The Reaction Behavior of 2CaO·SiO₂ with CaO-SiO₂-FeO-P₂O₅ Slag.

ABSTRACT: It is important to clarify the reaction behavior of 2CaO·SiO₂ (C₂S) during hot metal dephosphorization. In this study, C₂S was prepared and added to steel slag to investigate the reaction of C₂S particles with CaO-SiO₂-FeO-P₂O₅ slag at 1723 K. The diffusion coefficient of phosphorus in C₂S was calculated. In addition, the influence of the addition of BaO to C₂S was discussed. The results show that the diffusion coefficient of phosphorus in C₂S is 9.23 × 10^-14 m²·s^-1. The Ca in C₂S can be replaced by Ba. Small particles in the solid solution were easily generated from the C₂S body by the addition of BaO, which is beneficial for improving the phosphorus partition between the C₂S solid phase and the liquid phase of the slag.

Project description:Accelerated material development for refractory ceramics triggers possibilities in context to enhanced energy efficiency for industrial processes. Here, the gathering of comprehensive material data is essential. High temperature-confocal laser scanning microscopy (HT-CLSM) displays a highly suitable in-situ method to study the underlying dissolution kinetics in the slag over time. A major drawback concerns the efficient and accurate processing of the collected image data. Here, we introduce an attention encoder-decoder convolutional neural network enabling the fully automated evaluation of the particle dissolution rate with a precision of 99.1%. The presented approach provides accurate and efficient analysis capabilities with high statistical gain and is highly resilient to image quality changes. The prediction model allows an automated diameter evaluation of the MgO particles' dissolution in the silicate slag for different temperature settings and various HT-CLSM data sets. Moreover, it is not limited to HT-CLSM image data and can be applied to various domains.

Novel procedure of CO2 capture of the CaO sorbent activator on the reaction of one-part alkali-activated slag.

Project description:CaO derived naturally from limestone or dolomite is an inexpensive and widely available sorbent. Understanding the mechanisms of CaO carbonation at ambient temperature under the assistance of H2O is important for predicting the reaction of CaO in complex environments and designing novel CaO materials. In this study, we found that the reaction rate of alkali-activated slag is controlled by the CaCO3 layer on a partially carbonized CaO alkali activator. The size of the sorbent increased after the adsorption reaction and the physically adsorbed water in the pores accelerated the carbonation. The carbonation process was governed by CO2 diffusion. When the carbonation conversion rate reached 2-6%, the setting time increased rapidly with the increase in the carbonation rate. This is because the surface of the activator was modified by the thickened CaCO3 product layer, which increased the diffusional resistance and thus prolonged the setting time of the alkali-activated slag.

Novel CaO-SiO2-P2O5 Nanobioglass Activated with Hafnium Phthalocyanine.

Project description:Bioactive glasses are materials which can be used in medicine for regeneration of hard and soft tissues. Their functionalization with active molecules or addition to composites broaden significantly the possible range of glass applications. Hereby, we describe photoactive nanoparticles of CaO-SiO2-P2O5 glass modified with dichlorohafnium (IV) phthalocyanine. The low-temperature, sol-gel based reverse micelle method was proposed for the synthesis, which allowed introduction of metal organic molecules into the glass composition. The morphology, structure, and composition of the material was described showing that spherical but agglomerated glass nanoparticles (size below 100 nm) were obtained in the ternary system. It was also shown that optical properties of the phthalocyanine complex were maintained after immobilization of the dye in the glass. The photoluminescence and generation of singlet oxygen molecules were observed under the light irradiation of the glass.

Influence of Ceria Addition on Crystallization Behavior and Properties of Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses in the SiO2-CaO-P2O5-CeO2 System.

