Magnetic dynamics of hedgehog in icosahedral quasicrystal.

ABSTRACT: Quasicrystals (QCs) possess a unique lattice structure without translational invariance, which is characterized by the rotational symmetry forbidden in periodic crystals such as the 5-fold rotation. Recent discovery of the ferromagnetic (FM) long-range order in the terbium-based QC has brought about breakthrough but the magnetic structure and dynamics remain unresolved. Here, we reveal the dynamical as well as static structure of the FM hedgehog state in the icosahedral QC. The FM hedgehog is shown to be characterized by the triple-Q state in the reciprocal-lattice [Formula: see text] space. Dynamical structure factor is shown to exhibit highly structured [Formula: see text] and energy dependences. We find a unique magnetic excitation mode along the 5-fold direction exhibiting the streak fine structure in the [Formula: see text]-energy plane, which is characteristic of the hedgehog in the icosahedral QC. Non-reciprocal magnetic excitations are shown to arise from the FM hedgehog order, which emerge in the vast extent of the [Formula: see text]-energy plane.

Magnetic dynamics of ferromagnetic long range order in icosahedral quasicrystal.

Project description:Quasicrystals lack translational symmetry and have unique lattice structures with rotational symmetry forbidden in periodic crystals. The electric state and physical property are far from complete understanding, which are the frontiers of modern matter physics. Recent discovery of the ferromagnetic long-range order in the rare-earth based icosahedral quasicrystal has made the breakthrough. Here, we first reveal the dynamical as well as static magnetic structure in the ferromagnetic long-range order in the terbium-based quasicrystal. The dynamical structure factor exhibits highly structured energy and wavenumber dependences beyond the crystalline-electric-field excitation. We find the presence of the magnetic excitation mode analog to magnon with unique hierarchical structure as well as the localized magnetic excitation with high degeneracy in the quasicrystal. Non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic structure on the icosahedron is discovered to give rise to non-reciprocal magnetic excitation in the quasicrystal as well as non-reciprocal magnon in the periodic cubic 1/1 approximant. These findings afford illuminating insight into the magnetic dynamics in the broad range of the rare-earth-based quasicrystals and approximants.

Magnetic dynamics and nonreciprocal excitation in uniform hedgehog order in icosahedral 1/1 approximant crystal.

Project description:The hedgehog state in the icosahedral quasicrystal (QC) has attracted great interest as the theoretical discovery of topological magnetic texture in aperiodic systems. The revealed magnetic dynamics exhibits nonreciprocal excitation in the vast extent of the reciprocal lattice [Formula: see text]-energy [Formula: see text] space, whose emergence mechanism remains unresolved. Here, we analyze the dynamical as well as static structure of the hedgehog order in the 1/1 approximant crystal (AC) composed of the cubic lattice with spatial inversion symmetry. We find that the dispersion of the magnetic excitation energy exhibits nonreciprocal feature along the N-P-[Formula: see text] line in the [Formula: see text] space. The dynamical structure factor exhibits highly structured intensities where high intensities appear in the high-energy branches along the [Formula: see text]-H line and the P-[Formula: see text]-N line in the [Formula: see text] space. The nonreciprocity in the 1/1 AC and also in the QC is understood to be ascribed to inversion symmetry breaking by the hedgehog ordering. The sharp contrast on the emergence regime of nonreciprocal magnetic excitation between the QC and the 1/1 AC indicates that the emergence in the vast [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] regime in the QC is attributed to the QC lattice structure.

Magnetism and topology in Tb-based icosahedral quasicrystal.

Project description:Quasicrystal (QC) possesses a unique lattice structure with rotational symmetry forbidden in conventional crystals. The electric property is far from complete understanding and it has been a long-standing issue whether the magnetic long-range order is realized in the QC. The main difficulty was lack of microscopic theory to analyze the effect of the crystalline electric field (CEF) at the rare-earth atom in QCs. Here we show the full microscopic analysis of the CEF in Tb-based QCs. We find that magnetic anisotropy arising from the CEF plays a key role in realizing unique magnetic textures on the icosahedron whose vertices Tb atoms are located at. Our analysis of the minimal model based on the magnetic anisotropy suggests that the long-range order of the hedgehog characterized by the topological charge of one is stabilized in the Tb-based QC. We also find that the whirling-moment state is characterized by unusually large topological charge of three. The magnetic textures as well as the topological states are shown to be switched by controlling compositions of the non-rare-earth elements in the ternary compounds. Our model is useful to understand the magnetism as well as the topological property in the rare-earth-based QCs and approximant crystals.

