Project description:ObjectiveIn recent years, the video sharing app TikTok has become a new venue for health care providers and medical educators. Research on health care information within the app has primarily focused on cosmetic and plastic surgery content. TikTok could potentially be a tool used to educate the public on otolaryngology-related topics. This study is the first to analyze the quality and quantity of otolaryngology-related TikTok content.MethodsA cross-sectional study of TikTok accounts using otolaryngology-related hashtags within the preceding 6 months was conducted on February 4, 2023. Deductive qualitative analysis was performed between two coders to identify themes of the accounts and their content.ResultsA total of 47 accounts were selected for analysis. Facial plastic surgery was the most represented specialty (n = 20; 43%) and pediatric otolaryngology the least represented (n = 1; 2%). Content posted was primarily educational in nature (n = 30; 64%) and 66% (n = 31) of content creators advertised contact information in their account biography. The majority of accounts were in English (n = 30; 64%) and originated in the United States (n = 30; 64%). More accounts were run by male (n = 29; 62%) than female content creators.ConclusionOtolaryngology is a broad specialty with unequal representation of the related subspecialties on TikTok, a popular social media platform. The majority of current content focuses on patient education in facial plastic surgery. Future studies are warranted to examine the potential growth and impact of otolaryngology content on this video-based platform.Level of evidence2.

Project description:BackgroundThe financial principles of a no-cost revision policy and their implications for revision rates are not well understood.ObjectivesTherefore, the primary objective of this retrospective study is to report our no-cost revision rates and, secondarily, to survey the cosmetic revision policies of other cosmetic surgery practices and detail the financial principles underpinning no-cost revisions.MethodsAll aesthetic surgeries and no-cost revisions performed by the plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons at our academic outpatient cosmetic surgery center from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2022 were identified using procedural codes. Data on the number of surgeries, number of revisions, operative minutes, and time intervals between initial and revision surgeries were collected. A survey was administered to assess the revision policies of similar cosmetic surgery practices.ResultsA total of 1491 aesthetic surgeries and minimally invasive procedures were included, and 125 revision procedures were performed (8.4%). Thigh lifts (3, 13.6%), rhinoplasties or septoplasties (25, 15.8%), and otoplasties (3, 27.3%) had the highest revision rates. Three practices (15%) offered cosmetic revisions at no cost, 9 (45%) did not apply a surgeon's fee, 5 (25%) evaluated fees on a case-by-case basis, 1 (5%) offered revisions with an insurance policy, and 2 (10%) cosmetic surgery practices did not offer revisions at a reduced rate.ConclusionsDespite offering revisions at no cost, our revision rates are reasonable for an academic cosmetic surgery practice. The revision policies offered to patients on the private market are varied, but most surveyed practices offer revisions at either a reduced rate or no cost.Level of evidence 4

The novelty of this aspect of plastic surgery and the lack of evidence-based interventions, have led to a comparison with female genital mutilation. In this article, the authors provide an overview of the possible surgical procedures as well as the general principles of aesthetic surgery of the female genitalia.

Project description:Appearance of the male genitalia is linked with self-esteem and sexual identity. Aesthetic surgery of the male genitalia serves to correct perceived deficiencies as well as physical deformities, which may cause psychological distress. Attention to patient motivation for surgery and to surgical technique is key to achieving optimal results. In this review, the authors describe aesthetic surgical techniques for treatment of penile and scrotal deficiencies. They also discuss techniques for revision in patients with previous surgery.

Project description:Background and objectiveThrough the centuries the appearance of the male genitalia has always been an important concern for men, symbolizing virility, potency and sexual contentment. Correction of perceived deficiencies and deformities of the male genitalia can be addressed by aesthetic surgery as well as the enhancement its external aspect. If the social acceptance of cosmetic surgery, particularly of women's breasts, dates from the early 1950s, male intimate cosmetic surgery emerged from the shadows about 10 years ago with a medical community still very suspicious and reproachful. The present paper aims to describe and discuss the current state of the art regarding male intimate cosmetic surgery.MethodsA narrative review of the literature was performed using publications from January 2000 to September 2022. The publications were retrieved from the PubMed database using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and keywords. The authors' goal is to narrate the aesthetic non-surgical and surgical enhancement procedures of the male apparatus.Key content and findingsThis narrative review examines the diverse procedures associated with male genitalia aesthetics.ConclusionsAesthetics of the male genitalia is now an unavoidable and important part of aesthetic surgery worldwide with an increasing demand. Nonsurgical and surgical techniques described in the literature should be reviewed.

