Degradation of Methylene Blue with a Cu(II)-Quinoline Complex Immobilized on a Silica Support as a Photo-Fenton-Like Catalyst.

ABSTRACT: A Cu(II)-quinoline complex immobilized on a silica support was prepared to enhance the degradation of dyes. Mesoporous silica functionalized with this Cu(II) complex was turned into a photo-Fenton-like catalyst. Various techniques were used to characterize the resulting material, and the catalytic activity was determined by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV light irradiation. The Cu(II) ion was successfully coordinated to the quinoline ligand on a silica support. The dye degradation investigation has shown that 95% of the dye was degraded in 2.5 h. The active radical species involved in the reaction were OH^• and O₂ ^•-, suggesting that a peroxo complex intermediate might be formed during degradation processes.

Rapid degradation of methylene blue in a novel heterogeneous Fe3O4 @rGO@TiO2-catalyzed photo-Fenton system.

Project description:Herein, a ternary nanocomposite with TiO2 nanoparticles anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-encapsulated Fe3O4 spheres (Fe3O4@rGO@TiO2) is presented as a high efficient heterogeneous catalyst for photo-Fenton degradation of recalcitrant pollutants under neutral pH. Fe3O4@rGO@TiO2 was synthesized by depositing TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the Fe3O4 spheres wrapped by graphene oxide (GO) which was obtained by an electrostatic layer-by-layer method. This as-prepared catalyst reflected good ferromagnetism and superior stability which makes it convenient to be separated and recycled. Due to the synergic effects between the different components composed the catalyst, swift reduction of Fe(3+) can be achieved to regenerate Fe(2+). Fe3O4@rGO@TiO2 exhibited enhancing catalytic activity for the degradation of azo-dyes compared with Fe3O4, Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2 or SiO2@rGO@TiO2, further conforming the rapid redox reaction between Fe(2+) and Fe(3+). All these merits indicate that the composite catalyst possesses great potential for visible-light driven destruction of organic compounds.

Fe-Immobilised Catechol-Based Hypercrosslinked Polymer as Heterogeneous Fenton Catalyst for Degradation of Methylene Blue in Water.

Project description:Clean water is one of the sustainable development goals. Organic dye is one of the water pollutants affecting water quality. Hence, the conversion of dyes to safer species is crucial for water treatment. The Fenton reaction using Fe as a catalyst is a promising process. However, homogeneous catalysts are normally sensitive, difficult to separate, and burdensome to reuse. Therefore, a catechol-based hypercrosslinked polymer (catechol-HCP) was developed as an inexpensive solid support for Fe (catechol-HCP-Fe) and applied as a heterogenous Fenton catalyst. The good interaction of the catechol moiety with Fe, as well as the porous structure, simple preparation, low cost, and high stability of catechol-HCP, make it beneficial for Fe-loading in the polymer and Fenton reaction utilisation. The catechol-HCP-Fe demonstrated good catalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation in a neutral pH. Complete decolouration of 100 ppm MB could be observed within 25 min. The rate of reaction was influenced by H2O2 concentration, polymer dose, MB concentration, pH, and temperature. The catechol-HCP-Fe could be reused for at least four cycles. The dominant reactive species of the reaction was considered to be singlet oxygen (1O2), and the plausible mechanism of the reaction was proposed.

Al/Cu-PILC as a Photo-Fenton Catalyst: Paracetamol Mineralization.

Project description:Pillared clays have shown to effectively catalyze the photo-Fenton process without the necessity of acidic conditions, which is a very attractive feature from the perspective of environmentally friendly processes, especially when high natural abundance of chemical elements are incorporated. In this work, the catalytic activity of Al/Cu interlayered pillared clays for the degradation and mineralization of paracetamol through a photo-Fenton-like process was investigated. Al/Cu-pillared clays were prepared by adding ane Al/Cu pillaring solution to a bentonite suspension. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the enlargement of the interlayer space of the clay provoked by the pillaring process and Al and Cu species in the prepared samples were verified by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The specific surface area of pure bentonite was 2-fold increased after the Al/Cu pillaring process. A synthetic paracetamol solution with an initial concentration of 100 ppm was prepared for the assessment of the activity of the prepared materials. Different catalyst concentrations were tested (0.2, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 g L-1) and the complete removal of paracetamol was achieved in all cases, but the highest mineralization rate (69.8 mg total organic carbon (TOC) gcat -1 h-1) corresponds to the catalyst loading of 0.5 g L-1. An ultraviolet-C (UVC) light source was employed, and no adjustment of the pH to acidic conditions was needed to achieve these results. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) was employed to identify the reaction intermediates of paracetamol degradation. A proposed pathway for the oxidation of paracetamol molecule is presented. The effect of Cu content in the pillared clay and the stability and reusability of the catalyst were also assessed. The kinetic constants of paracetamol removal were 0.2318 and 0.0698 min-1, under photo-Fenton and UV + H2O2 processes, respectively.

