Heavy-Atom Quantum Tunnelling in Spin Crossovers of Nitrenes.

ABSTRACT: We simulate two recent matrix-isolation experiments at cryogenic temperatures, in which a nitrene undergoes spin crossover from its triplet state to a singlet state via quantum tunnelling. We detail the failure of the commonly applied weak-coupling method (based on a linear approximation of the potentials) in describing these deep-tunnelling reactions. The more rigorous approach of semiclassical golden-rule instanton theory in conjunction with double-hybrid density-functional theory and multireference perturbation theory does, however, provide rate constants and kinetic isotope effects in good agreement with experiment. In addition, these calculations locate the optimal tunnelling pathways, which provide a molecular picture of the reaction mechanism. The reactions involve substantial heavy-atom quantum tunnelling of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms, which unexpectedly even continues to play a role at room temperature.

Competing quantum effects in heavy-atom tunnelling through conical intersections.

Project description:Thermally activated chemical reactions are typically understood in terms of overcoming potential-energy barriers. However, standard rate theories break down in the presence of a conical intersection (CI) because these processes are inherently nonadiabatic, invalidating the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Moreover, CIs give rise to intricate nuclear quantum effects such as tunnelling and the geometric phase, which are neglected by standard trajectory-based simulations and remain largely unexplored in complex molecular systems. We present new semiclassical transition-state theories based on an extension of golden-rule instanton theory to describe nonadiabatic tunnelling through CIs and thus provide an intuitive picture for the reaction mechanism. We apply the method in conjunction with first-principles electronic-structure calculations to the electron transfer in the bis(methylene)-adamantyl cation. Our study reveals a strong competition between heavy-atom tunnelling and geometric-phase effects.

Nuclear spin assisted quantum tunnelling of magnetic monopoles in spin ice.

Project description:Extensive work on single molecule magnets has identified a fundamental mode of relaxation arising from the nuclear-spin assisted quantum tunnelling of nearly independent and quasi-classical magnetic dipoles. Here we show that nuclear-spin assisted quantum tunnelling can also control the dynamics of purely emergent excitations: magnetic monopoles in spin ice. Our low temperature experiments were conducted on canonical spin ice materials with a broad range of nuclear spin values. By measuring the magnetic relaxation, or monopole current, we demonstrate strong evidence that dynamical coupling with the hyperfine fields bring the electronic spins associated with magnetic monopoles to resonance, allowing the monopoles to hop and transport magnetic charge. Our result shows how the coupling of electronic spins with nuclear spins may be used to control the monopole current. It broadens the relevance of the assisted quantum tunnelling mechanism from single molecular spins to emergent excitations in a strongly correlated system.

Macroscopic quantum tunnelling in spin filter ferromagnetic Josephson junctions.

Project description:The interfacial coupling of two materials with different ordered phases, such as a superconductor (S) and a ferromagnet (F), is driving new fundamental physics and innovative applications. For example, the creation of spin-filter Josephson junctions and the demonstration of triplet supercurrents have suggested the potential of a dissipationless version of spintronics based on unconventional superconductivity. Here we demonstrate evidence for active quantum applications of S-F-S junctions, through the observation of macroscopic quantum tunnelling in Josephson junctions with GdN ferromagnetic insulator barriers. We show a clear transition from thermal to quantum regime at a crossover temperature of about 100 mK at zero magnetic field in junctions, which present clear signatures of unconventional superconductivity. Following previous demonstration of passive S-F-S phase shifters in a phase qubit, our result paves the way to the active use of spin filter Josephson systems in quantum hybrid circuits.

Heavy-atom tunnelling in singlet oxygen deactivation predicted by instanton theory with branch-point singularities.

Project description:The reactive singlet state of oxygen (O2) can decay to the triplet ground state nonradiatively in the presence of a solvent. There is a controversy about whether tunnelling is involved in this nonadiabatic spin-crossover process. Semiclassical instanton theory provides a reliable and practical computational method for elucidating the reaction mechanism and can account for nuclear quantum effects such as zero-point energy and multidimensional tunnelling. However, the previously developed instanton theory is not directly applicable to this system because of a branch-point singularity which appears in the flux correlation function. Here we derive a new instanton theory for cases dominated by the singularity, leading to a new picture of tunnelling in nonadiabatic processes. Together with multireference electronic-structure theory, this provides a rigorous framework based on first principles that we apply to calculate the decay rate of singlet oxygen in water. The results indicate a new reaction mechanism that is 27 orders of magnitude faster at room temperature than the classical process through the minimum-energy crossing point. We find significant heavy-atom tunnelling contributions as well as a large temperature-dependent H2O/D2O kinetic isotope effect of approximately 20, in excellent agreement with experiment.

