Project description:The direct epoxidation of propylene with molecular oxygen represents a desired route for propylene oxide (PO) production with 100% theoretical atomic economy. However, this aerobic epoxidation reaction suffers from the apparent trade-off between propylene conversion and PO selectivity, and remains a key challenge in catalysis. We report that Ti-Beta zeolites containing isolated framework Ti species can efficiently catalyze the aerobic epoxidation of propylene. Stable propylene conversion of 25% and PO selectivity of up to 90% are achieved at the same time, matching the levels of industrial ethylene aerobic epoxidation processes. H-terminated pentacoordinated Ti species in Beta zeolite frameworks are identified as the preferred active sites for propylene aerobic epoxidation and the reaction is initiated by the participation of lattice oxygen in Ti-OH. These results are expected to spark new technology for the industrial production of PO toward more sustainable chemistry and chemical engineering.

Project description:Silica nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) from renewable sources can be used in very different materials, such as paints, membranes for fuel cells, Li-ion batteries, adsorbents, catalysts, and so on. Brazil is the world's largest producer of sugarcane and generates huge amounts of sugarcane waste ash (SWA), which is a Si-rich source. This study investigates a method to produce highly pure SiO2NPs from SWA. The SiO2NPs were characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction analyses, specific surface area and pore distribution, UV and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses and applied as an adsorbent material in the removal of acid orange 8 (AO8) dye from aqueous solution. The SiO2 content was 88.68 and 99.08 wt % for SWA and SiO2NPs, respectively. TEM images of SWA and SiO2NPs exhibit drastic alterations of the material size ranging from several micrometers to less than 20 nm. The SiO2NPs showed a specific surface area of 131 m2 g-1 and adsorption capacity of around 230 mg g-1 for acid orange 8 dye. Furthermore, the recycling of the SiO2NPs adsorbent after AO8 adsorption was very satisfactory, with reuse for up to five cycles being possible. The results indicate that it was possible to obtain highly pure silica in a nanosize from the waste material and produce an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and the possibility of reuse.

Project description:Small-pore silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) zeolites with 8-ring pore windows and appropriate acidities/polarities, for example, SAPO-34 (CHA) and SAPO-56 (AFX), have proven to be potential adsorbing materials for selective adsorption of CO2. However, SAPO-35 zeolites (LEV framework topology) synthesized using conventional templates are less reported for highly selective CO2 adsorption which might be due to inappropriate Si contents and acidities in the framework. In this work, by using N-methylpiperidine (NMP) as a template, SAPO-35 zeolites with various Si contents were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, which allowed SAPO-35 zeolites with modulated acidities and polarities. The CO2 adsorption and separation properties of SAPO-35_x (x: Si/(Si + P + Al) in molar ratio) were investigated, and a close relationship between the acidity, polarity and CO2 adsorption and separation capacity was revealed. SAPO-35_0.14 with the strongest acidity showed the highest CO2 uptake of 4.76 mmol g-1 (273 K and 100 kPa), and appeared to be one of the best SAPO materials for CO2 adsorption. Moreover, increased Brønsted acidity can significantly enhance the adsorption selectivity of CO2 over N2. At 298 K and 100 kPa, SAPO-35_0.14 showed the highest CO2/N2 selectivity of 49.9, exhibiting potential for industrial processes. Transient binary breakthrough experiments on SAPO-35_0.14 further proved the efficient separation performance and stable circulation. The results of this study prove that the framework Si content of SAPO-35 zeolites is essential for regulating their CO2 adsorption performance. This work demonstrates that modulating the silicon content and acidity in SAPO zeolites via a suitable choice of template, as well as polarity, is of great significance for the rational synthesis of zeolites with superior CO2 adsorption and separation abilities.

Project description:Adsorption and desorption behaviors of ammonia on the zeolites were investigated using the pressure-swing method to utilize the ammonia adsorbent at 473 K. For various (Y, A, L, and mordenite) types of zeolites, the effects of their pore sizes, countercation species, and number of adsorption sites on the ammonia adsorption behavior were evaluated. The adsorption capacity increased with increasing the pore size. The differences in the countercation species and the number of adsorption sites contributed to the ammonia adsorption process on the zeolites. Sodium cations strongly adsorb ammonia molecules. The adsorption/desorption of ammonia expanded and shrunk the zeolite crystal, suggesting that the pores in the zeolite were enlarged by the adsorption of ammonia molecules. Despite repetitive lattice expansion and shrinkage, the morphologies of the zeolite particles were not degraded. These results confirm that the zeolite showed high durability for the adsorption and desorption of ammonia at 473 K.

Project description:Over the last few decades, researchers have developed a number of empirical and theoretical models for the correlation and prediction of the thermophysical properties of pure fluids and mixtures treated as pseudo-pure fluids. In this paper, a survey of all the state-of-the-art formulations of thermophysical properties is presented. The most-accurate thermodynamic properties are obtained from multiparameter Helmholtz-energy-explicit-type formulations. For the transport properties, a wider range of methods has been employed, including the extended corresponding states method. All of the thermophysical property correlations described here have been implemented into CoolProp, an open-source thermophysical property library. This library is written in C++, with wrappers available for the majority of programming languages and platforms of technical interest. As of publication, 110 pure and pseudo-pure fluids are included in the library, as well as properties of 40 incompressible fluids and humid air. The source code for the CoolProp library is included as an electronic annex.

