A database of zooplankton abundance in the Atlantic sectors of the Southern and sub-Arctic Oceans.

ABSTRACT: Scientific sampling of zooplankton in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean has been undertaken since the 1920s, but few analyzed datasets are available to the research community. We provide a database of standardized data derived from samples collected by Bongo nets in this sector between 1996 and 2013, amounting to almost 94,000 individual records. The study region contains some of the highest levels of pelagic biomass in the Southern Ocean and is also undergoing rapid ocean warming and changing seasonality in sea-ice distribution. Data from a single expedition to the sub-Arctic where the same sampling methodology was used are also included. Atlantic water is an increasing influence in that region, as is the prevalence of boreal plankton taxa within Arctic plankton communities. These data will be of value in supporting studies assessing the impacts of climate change on the structure and function of polar pelagic systems.

Shifting fish distributions in warming sub-Arctic oceans.

Project description:The distributional response of marine fishes to climate warming would be expected to be very different than that of homeothermic birds and mammals, due both to more direct thermal effects on poikilothermic fish physiology and on reduced habitat fragmentation. In this study, we use a combination of linear models and graphical tools to quantify three-dimensional distribution shifts in 82 fish species caught in 5390 standardized groundfish survey tows over a 22-year time frame in the highly-productive sub-Arctic waters around Iceland. Over a 1 °C range, temperature significantly modified the distributional centroids of 72% of all fish species, but had relatively little effect on diversity. Most of the geographic shifts were to the northwest, and there was no overall tendency to move to deeper waters. A doubling of species abundance significantly influenced the distribution of 62% of species, but lacked the poleward orientation observed with temperature increases. Stenothermal species, those near their upper or lower thermal limits, and those with restricted spatial ranges were most likely to shift their distribution in response to climate warming, while deepwater species were not. A 2-3 °C warming of marine waters seems likely to produce large-scale changes in the location of many sub-Arctic fisheries.

Metagenome-assembled genomes of phytoplankton microbiomes from the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.

Project description:BackgroundPhytoplankton communities significantly contribute to global biogeochemical cycles of elements and underpin marine food webs. Although their uncultured genomic diversity has been estimated by planetary-scale metagenome sequencing and subsequent reconstruction of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), this approach has yet to be applied for complex phytoplankton microbiomes from polar and non-polar oceans consisting of microbial eukaryotes and their associated prokaryotes.ResultsHere, we have assembled MAGs from chlorophyll a maximum layers in the surface of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans enriched for species associations (microbiomes) with a focus on pico- and nanophytoplankton and their associated heterotrophic prokaryotes. From 679 Gbp and estimated 50 million genes in total, we recovered 143 MAGs of medium to high quality. Although there was a strict demarcation between Arctic and Atlantic MAGs, adjacent sampling stations in each ocean had 51-88% MAGs in common with most species associations between Prasinophytes and Proteobacteria. Phylogenetic placement revealed eukaryotic MAGs to be more diverse in the Arctic whereas prokaryotic MAGs were more diverse in the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 70% of protein families were shared between Arctic and Atlantic MAGs for both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. However, eukaryotic MAGs had more protein families unique to the Arctic whereas prokaryotic MAGs had more families unique to the Atlantic.ConclusionOur study provides a genomic context to complex phytoplankton microbiomes to reveal that their community structure was likely driven by significant differences in environmental conditions between the polar Arctic and warm surface waters of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. Dataset of 143 metagenome-assembled genomes from the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, including 21 for eukaryotic organisms.

Project description:This article presents metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms originating from the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, along with gene prediction and functional annotation for MAGs from both domains. Eleven samples from the chlorophyll-a maximum layer of the surface ocean were collected during two cruises in 2012; six from the Arctic in June-July on ARK-XXVII/1 (PS80), and five from the Atlantic in November on ANT-XXIX/1 (PS81). Sequencing and assembly was carried out by the Joint Genome Institute (JGI), who provide annotation of the assembled sequences, and 122 MAGs for prokaryotic organisms. A subsequent binning process identified 21 MAGs for eukaryotic organisms, mostly identified as Mamiellophyceae or Bacillariophyceae. The data for each MAG includes sequences in FASTA format, and tables of functional annotation of genes. For eukaryotic MAGs, transcript and protein sequences for predicted genes are available. A spreadsheet is provided summarising quality measures and taxonomic classifications for each MAG. These data provide draft genomes for uncultured marine microbes, including some of the first MAGs for polar eukaryotes, and can provide reference genetic data for these environments, or used in genomics-based comparison between environments.