Project description:Knowledge of the crystallization stability of bioactive glasses (BGs) is a key factor in developing porous scaffolds for hard tissue engineering. Thus, the crystallization behavior of three mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) in the 70SiO2-(26-x)CaO-4P2O5-xCeO2 system (x stands for 0, 1 and 5 mol. %, namely MBG(0/1/5)Ce), prepared using the sol-gel method coupled with the evaporation-induced self-assembly method (EISA), was studied. A thermal analysis of the multiple-component crystallization exotherms from the DSC scans was performed using the Kissinger method. The main crystalline phases of Ca5(PO4)2.823(CO3)0.22O, CaSiO3 and CeO2 were confirmed to be generated by the devitrification of the MBG with 5% CeO2, MBG5Ce. Increasing the ceria content triggered a reduction in the first crystallization temperature while ceria segregation took place. The amount of segregated ceria of the annealed MBG5Ce decreased as the annealing temperature increased. The optimum processing temperature range to avoid the crystallization of the MBG(0/1/5)Ce powders was established.

Estimation of TiO2-FeO-Na2O slag viscosity through molecular dynamics simulations for an energy efficient ilmenite smelting process.

Project description:Along with the increasing demand for the TiO2 pigment, the ilmenite smelting process has also become significant because it can utilize both rock- and sand-type ilmenite. However, due to the high liquidus temperature of the TiO2 slag system, the smelting process is highly energy consuming. In the present study, the viscosity of molten ilmenite slag was estimated using molecular dynamic simulations at a high temperature to achieve an appropriate and efficient slag design. To verify the validity of the simulation technique, experimental measurements were performed in parallel and their results were compared. The effects of FeO and Na2O addition on viscosity of TiO2 slag were also investigated. The addition of Na2O as a flux enhanced the ilmenite smelting process by not only lowering the liquidus temperature but also slowing the drastic viscosity increase. Statistical information obtained from the molecular dynamic simulations revealed a three-dimensional TiO6 octahedral network structure. The relationship between viscosity and structural change with varying FeO and Na2O concentrations was explored considering the coordination number of Ti and various bonding types.

Role of partial molar enthalpy of oxides on Soret effect in high-temperature CaO-SiO2 melts.

Project description:The Soret effect or thermodiffusion is the temperature-gradient driven diffusion in a multicomponent system. Two important conclusions have been obtained for the Soret effect in multicomponent silicate melts: first, the SiO2 component concentrates in the hot region; and second, heavier isotopes concentrate in the cold region more than lighter isotopes. For the second point, the isotope fractionation can be explained by the classical mechanical collisions between pairs of particles. However, as for the first point, no physical model has been reported to answer why the SiO2 component concentrates in the hot region. We try to address this issue by simulating the composition dependence of the Soret effect in CaO-SiO2 melts with nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and determining through a comparison of the results with those calculated from the Kempers model that partial molar enthalpy is one of the dominant factors in this phenomenon.

Ferromagnetic-like behavior of Bi0.9La0.1FeO3-KBr nanocomposites.

Project description:We studied magnetostatic response of the Bi0.9La0.1FeO3- KBr composites (BLFO-KBr) consisting of nanosized (≈100 nm) ferrite Bi0.9La0.1FeO3 (BLFO) conjugated with fine grinded ionic conducting KBr. When the fraction of KBr is rather small (less than 15 wt%) the magnetic response of the composite is very weak and similar to that observed for the BLFO (pure KBr matrix without Bi1-xLaxFeO3 has no magnetic response as anticipated). However, when the fraction of KBr increases above 15%, the magnetic response of the composite changes substantially and the field dependence of magnetization reveals ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop with a remanent magnetization about 0.14 emu/g and coercive field about 1.8 Tesla (at room temperature). Nothing similar to the ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop can be observed in Bi1-zLazFeO3 ceramics with z ≤ 0.15, which magnetization quasi-linearly increases with magnetic field. Different physical mechanisms were considered to explain the unusual experimental results for BLFO-KBr nanocomposites, but only those among them, which are highly sensitive to the interaction of antiferromagnetic Bi0.9La0.1FeO3 with ionic conductor KBr, can be relevant.

Giant Faraday Rotation through Ultrasmall Fe0n Clusters in Superparamagnetic FeO-SiO2 Vitreous Films.

