A pilot summer elective research opportunity was made available to medical students at the University of Malta. A call was sent out in June 2021. Interested students sent a short "intention to participate" email to the coordinator which was analysed. One in every twelve enrolled medical students applied. Project description:BackgroundThroughout the years significant progress has been observed in all medical fields. It was possible to achieve thanks to a wide range of scientists, including physician-scientists. However, in recent years their number is significantly declining. Thus we have aimed to explore the attitudes of medical students towards research.MethodsThe cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students of Medical University of Warsaw between the 1st and 23rd of December 2019. Survey examining scientific interests and activities, opinions on selected research issues, and perception of potential barriers to research activities has been distributed to 838 students and collected from 695 (391 students of the 2nd year and 304 of the 5th year) with a response rate of 82.9%. Descriptive statistics, the Chi-squared test, U-Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for between-group comparisons. The differences were considered statistically significant if the p values were <.05.Results55.2% of responders rated their scientific interests in high school as high, with no significant differences between 2nd and 5th-year students. 33.8% (n = 233) of all students plan to pursue research activity after graduation, and 52.8% (n = 360) plan to obtain PhD title. Students who presented higher scientific interests in high school more often were involved in research projects at the university (24.7% vs 17.5%, p = .044), and showed higher interest in pursuing a research career (37.9% vs 28.9%, p = .02). Lack of time and knowledge on starting a research project were perceived as the main barriers to scientific work.ConclusionsMany medical students express research interests, are involved in scientific projects, and plan to pursue their careers in this direction. There is a majority of students with lower attitudes towards research. Medical universities should consider adapting their curricula accordingly to accommodate the needs of both groups and respond to the shortage of physicians working in clinics and research.KEY MESSAGESOne-third of medical students plan to pursue career in medical research after graduation.Students who presented higher scientific interests in the high school are more often involved in research projects at the university and show higher interest in pursuing a research career.According to medical students, lack of time, resources and funding and insufficient knowledge how to start a research project are the most important barriers to research activity.

Project description:IntroductionPhysicians are at the centre of bench-to-bedside research, yet the number of physicians engaging in research is declining. One solution to overcome this alarming trend is exposing medical students to research. This study aims to assess the impact of engaging medical students in research, and the feasibility of conducting research solely using online communication.MethodsA pilot elective research opportunity was offered to medical students enrolled to the University of Malta Doctor of Medicine and Surgery course by a resident academic (summer 2021) of the same institute to assess the epidemiology of COVID-19 in Europe. An anonymous survey was distributed to seventy medical students recruited to participate in this elective research project. The data collected was analysed and interpreted.ResultsA response rate of 88.73% was achieved. "Career progression" and "lack of time" were the most reported motivating and hindering factors towards conducting research, respectively, before engaging in a research experience. Research experience helped overcome reported barriers (p < 0.01), while also challenging students' perceptions towards research. An increase in positive perceptions towards research was observed after conducting research. An overwhelming majority (90.47%) of participants reported that mentorship played an influential role in their overall experience, and 95.24% commented that they would like research opportunities to be made available by their faculty.Discussion and conclusionGiving students the opportunity to conduct research demonstrated how research experience improves students' soft skills and the understanding of research. Project description:BackgroundThe proportion of medical school graduates who pursue careers other than full-time clinical practice has increased in some countries as the physician's role has evolved and diversified with the changing landscape of clinical practice and the advancement of biomedicine. Still, past studies of medical students' career choices have focused on clinical specialties and little is known about their choice of non-clinical careers. The present study examined backgrounds, motivation and perceptions of medical students who intended non-clinical careers.MethodsA questionnaire was administered to students at six Korean medical schools distributed across all provinces in the nation. The questionnaire comprised 40 items on respondents' backgrounds, their motivation for and interest in the study of medicine, their perceptions of medical professions, and their career intentions. Data was analyzed using various descriptive and inferential statistics.ResultsIn total, 1,388 students returned the questionnaire (60% response rate), 12.3% of whom intended non-clinical careers (i.e., basic sciences, non-clinical medical fields, and non-medical fields). Those who planned non-clinical careers were comparable with their peers in their motivation for studying medicine and in their views of medical professions, but they were less interested in the study of medicine (P < 0.01). The two groups also differed significantly on their perceptions of what was uninteresting about the study of medicine (P < 0.01). The two groups were comparable in gender and entry-level ratios but their distributions across ages and years of study differed significantly (P < 0.01). A majority of respondents agreed with the statements that "it is necessary for medical school graduates to pursue non-clinical careers" and that "medical schools need to offer programs that provide information on such careers." Still, our finding indicates that medical school curricula do not address such needs sufficiently.ConclusionsOur study found some differences in backgrounds and perceptions of the study of medicine in medical students interested in non-clinical careers from their peers. Future studies are suggested to enhance our understanding of medical students" choice of non-clinical careers.

