The contradictory effects of coffee intake on periodontal health: a systematic review of experimental and observational studies.

ABSTRACT: Background: Drinking coffee is known to have both positive and negative aftermath on periodontal health. The current study is aiming to systematically review the impact of coffee consumption on periodontal health status. Methods: An article search was carried out in two electronic databases (PUBMED and Web of Sciences). All type of experimental and observational studies were included. The assessment of the included articles were conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. Data were analyzed qualitatively. Result: A total of 10 articles were included in this study. Most (5) of the studies discovered a negative correlation between coffee intake and periodontal health, while 4 other studies found the protective effect of daily coffee consumption against alveolar bone loss. Last, only one study found that coffee intake did not relate with periodontitis. Conclusion: The effect of coffee consumption on periodontal health was fragmented since coffee has complex components that may give either beneficial effects or negative impact on periodontal health.

Project description:There is a growing interest in assessing dietary intake more accurately across different population groups, and biomarkers have emerged as a complementary tool to replace traditional dietary assessment methods. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature available and evaluate the applicability and validity of biomarkers of legume intake reported across various observational and intervention studies. A systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Knowledge identified 44 studies which met the inclusion criteria for the review. Results from observational studies focused on soy or soy-based foods and demonstrated positive correlations between soy intake and urinary, plasma or serum isoflavonoid levels in different population groups. Similarly, intervention studies demonstrated increased genistein and daidzein levels in urine and plasma following soy intake. Both genistein and daidzein exhibited dose-response relationships. Other isoflavonoid levels such as O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA) and equol were also reported to increase following soy consumption. Using a developed scoring system, genistein and daidzein can be considered as promising candidate markers for soy consumption. Furthermore, genistein and daidzein also served as good estimates of soy intake as evidenced from long-term exposure studies marking their status as validated biomarkers. On the contrary, only few studies indicated proposed biomarkers for pulses intake, with pipecolic acid and S-methylcysteine reported as markers reflecting dry bean consumption, unsaturated aliphatic, hydroxyl-dicarboxylic acid related to green beans intake and trigonelline reported as marker of peas consumption. However, data regarding criteria such as specificity, dose-response and time-response relationship, reliability, and feasibility to evaluate the validity of these markers is lacking. In conclusion, despite many studies suggesting proposed biomarkers for soy, there is a lack of information on markers of other different subtypes of legumes. Further discovery and validation studies are needed in order to identify reliable biomarkers of legume intake.

Project description:Insufficient intake of total fruits and vegetables is linked to an increased cancer risk, but the relation is not understood for dried fruits. Dried fruits are generally perceived, by both consumers and researchers, as a less attractive but shelf-stable equivalent to fresh fruits and constitute a small but significant proportion of modern diets. Chemical compositions of raw and dried fruits, however, may differ substantially. Several clinical and laboratory intervention studies have reported the protective effects of dehydrated fruits against the progression of some cancers and the modulating effects of dried fruits on common cancer risk factors. In this systematic review, we identified, summarized, and critically evaluated 9 prospective cohort and 7 case-control studies that examined the relations between traditional dried fruit (raisins, prunes, dates) consumption and cancer risk in humans. Prospective cohort studies determined that significant reductions in relative risk of precancerous colorectal polyps, incidence of prostate cancer, or mortality from pancreatic cancer, by, respectively, 24%, 49%, and 65%, were associated with 3-5 or more servings of dried fruits per week. Selected case-control studies revealed inverse associations between dried fruit intake and risk of cancer as well. The reported associations were comparable to or stronger than those observed for total or raw fruits. Although the small number and high heterogeneity impede meta-analysis of these studies, we conclude that currently available data provide some initial evidence that consumption of dried fruits may be associated with a lower cancer incidence or mortality in populations. The data suggest that higher intake of raisins and other dried fruits may be important in the prevention of cancers of the digestive system. Because only a limited number of health outcome and dried fruit intake relations have been evaluated in prospective studies to date, reanalyzing existing high-quality epidemiological data may expand the knowledge base.

Project description:Torrefaction of biomass is a promising thermochemical pretreatment technique used to upgrade the properties of biomass to produce solid fuel with improved fuel properties. A comparative study of the effects of torrefaction temperatures (200, 250, and 300 °C) and residence times (0.5 and 1 h) on the quality of torrefied biomass samples derived from spent coffee grounds (SCG) and coffee husk (CH) were conducted. An increase in torrefaction temperature (200-300 °C) and residence time (0.5-1 h) for CH led to an improvement in the fixed carbon content (17.9-31.8 wt %), calorific value (18.3-25 MJ/kg), and carbon content (48.5-61.2 wt %). Similarly, the fixed carbon content, calorific value, and carbon content of SCG rose by 14.6-29 wt %, 22.3-30.3 MJ/kg, and 50-69.5 wt %, respectively, with increasing temperature and residence time. Moreover, torrefaction led to an improvement in the hydrophobicity and specific surface area of CH and SCG. The H/C and O/C atomic ratios for both CH- and SCG-derived torrefied biomass samples were in the range of 0.93-1.0 and 0.19-0.20, respectively. Moreover, a significant increase in volatile compound yield was observed at temperatures between 250 and 300 °C. Maximum volatile compound yields of 11.9 and 6.2 wt % were obtained for CH and SCG, respectively. A comprehensive torrefaction model for CH and SCG developed in Aspen Plus provided information on the mass and energy flows and the overall process energy efficiency. Based on the modeling results, it was observed that with increasing torrefaction temperature to 300 °C, the mass and energy yield values of the torrefied biomass samples declined remarkably (97.3% at 250 °C to 67.5% at 300 °C for CH and 96.7% at 250 °C to 75.1% at 300 °C for SCG). The SCG-derived torrefied biomass tested for CO2 adsorption at 25 °C had a comparatively higher adsorption capacity of 0.38 mmol/g owing to its better textural characteristics. SCG would need further thermal treatment or functionalization to tailor the surface properties to attract more CO2 molecules under a typical post-combustion scenario.

Project description:BackgroundStudies investigating the association between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggested indirect (periodontitis would increase the circulation of inflammation-inducible molecules) and direct (periodontopathogens might colonize brains affected by Alzheimer's disease) pathways. While there seems to be a positive relationship between periodontitis and AD, concerns have been raised about the role of confounding.AimTo systematically review the literature to assess confounding and their level of heterogeneity in the association between periodontitis and AD. Also, to examine data reporting and interpretation regarding confounding bias.MethodsThis review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered within PROSPERO. Electronic searches were performed in seven main databases and three others to capture the "grey literature". The PECO strategy was used to identify observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort studies) assessing the association between periodontal disease and AD without restricting publication language and year. Critical appraisal was performed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Confounders were evaluated following a two-step approach.ResultsA total of 3255 studies were found, of which 18 (13 case-control, four cross-sectional, and one cohort) met the eligibility criteria. Participants with AD were 1399 (mean age 64 ± 9 to 84.8 ± 5.6 years), whereas those without AD were 1730 (mean age 62.6 ± 7.1 to 81.4 ± 4.6). Female patients composed most of the sample for both groups. The confounding variables "age" and "sex" were present in all studies. Four studies used the 2017 AAP/EFP periodontal classification. Most studies had a low risk of bias. Fifty percent of the articles did not consider confounding; variation in the adjustment approaches was observed. Additionally, 62% of the studies did not mention bias, and 40% did not discuss any limitations about confounders.ConclusionsGiven the study's limitations, caution must be taken to properly interpret the association between periodontitis and AD.Registration: CRD42022293884.
