Project description:Maleic anhydride plasma polymers enable amine-containing biomolecules and polymers to be covalently coupled to a surface from an aqueous solution without any intermediate chemistry. The challenge in developing these functionally active plasma polymers lies in determining the optimal deposition conditions for producing a stable, highly active film. Unlike many previous studies that explore highly varied pulsed and continuous wave (CW) deposition conditions, this paper focuses on the comparison of films deposited under the same low nominal power conditions (1 W) and compares a range of CW, millisecond, and microsecond pulsing parameters that can be used to produce this power condition. The use of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has enabled the quantitative examination of the effects of processing parameters on the chemical functionality of the films. For the first time, the molecular specificity, surface sensitivity, and high mass resolution of time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SSIMS) has been exploited to compare these films and multivariate analysis techniques used to explore the relationships between plasma processing parameters and surface chemistry. The results of the studies clearly demonstrate that a range of conditions can produce maleic anhydride films, with optimal functionality seen under microsecond pulsing regimes. Critically, the study demonstrates that the tight control and monitoring of the deposition parameters is critical if these films are to be manufactured with optimal functionality, stability, and minimum processing time.

Project description:Succination is a non-enzymatic post-translational modification of cysteine (Cys) residues, resulting in the formation of S-(2-succino)cysteine (2SC). While hundreds of 2SC-modified proteins have been identified and are associated with the dysfunction of proteins, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Conventional methods for synthesizing succinated compounds, such as 2SC, often require prolonged reaction times and/or HCl hydrolysis. In this study, we present a rapid and efficient synthesis method for succinated compounds using maleic anhydride, enabling more effective in vivo studies of succination mechanisms. This method was tested on thiol compounds with varying molecular weights, including Cys derivatives, Cys-containing peptides, and reduced bovine serum albumin. By incubating these compounds in an aqueous buffer with maleic anhydride dissolved in an organic solvent like diethyl ether, we achieved significantly improved succination efficiency compared to conventional methods. The succination efficiency using maleic anhydride surpassed that of fumaric acid or maleic acid. Notably, this approach facilitated the succination of amino acids, peptides, and proteins within minutes at 25 °C, without requiring acid hydrolysis. Our findings provide a straightforward, time-efficient strategy for synthesizing succinated thiol compounds, offering a valuable tool to enhance the understanding of succination's molecular mechanisms and its role in protein function and dysfunction.

Project description:A new class of liquid crystalline materials, 4-(2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)phenyl 4-(alkoxy)benzoates (Mn), derived from maleic anhydride, was synthesized and studied for mesomorphic and optical properties. These materials consist of three derivatives with varying terminal flexible chain lengths (6-12 carbons) linked to the phenyl ring near the ester bond. The study employed differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to characterize the mesomorphic properties. Molecular structures were elucidated using elemental analysis, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The findings reveal that all the synthesized maleic anhydride derivatives exhibit enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophases. The insertion of the heterocyclic maleic anhydride moiety into the molecular structure influences the stability and range of the N phase. Additionally, entropy changes during N-isotropic transitions are of small magnitude and exhibit non-linear trends independent of the terminal alkoxy chain length (n). This suggests that the ester linkage group does not significantly promote molecular biaxiality, and the clearing temperature values are relatively high. By comparing the investigated materials with their furan derivatives found in existing literature, it was established that the substitution examined in this study induces the formation of nematic phases.

Project description:Styrene-maleic acid copolymers have received significant attention because of their ability to interact with lipid bilayers and form styrene-maleic acid copolymer lipid nanoparticles (SMALPs). However, these SMALPs are limited in their chemical diversity, with only phenyl and carboxylic acid functional groups, resulting in limitations because of sensitivity to low pH and high concentrations of divalent metals. To address this limitation, various nucleophiles were reacted with the anhydride unit of well-defined styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers in order to assess the potential for a new lipid disk nanoparticle-forming species. These styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer derivatives (SMADs) can form styrene-maleic acid derivative lipid nanoparticles (SMADLPs) when they interact with lipid molecules. Polymers were synthesized, purified, characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance and then used to make disk-like SMADLPs, whose sizes were measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The SMADs form lipid nanoparticles, observable by DLS and transmission electron microscopy, and were used to reconstitute a spin-labeled transmembrane protein, KCNE1. The polymer method reported here is facile and scalable and results in functional and robust polymers capable of forming lipid nanodisks that are stable against a wide pH range and 100 mM magnesium.

Project description:In the crystal structure of 2,3-di-methyl-maleic anhydride, C6H6O3, the closest non-bonding inter-molecular distances, between the carbonyl C and O atoms of neighboring mol-ecules, were measured as 2.9054 (11) and 3.0509 (11) Å, which are well below the sum of the van der Waals radii for these atoms. These close contacts, as well as packing motifs similar to that of the title compound, were also found in the crystal structure of maleic anhydride itself and other 2,3-disubstituted maleic anhydrides. Computational modeling suggests that this close contact is caused by strong electrostatic inter-actions between the carbonyl C and O atoms.