Project description:BackgroundNasal alar deformity after cosmetic surgery, including nostril sill notching, alar flattening, and a shallow and indistinct alar-facial crease, commonly results from overresection. We developed revision methods for postoperative alar deformity, and applied them from 2016 to 2022 to the revision of 16 cases, consisting of 1 male and 15 female patients, with a median age of 28.5 years.MethodsAuricular cartilage grafting was used as the main technique to improve alar flattening and notching without risking a poor color match as is seen in composite grafting. Notching was also improved by adding an alar lobule island flap if there was usable excess tissue on the lateral side of the ala. Two cinching sutures were used to define the alar-facial crease.ResultsMedian follow-up was 9.25 months (range, 0.5-96 mo). All lobule flaps survived. Cartilage graft infection occurred in 1 case, requiring removal of the graft.ConclusionsAlar flattening and other deformities often result from too-aggressive nasal cosmetic surgery. These can be corrected using lobule flaps and auricular cartilage grafts, which, unlike composite grafts, do not undergo degeneration with the associated risk of ischemia or discoloration.

Project description:BackgroundTo examine the cosmetic outcome of femtosecond laser-assisted pterygium surgery (FLAPS) with conjunctival autograft (CAG) and its potential predictive factors.MethodsThis was a prospective interventional case series (NCT02866968). We included 29 patients (29 eyes) with primary pterygium who underwent FLAPS. Cosmetic outcome was graded by two graders (an ophthalmology resident and an experienced ophthalmologist) using Hirst classification system (1-4 = excellent-poor). Weighted Cohen's kappa analysis was performed to examine the intra- and inter-rater reliability. The relationship between cosmetic outcome and various factors were determined by Spearman's correlation coefficients (r).ResultsThe preoperative severity of pterygium (Tan grading system) was mild/atrophic (7%), moderate/intermediate (62%), and severe/fleshy (31%). An ultrathin CAG (mean thickness of 74.5 ± 9.8 μm) was fashioned intraoperatively. An excellent cosmetic outcome of FLAPS (median ± IQR) was observed at 3 months (1.0 ± 1.0) and remained similar at 6 months (1.0 ± 0.0) and 12 months (1.0 ± 0.0) postoperatively. At final follow-up, 27 (93%) patients achieved good-to-excellent cosmetic outcome, with 1 (3%) patient having a poor outcome due to incomplete pterygium removal. Weighted kappa analysis of Hirst grading system showed excellent intra-rater (κ = 0.86-0.95) and inter-rater reliability (κ = 0.84-0.88). There was a weak and borderline significant correlation between good cosmetic outcome and reduced postoperative CAG thickness (r = 0.38, P = 0.06) but not with age, gender, preoperative pterygium severity, or intraoperative CAG thickness.ConclusionsFLAPS can result in an excellent cosmetic outcome, which may be attributed to the beneficial effect of an ultrathin CAG.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov , NCT02866968 . Project description:To present the demographic characteristics of Saudi patients undergoing cosmetic procedures. Methods: This prospective study survey was conducted in 3 private cosmetic surgery centers in different regions of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh and Jeddah) between January and August 2016. Validated questionnaire with modification was used and the following patient's information were provided: age group, height and weight, marital status, number of children, age of the patient's spouse, educational level, monthly income, name of the cosmetic procedure, names of any previous cosmetic procedures and their reason for cosmetic procedure. Results: The present study revealed that a typical Saudi cosmetic surgery patients are university graduates, married (46.8%), employed (68.3%), and middle aged 20-40 years of age (70%), with a fairly high typical monthly income. Conclusion: There is a possible positive correlation between gender and undergoing cosmetic procedure. Laser hair removal, botox, liposuction, filler, and scar revision are common among females, while rhinoplasty is a common procedure among males.

Project description:This study was designed to compare patients who have undergone conventional laparoscopic surgery with those who undergone multiport robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign gynecological diseases regarding cosmetic results, patient satisfaction, and quality of life. Sixty-four patients who underwent either robot-assisted or conventional laparoscopic surgery for benign gynecological diseases from July 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 at Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University Hospital were enrolled. Patients were evaluated using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale, visual analog scale for cosmetic satisfaction, body image questionnaire, and 12-item Short Form Survey six months postoperatively. The median patient assessment scale and observer assessment scale (general) values were significantly higher in the robotic group than in the laparoscopic group. The mean body image questionnaire (cosmetic section) and visual analog scale values were significantly higher in the laparoscopic group than in the robotic group. No significant differences in body image scale, body image questionnaire 9-10, and 12-item Short Form Survey values were observed between the groups. The number of patients with previous surgical history was significantly higher in the laparoscopic group than in the robotic group. Although esthetic concerns are not a priority consideration when deciding an appropriate surgical method, the higher cosmetic satisfaction rate in the laparoscopic group than in the robotic group suggests that cosmetic results should be discussed with patients after evaluating other factors.
