Caring Ability and Professional Values of Polish Nursing Students-A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: Caring ability and professional values developed and shaped during nursing university studies are often recognised as fundamental components of education and professional nursing attitudes. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between caring ability and professional values among nursing students and their correlation with selected sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 379 nursing students. During the research, the Polish versions of the Caring Ability Inventory and the Professional Values Scale were used. The overall result in the Professional Values Scale was 108.78 (SD = 16.17)-which is considered average, and in the Caring Ability Inventory 189.55 (SD = 18.77)-which is considered low. Age correlated negatively with the professional values of students in total and in the subscale "care"; in contrast, "gender", "place of residence" and "financial situation" did not show any correlation with the level of students' professional values and caring ability. The professional values and caring abilities of nursing students depended on the year and mode of study and the type of university. The results of the study revealed that the caring ability and professional values of nursing students undergo changes during their education.

Project description:BackgroundRehabilitation is considered one of the elements of universal health coverage, emphasizing its importance for every person in need throughout the life course. Nurses play a pivotal role in the rehabilitation team as they possess the competencies to help individuals manage health problems and maximize potential well-being. Yet, little is known regarding knowledge of this subject among nursing students, as well as regarding their attitudes, thoughts, and professional behavior. This study aimed to explore: (a) Sophomore students' attitudes, feelings, thoughts, and professional behavior toward rehabilitation patients; and (b) Differences in the research variables as affected by students' previous exposure to rehabilitation patients.MethodsA cross-sectional survey design among sophomore nursing students. A questionnaire was distributed through a commercial internet survey provider (Qualtrics.com) before the beginning of a mandatory course on "nursing rehabilitation", introduced for the first time in 2022 in all Israeli universities. Students were divided into three groups according to their previous exposure to rehabilitation patients: no professional or personal previous exposure to rehabilitation patients; previous professional or personal exposure to rehabilitation patients; and previous exposure to rehabilitation patients both in one's professional and personal life. The study adhered to the STROBE guidelines.ResultsThe sample consisted of 122 participants. Significant differences were found between the groups by their previous exposure to rehabilitation patients. Participants with no previous exposure to rehabilitation patients were found to have lower self-perceived capability to care for rehabilitation patients and more negative professional behavior toward rehabilitation patients and their families compared to the other two groups (H = 22.06, p = 0.006, H = 23.86, p = 0.03, respectively). No other statistical differences were observed between the groups.ConclusionsThe findings emphasize the importance of exposing students to the field of nursing rehabilitation and to the care of rehabilitation patients. Exposure to nursing rehabilitation specifically during one's studies, through theoretical learning and clinical experience, can promote positive attitudes, professional values, and positive professional behavior toward these patients and their families.

Project description:BackgroundEducation has been recognised as necessary in forming and internalising professional values. The system and instructors' content in existing educational institutions focus on developing students' knowledge, skills and practices. Still, the development of values has yet to achieve significant effects, leading to a crisis in students' professional identity.AimsTo construct a professional values growth theory for undergraduate nursing students and develop a corresponding education framework.MethodsThrough the review, some databases(PubMed、CINAHL、Web of Science、Wiley and Google Scholars)were searched using a systematic search strategy to collect relevant literature on professional values education. Based on the nursing professional values growth theory (Li and Li, Nursing Ethics In press, 2022), a theory of professional values growth of nursing undergraduates was developed using the method of theory derivation. Two rounds of expert meetings were conducted to review and revise an education framework of professional values of nursing undergraduates derived from that theory.FindingsA total of 10 studies were included. The contents of two themes were analysed: theories and models and the current status of the professional values development of nursing students. The resulting professional values growth theory for undergraduate nursing students consists of five parts: key aspects, decisive opportunities, drivers, embodiment (humanistic sentiments, moral emotions), and outcomes. A total of five experts in the relevant fields were invited to this study. After two rounds of expert meetings, an education framework for undergraduate nursing students was finally developed, which consists of four parts: education objectives, education process and content, environment and conditions, and evaluation.ConclusionThe education framework developed in this study has practical implications for the development of professional values of undergraduate nursing students, providing educational strategies and methods for the growth and internalisation of professional values of undergraduate nursing students.

Project description:ObjectivesPositive attitudes towards end-of-life care are essential among nursing students to adequately support terminally ill patients and enable students to feel confident about providing end-of-life care. This study aimed to determine nursing students' attitudes towards caring for terminally ill patients, as well as the associations between these attitudes and year of study, exposure to terminally ill people, self-perceived nursing skills and subjective impact of instruction.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingA health sciences school in Switzerland.ParticipantsAll preparatory students, first-year nursing students and third-year nursing students were invited to participate; 178 agreed to participate.Primary outcome measureAttitudes towards terminally ill patients were assessed using the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale, Form B (FATCOD, Form B), as the primary outcome. Secondary measures were gender, age, year of study, number of terminally ill persons encountered, self-perceived palliative care nursing skills and subjective impact of instruction.ResultsMean FATCOD, Form B score was 117.7 (SD: 9.8, median: 118.0). Better attitudes towards terminally ill patients were significantly associated with being aged 24-26 years (β=6.97, 95% CI 2.00 to 11.95, p=0.006), year of study (β=3.47, 95% CI 1.69 to 5.25, p<0.001), professional encounters with terminally ill patients (β=3.59, 95% CI 2.23 to 4.95, p<0.001) and self-perceived palliative care nursing competence (β=1.23, 95% CI 0.41 to 2.04; p=0.003). In the multivariate analysis, professionally encountering terminally ill patients remained significant (β=3.00; 95% CI 1.43 to 4.57; p<0.001).ConclusionsNursing students' attitudes towards caring for terminally ill patients were positive and improved as their year of study progressed. Professional exposure to terminally ill patients was the strongest factor, followed by private encounters, self-perceived palliative care nursing skills, year of study and age.

Project description:BackgroundProfessional commitment of nursing students is closely related to the stability of the nursing team. Personality traits and metacognition may be related to professional commitment. We investigate the association between Big Five personality, metacognition, and professional commitment among nursing students, and further explore whether Big Five personality modifies the association between metacognition and professional commitment.MethodsFrom December 2023 to January 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 3631 nursing students from 17 universities in China through the online platform Sojump.com by cluster sampling method and using the general information questionnaire, BFI-44 (Big Five Inventory 44) scale, metacognition scale and professional commitment scale to investigate their demographic data, personality traits, level of metacognition and level of professional commitment. Latent profile analysis was employed to identify optimal categories of personality traits. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the personality traits and professional commitment, as well as metacognition and professional commitment in all participants and participants with different personality traits subgroups, adjusting for potential covariates. Furthermore, the potential mediating role of metacognition between personality traits and professional commitment was also investigated.ResultsThree distinct personality traits were identified: sensitive-negative personality (65.2%), ordinary personality (26.6%), and open-positive personality (8.2%). Compared with nursing students with sensitive-negative personality, nursing students with ordinary personality and open-positive personality were associated with professional commitment, respectively [OR (95% CI): 7.01 (5.99-8.20), 21.09 (15.43-28.83)]. The p value for trend of personality and professional commitment was < 0.001. Metacognition was associated with professional commitment [OR (95% CI): 5.95 (5.20-6.81); p < 0.001]. Personality traits could modify the association between metacognition and professional commitment (pinteraction = 0.009). The mediating role of metacognition between Big Five personality and professional commitment has also been verified.ConclusionsPersonality traits and metacognition of nursing students need to be paid attention to, and interventions based on metacognition may help nursing students with different personality traits to improve their professional commitment level.
