A bibliometric analysis of publications on burn sepsis using VOSviewer.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Sepsis is one of the most common complications in burn patients and causes high morbidity, especially in those with severe burns. Nevertheless, there are no formal criteria for diagnosing and treating burn sepsis. Therefore, this bibliometric analysis is applied to reveal research trends in this field and predicts its possible hot spots.

Methods

We screened relevant literature on burn sepsis that met the inclusion criteria of the Web of Sciences (WOS) database and analyzed publication trends and research hot spots in related fields using VOSviewer software.

Results

From 1981 to 2022, we screened 2,486 documents that met the requirements and analyzed them bibliometrically. The American scholar Herndon DN had a much higher h-index [47] than other authors. Most published, cited, and h-indexed publications are from the USA (Np: 1193, Nc: 42154, H: 98). The second most publishing country is China, but the second most cited and h-indexed country is Germany. Burns also outperforms other journals in this field (Np: 376, Nc: 8019, H: 46). "Biomarkers" is a newly emerging keyword (cluster "clinical research," APY was 2018.16), and clinically relevant research in burn sepsis maybe a future research trend.

Conclusions

Sepsis in burn patients has unique pathophysiological characteristics and the general diagnostic criteria for sepsis lack specificity. Consequently, we must establish a database and construct an intelligent predictive model to help achieve a more individualized and precise early diagnosis and treatment of burn sepsis. This may also be an important development direction for future research in this field.

Project description:BackgroundThe characteristic symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is respiratory distress, but neurological symptoms are the most frequent extra-pulmonary symptoms. This study aims to explore the current status and hot topics of neurology-related research on COVID-19 using bibliometric analysis.MethodsPublications regarding neurology and COVID-19 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on March 28 2022. The Advanced search was conducted using "TS = ('COVID 19' or 'Novel Coronavirus 2019' or 'Coronavirus disease 2019' or '2019-nCOV' or 'SARS-CoV-2' or 'coronavirus-2') and TS = ('neurology'or 'neurological' or 'nervous system' or 'neurodegenerative disease' or 'brain' or 'cerebra' or 'nerve')". Microsoft Excel 2010 and VOSviewer were used to characterize the largest contributors, including the authors, journals, institutions, and countries. The hot topics and knowledge network were analyzed by CiteSpace and VOSviewer.ResultsA total of 5,329 publications between 2020 and 2022 were retrieved. The United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom were three key contributors to this field. Harvard Medical School, the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology were the major institutions with the largest publications. Josef Finsterer from the University of São Paulo (Austria) was the most prolific author. Tom Solomon from the University of Liverpool (UK) was the most cited author. Neurological Sciences and Frontiers in Neurology were the first two most productive journals, while Journal of Neurology held the first in terms of total citations and citations per publication. Cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, encephalitis and encephalopathy, neuroimmune complications, neurological presentation in children, long COVID and mental health, and telemedicine were the central topics regarding the neurology-related research on COVID-19.ConclusionNeurology-related research on COVID-19 has attracted considerable attention worldwide. Research topics shifted from "morality, autopsy, and telemedicine" in 2020 to various COVID-19-related neurological symptoms in 2021, such as "stroke," "Alzheimer's disease," "Parkinson's disease," "Guillain-Barre syndrome," "multiple sclerosis," "seizures in children," and "long COVID." "Applications of telemedicine in neurology during COVID-19 pandemic," "COVID-19-related neurological complications and mechanism," and "long COVID" require further study.

Project description:BackgroundRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that poses a significant threat to a patient's quality of life. Commonly used drugs include glucocorticoids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, and biological agents; however, there are associated side effects. Complementary and alternative medicines can play positive roles. Bibliometric analysis of herbal medicines for RA has been conducted, but current research trends in nonpharmaceutical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies for the treatment of RA have not been studied. Here, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the application of nonpharmaceutical TCM therapies for RA over the last 20 years.MethodsWe retrieved relevant literature from the Web of Science Core Collection database and used VOSviewer and CiteSpace software for analysis. Visualized maps were then generated to display the relationships between the author, country, institution, and keywords.ResultsA total of 567 articles were included in the final analysis. The number of annual publications on nonpharmaceutical TCM interventions for RA increased over the study period. The journal with the highest number of publications on this topic was Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine; however, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews had the most citations. Collaborations were observed among worldwide institutions, with the People's Republic of China playing a dominant role in the research on treatment of RA using nonpharmaceutical TCM therapies. Ernst E was the most productive author, with 11 articles, whereas Green S had the highest number of citations (287) at the time of retrieval. Specific improvements in the efficacy and selection of nonpharmaceutical therapies were the main research hotspots based on citation burst analysis.ConclusionThis study characterizes the trends in the literature for nonpharmaceutical TCM therapy for RA over the past 20 years; showcasing the current research status for relevant researchers and their teams and providing a reference for future research directions.
