Origin of the herringbone reconstruction of Au(111) surface at the atomic scale.

ABSTRACT: The origin of the herringbone reconstruction on Au(111) surface has never been explained properly at the atomic level because the large periodic length (~30 nm) does not allow ab initio simulations of the system and because of the lack of highly accurate empirical force field. We trained a machine learning force field with high accuracy to explore this reconstruction. Our study shows that the lattice deformation in Au deeper layers, which allows the effective relaxation of the densified and anisotropic top layer lattice, is critical for the herringbone reconstruction. The herringbone reconstruction is energetically more favorable than the stripe reconstruction only if the slab thickness exceeds 12 atomic layers. Furthermore, we reveal the high stability of herringbone reconstruction at high temperatures and that a slight strain of about ±0.2% can induce a transition from the herringbone pattern to the stripe pattern, and both agree well with the experimental observations.

Atomic-scale intermolecular interaction of hydrogen with a single VOPc molecule on the Au(111) surface.

Project description:Molecular dynamics of hydrogen molecules (H2) on surfaces and their interactions with other molecules have been studied with the goal of improvement of hydrogen storage devices for energy applications. Recently, the dynamic behavior of a H2 at low temperature has been utilized in scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) for sub-atomic resolution imaging within a single molecule. In this work, we have investigated the intermolecular interaction between H2 and individual vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) molecules on Au(111) substrates by using STM and non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). We measured tunnelling spectra and random telegraphic noise (RTN) on VOPc molecules to reveal the origin of the dynamic behavior of the H2. The tunnelling spectra show switching between two states with different tunnelling conductance as a function of sample bias voltage and RTN is measured near transition voltage between the two states. The spatial variation of the RTN indicates that the two-state fluctuation is dependent on the atomic-scale interaction of H2 with the VOPc molecule. Density functional theory calculations show that a H2 molecule can be trapped by a combination of a tip-induced electrostatic potential well and the potential formed by a VOPc underneath. We suggest the origin of the two-state noise as transition of H2 between minima in these potentials with barrier height of 20-30 meV. In addition, the bias dependent AFM images verify that H2 can be trapped and released at the tip-sample junction.

Packing of Isophthalate Tetracarboxylic Acids on Au(111): Rows and Disordered Herringbone Structures.

Project description:Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has been used to investigate the formation of hydrogen-bonded structures of the isophthalate tetracarboxylic acids, biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid (BPTC), terphenyl-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (TPTC), and quarterphenyl-3,3‴,5,5‴-tetracarboxylic acid (QPTC), via deposition from solution onto Au(111). STM data reveal that ordered structures can be formed from an aqueous solution leading to the formation of rows for the shortest acid BPTC, while the longer molecules TPTC and QPTC adopt a herringbone-like structure with significant degrees of disorder. The influence of solvent and substrate on the molecular ordering is discussed, and density functional theory is used to identify molecular models for these new phases.

Surface assembly and nanofabrication of 1,1,1-tris(mercaptomethyl)heptadecane on Au(111) studied with time-lapse atomic force microscopy.

Project description:The solution self-assembly of multidentate organothiols onto Au(111) was studied in situ using scanning probe nanolithography and time-lapse atomic force microscopy (AFM). Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared from dilute solutions of multidentate thiols were found to assemble slowly, requiring more than six hours to generate films. A clean gold substrate was first imaged in ethanolic media using liquid AFM. Next, a 0.01 mM solution of multidentate thiol was injected into the liquid cell. As time progressed, molecular-level details of the surface changes at different time intervals were captured by successive AFM images. Scanning probe based nanofabrication was accomplished using protocols of nanografting and nanoshaving with n-alkanethiols and a tridentate molecule, 1,1,1-tris(mercaptomethyl)heptadecane (TMMH). Nanografted patterns of TMMH could be inscribed within n-alkanethiol SAMs; however, the molecular packing of the nanopatterns was less homogeneous compared to nanopatterns produced with monothiolates. The multidentate molecules have a more complex assembly pathway than monothiol counterparts, mediated by sequential steps of forming S-Au bonds to the substrate.

Hydration of iodine adsorbed on the Au(111) surface.

Project description:The hydration of halogens has been widely researched because of its close relation with the water desalination and biochemical reactions. In this work, by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we have explored the hydration process of iodine via the Eley-Rideal process on the Au(111) surface. Moreover, the hydration process of iodine with the presence of the NiPc self-assembled network as a template has also been investigated, where the stepwise hydration of iodine at room temperature can be visualized on Au(111).

