Molecular dynamics on quantum annealers.

ABSTRACT: In this work we demonstrate a practical prospect of using quantum annealers for simulation of molecular dynamics. A methodology developed for this goal, dubbed Quantum Differential Equations (QDE), is applied to propagate classical trajectories for the vibration of the hydrogen molecule in several regimes: nearly harmonic, highly anharmonic, and dissociative motion. The results obtained using the D-Wave 2000Q quantum annealer are all consistent and quickly converge to the analytical reference solution. Several alternative strategies for such calculations are explored and it was found that the most accurate results and the best efficiency are obtained by combining the quantum annealer with classical post-processing (greedy algorithm). Importantly, the QDE framework developed here is entirely general and can be applied to solve any system of first-order ordinary nonlinear differential equations using a quantum annealer.

Parallel in time dynamics with quantum annealers.

Project description:Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented increase in experiments and hybrid simulations involving quantum computers. In particular, quantum annealers. There exist a plethora of algorithms promising to outperform classical computers in the near-term future. Here, we propose a parallel in time approach to simulate dynamical systems designed to be executed already on present-day quantum annealers. In essence, purely classical methods for solving dynamics systems are serial. Therefore, their parallelization is substantially limited. In the presented approach, however, the time evolution is rephrased as a ground-state search of a classical Ising model. Such a problem is solved intrinsically in parallel by quantum computers. The main idea is exemplified by simulating the Rabi oscillations generated by a two-level quantum system (i.e. qubit) experimentally.

Unraveling Quantum Annealers using Classical Hardness.

Project description:Recent advances in quantum technology have led to the development and manufacturing of experimental programmable quantum annealing optimizers that contain hundreds of quantum bits. These optimizers, commonly referred to as 'D-Wave' chips, promise to solve practical optimization problems potentially faster than conventional 'classical' computers. Attempts to quantify the quantum nature of these chips have been met with both excitement and skepticism but have also brought up numerous fundamental questions pertaining to the distinguishability of experimental quantum annealers from their classical thermal counterparts. Inspired by recent results in spin-glass theory that recognize 'temperature chaos' as the underlying mechanism responsible for the computational intractability of hard optimization problems, we devise a general method to quantify the performance of quantum annealers on optimization problems suffering from varying degrees of temperature chaos: A superior performance of quantum annealers over classical algorithms on these may allude to the role that quantum effects play in providing speedup. We utilize our method to experimentally study the D-Wave Two chip on different temperature-chaotic problems and find, surprisingly, that its performance scales unfavorably as compared to several analogous classical algorithms. We detect, quantify and discuss several purely classical effects that possibly mask the quantum behavior of the chip.

Computational multiqubit tunnelling in programmable quantum annealers.

Project description:Quantum tunnelling is a phenomenon in which a quantum state traverses energy barriers higher than the energy of the state itself. Quantum tunnelling has been hypothesized as an advantageous physical resource for optimization in quantum annealing. However, computational multiqubit tunnelling has not yet been observed, and a theory of co-tunnelling under high- and low-frequency noises is lacking. Here we show that 8-qubit tunnelling plays a computational role in a currently available programmable quantum annealer. We devise a probe for tunnelling, a computational primitive where classical paths are trapped in a false minimum. In support of the design of quantum annealers we develop a nonperturbative theory of open quantum dynamics under realistic noise characteristics. This theory accurately predicts the rate of many-body dissipative quantum tunnelling subject to the polaron effect. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that quantum tunnelling outperforms thermal hopping along classical paths for problems with up to 200 qubits containing the computational primitive.

Determination and correction of persistent biases in quantum annealers.

Project description:Calibration of quantum computers is essential to the effective utilisation of their quantum resources. Specifically, the performance of quantum annealers is likely to be significantly impaired by noise in their programmable parameters, effectively misspecification of the computational problem to be solved, often resulting in spurious suboptimal solutions. We developed a strategy to determine and correct persistent, systematic biases between the actual values of the programmable parameters and their user-specified values. We applied the recalibration strategy to two D-Wave Two quantum annealers, one at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, and another at D-Wave Systems in Burnaby, Canada. We show that the recalibration procedure not only reduces the magnitudes of the biases in the programmable parameters but also enhances the performance of the device on a set of random benchmark instances.

Power flow analysis using quantum and digital annealers: a discrete combinatorial optimization approach.

Project description:Power flow (PF) analysis is a foundational computational method to study the flow of power in an electrical network. This analysis involves solving a set of non-linear and non-convex differential-algebraic equations. State-of-the-art solvers for PF analysis, therefore, face challenges with scalability and convergence, specifically for large-scale and/or ill-conditioned cases characterized by high penetration of renewable energy sources, among others. The adiabatic quantum computing paradigm has been proven to efficiently find solutions for combinatorial problems in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, and it can potentially address the limitations posed by state-of-the-art PF solvers. For the first time, we propose a novel adiabatic quantum computing approach for efficient PF analysis. Our key contributions are (i) a combinatorial PF algorithm and a modified version that aligns with the principles of PF analysis, termed the adiabatic quantum PF algorithm (AQPF), both of which use Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) and Ising model formulations; (ii) a scalability study of the AQPF algorithm; and (iii) an extension of the AQPF algorithm to handle larger problem sizes using a partitioned approach. Numerical experiments are conducted using different test system sizes on D-Wave's Advantage™ quantum annealer, Fujitsu's digital annealer V3, D-Wave's quantum-classical hybrid annealer, and two simulated annealers running on classical computer hardware. The reported results demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the proposed AQPF algorithm and its potential to speed up the PF analysis process while handling ill-conditioned cases using quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms.