Atomic structure and phason modes of the Sc-Zn icosahedral quasicrystal.

Project description:The detailed atomic structure of the binary icosahedral (i) ScZn7.33 quasicrystal has been investigated by means of high-resolution synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and absolute scale measurements of diffuse scattering. The average atomic structure has been solved using the measured Bragg intensity data based on a six-dimensional model that is isostructural to the i-YbCd5.7 one. The structure is described with a quasiperiodic packing of large Tsai-type rhombic triacontahedron clusters and double Friauf polyhedra (DFP), both resulting from a close-packing of a large (Sc) and a small (Zn) atom. The difference in chemical composition between i-ScZn7.33 and i-YbCd5.7 was found to lie in the icosahedron shell and the DFP where in i-ScZn7.33 chemical disorder occurs on the large atom sites, which induces a significant distortion to the structure units. The intensity in reciprocal space displays a substantial amount of diffuse scattering with anisotropic distribution, located around the strong Bragg peaks, that can be fully interpreted as resulting from phason fluctuations, with a ratio of the phason elastic constants K 2/K 1 = -0.53, i.e. close to a threefold instability limit. This induces a relatively large perpendicular (or phason) Debye-Waller factor, which explains the vanishing of 'high-Q perp' reflections.

New building blocks in the 2/1 crystalline approximant of a Bergman-type icosahedral quasicrystal.

Project description:The refined x-ray crystal structure of the phase Mg(27)Al(10.7(2))Zn(47.3(2)) (Pa3) establishes it as the new 2/1 Bergman-type approximant of the icosahedral quasicrystal. The primitive cubic lattice consists of condensed triacontahedral and novel prolate rhombohedral (PR) clusters. Each triacontahedron encapsulates the traditional, multiply endohedral Bergman-type clusters, and each PR encapsulates an Al(2) dimer. This phase exhibits the same long-range order as recently established for the Tsai-type Sc-Mg-Zn 2/1 approximant crystal, with substantial geometric and atomic distribution differences between the two only in the short range orders. This common feature suggests that Bergman- and Tsai-type quasicrystals may be more similar than earlier conceived. Factors germane to the formation of, and the differences between, Bergman- vs. Tsai-type 1/1 and 2/1 approximate structures are considered, including notably different distributions of the more electropositive elements.

Icosahedral AlCuFe quasicrystal at high pressure and temperature and its implications for the stability of icosahedrite.

Project description:The first natural-occurring quasicrystal, icosahedrite, was recently discovered in the Khatyrka meteorite, a new CV3 carbonaceous chondrite. Its finding raised fundamental questions regarding the effects of pressure and temperature on the kinetic and thermodynamic stability of the quasicrystal structure relative to possible isochemical crystalline or amorphous phases. Although several studies showed the stability at ambient temperature of synthetic icosahedral AlCuFe up to ~35 GPa, the simultaneous effect of temperature and pressure relevant for the formation of icosahedrite has been never investigated so far. Here we present in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on synthetic icosahedral AlCuFe using multianvil device to explore possible temperature-induced phase transformations at pressures of 5 GPa and temperature up to 1773 K. Results show the structural stability of i-AlCuFe phase with a negligible effect of pressure on the volumetric thermal expansion properties. In addition, the structural analysis of the recovered sample excludes the transformation of AlCuFe quasicrystalline phase to possible approximant phases, which is in contrast with previous predictions at ambient pressure. Results from this study extend our knowledge on the stability of icosahedral AlCuFe at higher temperature and pressure than previously examined, and provide a new constraint on the stability of icosahedrite.