Project description:The nature of the end-groups of a PIBSA sample, namely a polyisobutylene (PIB) sample, where each chain is supposedly terminated at one end with a single succinic anhydride group, was characterized through a combination of pyrene excimer fluorescence (PEF), gel permeation chromatography, and simulations. The PIBSA sample was reacted with different molar ratios of hexamethylene diamine to generate PIBSI molecules with succinimide (SI) groups in the corresponding reaction mixtures. The molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the different reaction mixtures was determined by fitting the gel permeation chromatography traces with sums of Gaussians. Comparison of the experimental MWD of the reaction mixtures with those simulated by assuming that the reaction between succinic anhydride and amine occurs through stochastic encounters led to the conclusion that 36 wt% of the PIBSA sample constituted unmaleated PIB chains. Based on this analysis, the PIBSA sample was found to be constituted of 0.50, 0.38, and 0.12 molar fractions of PIB chains that were singly maleated, unmaleated, and doubly maleated, respectively.

Project description:Lubricants are essential in transportation vehicles and industrial machinery to improve the lifetime of moving components. Antiwear additives in lubricants significantly minimize wear and material removal due to friction. While a wide range of modified and unmodified nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively studied as lubricant additives, fully oil-miscible and oil-transparent NPs are essential to improve performance and oil visibility. Here, we report dodecanethiol-modified oil-suspendable and optical-transparent ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) with a nominal diameter of 4 nm as antiwear additives to a non-polar base oil. The ZnS NPs formed a transparent and long-term stable suspension in a synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO) lubricating oil. The ZnS NPs in PAO oil at 0.5 or 1.0 wt% concentration demonstrated excellent friction and wear protection. The synthesized ZnS NPs showed 98% wear reduction compared to the neat PAO4 base oil. For the first time, this report showed the outstanding tribological performance of the ZnS NPs benchmarked to the commercial antiwear additive zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) with an additional 40-70% wear reduction. Surface characterization revealed a ZnS-derived self-healing polycrystalline tribofilm (<250 nm), which is key to superior lubricating performance. Our results indicate the potential of ZnS NPs as a high-performance and competitive antiwear additive to ZDDP, which has broad transportation and industrial applications.

Project description:Sulfur-doped graphene oxide (SA-GO) prepared by sulfuration and alkylation of graphene oxide is applied as an efficient green anti-wear additive for harsh operation conditions of engines. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals the sulfur content of octadecylamine-modified SA-GO (sulfuration follows alkylation) is increased by 79 times compared with the reverse process that alkylation follows sulfuration, suggesting the preparation route is a key factor of the sulfuration process. The higher sulfur content and -C-S-C- sulfur bonding constitution result better lubrication effect, while the investigation of chain length of alkylation modification and concentration of the alkylated sulfur-doped graphene oxide indicates the octylamine-modified SA-GO shows smaller diameter of wear scar within the concentration range between 1 × 10-4 and 2.5 × 10-4 wt%. The decrement percent of wear scar diameter is 43.2% in 928 lubrication oil and 17.2% in PAO4 oil while the SA-GO modified by octylamine is applied with the concentrations 2.5 × 10-4 wt% in PAO4 and 1 × 10-4 wt% in 928 oil, respectively. The sulfur content in oil samples is only 0.006~0.001 wt%, which is much lower than the sulfur content standard recommended by ILSAC that is 0.5 wt%. The research work indicates the SA-GO additive is more feasible for the pollution treatment which focuses the substantial reduction of sulfur content in lubrication oil on the premise of improving lubrication capability.

Project description:Butenolides are a class of 5-membered lactones that hold great potential as bio-based monomers to replace oil-derived acrylates, of which they are cyclic analogues. Despite this structural resemblance, the reactivity of the unsaturated ester moiety of electron-poor butenolides leans toward that of maleic anhydride, another essential monomer that does not homopolymerize but copolymerizes in a highly alternating fashion with polarized electron-rich comonomers. By studying the reactivity of 5-methoxy and 5-acyloxy butenolides through a combination of kinetics and density functional theory (DFT) experiments, we explain why electron-poor butenolides constitute a missing link between acrylates and maleic anhydride in radical polymerization.

Project description:Ring opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides has become an attractive approach for the synthesis of biodegradable polyesters with various compositions. Encouraged by the efficiency and versatility of a series of amido-oxazolinate zinc complexes, in this study they were shown to be active catalysts for the synthesis of unsaturated polyesters via ROCOP of maleic anhydride and various epoxides. The relative activity of epoxides in these reactions was observed to be styrene oxide > cyclohexene oxide > phenyl glycidyl ether, which could be correlated with the electronic and steric features of the substrate. To provide more structural possibilities for the polyesters, the difference in epoxide reactivity was exploited in an attempt to prepare block terpolymers from one anhydride and two epoxides. Terpolymerization was carried out in one or two steps in a single pot. The thermal characterization by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques suggested that the resulting materials were mostly random terpolymers.
