Dataset of parent-child hyperscanning functional near-infrared spectroscopy recordings.

ABSTRACT: The term "hyperscanning" refers to the simultaneous recording of multiple individuals' brain activity. As a methodology, hyperscanning allows the investigation of brain-to-brain synchrony. Despite being a promising technique, there is a limited number of publicly available functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning recordings. In this paper, we report a dataset of fNIRS recordings from the prefrontal cortical (PFC) activity of 33 mother-child dyads and 29 father-child dyads. Data was recorded while the parent-child dyads participated in an experiment with two sessions: a passive video attention task and a free play session. Dyadic metadata, parental psychological traits, behavioural annotations of the play sessions and information about the video stimuli complementing the dataset of fNIRS signals are described. The dataset presented here can be used to design, implement, and test novel fNIRS analysis techniques, new hyperscanning analysis tools, as well as investigate the PFC activity in participants of different ages when they engage in passive viewing tasks and active interactive tasks.

Project description:Experiencing frustration while driving can harm cognitive processing, result in aggressive behavior and hence negatively influence driving performance and traffic safety. Being able to automatically detect frustration would allow adaptive driver assistance and automation systems to adequately react to a driver's frustration and mitigate potential negative consequences. To identify reliable and valid indicators of driver's frustration, we conducted two driving simulator experiments. In the first experiment, we aimed to reveal facial expressions that indicate frustration in continuous video recordings of the driver's face taken while driving highly realistic simulator scenarios in which frustrated or non-frustrated emotional states were experienced. An automated analysis of facial expressions combined with multivariate logistic regression classification revealed that frustrated time intervals can be discriminated from non-frustrated ones with accuracy of 62.0% (mean over 30 participants). A further analysis of the facial expressions revealed that frustrated drivers tend to activate muscles in the mouth region (chin raiser, lip pucker, lip pressor). In the second experiment, we measured cortical activation with almost whole-head functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while participants experienced frustrating and non-frustrating driving simulator scenarios. Multivariate logistic regression applied to the fNIRS measurements allowed us to discriminate between frustrated and non-frustrated driving intervals with higher accuracy of 78.1% (mean over 12 participants). Frustrated driving intervals were indicated by increased activation in the inferior frontal, putative premotor and occipito-temporal cortices. Our results show that facial and cortical markers of frustration can be informative for time resolved driver state identification in complex realistic driving situations. The markers derived here can potentially be used as an input for future adaptive driver assistance and automation systems that detect driver frustration and adaptively react to mitigate it.

Project description:IntroductionIn neuromarketing, a recently developing, inter-disciplinary field combining neuroscience and marketing, neurophysiological responses have been applied to understand consumers' behaviors. While many studies have focused on explicit attitudes, few have targeted implicit aspects. To explore the possibility of measuring implicit desire for a product, we focused on functional impulsivity related to obtaining a product as a reward and devised a product-rewarded traffic light task (PRTLT). The PRTLT requires participants to take risks under time pressure in order for them to maximize rewards in the form of commercial products, with the brand of products being an independent variable. Thus, we explored the feasibility of applying a PRTLT in a neuromarketing context to implicitly differentiate between the perceived value of products and supported our data with neurophysiological evidence obtained using fNIRS to concurrently monitor cortical activation.MethodsThirty healthy students were asked to perform the PRTLT. We compared participants' functional impulsivity toward two different chocolate products that had obviously different values. Along with their behavioral responses, participants' cerebral hemodynamic responses during the PRTLT were measured using fNIRS covering the lateral prefrontal cortices and the neighboring regions. We conducted adaptive general linear model (GLM) analysis for hemodynamic responses. First, we identified the regions involved in the PRTLT. Second, we compared activation patterns between expensive and inexpensive conditions.ResultsBehavioral analysis confirmed that the expensive condition trended toward producing a higher PRTLT score than did the inexpensive condition. fNIRS neuroimaging analysis showed task-derived activation in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and frontopolar cortex (FPC). Moreover, we found significant differences between expensive and inexpensive conditions in the cortical activations in the FPC and the left-DLPFC.ConclusionThese results imply that the two products evoked different functional impulsivity, and the hemodynamic responses reflect that. Thus, we concluded that it is possible to observe differences in demand for products using a PRTLT that evokes functional impulsivity. The current study presents a new possibility in neuromarketing research of observing differences between consumers' covert attitudes toward commercially available products, possibly providing a neural basis related to hidden needs for some products.

Project description:ObjectiveAlthough psychological research indicating the synchronous activities can promote interpersonal cooperation, thus far there is no direct evidence that two-person synchronous exercise effectively enhances interpersonal cooperative behaviors in Physical exercise field. This suggests that, although synchronization phenomenon is widespread in sports and is considered a potential tool for enhancing teamwork, its specific effects and functioning mechanisms still need to be clarified by further scientific research. This study intends to use two-person synchronized cycling exercise to investigate the synchronized exercise effect on interpersonal cooperative behavior and its underlying neural mechanisms.MethodsEighty college students without regular exercise habits will be randomly assigned to the experimental group (10 male dyads and 10 female dyads) and the control group (10 male dyads and 10 female dyads). During the experiment, dyads in the experimental group performed a 30-minute synchronized cycling exercise with synchronized pedaling movements; dyads in the control group rested sedentary in the same environment for 30 minutes. Interpersonal cooperative behavior was assessed with the Prisoner's Dilemma task, and the interpersonal neural synchronization(INS) data were collected in the prefrontal cortex using near-infrared hyperscanning.ResultsThis study compared behavior and brain activity before and after synchronous exercise. Behavioral results revealed that, compared to pre-exercise, dyads in the post-exercise had higher average cooperation rates, higher cooperation efficiency and shorter cooperation response times. Compared to post-sedentary, dyads in the post-exercise had shorter cooperation response times and higher cooperation efficiency. Furthermore, brain data showed that,compared to pre-exercise, dyads in the post-exercise had stronger INS in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC), whereas the dyads in the post-exercise had stronge INS in the DLPFC compared to post-sedentary. After controlling for dyads' anxiety and mood states, this study also found a marginally significant negative correlation between INS differences in the left DLPFC and cooperation response time differences.ConclusionsThis research confirms, from both behavioral and neuroscience perspectives, that one synchronization cycle can significantly enhance interpersonal cooperative behavior, and this positive effect is closely associated with increased INS in the left DLPFC. This study provides new insights into understanding how positive interactive exercises promote interpersonal cooperation through specific neural mechanisms.