The issue ends with an in-depth review of new technologies that aid in the use of NFP. Project description:ObjectiveThe novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented new stressors to medical student education. This national survey investigated the prevalence of burnout in U.S. medical students interested in pursuing neurosurgical residency during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsA 24-question survey was sent to all American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) medical student chapter members. The abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory (aMBI) was used to measure the following burnout metrics: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Bivariate analyses were conducted and multivariate analyses were performed using a logistic regression models.Results254 medical students were included (response rate of 14.5%). The majority were male (55.1%), White (66.1%), and between their 2nd and 3rd years in medical school (62.6%). Burnout was identified in 38 (15.0%) respondents, a rate lower than reported in the pre-COVID era. In multivariate analysis, burnout was significantly associated with choosing not to pursue, or feeling uncertain about pursuing, a medical career again if given the choice (OR = 3.40, p = 0.0075), having second thoughts about choosing to pursue neurosurgery (OR = 3.47, p = 0.0025), attending a medical program in the Northeast compared to the Southeast (OR = 0.32, p = 0.027) or Southwest U.S. (OR = 0.30, p = 0.046), and indicating that one's future clinical performance will have worsened due to COVID-19 (OR = 2.71, p = 0.025).ConclusionsOur study demonstrates relatively low rates of burnout among U.S. medical students interested in pursuing neurosurgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings also demonstrate multiple factors may aid in early identification of burnout, highlighting potential opportunities for intervention.

Project description:BackgroundCommunication skills are essential to providing patient-centered care. The need for standardized communication skills training is at the forefront of medical school and residency education. We aimed to design and implement a curriculum teaching virtual communications skills to medical students. The purpose of this report is to describe our experience and to offer guidance for training programs developing similar curricula in the future.MethodsThe curriculum was presented in weekly modules over 5 weeks using Zoom technology. We focused on proven strategies for interacting with patients and other providers, adapted to a virtual platform. Skill levels during role-play were assessed by the Simulated Participants and students observing the simulation using the 14-item, physician specific Communication Assessment Tool (CAT). The primary outcome of the CAT is the percentage of "excellent" for each item ranked both years. Participants provided feedback on what worked well or how the module could be improved in open-ended responses.ResultsTwenty-eight and 25 students registered for the course in Year 1 and Year 2, respectively. Students' post-session confidence in their ability to perform target skills was statistically higher than their pre-session scores in most sessions. Modules with the lowest pre-session confidence for both years were "Disclosing a Medical Error" and "Responding to Patient Bias." The mean percentage of students receiving "excellent" scores on individual CAT items ranged from 5 to 73% over the course of both years. Verbal and written feedback in Year 1 provided direction for the curriculum developers to improve the course in Year 2.ConclusionsDeveloping and implementing a new education curriculum is a complex process. We describe an intensive curriculum for medical students as we strive to allow students extra "clinical" time during COVID-related restriction. Project description:We describe the establishment and evaluation of a career-based mentoring scheme (PsychStart) for medical students interested in psychiatry. Medical students reported multiple benefits of mentoring, including enhanced personal and professional development, increased career and clinical knowledge, and broadened exposure to psychiatry. The mentoring scheme was also found to promote and sustain interest in the specialty. Further evaluation is required to determine the long-term effects of mentoring and how this may compare with other undergraduate enrichment activities. We conclude that mentoring in psychiatry could offer innovative solutions for improving recruitment and retention, and for supporting and valuing medical students who demonstrate an early interest in the specialty.