Carbohydrates and carbohydrate degradation gene abundance and transcription in Atlantic waters of the Arctic.

Project description:Carbohydrates are chemically and structurally diverse, represent a substantial fraction of marine organic matter and are key substrates for heterotrophic microbes. Studies on carbohydrate utilisation by marine microbes have been centred on phytoplankton blooms in temperate regions, while far less is known from high-latitude waters and during later seasonal stages. Here, we combine glycan microarrays and analytical chromatography with metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to show the spatial heterogeneity in glycan distribution and potential carbohydrate utilisation by microbes in Atlantic waters of the Arctic. The composition and abundance of monomers and glycan structures in POM varied with location and depth. Complex fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides, known to accumulate in the ocean, were consistently detected, while the more labile β-1,3-glucan exhibited a patchy distribution. Through 'omics analysis, we identify variations in the abundance and transcription of carbohydrate degradation-related genes across samples at the community and population level. The populations contributing the most to transcription were taxonomically related to those known as primary responders and key carbohydrate degraders in temperate ecosystems, such as NS4 Marine Group and Formosa. The unique transcription profiles for these populations suggest distinct substrate utilisation potentials, with predicted glycan targets corresponding to those structurally identified in POM from the same sampling sites. By combining cutting-edge technologies and protocols, we provide insights into the carbohydrate component of the carbon cycle in the Arctic during late summer and present a high-quality dataset that will be of great value for future comparative analyses.

Ecology and abundance of zooplankton in Karanja reservoir.

Project description:The present work aims to study the Zooplankton seasonal distribution and diversity in Karanja reservoir, Bidar district for the period of two years from October 2001 to September 2003. We have recorded 36 species of which, 15 species belongs to rotifera, 11 species belongs to cladocera, nine species belongs to copepoda and ostracoda three species. Among zooplankton, particularly rotifera was the dominant group throughout the study period and highest count was recorded in the month of March 2003. Cluster analysis was also revealed by dendrogram and Shannon diversity index is also presented. Zooplankton community is also correlated with physicochemical parameters.

Abundance of Two <i>Pelagibacter ubique</i> Bacteriophage Genotypes along a Latitudinal Transect in the North and South Atlantic Oceans.

Project description:This study characterizes viral and bacterial dynamics along a latitudinal transect in the Atlantic Ocean from approximately 10 N-40 S. Overall viral abundance decreased with depth, on average there were 1.64 ± 0.71 × 107 virus like particles (VLPs) in surface waters, decreasing to an average of 6.50 ± 2.26 × 105 VLPs in Antarctic Bottom Water. This decrease was highly correlated to bacterial abundance. There are six major water masses in the Southern Tropical Atlantic Ocean, and inclusion of water mass, temperature and salinity variables explained a majority of the variation in total viral abundance. Recent discovery of phages infecting bacteria of the SAR11 clade of Alphaproteobacteria (i.e., pelagiphages) leads to intriguing questions about the roles they play in shaping epipelagic communities. Viral-size fraction DNA from epipelagic water was used to quantify the abundance of two pelagiphages, using pelagiphage-specific quantitative PCR primers and probes along the transect. We found that HTVC010P, a member of a podoviridae sub-family, was most abundant in surface waters. Copy numbers ranged from an average of 1.03 ± 2.38 × 105 copies ml-1 in surface waters, to 5.79 ± 2.86 × 103 in the deep chlorophyll maximum. HTVC008M, a T4-like myovirus, was present in the deep chlorophyll maximum (5.42 ± 2.8 × 103 copies ml-1 on average), although it was not as highly abundant as HTVC010P in surface waters (6.05 ± 3.01 × 103 copies ml-1 on average). Interestingly, HTVC008M was only present at a few of the most southern stations, suggesting latitudinal biogeography of SAR11 phages.

Abundance and biomass of copepods and cladocerans in Atlantic and Arctic domains of the Barents Sea ecosystem.

