Dataset for the analysis of stock price responses to African Swine Fever Outbreaks in China.

ABSTRACT: The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks in China since 2018 caused a more than 100 million decline in its hog inventory. Leveraging publicly available announcements of ASF outbreaks and daily stock prices data from 25 major publicly listed hog companies from China and eight major hog exporting countries, we use the event study method to estimate firm-level abnormal stock price responses to China's ASF outbreak announcements for both Chinese and foreign hog companies. This article describes the data used in the research article "A Fortune from misfortune: Evidence from hog firms' stock price responses to China's African Swine Fever outbreaks" (Xiong et al., 2021). The daily stock price data in this article can be applied to other events that also occurred during the same sample period using a similar event study approach.

African Swine Fever Outbreaks in Lithuanian Domestic Pigs in 2019.

Project description:While numerous risk factors of African swine fever (ASF) transmission to domestic pigs have been described, ASF virus introduction has often not been traced back to one single defined cause. The large number of ASF outbreaks that occurred in domestic pigs in Lithuania from 2014 through to 2018 raised the question regarding whether outbreak-specific risk factors and transmission routes could be identified. Therefore, a prospective matched case-control study was designed. Data from 18 outbreaks that occurred in Lithuanian in 2019 and 36 control farms were analyzed. Conditional multivariable logistic regression showed that two or more visits by veterinary inspection of a farm had a significant preventive effect on the occurrence of ASF on a farm (Odds ratio (OR) 14.21, confidence interval (CI) 1.09-185.60 for farms not inspected vs. farms inspected twice or more a year), while certain practices (e.g., mushroom picking, sharing equipment, etc.), which might facilitate the indirect introduction of ASF from fields and forests into piggeries, significantly increased the odds of an outbreak (OR 5.18, CI 1.10-24.44). The results of the study highlight the importance of veterinary inspections for increasing the biosecurity level on pig farms and the awareness of ASF. The knowledge on potential protective and risk factors may help to improve the prevention and control of ASF outbreaks in domestic pig farms in Lithuania and other affected countries.

Molecular Characterization of African Swine Fever Virus From 2019-2020 Outbreaks in Guangxi Province, Southern China.

Project description:African swine fever virus (ASFV) causes contagious hemorrhagic disease of pigs with high morbidity and mortality. To identify the molecular characteristics of ASFV strains circulating in Guangxi province, southern China, a total of 336 tissue samples collected from 336 domestic pigs that died as a result of severe hemorrhagic disease during 2019-2020 were tested for ASFV. Furthermore, 66 ASFV strains were genetically characterized by sequence analysis of the C-terminal region of B646L (p72) gene, the complete E183L (p54) gene, the variable region of EP402R (CD2v) gene, the central variable region (CVR) of B602L gene, the full MGF505-2R gene, and the tandem repeat sequence (TRS) within intergenic region (IGR) between the I73R and I329L (I73R/I329L) genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the ASFV strains from Guangxi province belonged to genotypes I and II based on the B646L (p72) and E183L (p54) genes, and there were eight different tetrameric TRS variants based on the CVR of B602L gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the EP402R (CD2v) gene revealed that these ASFV strains belonged to serogroups 4 and 8. Eight of the 66 strains belonged to genotype I and serogroup 4, and showed deletion of whole MGF505-2R gene. The sequence analysis of the IGR between the I73R/I329L genes showed that IGR II and III variants were co-circulating in Guangxi province. The results indicated that ASFV strains circulating in Guangxi province during 2019-2020 outbreaks showed high genetic diversity, of which genotypes I and II, as well as serogroups 4 and 8, were simultaneously circulating in Guangxi province, and there existed wild-type and naturally gene-deleted strains in the field. This is the first detailed report on the molecular characterization of the ASFV strains circulating in southern China, and serogroup 4 in China.

Genome-Wide Diversity Analysis of African Swine Fever Virus Based on a Curated Dataset.

