Synthesis of Dimpled Particles by Seeded Emulsion Polymerization and Their Application in Superhydrophobic Coatings.

ABSTRACT: Dimpled particles are synthesized through the seeded polymerization of fluoroacrylate and styrene on swelled polystyrene spheres. The morphologies of the particles can be controlled by the polymerization temperature, the amount of solvent swelling the seeds or the ratio of the fluoroacrylate monomer over styrene. Golf-ball-like particles with many small dimples on their surfaces are obtained at low polymerization temperatures or with a small amount of solvent. Particles with a large single dimple are formed at higher polymerization temperatures, with larger solvent amounts or a higher ratio of fluoroacrylate over styrene. The morphology formation mechanism of these dimpled particles is proposed and the application of these particles in the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings is demonstrated.

Electrochemically-Initiated RAFT Synthesis of Low Dispersity Multiblock Copolymers by Seeded Emulsion Polymerization.

Project description:We describe electrochemically initiated emulsion polymerization with reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (eRAFT) to form well-defined multiblock copolymers with low molar mass dispersity. We demonstrate the utility of our emulsion eRAFT process with the synthesis of low dispersity multiblock copolymers by seeded RAFT emulsion polymerization at ambient temperature (∼30 °C). Thus, a triblock, poly(butyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene-block-poly(4-methylstyrene) [PBMA-b-PSt-b-PMS], and a tetrablock, poly(butyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene-block-poly(styrene-stat-butyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene [PBMA-b-PSt-b-P(BA-stat-St)-b-PSt], were synthesized as free-flowing, colloidally stable latexes commencing with a surfactant-free poly(butyl methacrylate) macroRAFT agent seed latex. A straightforward sequential addition strategy with no intermediate purification steps was able to be employed due to the high monomer conversions achieved in each step. The method takes full advantage of compartmentalization phenomena and the nanoreactor concept described in previous work to achieve the predicted molar mass, low molar mass dispersity (Đ ∼ 1.1-1.2), incrementing particle size (Zav = 100-115 nm), and low particle size dispersity (PDI ∼ 0.02) for each generation of the multiblocks.

Bio-Functional, Lanthanide-Labeled Polymer Particles by Seeded Emulsion Polymerization and their Characterization by Novel ICP-MS Detection.

Project description:We present the synthesis and characterization of monodisperse, sub-micron poly(styrene) (PS) particles loaded with up to and including 10(7) lanthanide (Ln) ions per particle. These particles have been synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization with a mixture of monomer and a pre-formed Ln complex, and analyzed on a particle-by-particle basis by a unique inductively coupled plasma mass cytometer. Seed particles were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) to obtain large particle sizes in aqueous media. Extensive surface acid functionality was introduced using the acid-functional initiator ACVA, either during seed latex synthesis or in the second stage of polymerization. The loading of particles with three different Ln ions (Eu, Tb, and Ho) has proven to be close to 100 % efficient on an individual and combined basis. Covalent attachment of metal-tagged peptides and proteins such as Neutravidin to the particle surface was shown to be successful and the number of bound species can be readily determined. We believe these particles can serve as precursors for multiplexed, bead-based bio-assays utilizing mass cytometric detection.

Robust, transparent, superhydrophobic coatings using novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic dual-sized silica particles.

Project description:HypothesisThe superhydrophobic lotus leaf has dual-scale surface structures, that is, nano-bumps on micro-mountains. Large hydrophilic particles, due to its high surface energy and weight, have high affility to substrates and tend to precipitate at the bottom of coating films. Small hydrophobic particles, due to its low surface energy and weight, tends to sit on the top of coating films and form porous structures. To mimic the lotus leaf surface, it may be possible to develop dual-sized particle films, in which small particles are decorated on large particles.ExperimentsA one-step spin coating of a mixture of dual-sized silica particles (55/200 nm) was used. Epoxy resin was added to improve the adhesion of particle films. The single-sized and dual-sized particle films were compared. The mechanical robustness of particle films was tested by tape peeling and droplet impact.FindingsThe novel combination of hydrophobic silica (55 nm) and hydrophilic silica (200 nm) is essential in creating the hierarchical structures. By combining the strong adhesion of hydrophilic silica (bottom of coating film) to polymer substrates and porous structures of hydrophobic silica (top of coating film), we first time report a one-step and versatile approach to create uniform, transparent, robust, and superhydrophobic surface.

Controllable synthesis of raspberry-like PS-SiO<sub>2</sub> nanocomposite particles <i>via</i> Pickering emulsion polymerization.

Project description:This paper presents a simple and controllable method for the synthesis of monodisperse nanometer-sized organic-inorganic raspberry-like polystyrene (PS)-SiO2 nanocomposite particles (NCPs) via Pickering emulsion polymerization, by simply using a silane coupling agent, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPS), as an auxiliary monomer and controlling its hydrolysis/condensation processes and amount. In this method, when MPS was stirred in acidic water with styrene (St) for a period of time, and then a basic silica solution added, raspberry-like PS-SiO2 NCPs were directly obtained after the polymerization. The whole process needs neither surface treatment for the silica particles nor additional surfactants or stabilizers. We propose that a silica-stabilized Pickering emulsion is formed through Si-OH reaction between the hydrolysis/condensation products of MPS distributed on the St droplets surface and the silica particles.

Self-Healing of Biocompatible Superhydrophobic Coatings: The Interplay of the Size and Loading of Particles.

