Optically active quantum dots with induced circularly polarized luminescence in amphiphilic peptide dendron hydrogel.

ABSTRACT: In this study, water-soluble semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) showing induced circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in an organic-inorganic coassembled hydrogel were demonstrated. Achiral QDs could be encapsulated into a chiral peptide dendron hydrogel through cogelation. These cogels displayed intense induced circularly polarized emission. In addition, the direction of the CPL property of QD cogels could be regulated by the supramolecular chirality of hydrogels. Our findings reveal that the emergence of CPL achiral QDs can be triggered by the chirality transfer in a multiple-component dendron hydrogel system. This study has given a new understanding into the design of functional chiroptical materials.

Ligand induced circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence in CdSe quantum dots.

Project description:Chiral thiol capping ligands L- and D-cysteines induced modular chiroptical properties in achiral cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs). Cys-CdSe prepared from achiral oleic acid capped CdSe by postsynthetic ligand exchange displayed size-dependent electronic circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Opposite CPL signals were measured for the CdSe QDs capped with D- and L-cysteine. The CD profile and CD anisotropy varied with size of CdSe nanocrystals with largest anisotropy observed for CdSe nanoparticles of 4.4 nm. Magic angle spinning solid state NMR (MAS ssNMR) experiments suggested bidentate interaction between cysteine and the surface of CdSe. Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations verified that attachment of L- and D-cysteine to the surface of model (CdSe)13 nanoclusters induces measurable opposite CD signals for the exitonic band of the nanocluster. The origin of the induced chirality is consistent with the hybridization of highest occupied CdSe molecular orbitals with those of the chiral ligand.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence Without External Magnetic Fields from Individual CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> Perovskite Quantum Dots.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs), the latest generation of the colloidal QD family, exhibit outstanding optical properties, which are now exploited as both classical and quantum light sources. Most of their rather exceptional properties are related to the peculiar exciton fine-structure of band-edge states, which can support unique bright triplet excitons. The degeneracy of the bright triplet excitons is lifted with energetic splitting in the order of millielectronvolts, which can be resolved by the photoluminescence (PL) measurements of single QDs at cryogenic temperatures. Each bright exciton fine-structure-state (FSS) exhibits a dominantly linear polarization, in line with several theoretical models based on the sole crystal field, exchange interaction, and shape anisotropy. Here, we show that in addition to a high degree of linear polarization, the individual exciton FSS can exhibit a non-negligible degree of circular polarization even without external magnetic fields by investigating the four Stokes parameters of the exciton fine-structure in individual CsPbBr3 QDs through Stokes polarimetric measurements. We observe a degree of circular polarization up to ∼38%, which could not be detected by using the conventional polarimetric technique. In addition, we found a consistent transition from left- to right-hand circular polarization within the fine-structure triplet manifold, which was observed in magnetic-field-dependent experiments. Our optical investigation provides deeper insights into the nature of the exciton fine structures and thereby drives the yet-incomplete understanding of the unique photophysical properties of this class of QDs for the benefit of future applications in chiral quantum optics.

Thermo-responsive circularly polarized luminescence from carbon quantum dots in a cellulose-based chiral nematic template.

Project description:Circularly polarized light emitting active materials are of great interest, and the convenient tuning of the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) remains a significant challenge. Integrating fluorescent materials into chiral photonic crystals to achieve tunable CPL is a promising approach, allowing efficient manipulation of CPL by adjusting the photonic band gap (PBG). We combined carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), which self-assembles into a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC). The helical structure can selectively reflect right circularly polarized (RCP) light, achieving strong circular dichroism (CD) and high CPL dissymmetry factor g lum. In addition, the chiral template is thermo-responsive. The CPL wavelength can be adjusted by regulating the PBG position through temperature adjustment, while the chirality of CPL keeps high especially in the heating process. This work enables stimuli-responsive manipulation of CPL under one template through temperature regulation, which may open up enormous possibilities for the cellulose-based material in different areas.

Circularly polarized laser emission in optically active organic dye solutions.

Project description:The generation of circularly polarized laser emission (CPLE) in photonic devices has attracted increasing attention due to the prospects of using CP light in displaying technologies or advanced microscopies. Organic systems excel as laser materials across the whole visible spectrum, and despite many of them displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), none have been shown thus far to amplify their own CPL, let alone generate CPLE. Consequently, there is still a need to find alternative CPLE organic devices. Herein we demonstrate an effective strategy for achieving strong levels of CPLE (|glum| ∼ 0.1-0.2) by using solutions of an achiral dye dissolved in optically active solvents to exploit the full potential of the dynamic birefringence induced by the intense and polarized laser pumping. The present approach enables changing the CPLE handedness by changing the handedness of the solvent optical activity, opening new avenues for developing cost-effective and easily processable chiro-photonic materials.

