versus time. The BA-functionalized CuONPs showed significant antimould action, compared to the untreated mould sample at the same conditions and period of time. These results can be applied for the development of more efficient antimould treatments at a lower concentration of active agent with potentially substantial economic and environmental benefits.

Project description:Nanoscale conductive filaments, usually associated with resistive memory or memristor technology, may also be used for chemical sensing and nanophotonic applications; however, realistic implementation of the technology requires precise knowledge of the conditions that control the formation and dissolution of filaments. Here we describe and characterize an addressable direct-write nanoelectrochemical approach to achieve repeatable formation/dissolution of Ag filaments across a ∼100 nm poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) film containing either Ag+ alone or Ag+ together with 50 nm Ag-nanoparticles acting as bipolar electrodes. Using a conductive AFM tip, formation occurs when the PEO film is subjected to a forward bias, and dissolution occurs under reverse bias. Formation-dissolution kinetics were studied for three film compositions: Ag|PEO-Ag+, Ag|poly(ethylene glycol) monolayer-PEO-Ag+, and Ag|poly(ethylene glycol) monolayer-PEO-Ag+/Ag-nanoparticle. Statistical analysis shows that the distribution of formation times exhibits Gaussian behavior, and the fastest average initial formation time occurs for the Ag|PEO-Ag+ system. In contrast, formation in the presence of Ag nanoparticles likely proceeds by a noncontact bipolar electrochemical mechanism, exhibiting the slowest initial filament formation. Dissolution times are log-normal for all three systems, and repeated reformation of filaments from previously formed structures is characterized by rapid regrowth. The direct-write bipolar electrochemical deposition/dissolution strategy developed here presents an approach to reconfigurable, noncontact in situ wiring of nanoparticle arrays-thereby enabling applications where actively controlled connectivity of nanoparticle arrays is used to manipulate nanoelectronic and nanophotonic behavior. The system further allows for facile manipulation of experimental conditions while simultaneously characterizing surface conditions and filament formation/dissolution kinetics.

Project description:Carbonaceous residues on copper pipes during the manufacturing process are known to be one of the main causes of pitting corrosion on copper pipes. This study examined the corrosion-inhibiting effect of benzotriazole (BTA) on C12200 copper pipes with carbonaceous film in synthetic tap water. In the absence of BTA, localized corrosion mechanisms due to galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, and oxygen-concentration cell were proposed in the boundary part of the carbonaceous film on the copper through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analyses. Electrochemical tests showed that BTA inhibits corrosion by forming Cu-BTA complexes on all over the copper surface where carbonaceous film is present. BTA mitigates galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion at the boundary of the carbonaceous film and suppresses the formation of oxygen-concentration cells through the formation of a Cu-BTA complex.

Project description:Control synthesis of high quality large-area graphene on transition metals (TMs) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the most fascinating approach for practical device applications. Interaction of carbon atoms and TMs is quite critical to obtain graphene with precise layer number, crystal size and structure. Here, we reveal a solid phase reaction process to achieve Cu assisted graphene growth in nanoscale by in-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM). Significant structural transformation of amorphous carbon nanofiber (CNF) coated with Cu is observed with an applied potential in a two probe system. The coated Cu particle recrystallize and agglomerate toward the cathode with applied potential due to joule heating and large thermal gradient. Consequently, the amorphous carbon start crystallizing and forming sp(2) hybridized carbon to form graphene sheet from the tip of Cu surface. We observed structural deformation and breaking of the graphene nanoribbon with a higher applied potential, attributing to saturated current flow and induced Joule heating. The observed graphene formation in nanoscale by the in-situ TEM process can be significant to understand carbon atoms and Cu interaction.