Synthesis and Characterization of 2D-WS2 Incorporated Polyaniline Nanocomposites as Photo Catalyst for Methylene Blue Degradation.

Project description:2D-WS2 incorporated polyaniline nanocomposites (WS2-PANI) with varying WS2 loadings were synthesized by a facile in situ oxidative polymerization technique which effectively promoted photocatalytic waste-water remediation using methylene blue (MB) as the probe molecules. The physicochemical properties of WS2-PANI (1-5) nanocomposites were investigated using multifarious techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, BET surface area, TGA, FESEM, and HRTEM. An electron microscopy analysis that was performed using HRTEM analysis confirm the layered structure of WS2 with periodic planes (100) separated by 0.27 nm. The photocatalytic performance of the WS2-PANI (1-5) for MB degradation performed under UV photo irradiation clearly showed that 2 wt.% WS2-PANI outperformed other variants with 93% degradation MB within 90 min. Furthermore, the catalytic material was reusable for five cycles without a significant loss of the catalytic performance.

Efficient photo-assisted Fenton-like reaction of yolk-shell CuSe(Cu2Se)/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for methylene blue degradation.

Project description:Herein, a CuSe(Cu2Se) yolk-shell structure (CC) was synthesized when room temperature was 25 degree Celsius using Cu2O as a soft template, and the g-C3N4/CuSe(Cu2Se) heterojunction (CC-G) was formed by coupling appropriate amounts of g-C3N4 in the selenization process to provide a novel, green, economical, and efficient photo-Fenton catalytic material. Photo-Fenton degradation experiments proved that in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a small amount of g-C3N4 hybridization on Cu-based Fenton catalysts significantly improved methylene blue (MB) degradation. The suitable amount of g-C3N4 hybridization was selected according to the degradation efficiency. The mass of g-C3N4 constituted 20% of the mass of the Cu2O soft template. The composite material prepared using this combination (CC-G-20) exhibited the best MB degradation performance. The MB degradation efficiency in the CC-G-20/H2O2/visible light system was almost 98.3% after 60 min, which is higher than those of the parent materials (g-C3N4, 12.7%; CC, 58.6%) and had cyclic stability. The catalytic system can also stably degrade MB under dark conditions, where the MB degradation was almost 82% after 60 min. The heterojunction prevented excessive electrons and holes (e - and h+) recombination, stabilizing the reactive active substance of hydroxyl in the photo-Fenton-like catalytic system. Electron paramagnetic resonance and photoluminescence experiments confirmed this inference.

Enhanced ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue using a catalyst-free dual-frequency treatment.

Project description:Methylene blue is one of the most common pollutants found in wastewater, primarily due to its widespread use in the dye industry. Consequently, it is imperative to explore environmentally friendly and efficient methods for degrading this pollutant into non-toxic byproducts. While ultrasonic degradation methods in combination with additives or catalysts have proven effective, such additives or catalysts may inadvertently contribute to secondary pollution. Moreover, the preparation of these catalysts imposes an additional burden in terms of effort and cost. To address these issues, this paper introduces a catalyst-free dual-frequency ultrasound degradation approach for methylene blue. The sonochemical quality of the cavitation bubbles is improved using this technique because the bulk solution is populated with two types of bubbles, whose mean sizes are determined by the dual ultrasound frequencies. The findings demonstrate that, under identical acoustic power density conditions, dual-frequency ultrasound consistently outperforms single-frequency modes across all investigated parameters. Furthermore, the larger the difference between the dual frequencies used, the more effective the degradation of methylene blue. Finally, after just 20 min of sonication, a degradation efficiency of 91% was achieved with dual frequencies of 20 and 80 kHz at an acoustic power density of 209.63 ± 6.94 W/L. Consequently, this technique offers an environmentally friendly, catalyst-free, and highly effective method for degrading methylene blue.

An Investigation of PPy@1T/2H MoS2 Composites with Durable Photothermal-Promoted Effect in Photo-Fenton Degradation of Methylene Blue and in Water Evaporation.

Project description:MoS2 has garnered considerable attention as an exceptional co-catalyst that is capable of significantly enhancing the efficiency of H2O2 decomposition in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This improvement allows for a reduction in the required amounts of H2O2 and Fe2+. In this study, we investigated the cyclic durability of photo-Fenton catalysts, focusing on the degradation of pollutants through the introduction of PPy into heterogeneous 1T-2H MoS2 units. The resulting photothermal-Fenton catalysts, comprising non-ferrous Fenton catalysts, demonstrated excellent degradation performance for simulated pollutants. In comparison with 1T-2H MoS2, the PPy@1T-2H MoS2 composite exhibited remarkable stability and photothermal enhancement in the photo-Fenton degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The photo-Fenton reaction efficiently degraded contaminants, achieving 99% removal within 5 min and 99.8% removal within 30 min. Moreover, the co-catalyst complex displayed enhanced cyclic stability during the photo-Fenton reaction, with a contaminant removal efficiency of 92%, even after the 13th cyclic test. The combined effects of PPy and 1T-2H MoS2 demonstrated improved efficiency in both photocatalytic and photo-Fenton catalytic reactions. Furthermore, PPy@1T-2H MoS2 exhibited outstanding performance in the photothermal evaporation of water, achieving an efficiency of 86.3% under one solar irradiation.