Project description:The broad application potential of superhydrophobic coatings is limited by the usage of environment-threatening materials and poor durability. The nature-inspired design and fabrication of self-healing coatings is a promising approach for addressing these issues. In this study, we report a fluorine-free and biocompatible superhydrophobic coating that can be thermally healed after abrasion. The coating is composed of silica nanoparticles and carnauba wax, and the self-healing is based on surface enrichment of wax in analogy to the wax secretion in plant leaves. The coating not only exhibits fast self-healing, just in 1 min under moderate heating, but also displays increased water repellency and thermal stability after healing. The rapid self-healing ability of the coating is attributed to the relatively low melting point of carnauba wax and its migration to the surface of the hydrophilic silica nanoparticles. The dependence of self-healing on the size and loading of particles provides insights into the process. Furthermore, the coating exhibits high levels of biocompatibility where the viability of fibroblast L929 cells was ∼90%. The presented approach and insights provide valuable guidelines in the design and fabrication of self-healing superhydrophobic coatings.

Seeded Growth Synthesis of Zirconia@Gold Particles in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:Metal-ceramic composite particles are of increasing interest due to their potential applications in photonic metamaterials as well as next-generation catalysts. The zirconia-gold system has received little attention due to the lack of controllable preparation methods. Well-known methods for the deposition of gold nanoshells on silica spheres, however, should be adaptable for similar zirconia-based materials. Here, we present a novel synthetic approach to the well-controlled deposition of gold on the surface of sol-gel derived zirconia mesoparticles by a stepwise method involving the immobilization of gold nanoparticles and repeated seeded-growth steps. We show that the immobilization efficiency is strongly enhanced by acidification with hydrochloric acid and additional employment of aminomethylphosphonic acid as coupling agent. The optimum conditions are identified and the subsequent incremental growth by seeded reduction of gold is demonstrated. The results shed light on the parameters governing the preparation of zirconia@gold composite particles and our synthetic approach provides a promising tool for future developments in complex nanomaterials design.

Ultra-durable superhydrophobic cellular coatings.

Project description:Developing versatile, scalable, and durable coatings that resist the accretion of matters (liquid, vapor, and solid phases) in various operating environments is important to industrial applications, yet has proven challenging. Here, we report a cellular coating that imparts liquid-repellence, vapor-imperviousness, and solid-shedding capabilities without the need for complicated structures and fabrication processes. The key lies in designing basic cells consisting of rigid microshells and releasable nanoseeds, which together serve as a rigid shield and a bridge that chemically bonds with matrix and substrate. The durability and strong resistance to accretion of different matters of our cellular coating are evidenced by strong anti-abrasion, enhanced anti-corrosion against saltwater over 1000 h, and maintaining dry in complicated phase change conditions. The cells can be impregnated into diverse matrixes for facile mass production through scalable spraying. Our strategy provides a generic design blueprint for engineering ultra-durable coatings for a wide range of applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Encapsulated Nanosilica Particles with an Acrylic Copolymer by in Situ Emulsion Polymerization Using Thermoresponsive Nonionic Surfactant.

Project description:Nanocomposites of encapsulated silica nanoparticles were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization of acrylate monomers. The synthesized material showed good uniformity and dispersion of the inorganic components in the base polymer, which enhances the properties of the nanocomposite material. A nonionic surfactant with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was used to encapsulate the silica nanoparticles in the acrylic copolymer matrix. This in situ method combined the surface modification and the encapsulation in a single pot, which greatly simplified the process compared with other conventional methods requiring separate processing steps. The morphology of the encapsulated nanosilica particles was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which confirmed the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles without any agglomerations. A neat copolymer was also prepared as a control sample. Both the neat copolymer and the prepared nanocomposite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and the flame resistance test. Due to the uniform dispersion of the non-agglomerated nanoparticles in the matrix of the polymer, TGA and flame resistance test results showed remarkably improved thermal stability. Furthermore, DMTA results demonstrated an enhanced storage modulus of the nanocomposite samples compared with that of the neat copolymer, indicating its superior mechanical properties.

Plasma-enabled superhydrophobic coatings on mild steel.

Project description:This work demonstrates a new pathway to the direct on-surface fabrication of a superhydrophobic surface coating on mild steel. The coating was formed using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to convert a liquid small-molecule precursor (1,2,4-tricholorobenzene) to a solid film via plasma-assisted on-surface polymerization. Plasma treatments were performed under a nitrogen atmosphere with a variety of power levels and durations. Samples were analysed by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), Raman spectroscopy, optical profilometry, contact angle measurement, and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Wettability of the films varied with the plasma parameters, and through the inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets in the precursor. High-dose plasma exposures of the nanoplatelet-containing precursor created superhydrophobic films with water contact angles above 150°. Potentiodynamic polarisation tests revealed that the superhydrophobic coating provided little or no corrosion protection.

Continuous Synthesis of Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes by Photo-Emulsion Polymerization in a Microreactor.

Project description:Nanosized spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) are ideal candidates for the preparation of nanometal catalysts, protein separation, and medical diagnostics. Until now, SPBs have been synthesized by photo-emulsion polymerization in a batch reactor, which remains challenging to scale up. This paper reports a successful continuous preparation of SPBs by photo-emulsion polymerization in a self-made microreactor. The effects of residence time, monomer concentration, and feed ratios on the conversion of monomers and SPB structures are systematically investigated by dynamic lighting scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) SPBs obtained in a microreactor exhibiting a narrow size distribution with a short reaction time are very effective in inhibiting the calcium carbonate scale and are comparable to those produced in a batch reactor. This work confirms the feasibility of continuous preparation and scaled-up production of SPBs.