Project description:In vertebrates, trunk neural crest (NC) generates glia, neurons, and melanocytes. In addition, it yields mesectodermal derivatives (connective tissues, chondrocytes, and myofibroblasts lining the blood vessels) in the head. Previous in vitro clonal analyses of avian NC cells unraveled a hierarchical succession of highly pluripotent, followed by various intermediate, progenitors, suggesting a model of progressive restrictions in the multiple potentialities of a totipotent stem cell, as prevails in the hematopoietic system. However, which progenitors are able to self-renew within the hierarchy of the NC lineages is still undetermined. Here, we explored further the stem cell properties of quail NC cells by means of in vitro serial subcloning. We identified types of multipotent and oligopotent NC progenitors that differ in their developmental repertoire, ability to self-maintain, and response to exogenous endothelin 3 according to their truncal or cephalic origin. The most striking result is that bipotent progenitors are endowed with self-renewal properties. Thus glia-melanocyte and glia-myofibroblast progenitors behave like stem cells in that they are able both to self-renew and generate a restricted progeny. In our culture conditions, glia-myofibroblast precursors display a modest capacity to self-renew, whereas glia-melanocyte precursors respond to endothelin 3 by extensive self-renewal. These findings may explain the etiology of certain multiphenotypic NC-derived tumors in humans. Moreover, the presence of multiple stem cell phenotypes along the NC-derived lineages may account for the rarity of the "totipotent NC stem cell" and may be related to the large variety and widespread dispersion of NC derivatives throughout the body.

Project description:The present work deals with the study of water adsorption on acid-modified zeolites A. Commercial zeolites 4A (Na form) and 5A (Ca form) were subjected to EDTA dealumination, and their structure, textural properties and stability were checked by XRD, EDX, NMR and N2 physisorption analyses. The water adsorption isotherms of the parent zeolites and their modified forms were measured at a temperature of 25 °C and up to a relative pressure of 0.9. The results show that the treatment with EDTA drastically changes the structural properties of the zeolites and increases the water adsorption capacity by up to 10%. The changes depend on the type of extra-framework cations (Na+ and Ca2+) and the EDTA concentration.

Project description:The separation of xylenes is one of the most important processes in the petrochemical industry. In this article, the competitive adsorption from a fluid-phase mixture of xylenes in zeolites is studied. Adsorption from both vapor and liquid phases is considered. Computations of adsorption of pure xylenes and a mixture of xylenes at chemical equilibrium in several zeolite types at 250 °C are performed by Monte Carlo simulations. It is observed that shape and size selectivity entropic effects are predominant for small one-dimensional systems. Entropic effects due to the efficient arrangement of xylenes become relevant for large one-dimensional systems. For zeolites with two intersecting channels, the selectivity is determined by a competition between enthalpic and entropic effects. Such effects are related to the orientation of the methyl groups of the xylenes. m-Xylene is preferentially adsorbed if xylenes fit tightly in the intersection of the channels. If the intersection is much larger than the adsorbed molecules, p-xylene is preferentially adsorbed. This study provides insight into how the zeolite topology can influence the competitive adsorption and selectivity of xylenes at reaction conditions. Different selectivities are observed when a vapor phase is adsorbed compared to the adsorption from a liquid phase. These insight have a direct impact on the design criteria for future applications of zeolites in the industry. MRE-type and AFI-type zeolites exclusively adsorb p-xylene and o-xylene from the mixture of xylenes in the liquid phase, respectively. These zeolite types show potential to be used as high-performing molecular sieves for xylene separation and catalysis.

Project description:Conformational characteristics of poly(ethylene carbonate) (PEC) and poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) have been revealed via molecular orbital (MO) calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on model compounds with the same bond sequences as those of the polycarbonates. Bond conformations derived from the MO calculations on the models were in exact agreement with those from the NMR experiments. Both PEC and PPC were indicated to adopt distorted conformations including a number of gauche bonds and cover themselves with negative charges, thus failing to form a regular packing and remaining amorphous. The MO data were applied to the refined rotational isomeric state (RIS) calculations to yield configurational properties such as the characteristic ratio, its temperature coefficient, the configurational entropy, and average geometrical parameters of unperturbed PEC and PPC chains. In the RIS calculations on PPC, the regio- and stereosequences were generated according to the Bernoulli trial or Markov stochastic process. In consequence, it was shown that the configurational properties of PPC do not depend significantly on its regio- and stereoregularities. The internal energy contribution to rubberlike chain elasticity, calculated from the temperature coefficient of the characteristic ratio, has indicated the possibility that PEC and PPC will behave as elastomers. The practical applications and potential utilizations of the polycarbonates are discussed on the basis of the conformational characteristics and configurational properties.

Project description:Machine learning potentials (MLPs) capable of accurately describing complex ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) have revolutionized the field of multiscale atomistic modeling. In this work, using an extensive density functional theory (DFT) data set (denoted as Si-ZEO22) consisting of 219 unique zeolite topologies (350,000 unique DFT calculations) found in the International Zeolite Association (IZA) database, we have trained a DeePMD-kit MLP to model the dynamics of silica frameworks. The performance of our model is evaluated by calculating various properties that probe the accuracy of the energy and force predictions. This MLP demonstrates impressive agreement with DFT for predicting zeolite structural properties, energy-volume trends, and phonon density of states. Furthermore, our model achieves reasonable predictions for stress-strain relationships without including DFT stress data during training. These results highlight the ability of MLPs to capture the flexibility of zeolite frameworks and motivate further MLP development for nanoporous materials with near-ab initio accuracy.
