A dataset of hourly sea surface temperature from drifting buoys.

ABSTRACT: A dataset of sea surface temperature (SST) estimates is generated from the temperature observations of surface drifting buoys of NOAA's Global Drifter Program. Estimates of SST at regular hourly time steps along drifter trajectories are obtained by fitting to observations a mathematical model representing simultaneously SST diurnal variability with three harmonics of the daily frequency, and SST low-frequency variability with a first degree polynomial. Subsequent estimates of non-diurnal SST, diurnal SST anomalies, and total SST as their sum, are provided with their respective standard uncertainties. This Lagrangian SST dataset has been developed to match the existing and on-going hourly dataset of position and velocity from the Global Drifter Program.

Sea spray aerosol concentration modulated by sea surface temperature.

Project description:Natural aerosols in pristine regions form the baseline used to evaluate the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on climate. Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is a major component of natural aerosols. Despite its importance, the abundance of SSA is poorly constrained. It is generally accepted that wind-driven wave breaking is the principle governing SSA production. This mechanism alone, however, is insufficient to explain the variability of SSA concentration at given wind speed. The role of other parameters, such as sea surface temperature (SST), remains controversial. Here, we show that higher SST promotes SSA mass generation at a wide range of wind speed levels over the remote Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, in addition to demonstrating the wind-driven SSA production mechanism. The results are from a global scale dataset of airborne SSA measurements at 150 to 200 m above the ocean surface during the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission. Statistical analysis suggests that accounting for SST greatly enhances the predictability of the observed SSA concentration compared to using wind speed alone. Our results support implementing SST into SSA source functions in global models to better understand the atmospheric burdens of SSA.

Uncovering marine connectivity through sea surface temperature.

Project description:A foundational paradigm in marine ecology is that Oceans are divided into distinct ecoregions demarking unique assemblages of species where the characteristics of water masses, and quantity and quality of environmental resources are generally similar. In most of the world Ocean, defining these ecoregions is complicated by data sparseness away of coastal areas and by the large-scale dispersal potential of ocean currents. Furthermore, ocean currents and water characteristics change in space and time on scales pertinent to the transitions of biological communities, and predictions of community susceptibility to these changes remain elusive. Given recent advances in data availability from satellite observations that are indirectly related to ocean currents, we are now poised to define ecoregions that meaningfully delimit marine biological communities based on their connectivity and to follow their evolution over time. Through a time-dependent complex network framework applied to a thirty-year long dataset of sea surface temperatures over the Mediterranean Sea, we provide compelling evidence that ocean ecoregionalization based on connectivity can be achieved at spatial and time scales relevant to conservation management and planning.

Global spatiotemporally continuous MODIS land surface temperature dataset.

Project description:Land surface temperature (LST) plays a critical role in land surface processes. However, as one of the effective means for obtaining global LST observations, remote sensing observations are inherently affected by cloud cover, resulting in varying degrees of missing data in satellite-derived LST products. Here, we propose a solution. First, the data interpolating empirical orthogonal functions (DINEOF) method is used to reconstruct invalid LSTs in cloud-contaminated areas into ideal, clear-sky LSTs. Then, a cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching-based method is developed to correct the ideal, clear-sky LSTs to the real LSTs. Experimental results prove that this method can effectively reconstruct missing LST data and guarantee acceptable accuracy in most regions of the world, with RMSEs of 1-2 K and R values of 0.820-0.996 under ideal, clear-sky conditions and RMSEs of 4-7 K and R values of 0.811-0.933 under all weather conditions. Finally, a spatiotemporally continuous MODIS LST dataset at 0.05° latitude/longitude grids is produced based on the above method.

Sea ice drift tracks from autonomous buoys in the MOSAiC Distributed Network.

Project description:A network of autonomous, ice-tethered buoys was deployed around the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) experiment in late September 2019 for a year-long drift in the Arctic Transpolar Drift Stream. The buoys were deployed as part of the MOSAiC distributed network (DN) which included 12 multi-instrumented ice stations and an additional 116 GPS buoys distributed primarily within a 40 km radius of the MOSAiC Central Observatory. Buoy coverage within the DN was maintained with additional deployments throughout the year-long drift allowing for collection of data over a full sea ice growth and melt cycle. All GPS position data from buoys deployed within the DN have been assembled and processed into the collection of 216 quality-controlled buoy drift tracks presented in this dataset covering the period 26 September 2019 - 23 May 2021. The drift tracks in this collection are ideal for studies of dynamic sea ice motion around the MOSAiC experiment at cascading spatial scales ranging from 100s of meters to 100s of km.

Decadal trends in Red Sea maximum surface temperature.

Project description:Ocean warming is a major consequence of climate change, with the surface of the ocean having warmed by 0.11 °C decade-1 over the last 50 years and is estimated to continue to warm by an additional 0.6 - 2.0 °C before the end of the century1. However, there is considerable variability in the rates experienced by different ocean regions, so understanding regional trends is important to inform on possible stresses for marine organisms, particularly in warm seas where organisms may be already operating in the high end of their thermal tolerance. Although the Red Sea is one of the warmest ecosystems on earth, its historical warming trends and thermal evolution remain largely understudied. We characterized the Red Sea's thermal regimes at the basin scale, with a focus on the spatial distribution and changes over time of sea surface temperature maxima, using remotely sensed sea surface temperature data from 1982 - 2015. The overall rate of warming for the Red Sea is 0.17 ± 0.07 °C decade-1, while the northern Red Sea is warming between 0.40 and 0.45 °C decade-1, all exceeding the global rate. Our findings show that the Red Sea is fast warming, which may in the future challenge its organisms and communities.