Project description:The development of oxidation processes with the efficient generation of powerful radicals is the most interesting and thought-provoking dimension of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. This study reports the successful preparation of a magnetic spinel of CuFe2O4 using a facile, non-toxic, and cost-efficient co-precipitation method. The prepared material exhibited a synergetic effect with photocatalytic PMS oxidation, which was effective in degrading the recalcitrant benzotriazole (BTA). Moreover, central composite design (CCD) analysis confirmed that the highest BTA degradation rate reached 81.4% after 70 min of irradiation time under the optimum operating conditions of CuFe2O4 = 0.4 g L-1, PMS = 2 mM, and BTA = 20 mg L-1. Furthermore, the active species capture experiments conducted in this study revealed the influence of various species, including •OH, SO4•-, O2•-, and h+ in the CuFe2O4/UV/PMS system. The results showed that SO4•- played a predominant role in BTA photodegradation. The combination of photocatalysis and PMS activation enhanced the consumption of metal ions in the redox cycle reactions, thus minimizing metal ion leaching. Additionally, this maintained the reusability of the catalyst with reasonable mineralization efficiency, which reached more than 40% total organic carbon removal after four batch experiments. The presence of common inorganic anions was found to have a retardant effect on BTA oxidation, with the order of retardation following: HCO3- > Cl- > NO3- > SO42-. Overall, this work demonstrated a simple and environmentally benign strategy to exploit the synergy between the photocatalytic activity of CuFe2O4 and PMS activation for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with widely used industrial chemicals such as BTA.

Project description:Benzotriazole (BTAH) has been used for decades as corrosion inhibitor and antifreeze. Since it is fairly soluble in water but very stable and can only be partly removed from wastewater treatment plants, it represents a threat to the environment and thus also to human health. Therefore, it is of uttermost importance to have a detection method capable of monitoring the concentration of BTAH at trace level on-site. Here, we demonstrate that a sensor based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is capable of detecting trace-level concentrations of BTAH. We carefully studied the concentration dependency and the time dependent coverage. Moreover, we could not only perform the measurements with clean solution but also with real samples from a wastewater treatment plant, ensuring that our method proposed works in a complex environment.

Project description:Mechanofluorochromic nanoparticles have been prepared from a difluoroboron β-diketonate complex, and their behavior has been investigated at the nanoscale using atomic force microscopy (AFM) coupled with fluorescence spectroscopy. Two types of nanoparticles were observed, associated with green and yellow emission, reflecting the crystalline polymorphism of this material. While the green-emitting nanoparticles are mechanically insensitive under our conditions, the yellow-emitting ones display a marked hypsochromic shift upon shearing with the AFM tip. At the macroscopic level, the grinding of the bulk material is attributed to the amorphization of the crystalline powder. On the contrary, the marked mechanofluorochromism observed at the nanoscale is attributed to a crystal-to-crystal phase transition. This specific behavior at the nanolevel is extremely promising for applications such as nanoprobes of local mechanical stress.

Project description:Metal-sulfur batteries have received great attention for electrochemical energy storage due to high theoretical capacity and low cost, but their further development is impeded by low sulfur utilization, poor electrochemical kinetics, and serious shuttle effect of the sulfur cathode. To avoid these problems, herein, a triple-synergistic small-molecule sulfur cathode is designed by employing N, S co-doped hierarchical porous bamboo charcoal as a sulfur host in an aqueous Cu-S battery. Expect the enhanced conductivity and chemisorption induced by N, S synergistic co-doping, the intrinsic synergy of macro-/meso-/microporous triple structure also ensures space-confined small-molecule sulfur as high utilization reactant and effectively alleviates the volume expansion during conversion reaction. Under a further joint synergy between hierarchical structure and heteroatom doping, the resulting sulfur cathode endows the Cu-S battery with outstanding electrochemical performance. Cycled at 5 A g-1, it can deliver a high reversible capacity of 2,509.8 mAh g-1 with a good capacity retention of 97.9% after 800 cycles. In addition, a flexible hybrid pouch cell built by a small-molecule sulfur cathode, Zn anode, and gel electrolytes can firmly deliver high average operating voltage of about 1.3 V with a reversible capacity of over 2,500 mAh g-1 under various destructive conditions, suggesting that the triple-synergistic small-molecule sulfur cathode promises energetic metal-sulfur batteries.