Norcaradiene-Cycloheptatriene Equilibrium: A Heavy-Atom Quantum Tunneling Case.

Project description:The equilibrium between norcaradiene and cycloheptatriene, which has captivated chemists for more than half a century, is revisited by state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Our theoretical data significantly deviate from the experimental results (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 1981, 26, 7791-7792), especially at low temperatures, where isomerization is dominated by heavy-atom tunneling. This effect results in an extremely short half-life for norcaradiene, rendering it undetectable. This work sheds light on this equilibrium, updating the kinetic and thermodynamic data while also expanding the repertoire of organic reactions controlled by this exotic quantum effect.

Probing quantum coherence in single-atom electron spin resonance.

Project description:Spin resonance of individual spin centers allows applications ranging from quantum information technology to atomic-scale magnetometry. To protect the quantum properties of a spin, control over its local environment, including energy relaxation and decoherence processes, is crucial. However, in most existing architectures, the environment remains fixed by the crystal structure and electrical contacts. Recently, spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), in combination with electron spin resonance (ESR), allowed the study of single adatoms and inter-atomic coupling with an unprecedented combination of spatial and energy resolution. We elucidate and control the interplay of an Fe single spin with its atomic-scale environment by precisely tuning the phase coherence time T2 using the STM tip as a variable electrode. We find that the decoherence rate is the sum of two main contributions. The first scales linearly with tunnel current and shows that, on average, every tunneling electron causes one dephasing event. The second, effective even without current, arises from thermally activated spin-flip processes of tip spins. Understanding these interactions allows us to maximize T2 and improve the energy resolution. It also allows us to maximize the amplitude of the ESR signal, which supports measurements even at elevated temperatures as high as 4 K. Thus, ESR-STM allows control of quantum coherence in individual, electrically accessible spins.

Heavy-atom tunnelling in Cu(ii)N<sub>6</sub> complexes: theoretical predictions and experimental manifestation.

Project description:The degenerate rearrangement on Jahn-Teller distorted metal complexes is a promising reaction for the observation of significant heavy atom quantum mechanical tunnelling. Herein, a family of Cu(ii)-N6 complexes are theoretically proven to exhibit rapid dynamical Jahn-Teller tunneling even close to the absolute zero. The manifestation of our predictions apparently appeared in solid state EPR experimental measurements on [Cu(en)3]SO4 more than 40 years ago, without the authors realizing that it was a quantum outcome.

Tunnelling of electrons via the neighboring atom.

Project description:As compared to the intuitive process that the electron emits straight to the continuum from its parent ion, there is an alternative route that the electron may transfer to and be trapped by a neighboring ionic core before the eventual release. Here, we demonstrate that electron tunnelling via the neighboring atomic core is a pronounced process in light-induced tunnelling ionization of molecules by absorbing multiple near-infrared photons. We devised a site-resolved tunnelling experiment using an Ar-Kr+ ion as a prototype system to track the electron tunnelling dynamics from the Ar atom towards the neighboring Kr+ by monitoring its transverse momentum distribution, which is temporally captured into the resonant excited states of the Ar-Kr+ before its eventual releasing. The influence of the Coulomb potential of neighboring ionic cores promises new insights into the understanding and controlling of tunnelling dynamics in complex molecules or environment.

Spin-Vibronic Intersystem Crossing and Molecular Packing Effects in Heavy Atom Free Organic Phosphor.

Project description:We present a detailed investigation into the excited state properties of a planar D3h symmetric azatriangulenetrione, HTANGO, which has received significant interest due to its high solid-state phosphorescence quantum yield and therefore potential as an organic room temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) dye. Using a model linear vibronic coupling Hamiltonian in combination with quantum dynamics simulations, we observe that intersystem crossing (ISC) in HTANGO occurs with a rate of ∼1010 s-1, comparable to benzophenone, an archetypal molecule for fast ISC in heavy metal free molecules. Our simulations demonstrate that the mechanism for fast ISC is associated with the high density of excited triplet states which lie in close proximity to the lowest singlet states, offering multiple channels into the triplet manifold facilitating rapid population transfer. Finally, to rationalize the solid-state emission properties, we use quantum chemistry to investigate the excited state surfaces of the HTANGO dimer, highlighting the influence and importance of the rotational alignment between the two HTANGO molecules in the solid state and how this contributes to high phosphorescence quantum yield.