Circularly polarized luminescence from organic micro-/nano-structures.

Project description:Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Endowing single-crystal polymers with circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:The preparation of single-crystal polymers with circularly polarized luminesce (CPL) remains a challenging task in chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the single-crystal-to-single-crystal topochemical photopolymerization of a chiral organic salt to achieve this goal. The in-situ reaction of 1,4-bis((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)benzene (1) with chiral (+)- or (-)-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) gives the monomer crystal 1[( + )/( - )-CSA]2 showing yellow CPL with a high luminescent dissymmetry factor |glum| of 0.035 and emission quantum yield Φ of 49.7%. Upon photo-induced topochemical [2 + 2] polymerization, single-crystal polyionic polymers of poly-1[( + )/( - )-CSA]2 are obtained. The single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) photopolymerization is revealed by in situ powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray, optical microscopy, infrared, circular dichroism, and CPL spectroscopic analyzes. Interestingly, the photopolymer crystals show blue and handedness-inverted CPL with |glum| of 0.011 (Φ = 14.2%), with respect to the yellow CPL of the monomer crystal. Furthermore, patterned circularly-polarized photonic heterojunctions with alternate blue and yellow CPL sub-blocks are prepared by a mask-assisted photopolymerization method. Our findings provide a vision for fabricating high-performance CPL-active crystalline polymer materials, paving the way for the further development of photo-response chiral systems.

A [2]Rotaxane-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescence Switch.

Project description:A rotaxane-based molecular shuttle has been synthesized in which the switching of the position of a fluorescent macrocycle on the thread turns "on" or "off" the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of the system while maintaining similar fluorescence profiles and quantum yields in both states. The chiroptical activity relies on the chiral information transfer from an ammonium salt incorporating d- or l-phenylalanine residues as chiral stereogenic covalent units to an otherwise achiral crown ether macrocycle bearing a luminescent 2,2'-bipyrene unit when they interact through hydrogen bonding. Each enantiomeric thread induces CPL responses of opposite signs on the macrocycle. Upon addition of base, the switching of the position of the macrocycle to a triazolium group disables the chiral information transfer to the macrocycle, switching "off" the CPL response. The in situ switching upon several acid/base cycles is also demonstrated.

Pivotal role of transition density in circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Realizing high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials remains a big challenge, which necessitates understanding systematically how their molecular structure controls the CPL. Here we investigate representative organic chiral emitters with different transition density distributions and reveal the pivotal role of transition density in CPL. We rationalize that to obtain large g-factors, two conditions should be simultaneously satisfied: (i) the transition density for the S1 (or T1)-to-S0 emission must be delocalized over the entire chromophore; and (ii) the chromophore inter-segment twisting must be restricted and tuned to an optimal value (∼50°). Our findings offer molecular-level insights into the CPL of organic emitters, with potential applications in the design of chiroptical materials and systems with strong CPL effects.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in a Mobius Helicene Carbon Nanohoop.

Project description:We present the first helicene carbon nanoohop that integrates a [6]helicene into [7]cycloparaphenylene. The [6]helicene endows the helicene carbon nanohoop with chiroptical properties and configurational stability typical for higher helicenes, while the radially conjugated seven para-phenylenes largely determine the optoelectronic properties. The structure of the helicene carbon nanoohop was unambiguously characterized by NMR, MS and X-ray analysis that revealed that it possesses a topology of a Möbius strip in the solid state and in solution. The chirality transfers from the [6]helicene to the para-phenylenes and leads to a pronounced circular dichroism and bright circularly polarized luminescence, which is affected by the structural topology of the nanohoop.

Highly contorted superhelicene hits near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Herein we describe a novel superhelicene structure consisting of three hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) units arranged in a helical geometry and creating two carbo[5]helicenes and a carbo[7]helicene. The central HBC bears a tropone moiety, which induces a saddle-helix hybrid geometry into the 3D structure of the prepared nanographene. The introduction of multiple helicenes and the position of the tropone unit trigger near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence (NIR-CPL, up to 850 nm, |g lum| = 3.0 × 10-3) combined with good photoluminescence quantum yields (ϕ F = 0.43) and upconverted emission based on two-photon absorption (TPA). Compared to previously reported superhelicenes of similar size, higher quantum yields, CPL brightness, and red-shifted absorption and emission spectra are achieved. Besides, chiroptical properties of enantiopure thin films were evaluated. These findings place this novel superhelicene as the first NIR-CPL superhelicene ever reported and make it a promising candidate for use as a chiral luminescent material in optoelectronic devices.
