First Example of a Heptazine-Porphyrin Dyad; Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties.

ABSTRACT: We have prepared the first example of a porphyrin linked to an heptazine photoactive antenna. The two entities, linked with an alkyl spacer, demonstrate the activity of both active moieties. While they behave electrochemically independantly, on the other hand the spectroscopy shows the existence of energy transfer between both partners.

Synthesis and Properties of NitroHPHAC: The First Example of Substitution Reaction on HPHAC.

Project description:Hexapyrrolohexaazacoronene (HPHAC) is one of the N-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in which six pyrroles are fused circularly around a benzene. Despite the recent development of HPHAC analogues, there is no report on direct introduction of functional groups into the HPHAC skeleton. This work reports the first example of nitration reaction of decaethylHPHAC. The structures of nitrodecaethylHPHAC including neutral and two oxidized species (radical cation and dication), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character, and global aromaticity of the dication are discussed.

Significantly improved electrocatalytic oxygen reduction by an asymmetrical Pacman dinuclear cobalt(ii) porphyrin-porphyrin dyad.

Project description:Pacman dinuclear CoII triphenylporphyrin-tri(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin 1 and dinuclear CoII bis-tri(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin 2, anchored at the two meso-positions of a benzene linker, are synthesized and examined as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Both dinuclear Co bisporphyrins are more efficient and selective than corresponding mononuclear CoII tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin 3 and CoII tetraphenylporphyrin 4 for the four-electron electrocatalytic reduction of O2 to water. Significantly, although the ORR selectivities of the two dinuclear Co bisporphyrins are similar to each other, 1 outperforms 2, in terms of larger catalytic ORR currents and lower overpotentials. Electrochemical studies showed different redox behaviors of the two Co sites of 1: the CoIII/CoII reduction of the Co-TPP (TPP = triphenylporphyrin) site is well-behind that of the Co-TPFP (TPFP = tri(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin) site by 440 mV. This difference indicated their different roles in the ORR: CoII-TPFP is likely the O2 binding and reduction site, while CoIII-TPP, which is generated by the oxidation of CoII-TPP on electrodes, may function as a Lewis acid to assist the O2 binding and activation. The positively charged CoIII-TPP will have through-space charge interactions with the negatively charged O2-adduct unit, which will reduce the activation energy barrier for the ORR. This effect of Co-TPP closely resembles that of the CuB site of metalloenzyme cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), which catalyzes the biological reduction of O2. This work represents a rare example of asymmetrical dinuclear metal catalysts, which can catalyze the 4e reduction of O2 with high selectivity and significantly improved activity.

Iron porphyrin carbenes as catalytic intermediates: structures, Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopic properties, and bonding.

Project description:Iron porphyrin carbenes (IPCs) are thought to be intermediates involved in the metabolism of various xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, as well as in chemical reactions catalyzed by metalloporphyrins and engineered P450s. While early work proposed IPCs to contain Fe(II), more recent work invokes a double-bond description of the iron-carbon bond, similar to that found in Fe(IV) porphyrin oxenes. Reported herein is the first quantum chemical investigation of IPC Mössbauer and NMR spectroscopic properties, as well as their electronic structures, together with comparisons to ferrous heme proteins and an Fe(IV) oxene model. The results provide the first accurate predictions of the experimental spectroscopic observables as well as the first theoretical explanation of their electrophilic nature, as deduced from experiment. The preferred resonance structure is Fe(II)←{:C(X)Y}(0) and not Fe(IV)={C(X)Y}(2-), a result that will facilitate research on IPC reactivities in various chemical and biochemical systems.

Synthesis, Kinetic Study, and Spectroscopic Analysis of Peroxidase-like Pinch-Porphyrin Fe(III) Complexes.

Project description:In the present manuscript, we report the kinetic and spectroscopic analysis of six new pinch-porphyrins: protoporphyrin-picpenta 1, mesoporphyrin-picpenta 2, deuteroporphyrin-picpenta 3, protoporphyrin-picocta 4, mesoporphyrin-picocta 5, and deuteroporphyrin-picocta 6. The Michaelis-Menten enzymatic pathway and the guaiacol test confirmed the ability of the compounds to function like new peroxidase models. UV-vis, 1H NMR, and electron spin resonance studies are in accordance with porphyrin-Fe(III) molecules with the quantum phenomena called quantum mixed spin (qms, s = 3/2, s = 5/2). Importantly, the influence of the presence of the s = 3/2 spin state in the compounds and its critical role for the catalytic capacity is proven here, which was the original hypothesis in our research group. The compounds with higher populations of the s = 3/2 spin state have increased peroxidase activity.

Oligosilanyl-Bridged Biscarbazoles: Structure, Synthesis, and Spectroscopic Properties.

