Terminal iron nitrides (Fe≡N) have been proposed as intermediates of Fe-mediated nitrogen fixation, and well-defined synthetic iron nitrides have been characterized in high oxidation states, including Fe<sup>IV</sup> , Fe<sup>V</sup> , and Fe<sup>VI</sup> .