Worldwide continuous gap-filled MODIS land surface temperature dataset.

Project description:Satellite land surface temperature (LST) is vital for climatological and environmental studies. However, LST datasets are not continuous in time and space mainly due to cloud cover. Here we combine LST with Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) modeled temperatures to derive a continuous gap filled global LST dataset at a spatial resolution of 1 km. Temporal Fourier analysis is used to derive the seasonality (climatology) on a pixel-by-pixel basis, for LST and CFSv2 temperatures. Gaps are filled by adding the CFSv2 temperature anomaly to climatological LST. The accuracy is evaluated in nine regions across the globe using cloud-free LST (mean values: R2 = 0.93, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 2.7 °C, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) = 2.1 °C). The provided dataset contains day, night, and daily mean LST for the Eastern Mediterranean. We provide a Google Earth Engine code and a web app that generates gap filled LST in any part of the world, alongside a pixel-based evaluation of the data in terms of MAE, RMSE and Pearson's r.

A DBULSTM-Adaboost Model for Sea Surface Temperature Prediction.

Project description:Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important parameter to measure the energy and heat balance of sea surface. The change of sea surface temperature has an important impact on the marine ecosystem, marine climate and marine environment. Therefore, sea surface temperature prediction has become an significant research direction in the field of ocean. This article proposes a DBULSTM-Adaboost model based on ensemble learning. The model is composed of Deep Bidirectional and Unidirectional Long Short Term Memory (DBULSTM) and Adaboost strong learner. DBULSTM can capture the forward and backward dependence of time series, and the DBULSTM model is integrated with Adaboost strong learner to reduce the variance and bias of prediction and realize the short and medium term prediction of SST at a single point scale. Experimental results show that the model can improve the accuracy and stability of SST prediction. Experiments on the East China Sea and South China Sea with different prediction lengths show that the model is almost superior to other classical models in different sea areas and at different prediction levels. Compared with full-connected LSTM (FC-LSTM) model, the root-mean-square error is reduced by about 0.1.

Terrestrial basking sea turtles are responding to spatio-temporal sea surface temperature patterns.

Project description:Naturalists as early as Darwin observed terrestrial basking in green turtles (Chelonia mydas), but the distribution and environmental influences of this behaviour are poorly understood. Here, we examined 6 years of daily basking surveys in Hawaii and compared them with the phenology of local sea surface temperatures (SST). Data and models indicated basking peaks when SST is coolest, and we found this timeline consistent with bone stress markings. Next, we assessed the decadal SST profiles for the 11 global green turtle populations. Basking generally occurs when winter SST falls below 23°C. From 1990 to 2014, the SST for these populations warmed an average 0.04°C yr(-1) (range 0.01-0.09°C yr(-1)); roughly three times the observed global average over this period. Owing to projected future warming at basking sites, we estimated terrestrial basking in green turtles may cease globally by 2100. To predict and manage for future climate change, we encourage a more detailed understanding for how climate influences organismal biology.

Antarctic daily mesoscale air temperature dataset derived from MODIS land and ice surface temperature.

Project description:Knowledge about local air temperature variations and extremes in Antarctica is of large interest to many polar disciplines such as climatology, glaciology, hydrology, and ecology and it is a key variable to understand climate change. Due to the remote and harsh conditions of Antarctica's environment, the distribution of air temperature observations from Automatic Weather Stations is notably sparse across the region. Previous studies have shown that satellite-derived land and ice surface temperatures can be used as a suitable proxy for air temperature. Here, we developed a daily near-surface air temperature dataset, AntAir ICE for terrestrial Antarctica and the surrounding ice shelves by modelling air temperature from MODIS skin temperature for the period 2003 to 2021 using a linear model. AntAir ICE has a daily temporal resolution and a gridded spatial resolution of 1 km2. AntAir ICE has a higher accuracy in reproducing in-situ measured air temperature when compared with the well-established climate re-analysis model ERA5 and a higher spatial resolution which highlights its potential for monitoring temperature patterns in Antarctica.

Tropical cyclone rainfall area controlled by relative sea surface temperature.

Project description:Tropical cyclone rainfall rates have been projected to increase in a warmer climate. The area coverage of tropical cyclones influences their impact on human lives, yet little is known about how tropical cyclone rainfall area will change in the future. Here, using satellite data and global atmospheric model simulations, we show that tropical cyclone rainfall area is controlled primarily by its environmental sea surface temperature (SST) relative to the tropical mean SST (that is, the relative SST), while rainfall rate increases with increasing absolute SST. Our result is consistent with previous numerical simulations that indicated tight relationships between tropical cyclone size and mid-tropospheric relative humidity. Global statistics of tropical cyclone rainfall area are not expected to change markedly under a warmer climate provided that SST change is relatively uniform, implying that increases in total rainfall will be confined to similar size domains with higher rainfall rates.