Project description:Oligosilanyl-bridged systems are expected to give rise to unique optoelectronic properties because of σ-π conjugation between the Si-Si σ orbital and the aryl π orbital. Herein, we synthesized a small series of novel biscarbazoles bridged with permethylated oligosilanyl units (-[Si(CH3)2]n-, n = 1-4) and examined their spectroscopic properties in detail. In the target molecules BCzSin , n = 2-4, the efficient σ-π conjugation elevated the highest occupied molecular orbital energy level with no influence on the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. In the solid state, the emission full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of all the compounds narrowed significantly, while the emission efficiency increased and the emission color of carbazole was retained. This research provided a very simple and general way of subtly manipulating the electronic properties of organic materials to construct an emissive color-retaining system for multifunctional applications.

Spectroscopic identification of reactive porphyrin motions.

Project description:Nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) reveals the vibrational dynamics of a Mössbauer probe nucleus. Here, (57)Fe NRVS measurements yield the complete spectrum of Fe vibrations in halide complexes of iron porphyrins. Iron porphine serves as a useful symmetric model for the more complex spectrum of asymmetric heme molecules that contribute to numerous essential biological processes. Quantitative comparison with the vibrational density of states (VDOS) predicted for the Fe atom by density functional theory calculations unambiguously identifies the correct sextet ground state in each case. These experimentally authenticated calculations then provide detailed normal mode descriptions for each observed vibration. All Fe-ligand vibrations are clearly identified despite the high symmetry of the Fe environment. Low frequency molecular distortions and acoustic lattice modes also contribute to the experimental signal. Correlation matrices compare vibrations between different molecules and yield a detailed picture of how heme vibrations evolve in response to (a) halide binding and (b) asymmetric placement of porphyrin side chains. The side chains strongly influence the energetics of heme doming motions that control Fe reactivity, which are easily observed in the experimental signal.

Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of β-triazoloporphyrin-xanthone dyads.

Project description:A novel series of β-triazoloporphyrin-xanthone conjugates and xanthone-bridged β-triazoloporphyrin dyads has been synthesized in moderate to good yields through Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of copper(II) 2-azido-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin or zinc(II) 2-azidomethyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin with various alkyne derivatives of xanthones in DMF containing CuSO4 and ascorbic acid at 80 °C. Furthermore, these metalloporphyrins underwent demetalation under acidic conditions to afford the corresponding free-base porphyrins in good to excellent yields. After successful spectroscopic characterization, these porphyrins have been evaluated for their photophysical properties. The preliminary results revealed a bathochromic shift in the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra of these porphyrin-xanthone dyads.

Cobaltoceniumselenolate Gold(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Structural and Anticancer Properties.

Project description:Cobaltoceniumselenolate is an unusual, highly air-sensitive, mesoionic compound containing a very soft anionic selenium donor atom. Here we explore its coordination chemistry with Au(I) metal centers and show that its hetero- and homoleptic gold complexes are highly colored, air-stable compounds, which were characterized by 1H/13C/31P/77Se NMR, IR, UV-Vis, HR-MS and single crystal XRD. Cytotoxicity of these polar, water-soluble complexes was studied against various standard cancer cell lines (A549MDA-MB-231, HT-29) revealing good anticancer activity of all three complexes.

β,β-Directly Linked Porphyrin Rings: Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, and Fullerene Binding.

Project description:Cyclic porphyrin oligomers have been studied as models for photosynthetic light-harvesting antenna complexes and as potential receptors for supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis of unprecedented β,β-directly linked cyclic zinc porphyrin oligomers, the trimer (CP3) and tetramer (CP4), by Yamamoto coupling of a 2,3-dibromoporphyrin precursor. Their three-dimensional structures were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The minimum-energy geometries of CP3 and CP4 have propeller and saddle shapes, respectively, as calculated using density functional theory. Their different geometries result in distinct photophysical and electrochemical properties. The smaller dihedral angles between the porphyrin units in CP3, compared with CP4, result in stronger π-conjugation, splitting the ultraviolet-vis absorption bands and shifting them to longer wavelengths. Analysis of the crystallographic bond lengths indicates that the central benzene ring of the CP3 is partially aromatic [harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) 0.52], whereas the central cyclooctatetraene ring of the CP4 is non-aromatic (HOMA -0.02). The saddle-shaped structure of CP4 makes it a ditopic receptor for fullerenes, with affinity constants of (1.1 ± 0.4) × 105 M-1 for C70 and (2.2 ± 0.1) × 104 M-1 for C60, respectively, in toluene solution at 298 K. The formation of a 1:2 complex with C60 is confirmed by NMR titration and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
