Dataset of dust mass accumulation rates for the loess-palaeosol sequences from the Carpathian Basin.

ABSTRACT: In this article, a dataset of age-depth modelling data, sedimentation rates and dust mass accumulation rates (MAR) from four loess-palaeosol sequences from the Carpathian Basin is presented. The dataset is related to the article "Detailed luminescence dating of dust mass accumulation rates over the last two glacial-interglacial cycles from the Irig loess-palaeosol sequence, Carpathian Basin", published in the journal Global and Planetary Change by Perić et al. [1]. In the dataset, luminescence ages from the loess sites Irig, Nosak, Stari Slankamen and Crvenka were modeled using the r.bacon software after which the dust mass accumulation rates were calculated. For a more realistic representation the MARs were subsequently smoothed using the SigmaPlot software. For all sites, minimum, maximum, median and mean values for the modelled ages and accumulation rates are calculated and presented.

Historical fog climate dataset for Carpathian Basin from 1886 to 1919.

Project description:This paper presents the historical fog climate dataset from 1886 to 1919 for Hungary and its neighbouring countries in the Carpathian Basin. The dataset was obtained from the yearbooks of the Royal Hungarian Central Institute of Meteorology and Earth Magnetism (RHCIMEM) established in 1870 to investigate the climatic features of Hungary during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Monthly observations were recorded from 1871 and daily observations were recorded from 1886. The yearbooks contain daily meteorological records of temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, pressure, wind speed and direction, cloudiness and surface weather conditions along with monthly summaries for 24 meteorological stations. The daily weather observations were recorded three times a day, namely at 07:00, 14:00 and 21:00 local time. Station information (location, environment, instrumentation, observations etc.) can also be found in the yearbooks as metadata. For example, the definition of fog in the case of historical observations is the same as that of today, i.e., fog is detected if the maximum horizontal visibility is less than 1 km. In this way fog observations are easily comparable to today's observations without requiring further data correction and homogenisation. The longest 13 continuously recorded fog observation datasets have the length between 15 and 34 years. The stations are located in 5 countries of the Carpathian Basin at present. These datastests are suitable for conducting historical climatic investigations and can also serve as reference datasets. The historical dataset can be used to study the annual and seasonal changes in frequency and duration of fog events in the Carpathian Basin as a reference, thus facilitating research in the field of fog climatology and forecast.

A macromodel dns/swat dataset for the sediment yield analysis in the raba river basin (Carpathian mts.).

Project description:A database has been created as a result of the Raba River basin (Carpathian Mts., Poland) mapping/projection in the Macromodel DNS/SWAT. The sediment yield simulations (SYLD) in each of the 36 designated sub-basins have been performed, taking also into account seasonal variability. The model subsequently has been used as a reference/baseline for subsequent variant scenarios, simulating forecasted changes in the environment. The generated data ultimately allowed for creation of the current dataset. The impact of 20 variant scenarios, simulating forecasted climate and land use changes, on the sediment yield values was analyzed. The applied scenarios took into account various possibilities, from hypothetical ones, where only one parameter has been changed, to combined ones, which included simultaneous change of selected parameters. Short-term (2021-2050) and long-term (2071-2100) time horizons have also been included in this analysis. Sediment yield values and their variability, depending on the season, can be successfully used as reference values for the other mountain and sub-mountainous catchments, both in the Carpathian Mts., and throughout central Europe. Due to the permanent lack of monitoring data on the sediment yields, not only in Poland, the presented database is a valuable source of information. Moreover, spatial and temporal predictions of sediment yield changes are necessary to decide on actions which should be taken to reduce impact of climate changes at the basin scale. This data can be also used as a basis for further research related to the transport of pollutants adsorbed on sediment particles.

Pre-Quaternary decoupling between Asian aridification and high dust accumulation rates.

Project description:Theories of late Cenozoic climate cooling assume that central Asian aridification and high dust accumulation rates in the Chinese Loess Plateau and the North Pacific Ocean are genetically related. On the basis of detailed sediment provenance analysis, we show that high dust accumulation rates in the Chinese Loess Plateau and the North Pacific Ocean during the late Miocene-Pliocene were mainly caused by increased erosion in the Qilian Mountains and low-elevation eastern Asia areas, driven by the effects of East Asian summer monsoon intensification. We conclude that precipitation-driven erosion increased dust input to the North Pacific Ocean and may have played a pivotal role in late Cenozoic climate cooling.

Cultural diversity shaped neolithic subsistence in the Carpathian Basin.

Project description:Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis from archaeological human and animal bone collagen is a powerful tool to enlighten past socio-agricultural systems and their close links to environmental conditions. To assess whether isotopic patterns are a function of cultural behavior or rather determined by environmental diversity, we test the spatio-temporal effects of conditional and multivariate exploratory and environmental models on stable isotope variability in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Carpathian Basin (6000-2800 BCE). Our results stress that variation in environmental settings influence both the isotope baselines and the subsistence strategies of early agricultural societies. Major shifts in isotopic patterns are, however, culturally-driven, which is particularly visible with the development and intensification of adapted agropastoral practices from 5500 - 5350 BCE and among the diet between different cultural groups. We conclude that socio-cultural diversity was the main driver of dietary habits and isotopic variability in early agropastoral societies of Neolithic Hungary.

Rapid and cyclic dust accumulation during MIS 2 in Central Asia inferred from loess OSL dating and grain-size analysis.