Vis LED Photo-Fenton Degradation of 124-Trichlorobenzene at a Neutral pH Using Ferrioxalate as Catalyst.

Project description:Chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) are among the more toxic organic compounds frequently found in soil and groundwater. Among these, toxic and low-degradable chlorobenzenes are commonly found in the environment. In this work, an innovative process using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, ferrioxalate as the catalyst and a visible light-emitting diode lamp (Vis LED) were applied to successfully oxidize 124-trichlorobenzene (124-TCB) in a saturated aqueous solution of 124-TCB (28 mg L-1) at a neutral pH. The influence of a hydrogen peroxide (HP) concentration (61.5-612 mg L-1), Fe3+ (Fe) dosage (3-10 mg L-1), and irradiation level (Rad) (I = 0.12 W cm-2 and I = 0.18 W cm-2) on 124-TCB conversion and dechlorination was studied. A D-Optimal experimental design combined with response surface methodology (RSM) was implemented to maximize the quality of the information obtained. The ANOVA test was used to assess the significance of the model and its coefficients. The maximum pollutant conversion at 180 min (98.50%) was obtained with Fe = 7 mg L-1, HP = 305 mg L-1, and I = 0.12 W cm-2. The effect of two inorganic anions usually presents in real groundwater (bicarbonate and chloride, 600 mg L-1 each) was investigated under those optimized operating conditions. A slight reduction in the 124-TCB conversion after 180 min of reaction was noticed in the presence of bicarbonate (8.31%) and chloride (7.85%). Toxicity was studied with Microtox® (Azur Environmental, Carlsbad, CA, USA) bioassay, and a remarkable toxicity decrease was found in the treated samples, with the inhibition proportional to the remaining 124-TCB concentration. That means that nontoxic byproducts are produced in agreement with the high dechlorination degrees noticed.

Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride by Cu-Doped MIL-101(Fe) Loaded Diatomite Heterogeneous Fenton Catalyst.

Project description:In this work, the combination of high surface area diatomite with Fe and Cu bimetallic MOF material catalysts (Fe0.25Cu0.75(BDC)@DE) were synthesized by traditional solvothermal method, and exhibited efficient degradation performance to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The degradation results showed: Within 120 min, about 93% of TC was degraded under the optimal conditions. From the physical-chemical characterization, it can be seen that Fe and Cu play crucial roles in the reduction of Fe3+ because of their synergistic effect. The synergistic effect can not only increase the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), but also improve the degradation efficiency of TC. The Lewis acid property of Cu achieved the pH range of reaction system has been expanded, and it made the material degrade well under both neutral and acidic conditions. Loading into diatomite can reduce agglomeration and metal ion leaching, thus the novel catalysts exhibited low metal ion leaching. This catalyst has good structural stability, and less loss of performance after five reaction cycles, and the degradation efficiency of the material still reached 81.8%. High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the degradation intermediates of TC, it provided a deep insight of the mechanism and degradation pathway of TC by bimetallic MOFs. This allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the catalytic mechanism and degradation pathway of TC degradation by bimetallic MOFS catalysts. This work has not only achieved important progress in developing high-performance catalysts for TC degradation, but has also provided useful information for the development of MOF-based catalysts for rapid environmental remediation.

A facile synthesis of PEGylated Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2 nanocomposite as efficient photo-Fenton-like catalysts for methylene blue treatment.

Project description:The removal of toxic organic dyes from wastewater has received much attention from the perspective of environmental protection. Metal oxides see wide use in pollutant degradation due to their chemical stability, low cost, and broader light absorption spectrum. In this work, a Cu2O-centered nanocomposite Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2-PEG with an average diameter of 52 nm was prepared for the first time via a wet chemical route. In addition, highly dispersed MnO2 particles and PEG modification were realized simultaneously in one step, meanwhile, Cu2O was successfully protected under a dense SiO2 shell against oxidation. The obtained Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2-PEG showed excellent and stable photo-Fenton-like catalytic activity, attributed to integration of visible light-responsive Cu2O and H2O2-responsive MnO2. A degradation rate of 92.5% and a rate constant of 0.086 min-1 were obtained for methylene blue (MB) degradation in the presence of H2O2 under visible light for 30 min. Additionally, large amounts of •OH and 1O2 species played active roles in MB degradation. Considering the enhanced degradation of MB, this stable composite provides an efficient catalytic system for the selective removal of organic contaminants in wastewater.
