Material Properties of Traditional Handmade Paper Samples Fabricated from Cellulosic Fiber of Lokta Bushes.

ABSTRACT: Handmade papers (HPs) are fabricated from fibrous biomass of Lokta bushes and other plant species following traditional eco-friendly method in Nepal. Although HP fabricated from Lokta bushes is believed to be durable and resistant to bugs and molds, material properties of this paper are not reported in literature. In this study, we measured several material properties of 10 handmade Lokta paper samples collected from local enterprises and paper industries. The mean caliper, grammage, apparent density, equilibrium moisture content, Cobb 60, brightness, opacity, tensile strength, and tensile index values in the paper samples ranged from ∼90 to 700 μm, 50 to 150 g/m², 0.2 to 0.4 g/cm³, 4 to 7%, 50 to 400 g/m², 56 to 67%, 83 to 98%, 30 to 2900 N/m, and 1 to 27 Nm/g, respectively. These properties suggested that the HPs are lightweight papers with intermediate to high strength. The tensile strength was found to be significantly higher along the length direction (p < 0.05). Characteristic features of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were observed in FTIR spectra. The crystalline and amorphous phases were also identified in X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Electron microscopy images revealed a nicely cross-linked network of intact fibers having almost parallel arrangement of microfibrils. These features could provide strength and durability to the paper samples. Understanding the material properties of HPs down to the sub-microscopic level may help improve the paper quality and find novel applications in the future.

Project description:Among bio-based reinforcement additives for paper existing on the market, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) turned out to be a promising material, showing outstanding potential in composites science. Its relevance in papermaking as a new family of paper components was suggested more recently. There remains a number of constraints limiting the promotion of their use in papermaking, mostly related to their high cost and effect on dewatering resistance. Also, contrasting results reported in the literature suggest that the effect of fibrillation rate and quantity of such cellulosic additives in a furnish on the technological paper properties needs further research. The purpose of this study is to produce and characterize different MFC-like fine fibrous materials of varying particle size and degree of fibrillation from the same batch of pulp through mechanical treatment or fractionation. The effect of the thus obtained fine fibrous materials on paper properties is evaluated with respect to their concentration within a fiber furnish. We compared: (i) a mixture of primary and secondary fines isolated from the pulp by means of a purpose-built laboratory pressure screen; (ii) MFC-like fine fibrous materials of increasingly fibrillar character obtained by refining and subsequent steps of high-pressure homogenization. The morphology of the different materials was first characterized using flow cell based and microscopic techniques. The thus obtained materials were then applied in handsheet forming in blends of different proportions to evaluate their influence on paper properties. The results of these experiments indicate that all these products lead to a substantial decrease in air permeability and to improved mechanical properties already at low concentration, independent of the type and morphological character of the added fine cellulosic material. At higher addition rates, only highly fibrillated materials allowed a further considerable increase in tensile and z-strength. These observations should help to allow a more targeted application of this new generation of materials in papermaking, depending on the desired application.

Project description:Additive manufacturing (AM) nowadays has become a supportive method of traditional manufacturing. In particular, the medical and healthcare industry can profit from these developments in terms of personalized design and batches ranging from one to five specimens overall. In terms of polymers, polyolefins are always an interesting topic due to their low prices, inert chemistry, and crystalline structure resulting in preferable mechanical properties. Their semi-crystalline nature has some advantages but are challenging for AM due to their shrinkage and warping, resulting in geometrical inaccuracies or even layer detaching during the process. To tackle these issues, process parameter optimization is vital, with one important parameter to be studied more in detail, the print envelope temperature. It is well known that higher print envelope temperatures lead to better layer adhesion overall, but this investigation focuses on the mechanical properties and resulting morphology of a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyolefin. Further, two different AM technologies, namely material jetting (ARBURG plastic freeforming-APF) and filament-based material extrusion, were studied and compared in detail. It was shown that higher print envelope temperatures lead to more isotropic behavior based on an evenly distributed morphology but results in geometrical inaccuracies since the material is kept in a molten state during printing. This phenomenon especially could be seen in the stress and strain values at break at high elongations. Furthermore, a different crystal structure can be achieved by setting a specific temperature and printing time, also resulting in peak values of certain mechanical properties. In comparison, better results could be archived by the APF technology in terms of mechanical properties and homogeneous morphology. Nevertheless, real isotropic part behavior could not be managed which was shown by the specimen printed vertically. Hence, a sweet spot between geometrical and mechanical properties still has to be found.