Hybrid quantum annealing via molecular dynamics.

Project description:A novel quantum-classical hybrid scheme is proposed to efficiently solve large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. The key concept is to introduce a Hamiltonian dynamics of the classical flux variables associated with the quantum spins of the transverse-field Ising model. Molecular dynamics of the classical fluxes can be used as a powerful preconditioner to sort out the frozen and ambivalent spins for quantum annealers. The performance and accuracy of our smooth hybridization in comparison to the standard classical algorithms (the tabu search and the simulated annealing) are demonstrated by employing the MAX-CUT and Ising spin-glass problems.

Quantum-Chemical Quasi-Docking for Molecular Dynamics Calculations.

Project description:The quantum quasi-docking procedure is used to compare the docking accuracies of two quantum-chemical semiempirical methods, namely, PM6-D3H4X and PM7. Quantum quasi-docking is an approximation to quantum docking. In quantum docking, it is necessary to search directly for the global minimum of the energy of the protein-ligand complex calculated by the quantum-chemical method. In quantum quasi-docking, firstly, we look for a wide spectrum of low-energy minima, calculated using the MMFF94 force field, and secondly, we recalculate the energies of all these minima using the quantum-chemical method, and among these recalculated energies we determine the lowest energy and the corresponding ligand position. Both PM6-D3H4X and PM7 are novel methods that describe well-dispersion interactions, hydrogen and halogen bonds. The PM6-D3H4X and PM7 methods are used with the COSMO implicit solvent model as it is implemented in the MOPAC program. The comparison is made for 25 high quality protein-ligand complexes. Firstly, the docking positioning accuracies have been compared, and we demonstrated that PM7+COSMO provides better positioning accuracy than PM6-D3H4X. Secondly, we found that PM7+COSMO demonstrates a much higher correlation between the calculated and measured protein-ligand binding enthalpies than PM6-D3H4X. For future quantum docking PM7+COSMO is preferable, but the COSMO model must be improved.

Modeling quantum nuclei with perturbed path integral molecular dynamics.

Project description:The quantum nature of nuclear motions plays a vital role in the structure, stability, and thermodynamics of molecules and materials. The standard approach to model nuclear quantum fluctuations in chemical and biological systems is to use path-integral molecular dynamics. Unfortunately, conventional path-integral simulations can have an exceedingly large computational cost due to the need to employ an excessive number of coupled classical subsystems (beads) for quantitative accuracy. Here, we combine perturbation theory with the Feynman-Kac imaginary-time path integral approach to quantum mechanics and derive an improved non-empirical partition function and estimators to calculate converged quantum observables. Our perturbed path-integral (PPI) method requires the same ingredients as the conventional approach, but increases the accuracy and efficiency of path integral simulations by an order of magnitude. Results are presented for the thermodynamics of fundamental model systems, an empirical water model containing 256 water molecules within periodic boundary conditions, and ab initio simulations of nitrogen and benzene molecules. For all of these examples, PPI simulations with 4 to 8 classical beads recover the nuclear quantum contribution to the total energy and heat capacity at room temperature within a 3% accuracy, paving the way toward seamless modeling of nuclear quantum effects in realistic molecules and materials.

Inelastic electron scattering induced quantum coherence in molecular dynamics.

Project description:Quantum coherence is pivotal in various applications ranging from chemical control to quantum computing. An example of its manifestation in molecular dynamics is inversion symmetry breaking in the photodissociation of homonuclear diatomic molecules. On the other hand, the dissociative attachment of an incoherent electron also induces such coherent dynamics. However, these processes are resonant and occur for projectiles with a specific energy. Here we present the most general scenario of non-resonant inelastic electron scattering inducing such a quantum coherence in molecular dynamics. The ion-pair formation (H+ + H─) that proceeds after the electron impact excitation of H2 shows a forward-backward asymmetry about the incoming electron beam. Simultaneous transfer of multiple angular momentum quanta during the electron collision induces the underlying coherence in the system. The non-resonant nature of this process makes this effect generic and points to its possible prevalent role in particle collision processes, including electron-induced chemistry.

A quantum chemical molecular dynamics repository of solvated ions.

Project description:The importance of ion-solvent interactions in predicting specific ion effects in contexts ranging from viral activity through to electrolyte viscosity cannot be underestimated. Moreover, investigations of specific ion effects in nonaqueous systems, highly relevant to battery technologies, biochemical systems and colloid science, are severely limited by data deficiency. Here, we report IonSolvR - a collection of more than 3,000 distinct nanosecond-scale ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of ions in aqueous and non-aqueous solvent environments at varying effective concentrations. Density functional tight binding (DFTB) is used to detail the solvation structure of up to 55 solutes in 28 different protic and aprotic solvents. DFTB is a fast quantum chemical method, and as such enables us to bridge the gap between efficient computational scaling and maintaining accuracy, while using an internally-consistent simulation technique. We validate the database against experimental data and provide guidance for accessing individual IonSolvR records.