Project description:Zooplankton in the Barents Sea have been monitored annually with a standard procedure with determination of size-fractioned biomass since the mid-1980s. Biomass of copepods and cladocerans was estimated based on measured abundance and individual weights taken from literature. Calanus species were dominant, making up ~85% of the estimated biomass of copepods. The second most important taxon was Oithona spp. (~0.5 g dry weight (dw) m-2, ~10%), followed by Metridia spp. (~0.15 g dw m-2, 2-3%) and Pseudocalanus spp. (0.10-0.15 g dw m-2, 1-5%). Estimated biomass of cladoceran taxa (Evadne and Podon) was low (0.01 g dw m-2). Calanus spp. contributed most of the biomass of the medium size fraction (1-2 mm), whereas small copepod species (Oithona, Pseudocalanus and others) contributed to the small size fraction (<1 mm). Estimated biomass of Calanus spp. and of the sum of small copepod species were both positively correlated with measured total zooplankton biomass (R2 = 0.72 and 0.34, respectively). The biomass ratio of small copepod species to Calanus was similar in Atlantic and Arctic water masses (~0.15-0.2) but tended to increase with decreasing total biomass. This suggests a shift to relatively larger roles of small copepods as Calanus and total biomass decrease.

Status and trends of terrestrial arthropod abundance and diversity in the North Atlantic region of the Arctic.

Project description:The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme (CBMP) provides an opportunity to improve our knowledge of Arctic arthropod diversity, but initial baseline studies are required to summarise the status and trends of planned target groups of species known as Focal Ecosystem Components (FECs). We begin this process by collating available data for a relatively well-studied region in the Arctic, the North Atlantic region, summarising the diversity of key terrestrial arthropod FECs, and compiling trends for some representative species. We found the FEC classification system to be challenging to implement, but identified some key groups to target in the initial phases of the programme. Long-term data are scarce and exhibit high levels of spatial and temporal variability. Nevertheless, we found that a number of species and groups are in decline, mirroring patterns in other regions of the world. We emphasise that terrestrial arthropods require higher priority within future Arctic monitoring programmes.

Mitochondrial genomes of the key zooplankton copepods Arctic Calanus glacialis and North Atlantic Calanus finmarchicus with the longest crustacean non-coding regions.

Project description:We determined the nearly complete mitochondrial genomes of the Arctic Calanus glacialis and its North Atlantic sibling Calanus finmarchicus, which are key zooplankton components in marine ecosystems. The sequenced part of C. glacialis mitogenome is 27,342 bp long and consists of two contigs, while for C. finmarchicus it is 29,462 bp and six contigs, what makes them the longest reported copepod mitogenomes. The typical set of metazoan mitochondrial genes is present in these mitogenomes, although the non-coding regions (NCRs) are unusually long and complex. The mitogenomes of the closest species C. glacialis and C. finmarchicus, followed by the North Pacific C. sinicus, are structurally similar and differ from the much more typical of deep-water, Arctic C. hyperboreus. This evolutionary trend for the expansion of NCRs within the Calanus mitogenomes increases mitochondrial DNA density, what resulted in its similar density to the nuclear genome. Given large differences in the length and structure of C. glacialis and C. finmarchicus mitogenomes, we conclude that the species are genetically distinct and thus cannot hybridize. The molecular resources presented here: the mitogenomic and rDNA sequences, and the database of repetitive elements should facilitate the development of genetic markers suitable in pursuing evolutionary research in copepods.

Seasonal variability in non-consumptive mortality of Arctic zooplankton.

Project description:Recent observations from high-latitude marine ecosystems indicate that non-consumptive mortality may be particularly high in Arctic zooplankton during the polar night. Here we have estimated the contribution of dead organisms to the mesozooplankton community in the high Arctic (Svalbard 78-81oN) during the polar night (January), in spring (May) and in late summer (end of August). To identify in situ dead organisms, we used Neutral Red Stain. The dead zooplankton fraction consisted mainly of copepods, while the contribution of dead non-copepods was low in all seasons. The absolute abundance of dead copepods varied little between seasons; however, the relative contribution of dead copepods was highest in January with 11-35% of the copepods classified as dead, in contrast to 2-12% in spring and summer. Furthermore, there were species-specific differences: copepods of the genus Calanus contributed more to the dead fraction of the copepod community during the polar night compared to spring and summer, leading to a higher "dead" biomass in winter. We conclude that non-consumptive winter mortality is considerable in calanoid copepods in the Arctic and an important but so far neglected component of the passive carbon flux, providing carbon in larger portions for higher trophic level consumers during the low-productive winter.