Project description:BackgroundOne estimate suggests that by 2010 more than 30% of a physician's time will be spent using information technology tools. The aim of this study is to assess the information and communication technologies (ICT) skills of medical students in Tanzania. We also report a pilot intervention of peer mentoring training in ICT by medical students from the UK tutoring students in Tanzania.MethodsDesignCross sectional study and pilot intervention study.ParticipantsFourth year medical students (n = 92) attending Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.Main outcome measuresSelf-reported assessment of competence on ICT-related topics and ability to perform specific ICT tasks. Further information related to frequency of computer use (hours per week), years of computer use, reasons for use and access to computers. Skills at specific tasks were reassessed for 12 students following 4 to 6 hours of peer mentoring training.ResultsThe highest levels of competence in generic ICT areas were for email, Internet and file management. For other skills such as word processing most respondents reported low levels of competence. The abilities to perform specific ICT skills were low - less than 60% of the participants were able to perform the core specific skills assessed. A period of approximately 5 hours of peer mentoring training produced an approximate doubling of competence scores for these skills.ConclusionOur study has found a low level of ability to use ICT facilities among medical students in a leading university in sub-Saharan Africa. A pilot scheme utilising UK elective students to tutor basic skills showed potential. Attention is required to develop interventions that can improve ICT skills, as well as computer access, in order to bridge the digital divide.

Project description:IntroductionOphthalmology education during medical school is often very limited. To provide exposure to areas beyond its standard curriculum, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offers mini-elective courses in various disciplines. We developed such a course to provide instruction in the basics of clinical ophthalmology to interested preclinical medical students.MethodsFirst- and second-year medical students electively enrolled in our course (mean number of students per year = 12), which included four sessions combining didactics and hands-on learning. Additionally, each student individually spent time with an ophthalmologist in the operating room. Our course was held each year from 2015 to 2019.ResultsParticipants completed pre- (n = 25) and postsurveys (n = 20), reflecting increased comfort with the ophthalmologic history and physical examination. In 2019, participants also completed pre- and posttests, demonstrating increased knowledge of ophthalmology.DiscussionThe Ophthalmology Mini-Elective is a unique educational tool that introduces the principles of ophthalmology to preclinical medical students, addressing an area of medicine that is generally minimally included in the required curriculum.

Project description:IntroductionRecently, stories depicting social injustices and inequities have gripped the US, leading to protests and other demonstrations of student activism. In response to current events, students at Weill Cornell Medical College identified the need for more diversity inclusion components in the newly developed medical school curriculum. Thus, we developed a student-initiated, student-run elective, Community Perspectives in Medicine, which provides a forum for first-year medical students to interact, and have open discussions, with members of communities most impacted by social and health inequities.MethodsDuring five weekly 2-hour sessions, representatives of different community-based organizations (CBOs) speak with 15 first-year medical students. Invited CBOs represent diverse populations, including LGBT, chronic illness, disabilities, religion, and immigrant health. For each session's first hour, a second-year student facilitates a semistructured interview of the CBO guests focusing on health disparities within their community, challenges experienced with the medical system, and what they wish doctors did differently. Students are encouraged to ask questions, often resulting in a rich dialogue. The session's second part is a debriefing by the student facilitator over a relaxed dinner (without CBO guests).ResultsFourteen of the16 enrolled students attended all five sessions and completed the course evaluation. Satisfaction with the course was high, as 93% of students enrolled rated the course as excellent. The course format, content, and diversity of speakers were rated as excellent by 79%, 86%, and 93%, respectively. Similarly, 71% of students believed there to be excellent applicability to medical practice, and 100% of students thought the timing during first year was excellent.DiscussionWe emphasize the importance of a partnership between CBOs and medical students, thus increasing students' cultural awareness as well as formally involving traditionally disenfranchised communities in medical education. Our project's unique format of safe-space discussion forums and session debriefings enhances critical thinking. Though used with multiple CBOs as an elective, our model can be easily adapted for one session on a specific health disparity.