The atomic structure of the Bergman-type icosahedral quasicrystal based on the Ammann-Kramer-Neri tiling.

Project description:In this study, the atomic structure of the ternary icosahedral ZnMgTm quasicrystal (QC) is investigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure is found to be a member of the Bergman QC family, frequently found in Zn-Mg-rare-earth systems. The ab initio structure solution was obtained by the use of the Superflip software. The infinite structure model was founded on the atomic decoration of two golden rhombohedra, with an edge length of 21.7 Å, constituting the Ammann-Kramer-Neri tiling. The refined structure converged well with the experimental diffraction diagram, with the crystallographic R factor equal to 9.8%. The Bergman clusters were found to be bonded by four possible linkages. Only two linkages, b and c, are detected in approximant crystals and are employed to model the icosahedral QCs in the cluster approach known for the CdYb Tsai-type QC. Additional short b and a linkages are found in this study. Short interatomic distances are not generated by those linkages due to the systematic absence of atoms and the formation of split atomic positions. The presence of four linkages allows the structure to be pictured as a complete covering by rhombic triacontahedral clusters and consequently there is no need to define the interstitial part of the structure (i.e. that outside the cluster). The 6D embedding of the solved structure is discussed for the final verification of the model.

Magnetic properties of quenched binary and ternary quasicrystal approximants.

Project description:The magnetic properties of binary Gd-Cd and ternary Gd-Au-Ge crystals obtained from the newly introduced low-melt peritectic formation (LMPF) synthesis method were investigated. This method consists of a rapid quenching of the metallic melt followed by an annealing treatment at a relevant temperature. In the first system, both quasicrystal (QC) and approximant crystal (AC) phases can be stabilized, whereas only the AC phase is obtainable in the pseudo-binary Gd-(Au-Ge) system. The magnetic properties of the crystals obtained from LMPF for each system are compared to those of larger single grain crystals obtained from the self-flux (SF) method.

Field-induced magnetic phases in a qubit Penrose quasicrystal.

Project description:Unveiling the fundamental dynamics of naturally or artificially formed magnetic quasicrystals in the presence of an external magnetic field remains a difficult problem that may have implications for the design of information processing devices. By embedding a qubit magnetic Penrose quasicrystal into a quantum annealer, we were able to reproduce the formation of magnetic phases driven by specific physical parameter selections, allowing us to distinguish a wide range of frustrated magnetic configurations at the single-spin scale. In our experiments, we observe some spins dynamically activate, while others remain static, all within an average magnetization space defined by competing structural and magnetic degrees of freedom. Static spin structure factors reveal ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic modulations that are compatible with a variety of spin textures. This research demonstrates that introducing structural aperiodicity in magnetic devices that exploit spin degeneracy in a single, richly intraconnected finite object can enable the engineering of quantum states in both the effective low-temperature and thermally excited regimes.

Experimental Observation of Long-Range Magnetic Order in Icosahedral Quasicrystals.

Project description:Quasicrystals (QCs), first discovered in 1984, generally do not exhibit long-range magnetic order. Here, we report on long-range magnetic order in the real icosahedral quasicrystals (i QCs) Au-Ga-Gd and Au-Ga-Tb. The Au65Ga20Gd15 i QC exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at TC = 23 K, manifested as a sharp anomaly in both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements, along with an appearance of magnetic Bragg peak below TC. This is the first observation of long-range magnetic order in a real quasicrystal, in contrast to the spin-glass-like behaviors observed for the other magnetic quasicrystals found to date. Moreover, when Gd is replaced by Tb, i.e., for the Au65Ga20Tb15 i QC, a ferromagnetic behavior is still retained with TC = 16 K. Although the sharp anomaly in the specific heat observed for the Au65Ga20Gd15 i QC becomes broadened upon Tb substitution, neutron diffraction experiments clearly show marked development of magnetic Bragg peaks just below TC, indicating long-range magnetic order for the Au65Ga20Tb15 i QC also. Our findings can contribute to the further investigation of exotic magnetic orders formed on real quasiperiodic lattices with unprecedented highest global symmetry, i.e., icosahedral symmetry.