Project description:Magnetooptical (MO) glasses and, in particular, Faraday rotators are becoming key components in lasers and optical information processing, light switching, coding, filtering, and sensing. The common design of such Faraday rotator materials follows a simple path: high Faraday rotation is achieved by maximizing the concentration of paramagnetic ion species in a given matrix material. However, this approach has reached its limits in terms of MO performance; hence, glass-based materials can presently not be used efficiently in thin film MO applications. Here, a novel strategy which overcomes this limitation is demonstrated. Using vitreous films of xFeO·(100 - x)SiO2, unusually large Faraday rotation has been obtained, beating the performance of any other glassy material by up to two orders of magnitude. It is shown that this is due to the incorporation of small, ferromagnetic clusters of atomic iron which are generated in line during laser deposition and rapid condensation of the thin film, generating superparamagnetism. The size of these clusters underbids the present record of metallic Fe incorporation and experimental verification in glass matrices.

Synthesis of FeO@SiO2-DNA core-shell engineered nanostructures for rapid adsorption of heavy metals in aqueous solutions.

Project description:Creating novel and innovative nanostructures is a challenge, aiming to discover nanomaterials with promising properties for environmental remediation. In this study, the physicochemical and adsorption properties of a heterogeneous nanostructure are evaluated for the rapid removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Core-shell nanostructures are prepared using iron oxide cores and silica dioxide shells. The core is synthesized via the co-precipitation method and modified in situ with citric acid to grow a carboxyl layer. The shell was hydrolyzed/condensed and then functionalized with amine groups for ds-DNA condensation via electrostatic interaction. The characterization techniques revealed functional FeO@SiO2-DNA nanostructures with good crystallinity and superparamagnetic response (31.5 emu g-1). The predominant superparamagnetic nature is attributed to the citric acid coating. This improves the dispersion and stability of the magnetic cores through the reduction of the dipolar-dipolar interaction and the enhancement of the spin coordination. The rapid adsorption mechanism of FeO@SiO2-DNA was evaluated through the removal of Pb(ii), As(iii), and Hg(ii). A rapid adsorption rate is observed in the first 15 min, attributed to a heterogeneous chemisorption mechanism based on electrostatic interactions. FeO@SiO2-DNA shows higher adsorption efficiency of 69% for Pb(ii) removal compared to As(iii) (51%) and Hg(ii) (41%). The selectivity towards Pb(ii) is attributed to the similar acid nature to ds-DNA, where the ionic strength interaction provides good affinity and stability. The facile synthesis and rapid adsorption suggest a promising nanostructure for the remediation of water sources contaminated with heavy metal ions and can be extended to other complex molecules.

Role of Nanoscale Inhomogeneities in Co2FeO4 Catalysts during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Spinel-type catalysts are promising anode materials for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), exhibiting low overpotentials and providing long-term stability. In this study, we compared two structurally equal Co2FeO4 spinels with nominally identical stoichiometry and substantially different OER activities. In particular, one of the samples, characterized by a metastable precatalyst state, was found to quickly achieve its steady-state optimum operation, while the other, which was initially closer to the ideal crystallographic spinel structure, never reached such a state and required 168 mV higher potential to achieve 1 mA/cm2. In addition, the enhanced OER activity was accompanied by a larger resistance to corrosion. More specifically, using various ex situ, quasi in situ, and operando methods, we could identify a correlation between the catalytic activity and compositional inhomogeneities resulting in an X-ray amorphous Co2+-rich minority phase linking the crystalline spinel domains in the as-prepared state. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that these Co2+-rich domains transform during OER to structurally different Co3+-rich domains. These domains appear to be crucial for enhancing OER kinetics while exhibiting distinctly different redox properties. Our work emphasizes the necessity of the operando methodology to gain fundamental insight into the activity-determining properties of OER catalysts and presents a promising catalyst concept in which a stable, crystalline structure hosts the disordered and active catalyst phase.