Atomic Structure and Electronic Properties of Janus SeMoS Monolayers on Au(111).

Project description:Janus SeMoS monolayers (MLs) are synthetic 2D materials with unique electronic properties, as theory predicts, but their experimental exploration has been hindered by the low quality of the samples. Here we report a synthesis of high-quality Janus MLs on gold substrates by thermal exchange reaction taking place at the ML/Au(111) interface. The synthesized Janus SeMoS MLs were characterized by complementary techniques, and insights into the topography and electronic properties of the system were obtained. Specifically, due to the lattice mismatch with the Au(111), a moiré pattern with a periodicity of 2.9 nm was observed. A precise experimental determination of the lattice constant of Janus SeMoS of 3.22 ± 0.01 Å was obtained, and the measured spin-orbit splitting at the K point of the valence band was found to be 170 ± 15 meV, matching well the results of the density functional theory calculations.

Formation of surface states on Pb(111) by Au adsorption.

Project description:Using low-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the lattice and electronic structures of the Pb(111) surface upon the adsorption of Au atoms at the low temperature T = 40 K. Unlike earlier results showing the formation of PbAu-alloy layers at room temperature, we found that Au atoms form a ultra-thin superstructure, Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3, on top of the Pb(111) surface. Moreover, three surface-state bands, S1, S2, and S3, are induced within and immediately adjacent to the Pb bulk projected band gap centered at the surface zone boundary [Formula: see text] at the energies of - 0.02, - 1.05, and - 2.56 eV, respectively. First-principles calculation based on Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3 confirms the measured surface-state bands among which the most interesting are the S1 and S3 surface states. They are derived from surface resonances in Pb(111). Moreover, S1, which disperses across Fermi level, exhibits a large anisotropic Rashba splitting with α of 1.0 and 3.54 eVÅ in the two symmetry directions centered at [Formula: see text]. The corresponding Rashba splitting of S1 band in Cu/Pb(111)-3 × 3 and Ag/Pb(111)-3 × 3 were calculated for comparison.

On-Surface Synthesis of a Dicationic Diazahexabenzocoronene Derivative on the Au(111) Surface.

Project description:The atomically precise control over the size, shape and structure of nanographenes (NGs) or the introduction of heteroatom dopants into their sp2 -carbon lattice confer them valuable electronic, optical and magnetic properties. Herein, we report on the design and synthesis of a hexabenzocoronene derivative embedded with graphitic nitrogen in its honeycomb lattice, achieved via on-surface assisted cyclodehydrogenation on the Au(111) surface. Combined scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy investigations unveil the chemical and electronic structures of the obtained dicationic NG. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements reveal a considerable variation of the local contact potential difference toward lower values with respect to the gold surface, indicative of its positive net charge. Altogether, we introduce the concept of cationic nitrogen doping of NGs on surfaces, opening new avenues for the design of novel carbon nanostructures.

Atomic-scale observation of migration and coalescence of Au nanoclusters on YSZ surface by aberration-corrected STEM.

Project description:Unraveling structural dynamics of noble metal nanoclusters on oxide supports is critical to understanding reaction process and origin of catalytic activity in heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we show that aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy can provide direct atomic-resolution imaging of surface migration, coalescence, and atomic rearrangement of Au clusters on an Y:ZrO₂ (YSZ) support. The high resolution enables us to reveal migration and coalescence process of Au clusters at the atomic scale, and to demonstrate that the coalesced clusters undergo a cooperative atomic rearrangement, which transforms the coherent into incoherent Au/YSZ interface. This approach can help to elucidate atomistic mechanism of catalytic activities and to develop novel catalysts with enhanced functionality.

Decoration of metal oxide surface with {111} form Au nanoparticles using PEGylation.

Project description:The benefit of introducing gold nanoparticles is due to the plasmon relaxation process. The plasmon decay induces various phenomena such as near-field enhancement, hot electron injection, and resonance energy transfer. Shape-controlled octahedral gold nanoparticles can maximize the efficiency of these processes. For practical purposes, a high-coverage decoration method, comparable to physical vapor deposition on a metal oxide semiconductor nanostructure, is indispensable. However, the ligand exchange reaction to attach octahedral gold nanoparticles is limited in aqueous solution due to the inactivity of the gold (111) surface as a result of a densely-packed cetyltrimethylammonium bilayer structure. Herein, we report a controllable high-coverage surface decoration method of octahedral gold nanoparticles on the targeted semiconductor nanostructures via phase transfer by an organic medium with thiolated-polyethylene glycol. Our results deliver an innovative platform for future plasmonic gold nanoparticle applications.