Project description:Due to lack of reliable proxies from the Westerlies-dominant region, the strength change of Northern Hemisphere Westerlies remains poorly understood. The aim of this study is to provide a reliable paleoclimatic proxy about the Northern Hemisphere Westerlies change. Here we report a 30.7 m thick loess section from the Ili basin directly controlled by the Westerlies. Based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and high resolution grain-size records, we reconstruct the change history of the Westerlies strength during the last glacial period (mainly Marine Isotope Stages 2, MIS2), being similar with the Westerlies index recorded in the Qinghai Lake sediments. Within error limits, all ages are in stratigraphic order. We further compare the climatic records among the Ili loess, Qinghai Lake and the NGRIP, their similarity shows a good climatic coupling relationship among the Central Asia, East Asia and the North Atlantic, and the Westerlies plays a critical influence in transporting the North Atlantic signal to Central and East Asia.

Maternal Lineages from 10-11th Century Commoner Cemeteries of the Carpathian Basin.

Project description:Nomadic groups of conquering Hungarians played a predominant role in Hungarian prehistory, but genetic data are available only from the immigrant elite strata. Most of the 10-11th century remains in the Carpathian Basin belong to common people, whose origin and relation to the immigrant elite have been widely debated. Mitogenome sequences were obtained from 202 individuals with next generation sequencing combined with hybridization capture. Median joining networks were used for phylogenetic analysis. The commoner population was compared to 87 ancient Eurasian populations with sequence-based (Fst) and haplogroup-based population genetic methods. The haplogroup composition of the commoner population markedly differs from that of the elite, and, in contrast to the elite, commoners cluster with European populations. Alongside this, detectable sub-haplogroup sharing indicates admixture between the elite and the commoners. The majority of the 10-11th century commoners most likely represent local populations of the Carpathian Basin, which admixed with the eastern immigrant groups (which included conquering Hungarians).

River networks and funerary metal in the Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin.

Project description:Archaeologists use differences in metals from burial contexts to identify variation in social inequalities during the European Bronze Age. Many have argued that these social inequalities depended on access to, and control of, trade routes. In this paper, I model critical gateways in the Tisza river-a river system in the Carpathian Basin that might have enabled privileged access to metal in some areas but not others. I then evaluate the concentration of metal on different topological nodes of the river network in an attempt to understand what best explains the distribution of metals across this landscape. I do this by describing Bronze Age metal consumption and display in cemeteries from four micro-regions of the Tisza, and compare them with network 'betweenness centrality' values for locations along the river. I find support for the argument that favourably located river nodes had better access to metal in the earlier part of the Bronze Age.

Ancient genomes reveal Avar-Hungarian transformations in the 9th-10th centuries CE Carpathian Basin.

Project description:During the Early Medieval period, the Carpathian Basin witnessed substantial demographic shifts, notably under the Avar dominance for ~250 years, followed by the settlement of early Hungarians in the region during the late 9th century CE. This study presents the genetic analysis of 296 ancient samples, including 103 shotgun-sequenced genomes, from present-day Western Hungary. By using identity-by-descent segment sharing networks, this research offers detailed insights into the population structure and dynamics of the region from the 5th to 11th centuries CE, with specific focus on certain microregions. Our evaluations reveal spatially different histories in Transdanubia even between communities in close geographical proximity, highlighting the importance of dense sampling and analyses. Our findings highlight extensive homogenization and reorganization processes, as well as discontinuities between Hun, Avar, and Hungarian conquest period immigrant groups, alongside the spread and integration of ancestry related to the Hungarian conquerors.

Multiple extreme environmental conditions of intermittent soda pans in the Carpathian Basin (Central Europe).

Project description:Soda lakes and pans represent saline ecosystems with unique chemical composition, occurring on all continents. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise the main environmental gradients and trophic state that prevail in the soda pans (n=84) of the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe. Underwater light conditions, dissolved organic matter, phosphorus and chlorophyll a were investigated in 84 pans during 2009-2010. Besides, water temperature was measured hourly with an automatic sensor throughout one year in a selected pan. The pans were very shallow (median depth: 15 cm), and their extremely high turbidity (Secchi depth median: 3 cm, min: 0.5 cm) was caused by high concentrations of inorganic suspended solids (median: 0.4 g L-1, max: 16 g L-1), which was the dominant (>50%) contributing factor to the vertical attenuation coefficient in 67 pans (80%). All pans were polyhumic (median DOC: 47 mg L-1), and total phosphorus concentration was also extremely high (median: 2 mg L-1, max: 32 mg L-1). The daily water temperature maximum (44 °C) and fluctuation maximum (28 °C) were extremely high during summertime. The combination of environmental boundaries: shallowness, daily water temperature fluctuation, intermittent hydroperiod, high turbidity, polyhumic organic carbon concentration, high alkalinity and hypertrophy represent a unique extreme aquatic ecosystem.

A dataset of calcareous nannoplankton and smaller benthic foraminifera from a middle Eocene nummulitic accumulation (Transylvanian Basin, Romania).

Project description:The dataset presents quantitative information on the taxa distribution of calcareous nannoplankton and smaller benthic foraminifera retrieved from the nummulitic accumulation in the Transylvanian Basin (Romania). Until now, only the larger benthic foraminifera and bryozoans were systematically studied, data on calcareous nannoplankton and smaller benthic foraminifera are scares. Our data comprise of quantitative information on the calcareous nannoplankton and smaller benthic foraminifera (raw individuals counts, relative abundance), diversity indices, benthic foraminifera dissolved oxygen index - BFOI and normalised data (ARCSIN values) used for clustering and principal component analysis. These data provide information on paleoenvironmental changes in the north-western part of the Transylvanian Basin during the middle Eocene (Bartonian) and can be used in any comparative study on the reconstruction and paleoenvironmental interpretation of the nummulitic carbonate reservoirs from Tethyan regions. The present data article is associated with the research paper "In the shadow of giants: Calcareous nannoplankton and smaller benthic foraminifera from an Eocene nummulitic accumulation (Transylvanian Basin, Romania)" by Bindiu-Haitonic et al. 2021 [1].