Project description:African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal contagious viral disease of domestic pigs and wild boars caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV). The pandemic spread of ASF has had serious effects on the global pig industry. Virus genome sequencing and comparison play an important role in tracking the outbreaks of the disease and tracing the transmission of the virus. Although more than 140 ASFV genome sequences have been deposited in the public databases, the genome-wide diversity of ASFV remains unclear. Here we prepared a curated dataset of ASFV genome sequences by filtering genomes with sequencing errors as well as duplicated genomes. A total of 123 ASFV genome sequences were included in the dataset, representing 10 genotypes collected between 1949 and 2020. Phylogenetic analysis based on whole-genome sequences provided high-resolution topology in differentiating closely related ASFV isolates, and drew new clues in the classification of some ASFV isolates. Genome-wide diversity of ASFV genomes was explored by pairwise sequence similarity comparison and ORF distribution comparison. Tandem repeat sequences were found widely distributed and highly varied in ASFV genomes. Structural variation and highly variable poly G or poly C tracts also contributed to the genome diversity. This study expanded our knowledge on the patterns of genetic diversity and evolution of ASFV, and provided valuable information for diagnosis improvement and vaccine development.

Project description:On August 3, 2018, an outbreak of African swine fever in pigs was reported in China. We subjected a virus from an African swine fever-positive pig sample to phylogenetic analysis. This analysis showed that the causative strain belonged to the p72 genotype II and CD2v serogroup 8.

Diagnosis and genotyping of African swine fever viruses from 2015 outbreaks in Zambia.

Project description:In early 2015, a highly fatal haemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs resembling African swine fever (ASF) occurred in North Western, Copperbelt, and Lusaka provinces of Zambia. Molecular diagnosis by polymerase chain reaction targeting specific amplification of p72 (B646L) gene of ASF virus (ASFV) was conducted. Fourteen out of 16 domestic pigs from the affected provinces were found to be positive for ASFV. Phylogenetic analyses based on part of the p72 and the complete p54 (E183L) genes revealed that all the ASFVs detected belonged to genotypes I and Id, respectively. Additionally, epidemiological data suggest that the same ASFV spread from Lusaka to other provinces possibly through uncontrolled and/or illegal pig movements. Although the origin of the ASFV that caused outbreaks in domestic pigs in Zambia could not be ascertained, it appears likely that the virus may have emerged from within the country or region, probably from a sylvatic cycle. It is recommended that surveillance of ASF, strict biosecurity, and quarantine measures be imposed in order to prevent further spread and emergence of new ASF outbreaks in Zambia.

Drivers, Risk Factors and Dynamics of African Swine Fever Outbreaks, Southern Highlands, Tanzania.

Project description:African swine fever remains an important pig disease globally in view of its rapid spread, economic impacts and food implications, with no option of vaccination or treatment. The Southern Highlands zone of Tanzania, an important pig-producing hub in East Africa, is endemic with African swine fever (ASF). From approximately the year 2010, the recurrence of outbreaks has been observed and it has now become a predictable pattern. We conducted exploratory participatory epidemiology and participatory disease surveillance in the Southern Highlands to understand the pig sector and the drivers and facilitators of infections, risk factors and dynamics of ASF in this important pig-producing area. Pigs continue to play a major role in rural livelihoods in the Southern Highlands and pork is a major animal protein source. Outbreaks of diseases, particularly ASF, have continued to militate against the scaling up of pig operations in the Southern Highlands. Intra- and inter-district and trans-border transnational outbreaks of ASF, the most common disease in the Southern Highlands, continue to occur. Trade and marketing systems, management systems, and lack of biosecurity, as well as anthropogenic (human) issues, animals and fomites, were identified as risk factors and facilitators of ASF infection. Changes in human behavior and communication in trade and marketing systems in the value chain, biosecurity and pig management practices are warranted. Relevant training must be implemented alongside the launch of the national ASF control strategy for Tanzania, which already established a roadmap for combating ASF in Tanzania. The high-risk points (slaughter slabs, border areas, and farms with poor biosecurity) and high-risk period (November-March) along the pig value chain must be targeted as critical control points for interventions in order to reduce the burden of infection.

Analysis of the Unique Historical Isolate of African Swine Fever Virus Isolate Spencer from Outbreaks in 1951.

Project description:African swine fever (ASF) is a deadly hemorrhagic disease of domestic and wild swine that was first described in the early 20th century after the introduction of European pigs to Kenya. The etiological agent, the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a large DNA virus within the Asfarviridae family that is broadly categorized epidemiologically into genotypes based on the nucleotide sequence of B646L, the gene encoding the major capsid protein p72. ASF outbreaks in Africa have been linked historically to 25 genotypes by p72 nucleotide analysis and, recently, to 6 genotypes by amino acid comparison, whereas global outbreaks of ASF outside of Africa have only been linked to 2 genotypes: genotype I, which led to an outbreak in Europe during the 1960s that later spread to South America, and genotype II, responsible for the current pandemic that began in Georgia in 2007 and has since spread to Europe, Asia, and Hispaniola. Here, we present an analysis of the genome of ASFV Spencer, an isolate that was collected in 1951 near Johannesburg, South Africa. While nucleotide analysis of Spencer indicates the p72 coding sequence is unique, differentiating from the closest reference by five nucleotides, the predicted amino acid sequence indicates that it is 100% homologous to contemporary genotype 1. Full genome analysis reveals it is more similar to Mkuzi1979 and encodes genes that share similarity with either genotype 1 or genotype 2 outbreak strains.

Identification and Isolation of Two Different Subpopulations Within African Swine Fever Virus Arm/07 Stock.

Project description:No efficient vaccines exist against African swine fever virus (ASFV), which causes a serious disease in wild boars and domestic pigs that produces great industrial and ecological concerns worldwide. An extensive genetic characterization of the original ASFV stocks used to produce live attenuated vaccine (LAV) prototypes is needed for vaccine biosecurity and control. Here, we sequenced for the first time the Arm/07 stock which was obtained from an infected pig during the Armenia outbreak in 2007, using an improved viral dsDNA purification method together with high coverage analysis. There was unexpected viral heterogeneity within the stock, with two genetically distinct ASFV subpopulations. The first, represented by the Arm/07/CBM/c2 clone, displayed high sequence identity to the updated genotype II Georgia 2007/1, whereas the second (exemplified by clone Arm/07/CBM/c4) displayed a hemadsorbing phenotype and grouped within genotype I based on a central region conserved among all members of this group. Intriguingly, Arm/07/CBM/c4 contained a unique EP402R sequence, produced by a single mutation in the N-terminal region. Importantly, Arm/07/CBM/c4 showed in vitro features of attenuated strains regarding innate immune response pathway. Both Arm/07/CBM/c2 and c4 represent well-characterized viral clones, useful for different molecular and virus-host interaction studies, including virulence studies and vaccine development.

African swine fever: an unprecedented disaster and challenge to China.

Project description:BackgroundAfrican swine fever (ASF), caused by African swine fever virus, is a hemorrhagic and often fatal disease of domestic pigs and wild boar, which is notifiable to the World Organization for Animal Health. On August 3, 2018, China reported the first outbreak of ASF in Shenyang, a northeastern city of China. As of October 8, a total of 33 ASF outbreaks were reported in eight provinces in China, the biggest pork producer and consumer in the world.Main bodyThis commentary summarizes the current situation of ASF in China, measures that China has taken to control the disease, lessons learnt from other countries, challenges and recommendations on ASF control in China, and possible international collaborations on ASF.ConclusionsASF is an unprecedented disaster and challenge to the Chinese swine industry. It will be a formidable and protracted campaign to control ASF in China, which requires joint participation and coordination of stakeholders and agencies at different levels.

Google trends as an early indicator of African swine fever outbreaks in Southeast Asia.

Project description:African Swine Fever (ASF) is a reportable disease of swine that causes far-reaching losses to affected countries and regions. Early detection is critically important to contain and mitigate the impact of ASF outbreaks, for which timely available data is essential. This research examines the potential use of Google Trends data as an early indicator of ASF outbreaks in Southeast Asia, focusing on the three largest swine producing countries, namely, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. Cross-correlation and Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence indicators were used to evaluate the association between Google search trends and the number of ASF outbreaks reported. Our analysis indicate strong and moderate correlations between Google search trends and number of ASF outbreaks reported in Vietnam and the Philippines, respectively. In contrast, Thailand, the country of this group in which outbreaks were reported last, exhibits the weakest correlation (KL = 2.64), highlighting variations in public awareness and disease dynamics. These findings suggest that Google search trends are valuable for early detection of ASF. As the disease becomes endemic, integrating trends with other epidemiological data may support the design and implementation of surveillance strategies for transboundary animal diseases in Southeast Asia.
